"Depression is the most pressing mental health concern among students due to pressure from their family and financial problems," school nurse Noel Bustillo remarked

In addition, Bustillo also emphasized the importance of parents in supporting students as their biggest concern because of the inability to intervene as these issues happen within the family

students and the community about the consequences of such behaviors

Moreover, the office also provides essential support to victims of violence, conducting home visits to rescue at-risk youth from abusive environments and offering them shelter

For students who have committed offenses, the MSWD offers a six-month intervention program designed to help them reform and reintegrate into society

Financial assistance is also made available to address underlying issues that may contribute to these behaviors

"Social media significantly impacts the learning and mental status of students, such as academic pressure, and serves as a platform for public discrimination without considering the consequences of such use," added Noel

Moreover, some of the signs to identify students with potential mental health challenges inside the school are absenteeism and unexplained violent behavior in the classroom

The school also recorded one case of suicide and dropout cases last year due to mental health problems

When Every New Leader Brings a New System

Astrongpromiseforbettereducation yetfornearlyadecade,whathasbeenevidentareconstant revisionsandineffectivereformsthatgraduallylosemeaning.Ratherthanseriouslytransformingthe country'seducationsystem,thoseinpowercontinuetointroduceabruptcurriculumchanges,leaving thoseatthereceivingendtobeartheconsequences

letter to the editor

I am writing to express my concern about the current state of our school library It lacks updated books and references, which limits our ability to access the materials we need for research and study

The books and shelves are often unorganized, making it difficult to find specific resources There are also times when the library is closed or unavailable during important hours Additionally, the facility is unclean, poorly ventilated, and uncomfortable for students who need a quiet and conducive space for learning

Humbly hoping that this matter will be given attention, I braved writing to you on behalf of the other affected students

Thank you for considering our concerns

The most significant educational reform in the Philippines was signed by President Benigno Aquino III in 2013 It aimed to align the country's education system with global standards, now more commonly known as the K-12 curriculum

Later on, as Leonor Briones became the new DepEd Secretary, she continued to introduce modifications and refinements to the curriculum, becoming widely accepted in public schools

Just when institutions were slowly integrating back into the curriculum during recovery from the pandemic, Briones stepped down from her position, and Vice President Sara Duterte assumed her role of DepEd Secretary Under her leadership, the MATATAG curriculum was introduced to address the issues and shortcomings with the previous K12 However, it became a controversial shift in the country’s education system, receiving backlash for shortened classes and additional workload that took a toll on educators. Additionally, under the new curriculum is the shortest school year, intensifying the burden on both teachers and students

Later on, before Duterte’s curriculum could be fully implemented, she submitted her resignation letter and officially stepped down from the position A month later, Senator Sonny Angara was appointed as the new secretary, now dealing with the unresolved flaws and challenges that Duterte left behind With the shift of officials in the span of seven years, one would expect significant progress from past to present However, the focus only remained on making short-term, rushed policies rather than well-planned and effective ones Furthermore, these transitions and changes continue to take place under lacking circumstances No matter how much a curriculum is modified, the absence of adequate facilities, learning materials, manpower, and preparations only makes it challenging for teachers and students to adjust

Additionally, with the frequent changes in learning strategies, disruption of classes continues to happen, with teachers needing to adapt to the changes brought by the higherups If this cycle persists where

every new official introduces a different curriculum or system there will be no real progress in the country’s educational status. The weight of these constant changes will fall heavily on students and teachers, creating an unstable learning environment At this point, these reforms can no longer be considered a method to prepare learners for the real world but rather a hindrance to their academic growth With every adjustment, the challenge of delivering quality education becomes even more uncertain

The promise of improvement remains distant as revisions and policy changes overshadow meaningful and long-term solutions Instead of pushing for repeated modifications with no clear impact, attention must be given to addressing teacher and student problems and ensuring implementations with stable and consistent execution Without this, the country will remain stuck in an endless loop of educational instability, unable to overcome its ongoing curriculum crisis

The Irony Of Grade Inflation In Philippine Education

Inthepast,receivinghonorswasasourceofgreatpridesinceitacknowledgeddiligence,sacrifice,sleepless nights,andself-control Onlythosewhotrulyexcelledanddemonstratedmasteryoftheirteachingswereeligible Today,however,itappearslikeanyonewhoispreparedtoworkeventhesmallestamountofeffortcanvirtually makeitintothehonorlist Akeypointraisedbytherisingnumberoflearnersonthehonorrolliswhetheracademic excellenceisactuallyimprovingorifgradesarebeingraisedtocreateanillusionofsuccess.

