Navigating Hormonal Harmony Through Seasonal Shifts By Riley George As the leaves turn or the first buds of spring emerge, most of us attribute our shifting moods to the simple beauty or gloom of the scenery. However, beneath the surface, our bodies are undergoing a complex chemical recalibration that rivals the complexity of the changing landscape. Transitions between seasons, particularly the shifts in light exposure and temperature, act as a biological reset button for our endocrine system. This internal machinery governs everything from the clarity of our morning thoughts to the depth of our midnight slumber. Understanding these transitions is the first step toward maintaining steady energy and a resilient mood year-round, moving beyond the idea that we are merely "weather-sensitive."

Light-Dark Connection: Melatonin and Cortisol The most significant driver of hormonal change during seasonal transitions is the photoperiod, or the duration of daylight. Our circadian rhythm, the internal clock that dictates our sleep-wake cycle, relies on light signals to regulate the production of melatonin and cortisol. During the transition into winter, the shortened days can cause the pineal gland to begin producing melatonin earlier in the evening and continue later into the morning. This often results in what researchers call winter hypersomnia, in which the body feels a persistent, heavy grogginess despite a full night's sleep. In contrast, the surge of light during the summer transition can suppress melatonin production to a degree that interferes with restorative rest. According to research summarized by the Sleep Foundation, these disruptions are a primary trigger

for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).¹ The body struggles to sync its internal clock with the external environment, leading to a state of "social jetlag" where our biological timing is permanently at odds with the sun.

The Vitamin D "Hormone" and Mood Regulation Though commonly labeled a vitamin, vitamin D functions more like a pro-hormone with receptors located throughout the brain and body. It is a critical component in the synthesis of serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for mood stability and feelings of well-being. As we transition into autumn and winter, the angle of the sun changes, and UV exposure drops significantly, particularly in northern latitudes. A summary of studies from the Mayo Clinic indicates that lower vitamin D levels can lead to a significant dip in serotonin.² This chemical drought often manifests as irritability, intense carbohydrate cravings, and a lack of motivation. When you feel your mood plummeting in October, it is often a lag in your body’s ability to convert sunlight rather than a personal failing or a lack of willpower.

Thyroid and Metabolism: Adapting to the Cold Our thyroid gland is essentially the body's thermostat, responsible for regulating metabolic rate and heat production. As seasons shift toward colder temperatures, the thyroid must increase its production of T3 and T4 to stimulate thermogenesis. This metabolic ramp-up requires more fuel and micronutrients, which explains why many people experience a natural uptick in appetite during the transition to winter. According to Endocrine Web, supporting the thyroid through these shifts requires a delicate balance of iodine, selenium, and iron.³ If the thyroid cannot meet the increased demand for heat production, the result is often profound cold intolerance, brittle hair, and a sense of "brain fog" that persists regardless of caffeine intake.

Strategic Adaptation for Energy and Sleep To support hormonal health during these shifts, one must adopt a proactive approach to light management and nutrition. Within the first 30 minutes of waking, seeking out natural light is essential because it triggers an early cortisol spike. This "wake-up" hormone simultaneously sets the timer for melatonin production fourteen hours later. As evening light lingers in the summer months, using amber-tinted glasses or dimming indoor lights can signal to the brain that the day is ending. Nutritional support also plays a role; shifting toward complex carbohydrates like oats and sweet potatoes can help transport tryptophan to the brain, aiding serotonin production. Furthermore, magnesium serves as a vital tool for regulating the nervous system during hectic seasonal changes, as noted by Healthline, which cites its ability to improve sleep quality by regulating neurotransmitters and calming the adrenal glands.⁴

The Body as a Rhythmic System Ultimately, our hormones are not static measurements but a rhythmic response to the world around us. By acknowledging that your energy levels and sleep patterns are tied to the earth’s cycles, you can move away from fighting your biology and toward supporting it. Whether it is adjusting your bedroom temperature to facilitate the core cooling necessary for deep sleep or increasing your intake of healthy fats to support hormone synthesis in the winter, small shifts can mitigate the stress of seasonal transitions. Our bodies are designed to adapt, but in a world of artificial light and climate control, we must be intentional about providing the signals our endocrine system needs to stay in balance.

