Just like all of Finland, Helsinki awakens as the first rays of sun find their way through the clouds after a long, cold winter. Helsinki offers an amazing selection of restaurants and bars, where you can celebrate summer. However, we find that the best (and the most affordable) way to do that is to blend in with the locals: grab your friends, good food and some beverages and hit the park for a relaxed picnic! Great weather, check. Good company, check. But where to set up the picnic, and moreover, what to eat or drink? Fear not – we at Lidl are here to guide you all the way. Finnair City Bus Finnair City Bus operates between Helsinki Airport (Terminal 1 platform 11, Terminal 2 platform 10) and the Central Railway Station (Elielinaukio, platform 30) every 20 minutes. A single ticket costs €6.70 (cash and credit cards accepted). Buses Helsinki Region Transport operates buses throughout the region. Long-distance buses: www.matkahuolto.fi Taxis A taxi between the airport and the city centre costs around €40. Metro The metro line stretches from Ruoholahti to Vuosaari via the city centre. The travel time from end to end is 23 minutes. The west metro is scheduled to open in 2017, stretching the line all the way to Kivenlahti in Espoo. The travel time from end to end will then be around 40 minutes. Suomenlinna ferry The municipal ferry operates between the Market Square and the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress all year round. The Suomenlinna ticket is valid for 12 hours and costs €5.

Trains The Ring Rail Line not only connects long distance trains to the airport, it also allows for quick and easy access from the airport to the city centre. By taking either the I or P train you can reach the city centre in just half an hour. A single ticket costs €5.50

Their goal – to take care of everyone visiting Helsinki. The summer is here and so are the travelers. But is Helsinki’s jolly and famous green team up for the challenge?

on’t be fooled by its relatively small size. From its classic urban architecture and the ever-present nature to one of the coolest food scenes in the world, Helsinki packs in a bunch. Thank heavens the visitors can, once again, rely on the jolly and green team of Helsinki Help patrolling the capital’s sunny streets. Anyone can install maps around the city or design websites for people study. And they sure have their place! What makes Helsinki Help unique and human, however, is the gang’s sincere and open attitude toward visitors of all age, style and background. – Many of our guides are relatively young. For us, it’s important to keep the atmosphere open and fun. Both on the city streets as well as at our office, explains Tourist Information Expert Pinja Maunula who has worked with the green troopers for several years. – We also try to keep the rotation with our twenty-something guides quick over here. This way no one gets bored. This means all Help guides should patrol in each of the city’s designated areas at least once during the summer season, Maunula explains. – All in all, the feedback from visitors and the staff has been super positive!

FROM ISLAND HOPPING TO SNACK SPOTTING Fueled with a happy philosophy like that, it’s relieving to leave the task of guiding Helsinki’s growing number of visitors for these guys. But enough with the flattering – where do the Helpers guide the visitors? What is particularly hot? Besides the pleasantly warm June, that is. The word on the street is that Helsinki summers are becoming more and more about the sea. The mainland with its amazingly long coastline is beautiful, sure. But you’d be silly not to check it out from the waterfront too and, most importantly, admiring it from its beautiful islands. And indeed, consisting of around 330 pieces, the Helsinki archipelago is easier to reach than ever before. True to the city’s strategy of kindly nudging people to hit the boats and get to the beaches, Maunula joins the crowd. – The city has started opening up islands for the public on a quickened pace. The ferry connections with their short travel times are also very easy to reach. Relaxing on the islands is definitely my personal favorite thing about summer in Helsinki, says Maunula dreaming. One example of opening up the islands for the people is the cute Vallisaari – literally Wall

Island. A place that was closed from the public until 2016. Just a bit further chills Isosaari – Big Island. And yes, it’s one of the biggest around. The schedules of the privately-operated ferries can be easily checked at Helsinki’s official Journey Planner or, as they call it in Finnish, Reittiopas at www.reittiopas.fi/en. (Just note that the boat tickets need to be purchased separately upon departure.) The Helsinki archipelago forms an ideal setting for those summer day picnics, swimming, visiting one of the many restaurants amidst remarkable surroundings or, simply, kicking it and relaxing in the pristine nature. – For me Helsinki in the summer really is about the sea. And nature. Oh, and food too! Maunula lists. – I wouldn’t brand myself as a culinarist per