Honor students have increased dramatically in recent years as a result of DepEd Memorandum No 8, s 2015, which grants academic distinction to pupils who achieve an average of at least 90 I remember when I was in elementary school, only about 10 out of 40 students made it to the honor roll By high school, the number had tripled making the honor roll no longer considered a remarkable accomplishment but rather the standard This change suggests a more urgent problem: grade inflation, which is becoming more and more common

Grade inflation is the practice of giving pupils more higher grades, frequently without taking into account their true academic performance With DepEd's transmutation table, it gives the appearance of academic advancement by converting a failing grade such as 60 into a passing mark of 75 This risks rewarding poor performance and undermines genuine excellence Instead of challenging students to reach their full potential, it ensures progression for even the least capable learners while undervaluing exceptional ones

...itis crucialto recognize thataccess towater is abasic right, nota privilege.

The title "With Honors" is now often given to students meeting only the bare minimum, equating their recognition with those who strive for excellence This practice diminishes the value of hard work, perseverance, and real academic achievement

Despite the rising number of honor students, the Philippines continues to rank poorly in global education metrics, such as the 2022 PISA, where it placed 77th out of 81 nations in reading, math, and science This highlights that the increase in honors does not equate to real academic improvement but instead conceals deeper systemic issues

The value of academic accomplishment is eventually diminished by grade inflation, creating a generation that associates success with entitlement rather than hard work We risk learners who are unprepared for the challenges of the outside world if we keep going in this direction Only by maintaining high academic standards and encouraging genuine excellence can we make sure that these students is prepared to handle life's challenges with competence, selfassurance, and a sincere sense of achievement

and water scarcity contributes to the problem

Last, in the context of hygiene, some students fail to practice cleanliness in restrooms which exacerbates the situation

Amidst this issue, students devised ways to acquire water, such as ordering large quantities from water stations and fetching water from faucets with running water

Although those are temporary solutions, one particular question arises, “Shouldn’t the school be equipped to handle its own water needs?”

According to DepEd Order No 10, Series of 2016, Comprehensive Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Schools (WinS) Program, every school must have access to clean water, proper sanitation facilities, and hygiene education within the school setting However, water accessibility within the school has not been attained despite the order being issued

In addressing the water scarcity at Trento NHS, administrators, staff, students, and local stakeholders must collaborate to resolve this long-term issue

Implementing rules such as recycling wastewater, developing water filtration systems, harvesting rainwater, and reducing water usage are some of the ways to solve water shortage according to some experts

Despite this issue, it is crucial to recognize that water accessibility is a basic right, not a privilege By taking action on this matter, we not only ensure the health and well-being of students, faculty, and staff but also build a more sustainable future for the school Through everyone's collaboration, we can make a positive change in the school by starting with the most basic yet important resource water

blind eye to the legal and safety have permitted their children to drive motorcycles when going to school, explaining the casual attitude among student-drivers, despite their lack of legal authorization However, the reality is that students, especially minors, should not be driving, more so without a license

Republic Act No 4136, also known as the Land Transportation and Traffic Code states that comprehensive legislation covers a wide range of traffic regulations, including driving without a license and reckless driving that could result in a fine of P3,000 00, underscoring the seriousness of the act

Furthermore, according to Arrive Alive, teen drivers aged 16-19 years are four times more likely to crash than older drivers, accounting for their lack of experience in the road Most of these underaged drivers are men, and they tend to rely on their confidence in handling a vehicle, often turning a

regulations meant to protect them

This is where parents come in Parents play a big role in influencing and shaping students' attitudes toward driving While many parents permit their children to use motorcycles, they may not fully understand the risks associated with underage driving or the legal consequences As such, parents must recognize their responsibility in enforcing safe practices and ensuring that their children abide by traffic laws

School administrators and local authorities should impose strict rules and educate student-drivers on the harm and risks of underage driving, as well as the consequences of such action While driving ourselves to school sounds more convenient, it's better to wait until we're of age and have the legal requirements before we steer and hit the roads

The school should connect with the government. I believe we can provide the help that the school needs to sort this problem, such as arranging an event with a psychology specialist for these students

