Born and bred in Chicoutimi, Éric Larouche has deep roots in the local community. “When you want to get things moving,” he says, “you have to get involved.” The businessman is president of Tourisme Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, the owner of Hôtel Chicoutimi, and co-owner of Pétroles R.L., a family business whose future is in safe hands. How does he do it all? The day he turned 38, he did a 180º turn. “I used to be fat before opting for a healthier lifestyle. If I wanted to see 80, I decided to get in shape.”

Also plan a visit to Val-Jalbert, a reconstructed historical village where you’ll be humbled by human ingenuity in action and the larger than life waterfalls. You’re not far from Cité de l’Énergie in Shawinigan, a museum showcasing energy projects, and a great spot for a picnic. Stop for a bite in Trois-Rivières—you can’t go wrong on Rue des Forges—then get back on the road to Montréal.

The Saguenay fjord is the gateway to a sparkling kingdom that has been wowing tourists by the boatload for close to two centuries now—and putting a glint in the eye of outdoor buffs and nature enthusiasts alike. There are any number of ways to tackle the fjord, each as exciting as the next. The easiest is by road. There are few glimpses of the river, apart from in Saint-Fulgence and the city of Saguenay, but you do have the chance to explore

Take the Villages and Fjord tour with Tours Aventure Fjord et Monde for a spin in a luxury minibus and a short boat tour to get a taste of this part of the world for yourself. The road now doubles as a bike path (Véloroute du Fjord du Saguenay), so helmets at the ready!
Meanwhile, out on the water the Saguenay fjord is easier to enjoy than ever. Sea kayakers will be in their element, with a whole world of adventure stretched out as far as the eye can see, from guided tours to expeditions of your own. Taking La marjolaine II out to the feet of the statue at Cap-Trinité remains a classic, but now you can also hop aboard Le Fjord saguenay II, a river boat that makes five stops along the fjord, with daily trips to the major tourist destinations. Or how about the excitement of a sailing course with Voile Mercator?
Watch history unfold as you make your way along the fjord. Stock up on culture at one of the many museums or feast your eyes on a national park. Our parks are a great way to explore on foot, so head for the nearest trail and prepare for some fabulous fjord views!

d iscover the fjord
The biodiversity of the Saguenay fjord is so rich that not one but two national parks have been created to help you discover it: the saguenay–st. Lawrence marine park and Québec’s parc national du Fjord-du-saguenay. Hiking trails crisscross both shores, but it’s hard to pass up the chance for some backpack-free hiking near Baie-Sainte-Marguerite. The package includes three days of spectacular hiking with two nights’ hut accommodation, plus backpack transportation. The area is one of the nicest places to watch for the belugas that regularly come in close to Baie Sainte-Marguerite, while Rivière-Éternité is a firm favourite among extreme sports fans thanks to the new via ferrata (one of the highest in Québec) in Parc national du Fjord-du-Saguenay. There are three breathtaking courses to choose from, including one that takes you along the steep cliff face—some 300 metres above Baie Éternité. The longest course, L’Odyssée, takes almost 6 hours to complete and crosses a suspension bridge that’s close to 100 metres high.

Visitors of all ages will get a kick out of trying something new in our outdoor playground. The treetop climbing circuits with fjord views at parc aventures cap Jaseux provide adrenalin galore, divided between 73 suspension bridges and 8 giant ziplines. Even the kids can get in on the act in the new Bambino section, especially designed for little ones age 3 and over. But L’Extrême—the only net course in north America—is strictly for grown-ups! Then it’s time to kick back and relax in a tree house, dome, or bubble hanging high above the Saguenay.

Time to be zen. Along the flats where the river turns into the fjord, all kinds of birdlife is just waiting to be admired in its natural habitat from the birding trails. Down in the village, cibro is a rehabilitation and interpretation centre that takes care of wounded birds of prey and nurses them back to freedom. A great way to be in harmony with nature!

