Մեր առաքելութեան ներշնչողը Թորոնթոհայութեան համար հայր Եղիա ծվ․ Գիրէջեանի վախճանումը հսկայական ու աներեւակայելի թուացող կորուստ մըն է. տասնամեակներ շարունակ մեր բոլորին սիրելի Վարդապետը եղած է մեր կեանքի անբաժան մէկ մասնիկը՝ ոչ միայն որպէս հոգեւորական, այլեւ որպէս օրինակելի ղեկավար, որուն ներկայութիւնը միշտ վստահութիւն եւ խաղաղութիւն կը ներշնչէր։ Ինծի համար հայր Եղիային կորուստը նաեւ անձնական եւ ընտանեկան յուզիչ հրաժեշտ մըն էր։ Մեր ընտանիքին համար հայ եկեղեցին միշտ եղած է մէկ ու անբաժանելի։ Մենք մեծցած ենք այն գիտակցութեամբ, որ հայ եկեղեցւոյ գմբէթը մէկ է՝ ըլլայ ան Առաքելական (Էջմիածնական թէ Կիլիկեան), Աւետարանական թէ Կաթողիկէ։ Հայր Եղիան այս համազգային սիրոյ եւ միասնութեան կենդանի մարմնաւորումն էր։ Իրեն համար քրիստոնէական առաքինութիւնն ու հայու ինքնութիւնը վեր էին ամէն տեսակ յարանուանական սահմաններէ։ Այո, ան կաթողիկէ հոգեւորական էր, սակայն կը հաւատար, որ մեր ուժը մեր միասնականութեան մէջ է, եւ իր դռները միշտ բաց էին բոլորին առջեւ՝ առանց որեւէ նախապայմանի կամ խտրականութեան։ Որպէս «Թորոնթոհայ»-ի խմբագիր, կրնամ հաստատել, որ հայր Եղիան պարզապէս մեր թերթին ընթերցողը կամ քաջալերողը չէր. անոր կերպարն ու համայնքային կեանքի հանդէպ ունեցած տեսլականը ներշնչման աղբիւր դարձան մեր թերթին որդեգրած առաքելութեան եւ սկզբունքներուն համար։ Մեր տեսլականը՝ ունենալ աշխուժ համայնք մը, որ հաւաքաբար կը նշէ իր յաջողութիւնները, եւ մեր առաքելութիւնը՝ ըլլալ հարթակ մը բոլորին համար, ուղղակիօրէն կ’արտացոլացնեն այն արժէքները, զորս հայր Եղիան կը դաւանէր ու կ’ապրէր ամէն օր։ Անոր ոգեւորութիւնը, երբ ամէն ամիս առաջինը կը ստանար թերթին նոր թիւը, մեզի համար պատուոյ նշան էր եւ վկայութիւն մը, որ մենք կը քալենք իր մատնանշած համերաշխութեան ուղիով։ Հայր Եղիան օրինակելի առաջնորդ էր, որուն առաքինութիւնը կը կայանար իր համեստութեան եւ անշահախնդիր ծառայութեան մէջ։ Ան մեզի ցոյց տուաւ, թէ ինչպէ՛ս կարելի է ըլլալ լաւ քրիստոնեայ եւ լաւ թորոնթոհայ։ Այսօր մենք կը սգանք իր կորուստը, բայց նաեւ կը տօնենք իր վաստակաշատ կեանքը, որ պիտի շարունակէ ուղեցոյց ըլլալ մեր համայնքի ապագայ սերունդներուն համար։ «Թորոնթոհայ»-ի այս թիւը սիրով կը ձօնենք հայր Եղիային պայծառ յիշատակին՝ որպէս յարգանքի տուրք այն հոգեւորականին, որ եղաւ այս թերթին հաւատարիմ ջատագովն ու մեր առաքելութեան ներշնչողը։ Յիշատակն արդարոց օրհնութեամբ եղիցի։ ֎ Ռուբէն Ճանպազեան, խմբագիր
The inspiration behind our mission Father Elias Kirijian was a man whose presence in Toronto felt as permanent and reassuring as the foundations of the church he built. For decades, he was a source of warmth and steady guidance whose inf luence spanned generations, feeling to many of us like a cherished relative and a self less soul whose door was always open. Growing up, the definition of being Armenian was never confined by denominational lines. In our family, we were raised with the understanding that an Armenian church was simply an Armenian church. Whether it was Apostolic, Evangelical, or Catholic, it made no difference to our family; we felt at home under every dome. Father Elias was the living embodiment of this philosophy. While he was a deeply committed Catholic priest, he never allowed labels to limit his love for his people. To him, being a ‘good Christian’ and a ‘good Armenian’ meant fostering a unity that transcended the qualifiers that so often divide us. As the editor of Torontohye, I often ref lect on how much Hayr Yeghia’s character actually shaped the DNA of this publication. He didn't only support our work, but also inspired our very mission. Our vision of a vibrant community that collectively celebrates its successes, and our commitment to being a platform for all Toronto Armenians regardless of their background, are direct ref lections of the life he led. He was the embodiment of the inclusivity and positive encouragement we strive to promote. Every month, his excitement at being the first to receive the newest issue was a badge of honour for us—a reminder that we were fulfilling the community spirit he so tirelessly championed. Our dear Vartabed leaves behind a legacy that is not just written in the stones of the church complex he founded, but in the values of the community he helped knit together. He was a man of immense virtue, modesty, and strength who showed us that true leadership lies in humble, self less service. While we will miss his physical presence, his example will remain the guiding star as we continue to build, celebrate, and share the story of our community. This issue of Torontohye—the paper he championed and inspired from its very inception—is dedicated with profound love and gratitude to his blessed memory.