The recent Senate Bill no 1979 or the Anti-Teenage Pregnancy Bill proposed by Senator Risa Hontiveros sought to address this growing concern through sex education However, it has sparked backlash, especially from conservative groups Despite the criticism, I strongly believe that sex education is crucial in tackling this issue effectively

Studies show that countries with comprehensive sex education programs (like the Netherlands and Sweden) have significantly lower teenage pregnancy rates In the Philippines, misconceptions about contraception and reproduction are common, but sex education can correct these and help teens make responsible choices

Moreover, research by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) indicates that comprehensive sex education does not encourage teens to engage in sexual activity; rather, it delays it Students are provided with

Career guidance is meant to be a vital part of a school's efforts to help students make informed decisions about their future It should provide them with a deeper understanding of various career paths, enabling them to align their choices with their skills and aspirations However, does dressing up in costumes often unrelated to actual career goals really help students navigate their future?

Andrew Gardose, a STEM student at TNHS, shared his sentiments in an interview: “The school's yearly career guidance event feels more like a dress-up activity Some students just wear whatever is available, even if it has nothing to do with what they want to become ” He added that he does not feel any real guidance from the event

people in understanding themselves their abilities, interests, and limitations while also providing relevant information about potential career paths

But does the current format of career guidance at TNHS achieve this goal? Shekainah Tecson, an alumna of the school, shared her experience: “It was never in my mind to be a flight attendant I just wore the uniform during the career guidance event because it was the only thing available for rental ”

If students are simply dressing up without real connections to their future goals, the event loses its intended purpose of inspiring and guiding them Instead of focusing on appearances, career guidance should provide meaningful exposure to various professions, giving students practical insights and experiences that help them explore their options

To bridge these gaps, schools should organize symposiums that foster direct interactions between students and professionals These

As the Philippines prepares for the 2025 midterm elections on May 12, the country enters a crucial period where voters hold the key to shaping its future Those seeking positions as senators, congressmen, and local officials are granted a period to appeal to and persuade voters While the official campaign period began on February 11 for senatorial and party-list candidates, those running for local positions are not permitted to campaign before March 28 However, a report from Rappler indicates that many communities have already witnessed political advertisements in public spaces These include not only banners and billboards but also vote solicitation disguised as public programs and government services, raising concerns about premature campaigning Premature campaigning refers to any activity by a political candidate aimed at promoting themselves

before the official campaign period It is considered an election offense under Section 80 of Batas Pambansa Blg 881, also known as the “Omnibus Election Code of the Philippines ” However, a 2009 ruling determined that aspirants are not considered official candidates until the campaign period begins As a result, there is no law directly prohibiting or penalizing them, allowing many to act fearlessly

The designated 90-day campaign period for national candidates and 45 days for local candidates should be sufficient to present their platforms and gain public support unless they lack confidence in their ability to earn the trust of the people through legitimate means If aspirants believe that such tactics will improve their chances of winning, then they are prioritizing prominence over genuine leadership Furthermore, this practice extends beyond

government elections and can also be evident in student politics

Just as political candidates apply various tactics to gain early support, student leaders may subtly promote themselves before official campaign periods begin This not only violates ethical standards but also demonstrates a lack of respect for the electoral process and the student body, who deserve fair and transparent elections

To address this common practice, transparency and integrity should first begin within communities

Although there are no national laws addressing premature campaigning, fairness and authenticity must be instilled in localities, especially in schools, as elections for the next student body approach At Trento NHS, measures to ensure fairness during campaigns are evident, emphasizing its importance to aspiring student leaders

Beyond the candidates, voters also play a crucial role in the process by remaining firm and discerning in their choices It is essential for them to carefully evaluate who they will entrust with leadership As the campaign period progresses, it serves as an opportunity to assess the qualifications, integrity, and dedication of aspiring leaders It is not a mere game of fame, but a proof of serious commitment to genuine public service

The World Health Organization defines gender as the characteristics, norms, behaviors, and roles associated with being male or female that are socially constructed Historically, many legal systems and policies have been designed around the gender binary model Meanwhile, supporters of the two-gender classification believe that a person’s identity should align with their biological characteristics This perspective has long influenced school policies, from gender-specific uniforms and restrooms to student records, inforcing a fixed understanding of gender