Seasonal Strategy Guide: Key Takeaways To make these hormonal transitions more manageable, here is a breakdown of the essential facts and actionable steps you can take: • Prioritize Morning Sunlight: Aim for 10–30 minutes of natural light shortly after waking to anchor your circadian rhythm and trigger essential cortisol release. • Monitor Vitamin D Levels: Since vitamin D acts as a precursor to serotonin, consider testing your levels during the autumn transition and supplementing if necessary to prevent the "serotonin dip." • Adjust Nutritional Fuel: Support your thyroid’s increased winter workload by consuming foods rich in selenium (such as Brazil nuts) and iodine (such as seaweed or iodized salt). • Manage Evening Blue Light: Use blue-light-blocking technology or dim your environment two hours before bed to protect melatonin production, especially during long summer days. • Cool Your Sleep Environment: Recognize that your body must drop its core temperature to sleep; use fans or specialized bedding to counteract summer heat that might spike cortisol at night. • Lean into Magnesium: Incorporate magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens and seeds, or consider a supplement to help stabilize the nervous system during high-stress seasonal shifts.

Working with the Seasons, Not Against Them As the world outside transforms, it is only natural that we feel a corresponding shift within ourselves. We are not meant to operate at the exact same frequency in the depths of January as we do in the peak of July. By viewing our energy, sleep, and mood through the lens of hormonal biology, we can replace frustration with a sense of informed adaptation. Whether it is by seeking out that vital morning light to anchor our circadian

rhythm or adjusting our nutrition to support a hardworking thyroid, these small, intentional acts of self-care bridge the gap between our modern lifestyles and our ancestral biology. Ultimately, seasonal transitions are an invitation to tune in and listen to what our bodies need most. When we honor these natural cycles rather than fighting them, we don't just survive the changing seasons; we learn to thrive alongside them.

EVERYDAY

SPICES

THAT CAN TRANSFORM YOUR HEALTH

18

BY EVELYN FLAHARTY

W

hen it comes to staying healthy, we often think about eating more vegetables, drinking water, or taking supplements. But what if one of the most powerful health upgrades is already sitting in your kitchen cabinet? Spices don’t just make food taste better. They can also play a significant role in how your body feels, heals, and functions every day. Five standout spices that I include daily in my diet are cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, garlic, and oregano. Of course, many other spices offer health benefits, but these five are my daily, non-negotiable, goto spices. These common ingredients have been used for centuries in traditional cooking and natural medicine, and for good reason. They support immunity, reduce inflammation, aid digestion, and protect the body from damage caused by stress, pollution, and aging. The best part? They’re inexpensive, easy to use, and incredibly effective when used consistently. You don’t need to be a gourmet chef to take advantage of their benefits, which is a good thing for me. Whether your goal is muscle growth, faster recovery, or general wellness, incorporating these spices into your daily meals can give you a natural edge. Let’s take a closer look at what makes each of these spices so powerful.

Top Doctor Magazine / Special Issue - Vialyx / 19

CINNAMON

Cinnamon is a familiar favorite for many people. Whether it’s added to baked goods or stirred into coffee, cinnamon adds a cozy flavor that feels like a warm hug. But beyond its taste, cinnamon also offers several important health benefits. One of the most notable is its ability to help regulate blood sugar levels. This is especially useful for people who experience energy crashes, sugar cravings, or mood swings throughout the day. Cinnamon contains natural compounds that help the body use insulin more effectively, which can lead to more balanced energy levels and less strain on the body over time. As a professional bodybuilder, blood sugar control is key when aiming to build lean muscle and reduce fat. Stable insulin levels can help limit fat storage and encourage better nutrient partitioning, meaning your body directs nutrients toward muscle growth rather than fat accumulation. This is why I add cinnamon to my oatmeal, yogurt, protein shakes, and sweet potatoes. Cinnamon is also rich in antioxidants, which help fight damage from free radicals—unstable molecules that contribute to aging and many chronic illnesses. Some research even suggests that cinnamon may support heart health by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.

TURMERIC

If you’ve ever had curry or golden milk, you’ve tasted turmeric. It’s known for its bright golden yellow color and has long been used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. This spice is just as valuable in your wellness routine as it is in your spice blend. The secret behind turmeric’s health power is curcumin, a compound known for its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Inflammation is your body’s way of dealing with injury or stress. However, when it becomes chronic (meaning it sticks around too long), it can contribute to joint pain, fatigue, and chronic diseases like arthritis or heart issues.

Curcumin helps calm this inflammation and protect your cells from damage. Why does this matter to me as a bodybuilder? Intense workouts cause tiny tears in muscle fibers, leading to inflammation during the repair process. While this is a natural part of muscle growth, too much inflammation can slow down recovery and contribute to chronic joint pain or overtraining symptoms. Curcumin helps reduce excessive inflammation, allowing for faster recovery, less soreness, and improved joint function. One thing to know is that the body doesn’t easily absorb turmeric on its own. That’s why it’s often paired with black pepper. Not sure how to incorporate turmeric into your diet? I like to add turmeric to my eggs, rice, vegetables, and detox smoothies. You can also make golden milk with turmeric, milk (or a plant-based alternative), cinnamon, ginger, and honey.

