Since the 1970s, the Pickle Run has featured a variety of events, vendors, and the annual fireworks display over the 4th of July weekend.
Originally begun by the late Ferd Unckrich – or “Mr. Pickle,” as he was known by many – as a fundraiser for the Galion Booster Club, the gathering was successful for twenty years before its organizers decided that the festival had run its course in the 1990s.
In 2014, community support led a group of citizens to form the Pickle Run Planning Committee, to reestablish this family-friendly event in 2015. Despite Covid and other challenges, the Pickle Run has persevered, encouraging a sense of community pride, involvement, support – and dill-ightful times!
Current Pickle Run Organizer Sarah Capretta shares at press time, “We are excited to be finalizing plans for the 2023 Pickle Run Festival! This event has become more than just a festival, as it encourages community suppor t, ser vice, and pride. Countless hours are donated every year, starting in the spring, to help beautify Heise Park as we prepare for the big event!”
