The National Retail Federation indicates Valentine’s Day is the h largest spending event in the United States a er the winter holidays and Mother’s Day. Each February, people clamber to get gi s for their sweethearts and create romantic memories through ne dining and decadent desserts.

According to Finder, a tool used to navigate complex decision-making processes, Americans were expected to spend a combined $50 billion on gi s and activities in 2021, with gi s averaging $187. Men tend to spend more than women on Valentine’s Day.

Everyone may be spending more on Valentine’s Day this year due to in ation. In 2021, used cars and trucks, oil, meats and poultry, airline fares, and women’s apparel were just some of the items that increased signi cantly in price. Finding ways to be frugal may be challenging this February, but these ideas are a start.

DIY CARD

While a card may be the smallest purchase on your shopping list, you can still save an average of $3 to $5 on a card by making one yourself or sending a free digital greeting.

DINE IN

Restaurants are popular options for couples on Valentine’s Day, but they can be busy and prices may be in ated. Many also o er limited prix xe menus. By making a meal at home and picking and choosing less-costly ingredients, couples can save a substantial amount of money.

Be exible with jewelry

You don’t have to spend a fortune to make an impression with gi s. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but other stones are o en less costly. Try giving a birthstone as an alternative. If gold is out of your price range, many sterling silver options are just as beautiful. In addition, consider warehouse retailers for jewelry purchases, as they may have lower costs.

FRUGAL FLOWERS

e cost of roses de nitely goes up near Valentine’s Day, so consider giving another ower. Lilies can be lovely or maybe that special someone has a signature ower. A owering plant, which will cost less than many bouquets and will last far beyond Valentine’s Day if given care, is another alternative to consider.

SAVE ON CHOCOLATE

Sweet treats are the name of the game, but many popular chocolate boxes can be pricey this time of year. Plan ahead and keep a stockpile of chocolates from Halloween or Christmas. en use oral wire or pipe cleaners to turn bite-sized packages into a handmade chocolate bouquet. Otherwise, purchase various chocolate bars and package them with hot chocolate, chocolate cookies and other decadent o erings in a themed gi basket.

Saving on Valentine’s Day comes down to being creative and focusing on the sentiment rather than the price.

AS THE ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME of the National Football League, the Super Bowl is one of the world’s most watched events every year. And for good reason, as the game is never short on dramatic moments. e following are a handful of the many notable plays in the recent history of the Super Bowl.

1.Malcolm Butler’s interception

Super Bowl XLIX, February 1, 2015: An epic battle between the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots e ectively ended when one of the most questionable play calls in NFL history resulted in a goal-line interception by Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler. With just 26 seconds to go and trailing 28-24, Seattle decided to pass the ball from New England’s 1-yard line. e more conventional play call would have been to hand the ball o to running back Marshawn Lynch, who had already scored a touchdown and run for more than 100 yards in the game. But Seattle chose to pass, and Russell Wilson’s throw was intercepted, resulting in the Patriots winning their rst Super Bowl in a decade.

2.David Tyree’s catch

Super Bowl XLII, February 3, 2008: Super Bowl is widely regarded as one of the greatest upsets in Super Bowl history, as it also featured one of the most unlikely heroes in the sport’s history. With his team trailing the New England Patriots 14-10 late in the fourth quarter, New York Giant David Tyree, a little-used wide receiver and special

teams stalwart, made a miraculous catch on third down, leaping into the air and pinning the ball to his helmet. at 32-yard reception kept the eventual game-winning drive alive. e loss would mark the Patriots’ only defeat of the season.

3. Mike Jones’ tackle

Super Bowl XXXIV, January 30, 2000: that featured a 16-point comeback from the Tennessee Titans, Super Bowl XXXIV came down to the nal play of the game. With just six seconds remaining, the Titans trailed the St. Louis Rams 23-16 but had the ball at the Rams’ 10-yard line. Titans quarterback Steve McNair completed a pass to wide receiver Kevin Dyson, only to see Rams linebacker Mike Jones tackle Dyson at the 1-yard line as time expired, stopping another Titans comeback and earning the Rams their rst Super Bowl victory. Super Bowl LI, February 5, 2017: While the moment itself may not be as amazing as other Super Bowl plays, it remains among the most memorable for what it represented. Trailing the Atlanta Falcons 28-3 midway through the third quarter, the New England Patriots were written o by viewers across the globe. But those eulogies proved premature, as the Patriots orchestrated the largest comeback in Super Bowl history, culminating with White’s 2-yard overtime scamper into the end zone to seal the victory for New England.

4 FACTORS To Consider To Maintain Winter Safety

Winter is in full swing. Temperatures have dropped for much of the country, and depending on where one lives, snow, wind and ice are to be expected.

As beautiful as snow-covered landscapes can be, winter presents unique hazards, notably slippery roads and surfaces. Chilly temperatures also can put people at risk if they spend prolonged periods outdoors unprotected.

According to the insurance company Carsurance, more than 156,000 crashes occur annually due to icy roads. Roughly 17 percent of all vehicle crashes happen in winter conditions. Winter hazards are not exclusive to driving, however. at means winter safety involves a consideration of a host of factors.

1. CHANGING VISIBILITY

While slippery surfaces may contribute to some accidents, visibility can quickly change with winter weather. Blowing snow can contribute to whiteout conditions. In addition, fog can be hazardous to drivers, aviators and mariners and contributes to thousands of travel accidents every year, advises the National Weather Service. It’s important to slow down, leave plenty of distance, use your low-beam headlights, and recognize when it may be safest to pull over, such as when visibility is signi cantly compromised.

2. SNOW REMOVAL

Shoveling snow or using a snowblower are common wintertime activities. Yet strenuous levels of activity in cold temperatures could put people at risk of heart attack, particularly if they are not acclimated to physical activity. Always warm up prior to shoveling snow to prepare the body for exercise. Go slowly and take frequent breaks. Avoid twisting and tossing snow over your shoulder, which can contribute to back injuries.

3. CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING

Winter weather means turning up the heat or doing more indoor cooking. Carbon monoxide is produced through the burning of fuel in various forms, including stoves, engines, gas ranges, portable generators, and grills. e National Safety Council says carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that can go undetected as it builds up in enclosed spaces. Never warm up the car inside of a contained garage. Do not use portable ameless chemical heaters indoors, and have furnaces, water heaters and other fuel-burning appliances checked and serviced by a quali ed technician annually. Be sure that carbon monoxide alarms are on every oor of the home, and take it seriously if the alarm goes o .

4. BLACK ICE

Black ice is a common winter foe. Black ice forms when temperatures rise above freezing during the day, melting any snow on the ground and causing surfaces to become wet. If the temperature drops once more while the ground is wet, a thin, transparent sheet of ice can form. Black ice also may occur if moisture in the air condenses and forms dew or fog, and then the temperature drops below freezing, says the National Weather Service. Black ice gets its name because it looks black on asphalt roads. However, it also can form on sidewalks and overpasses, or spots shaded by trees or other objects. Slowing down and exercising extreme caution are essential.

Winter is a beautiful season. But it can be just as hazardous as it is awe-inspiring. Taking steps to stay safe in unpredictable conditions is a necessity each winter.