20

GINGER

Ginger is one of the most versatile and widely used spices in the world. Its bold, slightly spicy flavor can brighten up both sweet and savory dishes. But its benefits go far beyond flavor. Ginger is best known for its ability to ease nausea and support digestion. Whether you’re dealing with motion sickness, morning sickness, or an upset stomach, ginger can help calm things down. It promotes the production of digestive enzymes and helps food move through the digestive tract more smoothly. Ginger also supports the digestive process, which is often overlooked in bodybuilding nutrition. Proper digestion is essential to absorbing the nutrients from high-protein and high-calorie meals. If your digestive system isn’t functioning optimally, you may not be getting the full benefit of your nutrition plan. Ginger stimulates digestive enzymes, reduces bloating, and helps your body better process large meals.

GARLIC: NATURE’S IMMUNE BOOSTER

But ginger’s value goes well beyond digestive aid. For athletes, it offers several key advantages: reduced inflammation, lower muscle pain, and enhanced digestion and nutrient absorption. Like turmeric, ginger contains bioactive compounds (such as gingerol) that reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. This makes it incredibly effective for reducing joint pain, easing postworkout soreness, and promoting faster muscle repair. All music to my ears, especially when training legs.

The key compound in garlic is allicin, which is released when garlic is chopped, crushed, or chewed. Allicin has strong antimicrobial properties, helping the body fight off bacteria, viruses, and even fungi. That’s why garlic is often recommended as a natural remedy for colds, coughs, and minor infections.

I use ginger the same way I use turmeric; both go into my detox smoothies. Looking for more ideas? Try adding fresh grated ginger to stir-fries and marinades. You can also make ginger tea by steeping fresh slices in hot water with lemon and honey, or sprinkle powdered ginger into oatmeal and baked goods.

Garlic is one of the oldest natural remedies on record, and it still holds up today. While it’s a flavor favorite in cuisines all over the world, garlic’s real strength lies in its powerful immune-boosting and heart-supporting properties.

From a cardiovascular perspective, garlic has been shown to reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol profiles. For athletes and bodybuilders such as myself, healthy circulation means better oxygen delivery to muscles, improved endurance, and faster recovery. Some studies even suggest that garlic supplementation can increase peak exercise capacity and reduce fatigue. Garlic is also rich in antioxidants, protecting cells from damage and supporting the detoxification processes that help your body bounce back from intense training. It may even support detoxification by helping the liver process and eliminate toxins more effectively. My favorite way to enjoy my vegetables is to sauté them in garlic and olive oil. The aroma of the garlic roasting in the olive oil – delightful. For maximum benefit, let chopped garlic sit for 5–10 minutes before cooking—it allows the allicin to activate fully.

OREGANO

Oregano is more than just a topping for pizza or a garnish on pasta. It’s a potent antioxidant and antimicrobial herb that can help the body fight off infections, support gut health, and enhance recovery. It contains carvacrol and thymol, two natural substances with strong antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects. These compounds make oregano an excellent supporter of immune health. During cold and flu season, oregano can help your body defend itself naturally. It may also support gut health by fighting off harmful bacteria and promoting a healthy balance of microbes in your digestive system. Oregano is also high in antioxidants, which help protect your body from cell damage and inflammation. While fresh oregano is great, dried oregano is even more concentrated and easier to keep on hand. For athletes, especially those in heavy training phases or during travel and competition seasons, oregano can act as a natural defense system. It may also help balance the gut microbiome—a critical factor in overall health, nutrient absorption, and even mood regulation. A healthy gut means better digestion, less inflammation, and a stronger immune response. Considering the physical demands placed on the body by intense training, maintaining immune health is non-negotiable. The less time you spend sick or rundown, the more consistent and productive your training will be. Oregano also acts as a natural preservative in foods, which is why it’s often used in meal prep and storage-friendly recipes. Sprinkle dried oregano on roasted vegetables, pasta, chicken, or soups. Fresh oregano can be chopped and added to salads or infused into oils for dressings.

HOW THESE SPICES SUPPORT WHOLE-BODY WELLNESS

One of the best things about these spices is how they complement one another—both in flavor and function. They each support different parts of the body, but many of their benefits overlap, creating a stronger effect when used together. For example: • Cinnamon and ginger can balance blood sugar and improve digestion, making them perfect for stabilizing energy throughout the day. • Turmeric and black pepper reduce inflammation and support joint health. • Garlic and oregano provide a powerful immune-boosting combo. • Ginger and turmeric soothe the stomach and help ease aches and pains. Now you understand why, as an athlete, these are my favorite spices. And you don’t need to use large amounts. Plus, they are perfect to mix together. Even small, consistent doses added to daily meals can gradually support your health and help prevent many common ailments.