However, gender is not determined by one’s sex but is shaped by personal identity and societal experiences, explaining why recognition of multiple genders has emerged today Because they are rejected by society, there is a clear emphasis on the importance of recognizing diverse gender

identities, which can be applicable to a school environment When schools fail to acknowledge students with different genders, these individuals often face discrimination, exclusion, and mental struggles, which can hinder their academic performance and overall well-being Furthermore, it would have significant implications Policies restricting bathroom access and participation in activities could alienate students whose identities do not conform to traditional norms Teachers and school administrators may also encounter challenges in addressing gender diversity while ensuring that all students feel respected and valued Nevertheless, the controversy over whether schools should adapt to evolving gender perspectives has long been cleared by the Department of Education (DepEd) With its primary mission to protect every Filipino’s right to complete

basic education in a child-friendly, gender-sensitive, safe, and motivating environment, restricting students’ access to education based on gender identity would simply contradict its values In September 2022, DepEd released a memorandum reiterating its gender-responsive basic education policy that allows all students to freely express their gender expression inside its institutions

While traditional perspectives on gender have long influenced societal norms, it is crucial to acknowledge and adapt to evolving understandings of identity By accommodating diverse gender perspectives, schools can foster an inclusive and considerate environment, ensuring all students, regardless of gender, feel safe, heard, and valued In doing so, education can continue as a fundamental right for all, regardless of differences

many may be eligible to run, not everyone possesses the qualities necessary to lead effectively Unfortunately, some seek leadership positions for prestige rather than a genuine desire to serve This mirrors the political landscape, where figures with little to no credibility manage to secure positions of power

Article II, Section 4 of the 1987 Constitution states that the

government’s primary duty is to serve and protect the people However, holding a position of power does not always guarantee that one upholds this responsibility with integrity Leadership is not merely a privilege it demands competence, credibility, and an unwavering commitment to public welfare

A community thrives or suffers under the governance of its elected officials The government steers the nation, while the people entrust them with that honor With such privilege comes a heavy responsibility one that must be carried by capable and credible individuals Yet in today’s reality, true statesmanship has become a rarity

In a government, or any organization, leadership should be earned through competence, dedication, and moral integrity not mere ambition or popularity In student governance, if we expect future leaders to embody integrity and accountability, it is imperative that these values be instilled early on Public officials wield significant power, shaping policies, impacting communities, and defining the nation’s future It is, therefore, the people’s duty to scrutinize those who seek to lead and ensure that their trust is truly deserved

Sleep deprivation has become a common struggle among students. Cosplay, as a form of storytelling, is a fun and meaningful celebration of the profound impact reading has on how we view the world and ourselves It’s more than just putting on a costume it’s about stepping into the world of literature, making the stories we love come alive, and embracing the imagination that literature sparks In every stitch and detail, these costumes remind us that reading shapes our identities, fuels our creativity, and connects us to the worlds we can only dream of

As a direct consequence of this dilemma, classrooms have a lack of access to educational books regarding each subjects In addition, student researchers also lack access to related literatures for their studies

For a library to be efficient, students need to have as much access to learnable resources as possible in order to develop into functioning adults They can learn and develop their intelligence with the help of books, computers, and encyclopedias If there isn’t enough room in a school for these essential resources, students learning might be impaired Thus, school libraries should be available to students and staffs by educational establishments A library where students can freely peruse hundreds if not thousands of books and study materials Additionally, a library is expected to be a peaceful area for studying, tutoring, and project work

A bookless library, akin to an empty shell Barren, meaningless and futile, that’s the scene students face every time they go to the TNHS

Library in hopes to indulge themselves with a good book Deserted, desolate, that’s the state of the library here in Trento National High School How can a school be expected to nourish student’s minds without the assistance of books? How can we utilize books when the students themselves are not interested? How can we make students interested when a library has an inadequate amount of books available?