In 1987 Michel biked all the way (almost 500 km!) from Montréal to Cap Jaseux. It was love at first sight! There was no way he was going back home. The sports buff had found the perfect playground for his favourite outdoor pursuits.
At the same time, Véronique had come up from Québec City to visit a friend in Chicoutimi. Destiny? Luck? Coincidence? The friend was also a friend of Michel’s—and when Véronique and Michel met the fireworks went off! She dropped everything to come live and practice medicine in La Baie. It was 1999 and she hasn’t looked back since. Their daughter Laurence (12) and son
Thomas (9) were both born and bred in the Saguenay and can’t imagine life anywhere else. “Our home is right here,” says Laurence, pointing towards the fjord.

“We live 450 m from Rivière Saguenay. To feel the sand on our feet, that’s 15 km, with no traffic and no red lights, along beautiful country roads. We want to go sailing and in under an hour we’re on Lac Saint-Jean. We live right in the heart of an outdoor paradise.”
The couple and their two children can’t get enough of their natural surroundings.
“Two days ago, we were out kayaking on Lac Kénogami. We’ve biked our way around Lac Saint-Jean twice with the kids. In less than two hours we can be watching the whales off Les Escoumins. Here is really our base camp.” And when winter rolls around, the family hits the slopes at Mont-Édouard and Mont-Bélu or goes snowkiting on the ice off La Baie. Doesn’t sound like a bad life, does it? “Living and working here is our idea of a fun time,” they conclude. And no wonder.

In Saguenay–Lac-SaintJean, our love of the land knows no bounds. It shows in every twinkle of a farmer’s eye as he looks out over a field of delicious gourganes (a type of broad bean, and something of a local delicacy). In a wine grower’s grin as he bites into a grape swollen by the sun. And in the laughter of the children and grandchildren playing on the fertile land where their ancestors planted the first seeds of agrotourism.
Traditions are handed down from generation to generation—which isn’t to say the youngsters aren’t keen to give the tree a shake or two of their own.
Exploring Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean’s flavour trail is a great way to lick your lips and meet friendly
locals, all with deep roots in the community, all with lots of stories to share. Here, it’s always a pleasure to take off an apron, put away the gloves, or hop down off a tractor to chat with a visitor.
The Fjord Side
All that sightseeing made you thirsty? Turn off the engine and pull up a seat at La Voie Maltée, where master brewer Daniel Giguère has come up with a fine line of beers, each with a mischievous name. “La Libertine (the libertine) is a light beer, while La Polissonne (the little devil) and the Joual Vert (a typical Québec swear word) have a higher alcohol content and more character,” says Daniel, an accounting graduate turned master brewer who

Here, no one does half-measures: after-work drinks are truly something, and each beer is crafted with real passion. “We stress quality and where the grain comes from, the origins of the beer we’re going to brew. We work on bitterness, colour, and taste,” he says. Although it specializes in English beers, La Voie Maltée also concocts Irish, German, and Belgian brews you won’t find in stores. “We like
to make rare beers.” The Graincheuse (another pun: a combination of grain + grincheuse, or grumpy) is a Belgian brew that tastes divine—and it’s considered one of the world’s finest seasonal pale ales, having taken home a gold medal from the 2011 World Beer Awards in Belgium.
In Jonquière, the Blackburn farm has been in the family’s hands for four generations. Gilles Blackburn, his brother, and their four children live their passions to the full here. Daughter Marie-Josée has run the family cheese company for eight years now. She’s the person to thank for six signature cheeses that include the renowned Mont-Jacob, winner of a Super Gold medal at the 2011 World