SIMPLE WAYS TO USE THESE SPICES EVERY DAY Incorporating these spices into your routine doesn’t require a complete kitchen makeover. It’s easy to start with what you’re already eating and find creative ways to add extra flavor and nutrition. I’ve shared with you some of the ways I incorporate these spices into my daily diet. Here are a few more ideas: • Breakfast: Add cinnamon and/or ginger to oatmeal, pancakes, smoothies, or tea. • Lunch: Use turmeric and black pepper in soups, rice bowls, or roasted vegetables. • Dinner: Cook with garlic and oregano in pasta dishes, grilled chicken, or stir-fries. • Snacks: Sip ginger tea or turmeric golden milk in the afternoon or evening. • Meal Prep: Season large batches of food with these spices to add flavor and long-lasting health benefits. You don’t need to change your whole menu—just enhance what you’re already making with smart, flavorful additions.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR EVERYONE

In today’s world, we’re all juggling busy lives, trying to stay healthy, and often feeling like we don’t have time to think about nutrition in detail. That’s what makes these five spices so helpful—they’re a simple, natural, and affordable way to support your health, no matter your age or lifestyle. They don’t require a prescription. They don’t come with a long list of side effects. They don’t even cost much. Yet they offer real, research-backed benefits for your immune system, your digestion, your heart, your joints, and your energy. And perhaps just as important, they make your meals more delicious, which makes eating healthy feel less like a chore and more like a joy.

FINAL THOUGHTS: SMALL ADDITIONS, BIG IMPACT

Cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, garlic, and oregano may seem like small additions to your meals, but their impact on your health can be surprisingly significant. These spices have stood the test of time in kitchens around the world, and for good reason. They help your body fight inflammation, stay energized, digest food more easily, and defend against illness. Best of all, they’re easy to use and enjoy. So, the next time you’re reaching for seasonings, remember: you’re not just adding flavor—you’re adding powerful support for your well-being. Spice by spice, meal by meal, you’re building a foundation for a healthier, more vibrant life.

Protecting What Patients Take Home: How VIALYX Is Rethinking Temperature-Sensitive Medication Storage Written by: Riley George

The Missing Link Between the Clinic and the Home Modern medicine is becoming increasingly personal. Across the United States, patients are managing more temperature-sensitive therapies outside traditional clinical environments, from insulin and other injectable medications to physician-directed wellness and hormone protocols. Clinics and pharmacies operate around clearly defined storage procedures. Temperature-sensitive products are

handled according to manufacturer requirements, organized carefully, and protected throughout the clinical workflow. Then the patient goes home. And in many cases, that carefully managed product ends up on a shelf in the family refrigerator, next to groceries, drinks, leftovers, and everything else competing for space. For VIALYX founders, Casper Lino, Ace Blond, and Christian Mineur, that disconnect presented an obvious question: Why should dedicated storage end when the patient leaves the clinic? That question became VIALYX—a compact personal cooling system designed to give temperaturesensitive medications and wellness products a dedicated, organized space at home and on the move. “People can invest hundreds or thousands of dollars into their health and then barely think about where everything lives once they get home,” Lino explained.“We weren’t trying to reinvent medicine. We wanted to rethink the last few feet of the cold chain, the part that happens in everyday life.” The philosophy is simple: What patients put into their bodies deserves a place of its own.

28

From an E-Commerce Idea to a Healthcare Storage Brand VIALYX began with an observation rather than a lengthy business plan. The founding team brought experience spanning international e-commerce, product development, manufacturing, performance health, and digital marketing. Through their own exposure to the wellness market, they repeatedly encountered the same makeshift storage solutions: kitchen refrigerators, insulated lunch bags, hotel mini-fridges, and improvised travel containers. Sophisticated products were prescribed and purchased, but surprisingly few consumer products addressed what happened after those products left the clinic. “We came up with the concept one morning,” Ace recalled.“Within 24

hours, we had built the first commercial framework around it and started testing whether other people saw the same problem we did.” They did. Early demand from customers across Europe and the United Kingdom helped validate something larger than a single product: consumers wanted storage that felt as considered as the health routines they were investing in. VIALYX began evolving from a portable cooler into a broader concept the founders describe as personal cooling— dedicated temperature-controlled storage designed around the individual rather than the household.