Why order a main course when small portions from the SÖDER menu bring together the best of modern Nordic cuisine?

estaurant founder, Lotten Lindborg-Suhonen, often found herself ordering several appetisers while eating out, skipping the main course completely. She also found that she was not alone in doing this. A main course is often too filling and flavours can be a bit one dimensional. Lotten had more fun ordering three different starters to taste the different flavours. This discovery was the inspiration for SÖDER. SÖDER Chef Oliver Lauronen’s culinary philosophy is based on tasty variations of Scandinavian cuisine. – We use a lot of local ingredients and emphasise their amazing flavours. So at SÖDER you can tuck into Finnish tastes with a modern twist.

espite its strange location in Humalistonkatu, Daddy Greens Pizzabar has pulled the crowd in Töölö in a steady stream already for 1.5 years. The reputation has spread, as Daddy Greens has, in many surveys, been ranked as one of the best pizza restaurants in Helsinki.

Rivoli Restaurant returns to its French roots Ragni Rissanen, who founded Rivoli in the 1960s, was in equal parts enthusiastic and horrified when she heard about her grandchildren Jesse and Jenni Jokilahti’s plans to redesign the entire menu.

n 1962, café owner Ragni Rissanen noted that there was a hole of the size of a French fish restaurant in the Helsinki restaurant scene. The restaurant that opened in Kamppi was called Rivoli, after the street rue de Rivoli in the center of Paris. – Frenchness has from the beginning been a strong part of the idea, but little by little a lot of other elements were added to the menu as souvenirs from the world, says Rissanen's grandchild, restaurateur Jesse Jokilahti. Last August, Rivoli's new owners, siblings Jesse and Jenni Jokilahti, came to the conclusion that the old menu from their grandmother's days ought to be modernized. – We wanted to return to our roots. There was no substantially French restaurant in Helsinki, so there was a need for one. In addition, our staff have been learning about and creating French cuisine since the 1960s, and most importantly, we all love the food ourselves. The menu, which was jointly planned by the head chef and Jesse Jokilahti, has been enthusiastically received by customers. Ragni Rissanen is also no longer horrified by the younger generation's winds of change. – In addition to my practical experience, I have also learned from my grandmother to be willing to try out something new, says Jesse, laughing.

ROSY CHARM AND KISSES ON THE CHEEK On the new menu, fish does not play the main role anymore, even if it can be found on the menu, for instance in the form of the rare common sole. The main emphasis in the menu is on Frenchness - the major part of the more special ingredients are imported directly from their homeland. One of these specialties is Bresse chicken (Poulet de Bresse). – The chickens that are raised in the region of Bresse are recognized as among of the best in the world, and among the happiest in the world. The breeders are very carefully selected, since the production covers only around 0.1% of all French chicken production. Bresse chicken are listed under large servings on the menu, not under main courses. In the revamped menu, there is no longer any strict division between starters and main courses. Only the portion sizes are different. – We wish to promote the experience of dining together. A dinner party can choose the tasting menu, comprising several small portions, or share large portions between themselves. Rivoli has also wanted to put effort into the flair of their portions in a modern way, since according to Jesse, the look of a dish is half of the experience. This flea market takes place each Sunday in the Dallapénpuisto park along Aleksis Kiven katu. Everyone is welcome to come and sell their stuff free of charge, as long as you clean up after yourself. The flea market keeps growing in popularity and is now the biggest weekly flea market in Helsinki in summertime. It also has a number of food stalls, so you can also go there for lunch. On rainy days the flea market can be quite slow, but if the sun is shining, the entire park can be filled with stalls. There is no exact starting time, so you can even show up in the afternoon with your wares – perfect for those who like to sleep in! This event is ideal not only for shopping, but also for just hanging out in the park and enjoying life!

