Acera’s in-person Summer Programs run from June 10 through August 23, 2024, enabling kids ages 5 and older to take on enticing projects, from electronic art and robotics to woodworking and science experiments. Sessions run in mornings, afternoons, or for full days. of marine science through a unique hands-on curriculum that combines biological, physical, and chemical oceanography with field, classroom, offshore, and laboratory work. More than 200 students attend AIO from all over the United States and around the world each year. Each session is limited to 44 students who spend two exciting weeks working with experienced staff. Depending on the student’s age and grade level, Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced sessions are offered. The first Advanced session allows a limited number of students to earn college credit through the University of Maine Machias’ Early College Program. Students who perform well Acadia Institute of Oceanography in the summer can apply to one of AIO’s winter programs. Students 14 years and older can apply for the Florida Exploration Program, and Advanced session alums may apply for the Tropical Program in Belize. These trips are offered in alternating years during Thanksgiving week in November. At the heart of the AIO program is an experienced and qualified core of educators trained in the field of oceanography. These are classroom teachers, practicing scientists, and researchers — many with advanced graduate degrees. The student-instructor ratio is approximately 4-to-1.

Five Academic Workshops — Writing, Debate and Public Speaking, Innovation Lab, Biotechnology, and Math — are geared toward students seeking enrichment in an intellectually challenging and engaging environment. Taught by experienced faculty, each workshop will be small to allow for individualized instruction and to promote teamwork and cooperation. Focused on scholarly growth, academic collaboration, and personal achievement, these workshops promise to prepare students for the next school year and to inspire a lifelong love of learning. St. Sebastian’s six Athletic Clinics — Baseball, Basketball, Flag Football, Lacrosse, Soccer, and Squash — give athletes the chance to grow in their favorite sport while taking St. Sebastian’s Summer Programs advantage of state-of-the-art athletic fields and facilities. Each clinic is run by seasoned coaches and staffed by current and former varsity athletes. Participants in St. Sebastian’s Summer Programs come away with increased confidence, concrete skills, and new friendships.