Why Storage Deserves More Attention Temperature-sensitive healthcare products are not all the same, and VIALYX is careful not to suggest otherwise. Every medication should be stored according to its manufacturer’s instructions and the guidance of the prescribing healthcare professional. But the underlying principle of controlled storage is well established throughout healthcare. Clinics, pharmacies, hospitals, and laboratories use structured storage procedures for temperature-sensitive products because temperature management, monitoring, organization, and handling matter. The consumer environment is very different. A household refrigerator is primarily designed to serve an entire family and its food. Its doors may open dozens of times throughout the day. Products are moved

Top Doctor Magazine / Special Issue - Vialyx / 29

between shelves. Drinks, produce, sauces, meal containers, and medications may all occupy the same appliance. For many consumers, that works. For others, particularly those investing heavily in ongoing temperature-sensitive therapies, a dedicated space offers something the kitchen refrigerator was never designed around: their individual routine. “We’re not telling people their refrigerator suddenly destroys their medication,” Lino said.“We’re asking a different question: if healthcare professionals take storage seriously before a product reaches the patient, why shouldn’t the patient have access to a purpose-designed storage option once they get home?”

Bringing Clinical Logic Into Everyday Life VIALYX translates that idea into a compact system designed around three priorities: dedicated storage, controlled cooling, and portability. Rather than searching through a household refrigerator, users can keep compatible temperature-sensitive products organized in one designated location. The original VIALYX CryoCase is designed for compact everyday use and travel, accommodating approximately 8 to 12 standard vials and 1 to 3 pens depending on their dimensions and configuration.

30

For users with larger routines, VIALYX has developed expanded-capacity configurations designed for more stationary home or professional environments. The result is less like a conventional medical appliance and more like a premium piece of personal hardware. That distinction was intentional. “We wanted something people would actually want in their homes,” Ace explained.“Clean, compact, simple to use, and aesthetically considered. Medical storage doesn’t have to look industrial.”

Built to Move With the Patient The second problem VIALYX wanted to address appears the moment someone leaves home. A weekend away. A road trip. A long day at the office. A hotel room. International travel.

For people managing temperature-sensitive products, those otherwise ordinary situations can introduce another layer of planning. VIALYX was designed with portability in mind, combining active cooling with an integrated rechargeable battery system that allows compatible products to remain in a dedicated cooling environment away from a wall outlet for limited periods, depending on operating conditions. It can also integrate into common travel routines through compatible external power sources. The objective is straightforward: The storage routine should be able to travel with the patient. Users should always follow the storage requirements supplied with their specific medication and check applicable airline and security requirements before traveling with medications or cooling equipment.

A New Opportunity for Clinics For VIALYX, however, direct-toconsumer sales represent only part of the opportunity. The company’s next phase is focused heavily on physicians, pharmacies, longevity practices, hormone clinics, medical wellness providers, and other healthcare businesses. Instead of patients leaving the clinic with their medication and having to figure out

storage on their own, the provider can introduce a dedicated storage option at the same point in the patient journey. The patient leaves with the therapy and a system to organize and cool it at home or during travel. For clinics, this potentially creates an additional retail touchpoint while simultaneously improving the overall patient experience. “We’ve seen a very different reaction when the product is physically shown in a professional setting,” Lino said.“The provider can explain the therapy, explain the storage requirements, and then show the patient a practical storage option. It completes the experience.” VIALYX is now developing its wholesale and clinical partnership network with this

Top Doctor Magazine / Special Issue - Vialyx / 31

model in mind. Rather than positioning the product as another piece of medical equipment behind the counter, the company sees it as something clinics can integrate naturally into onboarding, patient education, protocol packages, and retail offerings.

From Product to Platform Their ambition extends beyond the current CryoCase. VIALYX is building toward a broader ecosystem of personal storage and transport products for people managing temperature-sensitive health routines. The company sees an increasingly important space between professional cold-chain infrastructure and the ordinary household refrigerator, a space where portability, organization, industrial design, and temperature management converge. That is the category VIALYX intends to own. Not simply the “peptide cooler.” Not another mini-fridge. Personal cooling. As the company expands further into the United States, its founders believe clinical partnerships will play a defining role in that evolution.

“We want VIALYX to become the name people associate with personal temperature-controlled storage,” Lino stated.“Whether someone is at home, traveling, or leaving their clinic with a new therapy, we want there to be an obvious answer to the question: where am I going to keep this?” For clinics, that presents an equally straightforward opportunity. Don’t just send patients home with a protocol. Help them complete the setup.

Partner with VIALYX VIALYX is currently expanding its U.S. network of clinics, healthcare professionals, pharmacies, wellness providers, and distribution partners. Qualified partners can inquire about wholesale pricing, clinic display units, volume purchasing, and partnership opportunities. For clinics, that presents an equally straightforward opportunity. Don’t just send patients home with a protocol. Help them complete the setup.