These are the paradoxical questions we must ponder in order to resolve the problem at hand We must be aware what a good library should look like, how many books there should be, how accessible these books should be We must also be aware of the detrimental effects of having insufficient books Moving forward, we must envision a future where the sanctity of a library is preserved and honored A future where the TNHS library is filled with doeeyed students reading in awe, charting a course through their favorite fantasy worlds and most importantly, we must envision a library where students can learn invaluable life lessons

At first, Jine didn’t realize she was entering a male-dominated field “Wala ko kabalo (I didn’t know) because there are other girls who also like this strand,” she said When she arrived, her male classmates didn’t react as she had feared Instead of skepticism or judgment, Jine was welcomed with camaraderie and respect “They treated me like a princess,” she said, recalling her surprise at how supportive they were

In the Philippines, the K-12 program has added another layer of complexity to students' academic lives Senior high school students face a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare them for higher education or employment However, this preparation comes with immense pressure The question, "What are your college plans?" often triggers anxiety, as it symbolizes not just the future but also the expectations of families and society Many Filipino students aspire to attend state universities and other prestigious schools The competition is fierce, and the stakes are high

The pressure is tangible in the daily routines of students For months, they juggle academic tasks, extracurricular commitments, and the looming weight of college applications They scour the internet for scholarship opportunities, prepare admission requirements, and spend hours reviewing for college entrance exams like the UPCAT, ACET, or DOST-SEI Scholarship Qualifying Exam This balancing act takes a toll on their mental health, as they strive to meet expectations from their families, communities, and themselves

The feeling of heaviness manifests in various ways It’s seen in the furrowed brows of students solving complex equations, in the late nights spent perfecting essays, and in the sleepless mornings fueled by coffee or energy drinks For many, the process feels like their entire future hinges on these moments In a country where financial challenges are common, securing a scholarship or gaining admission to a public university can mean the difference between pursuing a dream or putting it on hold

As deadlines approach, the pressure intensifies The scent of freshly sharpened pencils and the glow of computer screens become constant companions For some students, this is a waiting game anticipating results from universities or scholarship committees For others, it is a time of reflection on their efforts and dreams Despite the stress, there is a glimmer of hope Filipino students are known for their resilience and determination The values instilled by their families and the bayanihan spirit drive them to persevere

Pastil, a traditional Filipino dish originating from Maguindanao, is not just convenient but also nutritionally beneficial Packed with protein, carbohydrates, iron, and essential vitamins, it provides the energy students need to get through a demanding school day Wrapped in banana leaves, pastil also supports environmental sustainability by reducing plastic waste

As students rush to school early in the morning, many skip breakfast an essential meal that fuels cognitive function and physical endurance This is where pastil comes in Its affordability, ease of consumption, and satisfying nature make it an ideal choice for students

“Ga kaon jud ko permi ug pastil kay maka-busog, lami tapos dali ra kaonon Maka hatag siya ug satisfaction” (“I usually eat pastil because it makes me full; it is good and it's easy to eat It gives me satisfaction”) stated Chris Dolly Ayala, a student of Grade 10 - SPJ Aileen Naparan, School Nurse II, also explained that it’s okay to eat pastil as breakfast “I prefer it rather than eating junk foods but it's not okay to be consumed

Moreover, while pastil provides sustenance, nutritionists emphasize the importance of dietary variety According to a study from PMC (PubMed Central), breakfast consumption significantly impacts adolescent mental and physical health Beyond just eating breakfast, the quality of the meal plays a crucial role in brain function, memory retention, and overall wellbeing

In both science and nutrition, balance is key Just as no single scientific method solves all problems, no single food can provide all essential nutrients While pastil is a convenient and satisfying option, relying solely on it may lead to nutrient gaps A well-rounded diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and protein sources ensures long-term health and cognitive performance

At the intersection of tradition and science, pastil remains a practical and cultural staple Its accessibility and nourishment make it a valuable meal choice, but like all aspects of health, moderation and variety remain essential for sustained well-being

For these students, coffee is more than just a beverage; it transcends its role as a mere drink it becomes a ritual, a habit, a symbol of resilience against the overwhelming demands of final exams The perceived effect a surge of energy enabling all-night study sessions is a potent blend of physiological and psychological factors This temporary boost allows students to push through, tackling lessons across different subjects

Alexi B Dinampo, a Grade 12 student, described her experience: “I used to rely on coffee because I feared I wouldn’t function and study well without it It made me feel sharper and helped me remember things, at least initially ”

However, she admitted that the downsides were significant Her heart would palpitate, she became easily irritated, and she felt intense anxiety She deeply regretted using coffee as a study strategy and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, as there are far healthier ways to

manage stress and stay focused

The primary driver is caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant that blocks adenosine, a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation and sleep By inhibiting adenosine, caffeine increases alertness, improves concentration, and enhances cognitive performance at least in the short term This effect is especially pronounced in sleepdeprived individuals, explaining its appeal to stressed students

