The Republic of South Africa is certainly better known for its gold mines than for its quarrying industry. In a fast developing country like this, however, there is also a lot of quarry work to be done, producing materials for the cement industry, road building and general building purposes. The capital Johannesburg is situated inland at a height of about 2000 m above sea level, the city of Cape Town is an important port in the southwestern corner.
The Hippo Quarries Group, part of Anglo Alpha Cement Group is a large quarrying organization, operating quarries throughout the Republic of South Africa. The Eikenhoff Quarry (Quarry No 2) is situated near to Johannesburg, and the Peninsula Quarry (Quarry No 1) is located near to Cape Town.
The Material:

Material to be loaded is large to average fragmented rock, occasionally even big boulders, and also partly well blasted mixed rock and earth overburden.
Site Organization: Normal drilling and blasting carried out and material loaded at face on dumptrucks to be transported to primary crusher. Alternate faces worked.
