If your vehicle year is 2014 or newer, you need to read this article in case your AC needs serviced this summer. Mighty Auto Pro is one of the few shops in Medina that will be able to service your vehicle’s AC.

(A little bit of background first, so all of this makes sense) Every vehicle with AC has refrigerant in it, refrigerant’s sole purpose is turn hot air into cold air. Here is a brief history of refrigerant for vehicles:

- Vehicles built before 1995 used Freon (also called R12) - 1994 the new standard is a refrigerant called R134a or HFC134a - 2013 the US car manufacturers begin converting vehicles to 1234yf, with EPA mandating a full transition by mid 2020’s.

This new refrigerant is said to help improve fuel efficiency while also greatly reducing the harmful effects placed on the environment.

1234yf breaks down chemically in the environment after just 11 days as compared to 13 years for R134a.

1234yf is a significantly more expensive refrigerant to the consumer. It also requires the shop to make a major investment in new equipment and also a training investment for their Technicians so they can properly service vehicles with the new refrigerant.

This is just one example of the continued investments Mighty Auto Pro makes in state of the art equipment and Technician training to service our customers.

Here is the process:

The refrigerant will be evacuated, and pulled into a vacuum to remove air and moisture. Then a vacuum pressure test to check for leaks within the system is performed and we can only proceed if no leaks are detected. Then a “pre-charge” delivers a 15% charge to the system, while the technician tests the blower for leaks, where the front evaporator inside the vehicle’s cabin is located. Once it’s determined that are no leaks in the system, the recharge is completed and the rest of the refrigerant is added into the system. If leaks are detected, the machine will alert the technician to locate and repair any leaks before proceeding. This prevents an unnecessary and expensive loss of refrigerant.