Caffeine offers a temporary reprieve from fatigue

According to Ms Aileen Naparan, the School Nurse: “Coffee, like energy drinks, provides a temporary alertness boost But for students, especially those pulling all-nighters, it’s a dangerous path It’s tempting, yes, but most students tend to drink far too much Excessive coffee consumption can lead to heart problems, high blood pressure, and damage to internal organs ”

Beyond the physiological effects, the psychological impact is equally significant The anticipation of the caffeine boost creates a placebo effect, further enhancing feelings of increased energy and focus However, this is only a short-term solution

Chronic sleep deprivation negatively impacts cognitive function, memory, and overall well-being The boost is temporary, and the subsequent crash can severely hinder academic performance Ultimately, the perceive effectiveness of coffee is about caffeine; it’s the co interplay of psychologic physiological expectatio it might serve as a shortcrutch, long-term succe demands a more holistic approach The true secre excelling in exams or in academic endeavor is magical cup of coffee bu balanced lifestyle

Fake cosmetics, frequently sold at bargain prices, pose a significant risk to consumers The Bureau of Customs reported confiscating 600 million pesos worth of fake beauty products in 2022 alone, including soaps, perfumes, and whitening lotions These items not only disregard sanitation guidelines but also contain dangerous ingredients like arsenic and mercury, which can lead to severe health issues Other toxic substances commonly found in fake makeup include lead, cadmium, and formaldehyde, each with its own set of negative effects These chemicals have been known to cause cancer, acne, eczema and other health issues when absorbed by the skin

Moreover, the charm of affordability comes at the expense of quality and satisfaction Buyer preferences in the Philippines vary widely, making it challenging to reproduce the desired results advertised by authentic items The lack of FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval further worsens the hazard, as legitimate products undergo testing to ensure

security and efficacy

Affordable makeups do come with advantages, such as accessibility and affordability, making them enticing options for budget-conscious buyers In any case, the disadvantages, including potential health hazards and subpar quality, far outweigh the benefits

The interest in beauty should not come at the expense of health and safety As students of Trento National High School explore the entanglement of beauty items, it is important to prioritize authenticity and FDA approval By making informed choices and advocating for safer options, students and individuals can protect themselves from the pitfalls of fake cosmetics and embrace genuine beauty with confidence

Dandruff has an understandable fascinating scientific explanation It is a skin condition that causes white or yellow skin flakes on your scalp It may be itchy and spread to your eyebrows especially to the hairline Dandruff is a simple form of seborrheic dermatitis a common skin condition that causes itchy patches and greasy scales on your skin where you have a lot of oil also called sebaceous glands Studies showed that the core contributor of dandruff is Malassezia a genus of yeast or fungus that lives on our body As it requires fats to grow, it stays at the sebaceous glands on the scalp, face, and upper part

of our bodies When Malassezia penetrates extensively, it feeds oil on your skin When your skin is irritated, it will make more oil and skin cells to help soothe the irritation Then the extra skin cells will die and fall off, the one we see as dandruff Moreover, healthline com stated that exposure to sun, stress, forcefully brushing hair, and frequent usage of shampoo are also the reasons for having dandruff For instance, exposure to sun can cause sweat on our hair and also stress in doing tasks in learning which are some miserable evident factors experienced by adolescent students

Nonetheless, there are proactive steps to take to eliminate the impacts of this skin condition Measures such as buying prescribed shampoo to combat dandruff, applying baking soda, aloe vera oil and calamansi extract with Vitamin C while taking a bath, can help prevent the formation of flaky scalps

Exploring the scientific background about dandruff, and applying the proactive measures to break down its impacts on our body, can open a door to express ourselves with confidence, armed with knowledge to freely blow the dusts of adolescence’ burden

LUNG LABYRINTH

UnmaskingTuberculosisInfection

Despiteadvancementsinmedicalscience,diseasesremainapersistentchallengeinthePhilippines.Among them,tuberculosis(TB)continuestoposeasignificantthreat,affectingindividualsregardlessofage Itspreads silently,oftenundetected,makingitdifficulttocontrolandeliminate

For one Trento National High School (TNHS) student, Alan (not their real name), the reality of TB became personal After being diagnosed with tuberculosis, Alan had to miss two weeks of classes to begin a rigorous six-month treatment plan

