Winter Sanctuary: Meeting a Rising Need

Ihave recently discovered a resource that truly shows the heart of Mount Vernon. The Winter Sanctuary at 401 West Vine Street in Mount Vernon is so much more than its name. If a woman or virtually any person finds themself in a dangerous or awkward situation in their living situation--St. Paul’s Episcopal Church offers sanctuary.

While the women’s emergency homeless shelter opens officially in Mount Vernon on Nov. 1, if, througout the year, some tragedy brings about a “living hardship,” the Winter Sanctuary has made temporary housing arrangements to hundreds of residents that struggle to maintain a safe home.

Besides just housing, those that are struggling can find a variety of resources by first stopping by the Parish House at 100 E. Vine Street in Mount Vernon. Food, clothes, furniture, counseling, if the folks there can’t provide it themselves, they know where to send you to find it!

Across the Midwest, with housing costs on the rise, homelessness is a growing problem---and statistically many communities pretend it is not an issue that deserves focus. What I have come to learn, particularly through my conversations with Rachel Jagielski-Harrison, Priest in charge of St. Paul’s Episcopal

is that where a need arises in the community, people will rise up to assist. There is an easy and memorable way to assist the Winter Sanctuary this upcoming holiday season:”A Christmas Carol,” presented by the Community Family (CFP) is an adaptation of the Dickens Classic by director Rev. Scott Elliott. This is the third year they have presented the play as a fundraiser for the Winter Sanctuary. Each year brings a unique twist to the story and this year, as the CFP joins the Mount Vernon Players in staging a production that promises not to disappoint. Mark your calendars to be a part of this winning entertainment, and winning support project for making Knox County a better place to live for all.

Mission

Our mission is to provide a seasonal, emergency shelter for the members of our community who experience homelessness, and to connect them with resources that empower them to be successful and sufficient.

Facilities

The shelters operate at 120 S. Norton Street (men) and St. Paul’s Episcopal Parish House at 100 E. High Street (women) in Mount Vernon, accommodating up to 18 men and 12 women, as well as bathroom, kitchen, and laundry facilities.

Hope

At the Winter Sanctuary, our hope is to see growth, both physical and emotional in every person who walks through our doors.

Volunteers

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the shelter depends on volunteers to oversee the guests and on community donations to operate the shelter.