Field of Dreams
In 2000, an 88-year-old neighbour gave the Tremblays part of a vine with four buds on it. To test how hardy it was, they buried it without roots and didn’t bother protecting it over the winter.
In six years, the branch became a sturdy plant—the DNA of which had never been seen before. A new type of vine was born: the Saint-André.
Cheese Awards. “I get up every day at 4 a.m., 12 months of the year. It’s very physical work, but I love it,” she says. The farm provides more than a million litres of milk every year. And Gilles Blackburn sells seasonal vegetables, too. (“It keeps me in shape.”) But that’s nothing compared to the six grandchildren running around the family farm every day. “If I lose sight of them even for a second or two, now that gets me worried,” he admits.
On Chemin Saint-André in Jonquière, there’s something mythical about Domaine Le Cageot. Mythical enough to make you want to get down on your knees among the vines and thank the heavens—and Tremblay Sr. and sons—for being behind so much happiness. Pierre-Philippe and his dad are a likeable bunch. “I wanted something that would keep us together forever,” says Donald. At first a raspberry orchard with 20,000 plants, the domaine is also the first officially recognized vineyard in the Saguenay–LacSaint-Jean region, with 8,000 young vines that will mature into just as many bottles of wine. In his lab, Pierre-Philippe turns the berries into alcoholic drinks, vinegars, jams, and lees. Last year the Tremblays came up with their first wine (Père & Fils), the white cuvée of which has won a gold medal in Canada. “People buy our wines by the crate. We’re going to need bigger vats,” laughs Pierre-Philippe.
Down by the Lake
Here we are in Lac-Saint-Jean, where Rose-Alice Boivin Côté’s great-grandmother brought 12 children into the world. “Back then, the law enacted by Québec Premier Honoré Mercier rewarded you with 100 acres,” says her great-granddaughter, delighted that she chose a patch of land in Saint-Gédéon. That’s where Rose-Alice’s parents—Normand and Madeleine—set up Fromagerie Médard 10 years ago. “All across the region, everyone loves cheese curds. So we started with that, on the advice of the village’s previous cheesemaker, Fernand Côté,” recalls Rose-Alice. “We start at 3 a.m. At 10 a.m. it’s still warm when we ring the bell to spread the good news!” Sixty or so Brown Swiss cows are behind two matured cheeses, 14 Arpents and Rang des Îles, both square cheeses inspired by the famous Pont l’Évêque. There’s also fresh and aged cheddar, not to mention the Belle-Mère, a firm cheese that is a tribute to Madeleine’s mother-in-law—who had 16 children in 19 years. Three of the four Boivin-Côté kids (Rose-Alice, Étienne, and Justine) work at the cheese factory, in the greenhouses, and in the bakery. But 18-year-old Bérangère isn’t sure what she wants to do yet!

local kitesurfers. While Marc works on the recipes, Charles takes care of the marketing, and Annie is the grain expert. “I met Marc in Montréal. I was the one who got him into beer, if you like, before he brought me back home,” says Annie. “It’s a great place to bring up children. No traffic, lots of daycare places, fresh air and fresh food, from farm to fork, as they say.” Before returning home, Charles taught literature, Marc worked in cinema, and Annie was in the restaurant business. The three have since added a touch of culture to Saint-Gédéon, adding literary evenings and cooking events to their lineup of activities. And what better way to quench your thirst after biking around the lake than with a Gros Mollet (big calf) or a Tante Tricotante (knitting aunt), two of the trio’s signature beers!
Lise Bradette runs a cheese factory— Fromagerie aux Pays des bleuets in Saint-Félicien—with her husband, master cheesemaker Régis Morency. Not a day goes by when she doesn’t thank the stars for her good luck. “I’ve been married 35 years. I have four sons, three of whom are carrying on the family tradition, and I live right by my parents, who even today are still out picking blueberries by hand.” Lise also has seven grandchildren. “We’re working for that generation now.” Little Mayli and her cousins have even come up with a name for the business they’ll run someday: Les Cousines Morency.
There’s a cheese factory (Desneiges, Bouton d’Or, Le Roc Bleu, Petit Délice…), there’s a butcher’s (Chez Ti-John), there’s a dairy farm to be run (3J), and haskap, blackberries, and more are turned into all kinds of delicious products (Les Petits fruits Lizon). Above the cheese factory, five generations run a processing workshop with big smiles on their faces. Centiflora, a wild rose jelly, is hard to beat. Just like the antioxidant blueberry juices.