BY SYDNEY GOOD

G

one are the days when everyone had to work a 9-5. Since 2020 especially, more and more people have been working from home and creating a schedule tailored to them. Come to find out, the 9-5 is best suited for men. Let’s explore why.

MEN VS. WOMEN’S CYCLES EVERYONE’S CYCLES

We all have daily cycles. That’s our circadian rhythm, which determines when we wake up and go to bed.¹ When you have a system or a routine, your body will naturally want to get up and sleep at the same time each day. If you think about it, we should all be suitable for a 9 to 5 workday, right? After all, we (in theory) are ready to conquer our day in the morning when we get up. Over the day, we progressively lose steam, and by the time 5 o’clock rolls around, we’re ready to be done. We have just enough time for dinner and downtime before bed. However, men and women do feel differently each day based on their hormones.

MEN’S CYCLES

In addition to a normal circadian rhythm, men also experience a diurnal rhythm of testosterone.² That means they experience the same thing every day with their hormones. When testosterone levels are normal, testosterone is at its highest in the morning and decreases over the day.³ As men sleep, testosterone rises, so it’s at its peak again the next day. In other words, they’re ready to seize the day in the morning and feel ready to clock out by the end of the day. And the same thing repeats every single day.

WOMEN’S CYCLES

Hypothetically, women should feel the same way based on their circadian rhythm. However, any woman knows she doesn’t feel the same each day, and it’s not just in her head. That’s because a woman’s cycle works on roughly a 28day pattern. A woman’s key hormones, progesterone and estrogen, dramatically shift over this time. The main events in a woman’s cycle are ovulation and menstruation, but the body’s hormones are still working in between these points.⁴ All that to say, a woman will feel energized and have more mental clarity to complete tasks at specific points during the month. But at other times, she’ll feel grateful if she just makes it out of bed.

STRESS AFFECTS WOMEN DIFFERENTLY THAN MEN Though stress is disadvantageous for both men and women, adding insult to injury, stress can hurt women more than men when it comes to fertility.⁵ When chronically stressed, our body enters a fight-or-flight mode, halting essential functions and causing gut imbalances. Stress causes our cortisol to spike, which, again, isn’t good for anyone's health overall. However, while men have cortisol, their testosterone doesn’t come from it. In other words, they won’t experience fertility problems from stress quite like women. Women, on the other hand, primarily use the hormones progesterone and cortisol to conceive children. Cortisol is not bad, but when stress causes it to swell, everything else is imbalanced, making it difficult for women to have children. That likely explains why 1 out of 5 women experience infertility during the time they should be most fertile. Even if a woman doesn’t intend to have children, she’ll still be hurt by high cortisol with depression, anxiety, and mood swings, among other things.

WHAT WOMEN CAN DO TRACK YOUR CYCLE

The good news is that women can track their cycles to understand what’s going on with their hormones. Even if they’re not planning to have kids right now, knowing what’s going on to prepare is helpful. This app called 28 is a great resource to track your cycle.⁶ If you don’t have a cycle, you can establish a monthly routine to help regulate it—which can help bring it back! The same app uses the moon as a monthly schedule if you so choose.

EAT AND EXERCISE WITH YOUR CYCLE

Once you know your cycle, you can eat and exercise along with it.⁷ As you might’ve guessed, there are times in the month when more intense exercise would be beneficial. At other points, though, it’s best to take a step back and relax. You can also eat foods that help balance your hormones. Getting in touch with your cycle can help regulate your hormones and make it easier to function.

MANAGE STRESS

You must do what you can to alleviate stress. If possible, take a step back from certain responsibilities in order to not overwhelm yourself. Don’t be hard on yourself when you’re at that time of the month. You can also trick your body into calming itself by activating the vagus nerve.⁸

CONCLUSION Though atypical job trends are rising, that doesn’t mean we can completely abandon the 9-5. But if women track their cycles, they can learn how to work with their hormones to make the most of every day.

By Evelyn Flaharty As we age, it’s normal to experience loss in muscle mass, strength, and flexibility. This process can begin as early as in your 30s and 40s. However, there are several things we can do to slow down this process and even build muscle as we age.

WHY IS IT ESSENTIAL TO MAINTAIN MUSCLE MASS? Maintaining muscle mass as we age is crucial for overall health, mobility, and independence. Muscle strength supports daily activities, such as walking, climbing stairs, and carrying groceries, which are essential for a good quality of life. It also helps protect against falls and injuries, which become more common with age due to decreased balance and bone density. As we age, we must consider how we want to live in our 70s, 80s, and even 90s. Personally, I want and plan to maintain my independence, which is why we all need to start as early as possible to take care of our health.