The intensive phase lasted two months, targeting the bacteria with a combination of four antibiotics This was followed by a four-month maintenance phase to ensure complete recovery After completing the treatment, Alan successfully overcame the disease a testament to the effectiveness of modern TB therapy

Tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, an airborne bacterium that spreads through microscopic droplets expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even speaks Once inhaled, the bacteria can settle in the lungs, leading to prolonged cough, chest pain, fatigue, weight loss, fever, and night sweats Many infected individuals remain asymptomatic in the early stages, unknowingly contributing to the disease’s transmission

“Dili vaccine ang tambal sa TB (The cure for TB is not through a vaccine)” TB DOTS staff Maam

Christina V Mediano explained on the availability of vaccines and medication available to treat TB Anti-TB treatments begin with an intensive phase lasting two months combining four antibiotic drugs namely Isoniazid, Rifampin, Pyrazinamide, and Ethambutol This is then followed by a four-month maintenance phase that involves combining rifampin and isoniazid This approach is highly effective in curing Tuberculosis, with Alan (not their real name), being a testament to the efficacy of undergoing Anti-TB treatments

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), TB ranked as the 8th leading cause of death in the country in 2024 In Trento, Agusan del Sur alone, 164 cases were recorded in 2023 By 2024, cases had increased by 11 59%, totaling 183 infections The youngest recorded patient was nine months old, while the oldest was 80 years old, highlighting TB’s indiscriminate reach

CasesofTuberculosisinTrentoin2023and2024

Trentohanons were recorded with the disease in 2023

Medical intervention remains the key to combating TB The standard treatment involves a two-month intensive phase using a combination of isoniazid, rifampin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol, followed by a four-month maintenance phase with rifampin and isoniazid This regimen is highly effective when followed strictly However, TB prevention requires more than just treatment it demands awareness, early detection, and responsible hygiene practices

"Knowing that TB is in our community makes me more cautious It's important to take care of our health and be mindful of others," expressed a TNHS student in an interview

Preventing TB’s spread involves practicing proper cough etiquette, regular testing, and ensuring timely treatment While medical science continues to advance, the best defense remains education, awareness, and proactive health measures Understanding how TB works empowers communities to prevent its transmission and protect those most vulnerable

Ghostly Aroma

“Bahogudugiloksikuan”

Muttered one student as they passed by their classmate, crinkling their nose at the unmistakable scent floating from their underarms It’s a common scenario, especially in Trento National High School But what exactly causes this phenomenon, and why does it seem

to plague so many students?

Body odor, especially the kind from the underarms, has a captivating and understandable scientific explanation

it all starts The majority of our body is covered in eccrine glands, which

generate odorless sweat mostly made of salt and water, and apocrine glands, which are located in places with dense hair follicles, such as our underarms

Bacteria on our skin love to eat the thicker fluid that these glands produce, which contains iPods and proteins, that causes them to produce foul odor

Yes, you read that right microbes Despite their tiny size these tiny organisms play a significant part in the smell radiating from our underarms When they break down the proteins and fats in our sweat, they release volatile organic compounds, or vocs, that provide the particular odor we associate with body odor

Moreover, genetics, hygiene habits, diet, and even stress can all impact the composition of our sweat and the bacteria living in our

skin And during the adolescent years, hormonal changes can kick these factors into overdrive, leading to the infamous “high school misery” that many students experience

Additionally, while it's impossible to completely eliminate it-there are steps students can take to minimize its impact Regular bathing with soap and water can help reduce the number of bacteria on the skin, while wearing breathable fabrics and using deodorants can help control sweat and cover any remaining odor

Understanding the science behind body odor can empower students more to take control of their personal hygiene and confidently sail the now-and-then smelly waters of adolescence Just as ghostly whispers are made clear when light is shed upon them, so too can the unseen culprit behind body odor be understood

The core objective of their study is to explore the potential of utilizing the banana stem fiber as an alternative, raw, natural material for producing environmentally friendly paper bags aimed to reduce the erratic usage of plastic bags and cellophanes

Additionally, the Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) Adviser of Trento National High School stated that," Since ang atong school Kay namroblema sa papel, nindot gyud Siya nga product Kay mas dali malata ang banana stem compared sa papel Aside from that, pwede nato mahimo ang Alternative Paper Bag as product sa atong school "

Knowingly, as the Philippines is an agricultural country depending on its natural resources, it is a significant producer of bananas As a result, it faces challenges in urgent disposal of banana pseudo stems