On the Hébert family farm in Saint-Félicien (now in its sixth generation), Louis and Marie-Ève are watching Juliette and little Charlotte take their first steps. Will they follow in their dad’s footsteps? It was in Strasbourg, France, that Louis Hébert first discovered a real passion for craft beer. He came back home and started up a microbrewery of his own, Microbrasserie La Chouape , growing his grains and brewing ten or so Belgian-inspired beers. “My engineering studies and all those cabinetmaking classes I took finally came in useful for something,” he laughs. People come from near and far to try out a new beer in the tasting lounge on Boulevard Sacré-Coeur, open all summer long from 3 p.m. to midnight and Wednesday to Saturday in the winter months. It’s the perfect place to stop by for
an apéritif , a sip of happiness itself, the next time you’re in Saint-Félicien.
At Monastère Notre-Dame de Mistassini, Father Clément oversees production at Chocolaterie des pères Trappistes, the chocolate factory run by the Trappist monks. That’s over 88,000 boxes of blueberry chocolate, year in, year out. “The Trappist monks have always lived off the fruits of their labour,” he explains. “They have made cheese, wine, beer, and, since 1944, chocolate.” You’ll discover all kinds of chocolate-covered goodies in the factory store. Stroll by the lake, hike up through the woods to the old monastery, chat to the monks, or go on a retreat at the monastery—all great ways to find inner peace on your vacation.

Head underground to visit the famous “fairy hole” cave, the only protected natural hibernacula (a shelter used by animals in winter) for bats in Québec. Next, daredevils can head up to a 350-metre zipline course that passes 50 metres over the raging waters below, while a via ferrata–inspired cable course also turns heads. Between Val-Jalbert and the Saint-Félicien zoo, turn off toward Pekuakami (Lac Saint-Jean, in the Innu language). On the most advanced tip of the lake, the Véloroute des Bleuets bike trail whizzes by right where the Innu peoples used to gather when they returned from hunting expeditions. The Innu nation belonging to the Mashteuiatsh community continues to share its know-how today, with the greatest respect for its traditions.

Arrive by car or bike along the Véloroute des Bleuets for a magical scene you’ll fall in love with at first sight. Walk out onto the jetty overlooking the river and you could be forgiven for thinking you’re on Gilligan’s Island. Biting off as much as you can chew clearly runs in the family: Sabryna’s father is a marathon runner. No surprise then that the young swimmer from Roberval has been into long-distance training since childhood. Last year she decided to really go for it, plunging head first into Lac Saint-Jean. “I had already done the 10 km for up-and-coming swimmers twice,” she says. “I wanted a bigger test.” Four months of intense training six days a week followed, first in the pool and then, from June, in the river. “The temperature is around 18ºC for the race. We don’t swim in wetsuits, so you need to be thick-skinned,” she laughs.
How much further?
Sabryna doesn’t remember a thing about the first 22 kilometres. Slowly, her body grew heavier, her shoulders started to ache, her thoughts became muddled. When her trainer told her she’d been swimming for a little over six hours, she lost heart. “There were
10 kilometres left and they were really, really hard. It felt as though I had absolutely no energy left.” But that was where the power of the subconscious came in. From day one of training, her goal hadn’t been to finish first, but just to finish. She remembered she was there to have fun, not to compete. The determination to finish grew, even though she came last in the group. Would she do it over again? “I don’t know. It’s always more stressful the second time. Of the 24 swimmers (14 men and 10 women), 3 didn’t finish. And this year I might no longer have the excuse that I’m the youngest. The race is a mythical event. At 19, I’m proud to have finished it!”

Showtime!
Since last year, Val-Jalbert has put on an immersive multimedia show using state-ofthe-art technology. It’s twenty minutes of pure magic, featuring projections that illuminate hundred-year-old artifacts as the windows of the historic building are lit up and the 1920s come roaring back to life. Stay for the day and enjoy rest areas, picnic sites, and eateries. Make the most of the experience by sleeping on site in contemporary but unusual accommodations above the general store or in one of the period homes. Once evening falls, the village is all yours! Grab a flashlight and mosey over to the mill, where fine terroir fare is served up by chef Carl Murray, a factory worker’s grandson.