LAPINLAHTI PARK FLEA MARKET Lapinlahti, one of the finest milieus in Helsinki, is transformed into a flea market once a month on Saturdays. In the shade of the trees and by the shore of this former hospital complex, it is hard to believe that you are in the centre of town. Everyone is welcome to sell their own wares, just bring your own blanket or a table. You are not permitted to sell food at this flea market, but if you get hungry you can grab lunch at the adjacent waste food restaurant Loop. HIETSU FLEA MARKET The Hietsu Flea Market in Hietalahti is the most traditional flea market in town and the only one run by the City of Helsinki. This flea market attracts many professional vendors alongside anyone else who wants to rent space. What makes the Hietsu Flea Market different from all others is that it is open throughout the week, although weekends are generally the busiest. Even with all the competition from “unofficial” flea markets, Hietsu remains extremely popular – so you’ll have to book your space early if you have something to sell. HAKANIEMI FLEA MARKET The other “official” flea market in Helsinki takes place at Hakaniemi Market three Sundays a month from May to the end of August. TÖÖLÖNLAHTI BAY The park around the Töölö Bay begins in the heart of Helsinki and there's a popular walking path circling the bay. The Winter Garden, boasting hundreds of plants, is located at the north end of the bay. Wooden villas along the shores are a reminder of Helsinki's history. The Töölö Bay is a treasure especially for bird watchers. Töölönlahti park is a new oasis for culture and city events that has been developed along the southern shoreline.

KAIVOPUISTO PARK Helsinki's oldest and best known park is surrounded by embassies and villas. The nearby sea, rock cliffs and green lawns offer many opportunities to relax and enjoy the outdoors. During winter, if the snow situation permits, the park is popular for sledding. At the highest point of the park is the Ursa Observatory. There are also several cafées and restaurants along the shore and on the islands.

Kaisaniemi Park is the oldest park for public use in Helsinki founded in 1812. It was named after Catharina (Kajsa) Wahllund (1772-1843) who had a restaurant in the park. Situated alongside the Central Railway Station, Kaisaniemi Park is a great place for recreation and hosts festivals and outdoor concerts, especially in summertime. Next to the park is the University Botanical Garden.

KAISANIEMI BOTANIC GARDEN The Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden is one of Helsinki's most popular visitor attractions. The garden is situated very close to the city centre, and its glasshouses and surrounding grounds offer nature lovers a unique experience all year round. The glasshouses of the Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden bring a tropical breeze into the routines of the week. The lush Rainforest House presents the coffee bush and the strangler fig, and in the Palm House, the visitor can see not only the world's biggest seed, but also an impressive collection of orchids. The outdoor garden attracts the visitor to experience the world of plants. In summertime, perhaps the most attractive part of the grounds is the central garden, an open area with ponds and flowers, bordered by the glasshouses and rose bushes. There are also events with different themes organized at the Kaisaniemi botanical garden.

The Winter Garden, founded in 1893, has been a recreational meeting place for the residents of Helsinki for over a century. No matter what season it is, the elaborate oasis of exotic plants invites you to take a tour of the greenery. In addition to the plants, the splashing barbels in the pools delight visitors. In summertime and even in autumn, a passer-by can admire the marvellous Rose Garden in front of the Winter Garden. During Christmas time, until Epiphany, the Winter Garden is decorated with traditional Christmas flowers such as azaleas, amaryllises, hyacinths etc., and the over a hundred-yearsold camellia trees flower. Santa's elfs are also peeking on visitors from behind the plants and flowers. During Easter is the time of daffodils and tulips.

Annala Garden is an idyllic park area in Vanhakaupunki area which is open to public. Hyötykasviyhdistys (" association of useful plants") organizes garden related events and courses at the yellow wooden house (building J). The different themed garden areas present eg. useful plants, herbs, plants used for coloring etc. At the area also a villa from the 1830's and a historic orangery.

HAAGAN ALPPIRUUSUPUISTO RHODODENDRON PARK IN HAAGA

Rhododendron Park in Haaga is a true gem that deserves to be seen by all visitors to Helsinki when the plants are in bloom. The grounds serve as both a public park and a university research garden. The park has two parts: the evergreen rhododendrons grow in the southern section, while the seasonal park azaleas grow on the other side of the power lines in the northern section. The peak blooming season for both the rhododendrons and the azaleas is early June. The azaleas bloom first and sometimes longer than the rhododendrons, even after midsummer. The splendour of the flowers varies with each year; generally a good year is followed by a more modest one. Pine trees create a canopy for the flowering plants. Thousands of Helsinki residents and gardening enthusiasts visit the park each year to witness the spectacle.

The Old Church Park is one of the most popular green areas in the city centre. It is also known as the "Plague Park" (Ruttopuisto), as victims of the plague in 1710 were buried alongside the church. The gravestones in the Old Church Park remind of the history of cemeteries in this part of town. The cemeteries in Kamppi made gradually way for the growing city. Today the Old Church Park is as popular as all the other parks in the city centre. Small scale events are also organized in the park. The Old Church (Vanhakirkko) in the park is the second oldest church in Helsinki.