Therefore, the process of turning those stems into a newly made plastic bag is crucial to

The trees, quietly providing shade, fresh air, and a sense of calm, are taken for granted, seen merely as part of the school’s landscape rather than something of value These trees, though, offer much more than just visual appeal; they are silent partners in the school environment, contributing to the well-being of the students and the entire school community in ways that go beyond their mere presence

Much like the students, many people go through life taking nature for granted Trees, green spaces, and the environment often fade into the background of busy lives, overlooked and underappreciated The vital role they play in sustaining the planet and supporting human well-being is rarely considered Recognizing this, the Youth for Environment in School Organization (YES-O) of our school took action to reconnect students with nature by organizing the "Hugging a Tree" event during the Annual Hearts Day Celebration This initiative aims to redefine how students perceive the value of trees, proving that they are more than

Students actively engaged in DRRR initiatives and programs must recognize that adequate sleep is not just beneficial it is indispensable Their participation, fueled by sufficient rest, significantly enhances the community’s ability to navigate emergencies

The connection between sleep and effective blood donation is multifaceted and profoundly impactful Sleep deprivation directly compromises a donor's physiological state Insufficient sleep diminishes blood volume, increasing the risk of adverse reactions such as dizziness, headaches, and fainting during or after donation Since every unit of blood is critical, a sleep-deprived donor may be unable to provide a safe and effective donation

"Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction underscores the critical need for a readily available blood supply during emergency response Disasters severely disrupt community health systems, affecting blood access and transportation A sufficient blood supply is crucial for immediate response a proactive measure that saves lives," shared Gift Maslog, a DRRR subject teacher and registered nurse

She further explained that blood donation in DRRR is about mitigating the impact of disasters reducing casualties and lifethreatening situations Educating students about the significance of preparedness enables them to contribute to essential medical care

Importantly, a well-rested donor ensures a safer and more successful blood donation, minimizing complications and maximizing blood quality for recipients

Sleep is paramount for immune function A well-rested body is better equipped to withstand the minor stress of blood donation

Conversely, lack of sleep weakens immune system defenses, making donors more vulnerable to postdonation complications The implications extend beyond the individual a community with a robust, readily available blood supply, supported by well-rested donors, is inherently more resilient

By prioritizing sleep, Grade 12 students studying DRRR are not only ensuring their own well-being but also strengthening their community’s ability to respond to disasters They become vital links in the chain of preparedness, ensuring a sufficient and safe blood supply

precisely when and where it is most needed This proactive approach is a cornerstone of effective DRRR

While the concept of prioritizing sleep may appear simple, its impact on blood donation programs especially during emergencies is profound Sleeping well before donating is not merely a recommendation; it is a crucial element in ensuring the safety and well-being of both the donor and the recipient

For individual donors, adequate rest minimizes the risk of adverse reactions and maximizes blood quality

On a broader scale, a community that prioritizes rest before donating blood is better equipped to respond effectively to crises

"Sleep well to donate well" is not just a personal responsibility it is a vital contribution to community resilience

In outdoor sports such as volleyball, athletics, and lawn tennis, some athletes weaken easily when exposed to the sun These types of games demand endurance and resilience, regardless of weather conditions Without proper stamina and preparation, victory becomes an uphill battle

A recent survey revealed that 81% of students, or 133 out of 649 across the curriculum groups, are engrossed in playing Mobile Legends (ML) This game’s popularity is undeniable, with millions of players worldwide engaging in it daily Mobile Legends wields significant influence over today’s youth While it has negative aspects, it also offers notable benefits, such as enhancing decision-making, teamwork, and strategic thinking

Additionally, it provides a platform for social interaction and building new relationships

However, the rise of Mobile Legends has drawn more students away from traditional sports Unlike physical activities, Mobile Legends does not require physical effort, exposure to the sun, or vigorous movement Success in the game depends primarily on strategy, making it a more appealing option for many Consequently, traditional sports are often overshadowed by this popular mobile game

To address this, it is essential to strike a balance Recognizing both the positive and negative impacts of Mobile Legends is crucial to maximizing its benefits while minimizing its drawbacks Fostering sportsmanship, respect, and responsibility among players can encourage a healthier, more productive approach to personal development With proper guidance, students can find value not only in virtual victories but also in the growth and discipline that traditional sports can provide
