IS CBD RIGHT FOR ME?

CBD has gotten a lot of buzz in recent years, becoming one of the biggest wellness trends. It can be found almost everywhere, from health food stores, to co ee shops, to gas stations. Although more people are hearing about CBD, many still have questions about what CBD exactly is, how it works, and what people use it for.

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of over 100 cannabinoids (plant chemicals) found in the Cannabis sativa plant. CBD can be made from both marijuana and hemp, with the only di erence between the two being the amount of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the cannabinoid that causes intoxication). If the plant contains <0.3% THC, it’s hemp, and if above that, it’s called marijuana. CBD is the second most abundant cannabinoid in marijuana (THC being the most), and it’s the most abundant cannabinoid in hemp.

CBD has been touted to be helpful in many conditions, such as epilepsy, chronic pain, in ammation and in ammatory conditions, anxiety, sleep, digestive system issues, and other neurological conditions. To understand how CBD might produce bene cial e ects in our bodies, we must rst know what the endocannabinoid system is.

What is the endocannabinoid system?

In the late 1980s, researchers were trying to gure out how THC works in the body which led to discovering two receptors THC binds to and named them cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2 (CB1 and CB2 receptors). Researchers also discovered a molecule our bodies produce which also binds to the CB receptors, and named it anandamide. Ananda in Sanskrit means “bliss.” It turns out our body produces several molecules that bind to our cannabinoid receptors, and these are referred to as endocannabinoids.

e cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids, and enzymes that make and breakdown endocannabinoids make up the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Studies have shown that the ECS is crucial in maintaining homeostasis, or internal balance, in the body, and has an important role in memory, mood, reward systems in the brain, metabolic processes, such as energy balance and glucose metabolism, and drug addiction.

Cannabinoid receptors are said to be the most abundant receptors in the whole body. ey are also found in animals! CB1 receptors are mainly located in the brain and peripheral nervous system, but are also found elsewhere, such as in the pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands, our reproductive systems, among other places. CB2 receptors are mainly found in immune system tissues. Activating the cannabinoid receptors leads to physiologic actions in the tissue the receptor is located in. For example, CB1 receptor activation can lead to decreased pain in the peripheral nervous system, lowered blood pressure in the cardiovascular system, and decreased gut motility in the gastrointestinal system. CB2 receptor activation can lead to decreased in ammation in the immune system.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD works through several di erent mechanisms to provide bene cial e ects. ey involve both interacting with our endocannabinoid system (commonly talked about), as well as binding to receptors outside of the endocannabinoid system (less commonly known mechanisms, such a serotonin and glycine receptors). By interacting with these receptors, CBD may provide bene ts in stress, anxiety, pain, in ammation, sleep, arthritis, and an overactive immune system, to name a few examples.

What might CBD be useful for?

Since the ECS is found throughout the body, there are many potential conditions that targeting the ECS can be helpful in. According to a Gallop Poll, CBD is commonly used by people for: pain, anxiety, sleep/ insomnia, stress, migraine/headaches, muscle spasms/soreness, PTSD, ADHD and other neurological conditions, skin care, for pets, digestive system issues, and in ammation.
