helped but notice the revitalization of Park Square. And if you’ve been through the Square this past week and glanced towards the gazebo, you might have seen one of the next-to-last steps in the completion of the project: the installation of non-engraved pavers.
The next step you will see will be the reinstallation of the original engraved pavers – which numbered nearly 500! –and the addition of over 60 new engraved pavers in the plaza. Landscaping and other finishing touches will complete the project.
The ‘facelift’ of Park Square has been months in its execution, in part due to delays caused by the weather, particularly the severe storms in June. But this past month has seen a significant amount of progress and city officials estimate that the project will be complete by the end of this month.
unteers, small staff, and man City of Galion Communications Director Matt Echelberry said that the reason for the project was simple: “It needed to be done. The ground had heaved over all those years and the surface was full of waves.” The project was funded by the State Capitol Appropriations Bill ($100,000), allocated to Galion through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The City of Galion also invested $48,000 in the plaza project.
Park Square was initially created in 1996. At that time, 490 bricks were sold as a fundraiser and it was quite successful, netting $80,000, according to Echelberry.
It’s going to be great to have the Park Square plaza open to the public again; we’ve all missed music in the gazebo. And ‘Third Fridays In Galion’ will be able to return to the north side of the Square!
This Park Square revitalization project has been the work of several local businesses: Oakstone Landscaping has been the general contractor for this update of the Square; Stamper Concrete poured the concrete; and Longstreth Memorials is engraving the pavers.
August 31st was the deadline for reservation/purchase for new engraved pavers. As you read this, the new bricks bearing the names, family names, memorials, or business/organization names of Galionites are in the hands of the engravers at Longstreth Memorials. Galion's oldest business also engraved the nearly-500 original pavers that were installed in the initial Park Square design. They will also be recreating any older bricks that were damaged or smashed during the removal process in the earlier stages of the project.
Watch for the installation of the engraved pavers and the finishing touches by Oakstone Landscaping in the coming weeks!