KUMPULA BOTANIC GARDEN Kumpula Botanic Garden situates on a historical lands of Kumpula mansion. The Kumpula Garden collection comprises two parts: garden of cultivated plants and geobotanical garden. The garden of cultivated plants includes both economic and ornamental species. There are separate sections for fruit and berry plants, other edible plants, and medicinal plants. The design of the geobotanical garden largely resembles an English landscape garden. The plants have been grouped according to their areas of origin into the following sections: Europe incl. Finland, eastern North America, western North America, the continental Far East and Japan.

ROIHUVUORI CHERRY PARK - KIRSIKKAPUISTO Kirsikkapuisto (Cherry Park, Sakura Park) opened in 2007 is part of the Roihuvuori green area. There are 152 pink blossomed cherry trees in the park that were planted following sponsorship from the Japanese community in Helsinki. In spring the Japanese Hanami festival is celebrated here when the trees are in bloom. Fun modes of transportation for exploring Helsinki You can explore Helsinki on foot or by private or public transportation, but there are also many other inspiring modes of transportation that are equally convenient. Helsinki’s popular city bike system works like a dream, and this spring rentable electric scooters and city rowing boats have also made a splash. The best way to discover Helsinki’s maritime appeal, meanwhile, is with an archipelago cruise or even with a hot air balloon ride.

Sightseeing buses Sightseeing buses are a great way to see the main sights, especially if you are on a tight schedule. Most tours offer audio guides in numerous languages, and in summertime you can combine a sightseeing bus ride with an archipelago cruise, so you get to see the best of Helsinki from land and sea. Hop on hop off sightseeing bus tours allow you to set your own schedule by getting off at any stop and catching the next bus as many times as you like during the validity period of your ticket. Most of these tours are offered from May to September, while Helsinki Panorama Sightseeing operates all year round.

Electric scooters Rentable electric scooters landed on the streets of Helsinki this spring. Three private companies currently offer these convenient devices in Helsinki: Sweden’s VOI, Germany’s TIER and Finland’s Hoop.

Archipelago cruises The maritime appeal of Helsinki is best experienced aboard an archipelago cruise. Along with the stunning views, you can also enjoy a tasty brunch, lunch or dinner. Most archipelago cruises depart from the Market Square and operate only in summertime (May-September). The main cruise operators include Royal Line, Strömma, Jt-Line and Fregatti – and don’t forget the Suomenlinna ferry.

Hot air balloons Throughout the summer season you can also admire Helsinki and the entire metropolitan area from the air with a morning or evening hot air balloon ride! Daytime rides are not possible due to the rising air currents. You should book your hot air balloon ride well in advance, and all rides are weather permitting – i.e., services may be interrupted due to strong winds, poor visibility, rain or thunderstorms. Hot air balloon rides are offered in Helsinki by Linnanpallo and Raffica Oy.

City bikes City bikes are a popular way to get around Helsinki in summertime. Locals and visitors alike have 3450 yellow city bikes at their disposal in summer 2019 in both Helsinki and neighbouring Helsinki. There are 238 bike stations south of the Kehä I ring road in Helsinki, the easternmost bike station being in Vartioharju. There are an additional 107 bike stations in Espoo, mostly in southeastern Espoo and Leppävaara. Read more here.

Electric scooters differ from city bikes in that they don’t have their own stations, so you can leave them in practice wherever you like once you get to your destination. You are supposed to leave them next to a bike rack or leaning up against a building, so that it’s easy for the next user to jump on it. Electric scooters should be driven along bike lanes – not on sidewalks – and the same traffic rules apply as for cyclists. Helmets are recommended. Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) is also piloting a service providing both traditional and electric scooters in Vuosaari. There are 28 scooter stations with around 300 scooters in the neighbourhood. The pilot project will continue until October.

City rowing boats In Helsinki you can also take to the water without having to own your own boat, thanks to Skipperi’s city rowing boat service that was introduced at the end of May. Initially, boats will be available at two locations: at Café Torpanranta in Munkkiniemi on the Laajalahti bay and at Café Veranda next to Finlandia Hall on the Töölönlahti bay.
