REGISTRATION POLICIES Persons giving false information regarding name, age, and address may be dropped from the class or activity without refund or credit. Students MUST be age appropriate by the first class unless otherwise noted.

Cancellation Policy Classes that do not meet the minimum enrollment requirements may be cancelled one week before class begins. Students who request to withdraw from most classes at least ONE business day BEFORE THE CLASS BEGINS may receive an 80% refund. Students who request to withdraw from most classes at least one business day before the THIRD SCHEDULED CLASS may receive a full credit on account with the City of Torrance Registration Office. Credit and Debit Card Fees The City of Torrance will be charging a non-refundable fee for all credit and debit card transactions. This fee will help recover some of the costs associated with credit card fees. Please visit our website for current fee.

Active Military personnel and their immediate dependents are eligible to receive a 10% discount (up to a maximum of $10 per program or class per participant) on Community Services programs and classes. For more information, and to obtain an application, see Forms and Supply Lists at www.TorranceCA.Gov/ClassRegistration.

Proof of Residency

Torrance residents will be required to provide current proof of residency when registering for the first time, if you move to a different Torrance address, or if mail is returned. Acceptable forms of proof of residency MUST be current and will be limited to the following: • California Driver’s License (with current address) • Car Registration or Car Insurance Premium • Utility Bill such as: gas, electric, Torrance water or trash, or a cable bill (telephone bills, bank statements, mortgage statements, rental agreements, and satellite bills are NOT accepted).

Residency

Torrance residents may register for classes and programs prior to non-residents. A Torrance resident is defined as anyone living within the Torrance city limits. Those living in the 90502 zip code and the 90501 zip code east of Western Avenue are considered non-residents. Non-residents are welcome to register for classes, but pay an additional nonresident fee for most classes.

Scholarships

Financial scholarships are available for Torrance residents and may be used for qualifying individuals under the age of 18 or over the age of 50 (proof of age is required). For more information on this program, and to obtain an application, see Forms and Supply Lists at www.TorranceCA.Gov/ClassRegistration.

Waiting Lists

Once a class is filled, participants will be placed on a waiting list. If a vacancy occurs, wait list participants will be notified by phone or e-mail in the order they were placed on the list. Please be sure the Registration Office has your correct contact information on file. If we are unable to reach you, we will remove you from the wait list.

Ceramics III – Advanced

Classes are held at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, 3330 Civic Center Drive unless otherwise noted.

CERAMICS AND CLAY Clay is NOT included unless otherwise specified. Kiln firings generally occur at least once per week. To ensure that all participants get their pieces fired in a timely manner, staff may limit the number of pieces fired at one time for each participant. Staff will make every attempt to get all pieces fired during the course of the session; however, due to the volume of ceramic work, some pieces may be fired after the session ends. Those pieces will generally be available after the first two weeks of the next session. CERAMIC EXTRAS Clay is sold in 25lb bags and MUST be purchased in advance at the Registration Office or the Cultural Services Office (credit cards only – a service fee will be charged). Lockers may be rented in advance. For specific locker assignments, students may come to the Cultural Services Office beginning Monday, January 8, from 9:00am-7:00pm. TYPE

Hand-Building and Wheel Throwing Prerequisite: Torrance Community Services Department Beginning Ceramics or instructor approval. Ballet (Dancing with RKDC)

Learn the discipline and form of basic ballet technique and terminology in a creative and welcoming environment. Students will improve upon coordination, alignment/posture, balance, and musicality. Boys and girls are welcome. Level 1: students who have taken Pre Ballet or Ballet Fundamentals and are ready for a more mature, structured ballet class. Students focus on body alignment, balance, coordination, extensions, musicality and shapes of the legs/feet. Traveling turns and jumps are introduced. Level 1/2: mixed levels class for students who have taken Ballet Fundamentals or received some ballet training. Some ballet experience is highly suggested. Students focus on body alignment, extensions and shapes of the legs/feet, traveling turns and center combinations are introduced.

VOCAL PERFORMANCE GROUP Torrance Civic Chorale George Nakano Theatre The Torrance Civic Chorale is an adult choral program performing in the James R. Armstrong Theatre. Rehearsals begin Monday evening, January 8, 7:30 to 9:30pm in the George Nakano Theatre located on the Torrance Cultural Center Campus. We are here to learn about healthy vocal techniques, aspects of performance, and music theory. Our objective is to work toward a common goal of fun, productive rehearsals, quality performances, and develop valuable knowledge of music and musicianship, as well as an appreciation of all genres of choral music. There will be opportunities for solos and leadership. Our goal is to work hard and work together.

Spend winter break with us at Torrance Day Camp. Winter Camp will include a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, hands on arts and crafts projects and fun walking field trips. Campers are placed in group activity rotations based on grade (1st through 5th). • Registration for camps and extended supervision ends one (1) week before camp begins. YOUTH LEAGUES Youth Basketball League Grades K-8 (grade as of September 2023)

Fee: $99

Leagues are tentatively scheduled to begin January 13 and run for 8 weeks. Grades K-5 will play on Saturdays. Grades 5-8 may play weeknights. Practice days and times are determined by coaches. Game days are subject to change.

Resident teams must submit full payment from a Torrance business, or submit a team roster with 75% of the players living within the Torrance city limits. Teams play 6 games including playoffs.

The Youth Basketball program is structured to teach basic fundamentals and rules of the game. Each player participates in every game. Individual sign-ups will be taken at all levels. All participants in this recreational league are separated by grade level, school and/or geographic location. Grades may be combined. Registration is limited.

The Victor E. Benstead Plunge is a 50 by 20 meter heated outdoor pool. The pool is divided into two 8-lane, 25-yard and 26 meter sections, and offers a variety of aquatic programs. Men’s and women’s locker room facilities are available for day use with restrooms and showers.