BONE DENSITY LOSS AS WE AGE Many people begin to experience bone loss after age 50. Bone density loss refers to a decrease in the mineral content of bones, called osteopenia. Osteopenia often develops silently, with no noticeable symptoms until a fracture occurs. Factors contributing to osteopenia include aging, a sedentary lifestyle, inadequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and certain medications or medical conditions. While it is not as severe as osteoporosis, osteopenia is a significant warning sign, highlighting the need to take proactive measures to improve bone health. Early detection through bone density tests can help manage osteopenia effectively and prevent its progression to osteoporosis. Therefore, this would be a good time to discuss getting a bone density baseline test with your healthcare provider. A bone density baseline test is a non-invasive procedure for assessing bone health. Establishing a baseline is particularly important for individuals at risk of osteoporosis, including postmenopausal women, older adults, and those with a family history of bone diseases. A bone density test is no different than establishing a baseline mammogram. The results provide a benchmark for future comparisons, enabling early detection of bone density loss and guiding preventive measures. A bone density test can help healthcare providers recommend interventions to maintain or improve bone strength and reduce the risk of fractures. Unfortunately, our health care system typically recommends you take your bone density baseline at 65. That’s 15 years after you begin to lose bone density. As a cancer survivor, I am a firm believer in advocating for my health. I had my baseline taken at 40 for my mammogram and 50 for my bone density. If something is not moving in the right direction, the sooner we know, the sooner we can take corrective action. Because of the possibility of early detection, it’s crucial that you establish a strong relationship with your healthcare provider and constantly advocate for your health. You can’t afford to outsource your health to someone else. Your body and health are your responsibility; no one else will ever be as invested in your wellbeing as you.

WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS? Osteoporosis is a severe condition in which bone density is significantly reduced. This condition makes bones weak and even brittle, increasing the risk of fractures. While osteoporosis is more common in older adults, especially postmenopausal women, it can affect anyone. Men need to be concerned about osteoporosis, even though it is often viewed as a condition primarily affecting women. While women are at higher risk due to hormonal changes after menopause, men are not immune to bone loss. Men typically experience a gradual decline in bone density as they age, with significant bone loss often beginning after age 70. Risk factors such as low testosterone levels, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, and certain medical conditions or medications can further increase their risk. Men are also more likely to remain undiagnosed until they suffer a fracture, as men are less frequently screened for osteoporosis.

CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D FOR STRONG BONES Maintaining strong, healthy bones is essential for overall well-being and mobility throughout our lives. Calcium and vitamin D play a crucial role in our bone health.

WHY CALCIUM IS ESSENTIAL Calcium is the primary mineral found in bones and is vital for maintaining their structure and density. Almost all of our bodies’ calcium is stored in our bones and teeth, providing the strength they need to withstand daily activities. Think back to when you were a small child, and your mother told you to drink your milk so you would have strong bones. Well, she was right. Calcium also supports vital functions such as muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and blood clotting. When dietary calcium is insufficient, the body draws from its calcium reserves in the bones, weakening them over time. Just before my cancer diagnosis, I noticed that my nails would constantly break or split down the middle. It was the first warning sign of my calcium deficiency. In addition to having my thyroid removed because of cancer, I also had two of my parathyroid glands removed, which led to me having ongoing issues with low calcium levels. Good sources of calcium include dairy products like milk, cheese, yogurt, leafy greens, almonds, fortified plantbased milk, and tofu. The recommended daily calcium intake for adults is about 1,000–1,200 mg, depending on age and sex. You can also take calcium in supplement form. However, be cautious, particularly if you don’t know your current calcium levels. I can tell you from personal experience that too much calcium is just as bad as a deficiency. As I am tested regularly, it’s easy to identify when my calcium levels are in excess from taking too much calcium, enabling my healthcare provider and I to take corrective action. Know your numbers! Always consult with your healthcare provider before taking any supplements.

THE ROLE OF VITAMIN D Vitamin D is just as critical as calcium for bone health because it facilitates calcium absorption from the digestive system into the bloodstream. Without sufficient vitamin D, the body cannot effectively utilize dietary calcium,

no matter how much is consumed. Vitamin D is unique because the body can synthesize it through exposure to sunlight. However, factors like limited sun exposure, aging, darker skin tones, and geographic location can hinder vitamin D production. In addition, we know that too much exposure to the sun can lead to skin cancer. Therefore, we must rely on other methods to obtain the appropriate amount of vitamin D our bodies require. Foods such as fatty fish (e.g., salmon, mackerel, and sardines), egg yolks, and fortified products can help provide vitamin D. Many individuals also benefit from supplements to meet the daily recommended intake of 600–800 IU for most adults. Again, know your numbers before taking any supplements.

