From montréal (4½ hrs)

Montréal has a Latin, theatrical vibe, with offbeat festivals, great food, and hip bistros. In other words, it’s a must! Spend a day or two getting to know the city, then head east (Autoroute 20 or 40) to Québec City.

From québec city (2 hrs)

Québec’s capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and likes to celebrate life à la française. The only fortified city north of Mexico has wonderful views of the St. Lawrence almost everywhere you go. Head up Route 175 through “the park” (as locals call it) to Chicoutimi.

From mauricie (3 hrs)

The Mauricie region is on the north shore (Autoroute 40) between Montréal and Québec City, extending its greenery to the shores of the St. Lawrence. Take Route 155 in Trois-Rivières and drive toward La Tuque to make your way up to Lac Saint-Jean.

From charlevoix (1½ hrs)

Charlevoix is nestled between Québec City and Tadoussac. Along Route 138, be sure to stop in Baie-Saint-Paul before taking Route 381 alongside Parc national

des Grands-Jardins toward La Baie. Or you can stay on the 138 until Baie-Sainte-Catherine. Then you can either hug the southern side of the fjord (Route 170) or take the ferry across to Tadoussac and follow the north shore up to Saguenay along Route 172.

From northern québec (3 hrs)

From Chibougamau, take Route 167 toward Saint-Félicien.

The First Nations have been in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean area for over 5,000 years. As soon as she can, Marianne St-Gelais swaps downtown Montréal for the family cabin at Saint-Ludger-de-Milot. “It’s a little in the middle of nowhere, and that’s just great!” admits the speed skater, happy to be back home with her parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and nephews.

“It’s where I come to unwind.”

No TV or cell phones here. “There’s no signal,” Marianne laughs. “We still boil the water over the fire to do the dishes.”

But there’s plenty to do: from swimming in the lake and trail riding on your quad to long evenings spent around the fire. “Nothing happens, but we’re all right there in the present moment.”

In Jonquière, be sure to stop at domaine Le cageot, where Donald and Pierre-Philippe Tremblay process berries to bottle a little sip of happiness. Try a wine or two from Père & Fils (red or white) or opt for the berry aperitif (blueberry or raspberry). In Saint-Félicien, meanwhile, microbrasserie La chouape beckons on Boulevard du Sacré-Cœur. Try a craft beer or two made by Louis Hébert, master cereal producer. You’ll love what they’ve done with the labels, each created by artists who hail from the region. The microbrewery is open until midnight during the summer, seven days a week. In Saint-Gédéon, the beers from the Gagnon brothers at microbrasserie du Lac saint-Jean are devilishly refreshing. Enjoy them straight from the bottle or on tap, outside on the patio or in front of a live band. And in Alma, drop by the miel des ruisseaux stand for a taste of mead, the nectar of the gods trusted by the Vikings to give them strength and courage. The honey shop is part of Québec’s network of economuseums. Red or white? Both versions from Père & Fils (Domaine Le Cageot) took home the silver medal at the 2014 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition.

At Fromagerie médard, three of the four Boivin-Côté children from Saint-Gédéon (Rose-Alice, Étienne, and Justine) are looking ahead to the family’s future. You’ll meet them at the family-run cheese factory, in the greenhouses, and at the bakery. Halfway between Zoo sauvage de Saint-Félicien and Val-Jalbert on the Véloroute des Bleuets bike trail, take a cheese-tasting break at Fromagerie perron and shoot the breeze with Albert (grandson to Adélard, the man who started the whole cheese-making business) while you stock up on some good old fresh cheddar. Get it while it’s hot at 10 a.m.! At the sound of the bell, Médard family cheddar couldn’t be any fresher—it’s still warm.

At Fromagerie au pays-des-Bleuets in Saint-Félicien, they keep their shoulder close to the cheese wheel. They make cheeses (Desneiges, Bouton d’Or, Roc Bleu, and Petit Délice), they have a butcher’s shop (Chez Ti-John), they run a dairy farm (3J), and they find the time to process berries (Les Petits fruits de Lizon), too. And all with a smile! On the way to Jonquière, drop by Fromagerie Blackburn where Marie-Josée runs the family cheese factory. She’s the woman behind the six signature cheeses, including the famous— and multiple award-winning—Mont-Jacob. Ready-to-eat rose jelly. Above Fromagerie au Pays-des-Bleuets, Manon Brassard’s Centiflora wild rose jelly and antioxidant blueberry juices are divine.

She grew up in the historic neighbourhood of Sainte-Thérèse d’Arvida before completing her studies in art and media technology at Cégep, right before university, in Jonquière. In other words, her roots are here. “I get all emotional every time I drive through the park and see the Monts Valin in the distance,” she says. Freedom comes with every journey back home to her roots. And why L’Anse-Saint-Jean?

“My partner and I came back up to see the house where his parents and grandparents lived. It was right beside the marina, with the Saguenay river straight ahead. We knocked on the door, and destiny took care of the rest.” No wonder her eyes well up every time she leaves.