Proper swim attire is required to enter the pool and deck area. T-shirts, shorts, and street clothing are not allowed. Attire for more complete coverage such as a rash guards are permitted.

Each child less than 50 inches tall must be accompanied in the pool, and on the deck, by an adult (18+), within arm’s reach (maximum of one child per adult) for a 1:1 ratio of child to adult. For all instructional classes and programs – A late pick-up fee of $10 will be charged for every 15 minute interval (or portion thereof) for students that are picked up late. The clock at the facility is used to determine the time. The pool may close without notice in the event of lightening, unhealthy air quality or a mechanical issue with the pool, inability to staff pool. SWIM ASSESSMENT FOR AGES 4-12 Sunday, November 12

We offer swim level assessment for families who are unsure about their child’s swim level prior to registering. Our aquatic staff will assess students for all levels and recommend a level based on the assessment. Students need to arrive at the back gate of the pool. The latest arrival time for assessment will be 2:45pm. Students who arrive later than 2:45pm may not be able to participate in the assessment. Swim assessment will take no longer than 5 minutes per child once they are in the water. After the assessment is complete, you will be asked to leave promptly so that we can assist the next family. Please bring a towel, cap and goggles if desired. If you cannot attend the assessment, please register for the level you think your child is at based on the level descriptions. Students registering for the WRONG LEVEL will be removed from class and will NOT be eligible for any refund, credit or transfer (see level descriptions on the next page). Participation in the assessment DOES NOT guarantee enrollment in swim lessons.

The After School Club is sponsored by the City of Torrance Community Services Department. The program follows the Torrance Unified School District calendar and is offered only on days when school is in session between August and June. Programs are offered at the following schools:

PALS Social Club (People Actively Learning and Sharing) This is a Social Club for teens and adults with special needs. PALS offers recreation activities, monthly newsletter and more. The PALS annual membership fee is $20 residents/$25 non-residents, and covers January-December. The PALS fee includes the Adaptive Sports Programs

Adaptive Sports and Special Olympics This is an integrated sports program for those with special needs and their peers. Adaptive Sports programs include: basketball, bocce, lap swim, pickleball, soccer, and softball. The annual fee includes the PALS annual memberships and must be paid prior to participation.

IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

Seasonal changes also bring about changes in wildlife biology, behavior, and appearance. The urban coyote is no exception. During winter: •

Coyotes leave their family pack. Pups born in spring are now full grown. Most coyotes, born to the alpha male and alpha female of the pack, break away to find their own home range.

•

Coyotes without a mate search for a partner. Coyotes who leave their pack select a mate to establish new territory. In some cases a coyote may roam alone as a transient without a home range.

•

Coyotes mate. Once a year in January and February the alpha male and female of the pack mate.

HOW RESIDENTS CAN TAKE ACTION Once coyotes mate and the female is pregnant they begin to look for a safe, quiet space to den. Hillsides, overgrown foliage with protective cover, culverts and small hiding spaces are ideal for denning. Prevent potential coyote habitat near your home before denning season. By taking the steps listed below you reduce the likelihood that coyotes will visit your property or live nearby. Coyotes will forego inhospitable places without shelter, food or water. Instead coyotes will search for a quieter place near wilderness with more shelter to protect the pups. ✓ Complete the At-Home Coyote Prevention Checklist. Walk through the exterior of your home. Are there attractants that invite wildlife to your yard? Reduce or eliminate sources of food, water, or shelter. ✓ Trim ground-level shrubbery to reduce hiding spaces or potential den sites. Even though urban coyotes are accustomed to loud noises, cars and the presence of people they prefer to go unnoticed. Dense brush and foliage are ideal coyote hiding spaces as they search for food. ✓ Secure openings outside your home. Hiding spaces, such as a porch, deck, and shed, offer coyotes a place to den and hunt rodents.

Coyotes mate once a year. Studies indicate coyotes are a monogamous species. They mate for life. Only the alpha pair (one male and one female) in a pack mate to produce a litter. Other coyotes in the pack help feed and care for the pups.

City of Torrance: Pet Licensing All dogs in the City of Torrance are required to have an active license tag & up-to-date rabies vaccination. Please note, there are no exceptions and no special licenses for service animals. Pet owners have the responsibility to license their pets with the City of Torrance through DocuPet, the official pet licensing services provider. DocuPet’s mission is to provide a safe and happy home for all pets, and their services include great benefits such as full access to their HomeSafe 24/7 lost pet service, the option to purchase a designer license tag, and a user-friendly online portal. Licenses can be purchased: • Online at https://Torrance.DocuPet.Com/. This easy-to-use online licensing service provides a quick and seamless process to license your pet in the City of Torrance. o Online portal accessible via computer or any mobile device with internet access. Vaccination and sterilization records may be uploaded using a phone with a quick picture or an upload. • Mail: Download, print, and complete the Application Form found on the City’s Website under “+How to Purchase a Pet License”. Opioid Awareness and Resource Guide The Torrance Police Department’s goal is to prevent loss of life and educate the public on the extreme dangers of opioid addiction, mental health issues and homelessness. Many people require help with addiction, mental health and homelessness and don’t know where to turn to receive assistance with these services. This resource guide is designed to assist individuals in beginning the process of recovery.

Unfortunately, for the unsuspecting public, illicitly manufactured fentanyl can be dis-guised as prescription Oxycodone, Xanax, nasal sprays, eye drops and other forms of medication. Only two grains of fentanyl (the size of a few salt granules) are potent enough to put you at risk of an overdose. Naxalone is a safe medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids; however, it should not be relied upon.