VITAMIN D AND CALCIUM, YOU NEED BOTH Vitamin D and calcium work hand in hand to build and maintain bone density. Vitamin D ensures calcium is absorbed efficiently, while calcium provides the structural material for bone strength. A deficiency in either can lead to compromised bone health, increasing the risk of osteoporosis, fractures, and other complications. Vitamin D and calcium are the cornerstone of strong, healthy bones. By prioritizing these nutrients through diet, lifestyle, and supplementation when necessary, you can protect your skeletal system and reduce the risk of bone-related disorders. A proactive approach to bone health ensures greater strength, stability, and independence as you age.

TIPS FOR HEALTHY BONES - Consume a Balanced Diet: Include calcium-rich foods and those fortified with vitamin D to meet daily requirements. - Get Regular Sunlight: Spend 10–30 minutes outdoors in sunlight several times a week, depending on your skin tone and location. Make sure you apply sunscreen. - Exercise Regularly: Weight-bearing and resistance exercises stimulate bone formation and improve bone density. - Consider Supplements: If dietary intake or sun exposure is inadequate, consult a healthcare provider about taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. - Avoid Bone Depleters: Limit smoking, alcohol, and excessive caffeine, as these can negatively impact bone health.

STRENGTH TRAINING Strength training is a workout routine focusing on building muscle strength using light weights, resistance bands, or just your body weight. It’s a powerful tool in building bone density and muscle mass. It also strengthens the muscles around the bones, improving balance, posture, and stability, which reduces the risk of falls and fractures. Therefore, it is essential for both men and women to prioritize bone health through regular weight-bearing and strength-training exercises. It’s also worth noting that muscle plays a vital role in metabolism, aiding in weight management and reducing

the risk of chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Preserving muscle mass can improve energy levels, enhance posture, and promote mental well-being, allowing older adults to stay active and engaged in their communities. Regular strength training and a protein-rich diet are key to maintaining muscle health as we age.

WEIGHT-BEARING EXERCISES Weight training strengthens muscles and stimulates bone growth, helping to counteract the natural decline in muscle mass and bone density that occurs with aging. Additionally, it supports joint health, improves metabolic function, and enhances cardiovascular health, contributing to a better quality of life. Before starting a weight training program, consult a healthcare provider or fitness professional to ensure safety and proper technique. Focus on exercises that target major muscle groups and use proper form to prevent injury. It is essential to begin gradually to minimize the risk of injury. Recovery from an injury as we age takes time. Start with light dumbbells or utilize your own body weight to perform exercises. As you build strength and confidence over time, you will be able to progress safely to heavier weights. Women should not hesitate to incorporate weight training into their fitness routines. Contrary to common misconceptions, lifting weights will not result in a masculine appearance. Women naturally have significantly lower levels of testosterone compared to men, and these levels tend to decrease further with age. As a professional bodybuilder, in my 70s, I can attest to the fact that lifting weights will not negatively transform your physique. To the contrary, weight training helps improve muscle tone, enhances strength, and promotes a leaner physique by increasing calorie expenditure during and after training. Embracing resistance exercises can lead to improved health, confidence, and overall well-being.

SAFE AND EFFECTIVE WEIGHT TRAINING EXERCISES Focus on exercises that target major muscle groups and use proper form to prevent injury. Below are a few suggestions. - Squats & Step-ups: Targets quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes - Pushups: Targets chest, shoulders, triceps - Seated Rows with bands: Targets back, shoulders, biceps - Overhead Shoulder Press: Targets shoulders, triceps - Planks: Targets core

TIPS FOR SUCCESS Start slowly: Start with light weights or resistance bands. When I first started lifting, I thought 5 lbs was heavy. That’s a bag of sugar. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Be patient. As you built strength, gradually increase the weight. Focus on form: This is so important and cannot be stressed enough. Proper form is key to avoiding injury and ensuring you are training the muscle correctly. Ever wonder why there are mirrors everywhere at the gym? Use them to check your form.

Rest and recovery: Allow 48 hours between sessions targeting the same muscle group to promote recovery and growth.

CONCLUSION Building muscle after 60 is a vital component to maintaining health, mobility, and independence as we age. Strength training and a diet rich in protein, calcium, and vitamin D will help combat age-related muscle loss, enhance bone density, and support joint health. Starting training gradually and focusing on proper technique to ensure safety and effectiveness, while progressively increasing resistance builds strength over time. Regular weight training not only improves physical function but also boosts metabolism, enhances balance, and reduces the risk of falls and injuries. By committing to a consistent and well-rounded fitness routine, adults over 60 can enjoy greater vitality, resilience, and quality of life.
