LOCAL VETERANS MARCH TO END ALZHEIMER’S & RAISE $100K
What is it that inspires a group of military Veterans to march over 30 miles across South Central Michigan?
It is their determination to one day bring an end to a terrible disease that is currently impacting the lives of six million seniors and their families:1 in 3 seniors will die with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, and Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) have an increased chance of 2 - 4 times that of the average person of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
“I realized there was a huge need to support those seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia,” Welbaum said. “We were approached by Marsha Oberleiter, Walk Manager for Lenawee County Walk to End Alzheimer’s. She explained that there’s this wonderful organization called the Alzheimer’s Association that does so many things for the community, I knew I had to be part of it.”
A er committing to become a part of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Lenawee County, Welbaum decided that he needed to do something more. “My buddy Scott Doney (Visiting Angels Client Services Director) and I decided to di erentiate our team.” In 2018, the two determined that they would walk the 34 miles from the Visiting Angels o ce in Adrian to the Alzheimer’s Association’s, Michigan Great Lakes Chapter o ce in Ann Arbor, carrying 35-to-40-pound ruck sacks for the duration of the walk.

rough his work in the homecare industry, Welbaum quickly became aware of the extent to which Alzheimer’s disease a ected seniors, prompting him to learn more about the disease and to nd ways through which they could provide assistance to their clients.
Regarding his passion for this cause, Welbaum said, “I have three big reasons, rst, my daughter and my son, I don’t want them to have to look mom and dad in the eyes and know we don’t know they we are – to know that mom and dad have died even though they’re still here. Second, I own a homecare company. ird, I am a vet. and I know the veteran community, and I know how o en we come back from a 20 to 21-year war with PTSD or TBI.”
