THE COST OF OWNING A VEHICLE HAS RISEN DRAMATICALLY IN RECENT YEARS. ough prices at the gas pump have done much to stretch drivers’ budgets, supply shortages related to the COVID-19 pandemic hit motorists’ bottom lines even before the average gallon of gas reached unimaginable levels in mid-2022. ough it’s certainly not an inexpensive time to own a vehicle, drivers can take solace knowing that these four basic vehicle maintenance tasks can be performed at home and save them money.

1. CHANGE AIR FILTER. Among the simplest DIY vehicle maintenance tasks, changing the air lter on a car or truck requires no special tools. Changing an air lter can be done in as little as 10 minutes, though novices might need more time until they get a feel for what’s under the hood. Vehicle owners’ manuals can indicate where the air lter is and how frequently it should be replaced.

2. CHANGE WIPER BLADES. Changing wiper blades is another simple DIY task that doesn’t require any special tools. Though vehicles can’t function without them, tires are something few drivers think about until something goes wrong. • Measure the tread. KBB notes that a tire assessment should always include measuring the amount of remaining tread. Drivers can do this on their own in various ways. One method involves looking at the tread wear bars, which are little bridges in the grooves between the ridges. Uneven wear on tires is typically a byproduct of a larger issue. ough tires that have worn unevenly will need to be replaced, replacing them without correcting the larger issue will only lead to more uneven wear on the new tires. at’s a costly mistake. KBB notes that poor wheel alignment or suspension issues are typically to blame for uneven wear. is issue can be xed and should be addressed prior to purchasing a new set of tires.

Tires sometimes exhibit telltale signs that they need to be replaced. Before buying replacement tires, drivers can inspect their existing ones and ask their mechanic to con rm that a larger issue isn’t a ecting their performance.
