What is the “Talk of the Town” in Mount Vernon?
A true landmark downtown since as early as 1851 is bustling with life again, because of the original reason the building was erected. The Woodward Opera House, as it was once described to me as “the oldest, known existing, horse shoe balcony opera house east of the Mississippi” —-while I was helping the early leadership of the Knox County Renaissance Foundation sweep pigeon manure off of the stage in 1990. The place that Dr. Ebenezer Woodward built in 1851 to support economic activity downtown has now returned to become a driving economic force as it is home to regular performances again, businesses, and dining opportunities. When people discuss meeting for a gathering of friends, or a business meeting, people can now once again say “meet me at the Woodward Opera House, first floor”. It can also be the pinnacle of someone’s wedding, or family reunion —-or a treasured concert or theater venue. Many people in Northeast Ohio will remember when the building housed “Colonial Menswear” and much of the building was used as storage. The last three decades, many community leaders have stepped up to make “The Woodward Opera House” and the businesses and non-profit agencies that will make a home there. As recently as two weeks ago, I was a part of a production of The Mount Vernon Players, staging a play in a small “black box theater”—-and of breathing theatrical life back into the building with the first “dinner theater” experience in that space. You can truly feel the history, and imagine the magic “if these walls could talk”. Look ahead to a visit to the magical Woodward Opera House soon, if you haven’t yet, and enjoy Mount Vernon’s history coming to life.
