Last year we spoke of ‘Africa Rising’ – a continent rich in potential and promise. This year’s theme builds on that message. By 2030, Africa will be home to nearly one-fifth of the global workforce, with over 375 million young people entering the job market. That’s not just a statistic, it’s a call to action that necessitates inclusive growth!
Over the past year we’ve built momentum through practical action, expanded partnerships, and stronger alignment across business and society. But the journey is far from over.
Our vision for transformation is not theoretical; it’s anchored in real progress. Guided by our 4 capitals framework and sustained level 1 BBBEE status, we continue to serve individuals, youth, and businesses. The YES Programme at Nedbank alone has placed over 17 000 previously unemployed youth in meaningful work since launching the programme
in 2019. We’ve also increased our financing of highimpact initiatives, supporting inclusive housing, township economies, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. These are not just investments but expressions of what we stand for: economic participation, social mobility, and long term resilience.
Our 2024 Society and Group Integrated Reports underline our commitment to financial inclusion, small and medium enterprises, and Just Transition-financing underpinned by our commitment to do good.
Nevertheless, the road ahead demands concerted effort. Global uncertainties remind us that success requires collaboration between businesses, governments, and civil society. The Nedbank Top Empowerment Conference is central to that collaboration. It is an opportunity to listen, challenge assumptions, and build partnerships rooted in trust and accountability.

The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) established in 2002 in terms of Section 2 of the Private Security Industry Regulation Act (Act No 56 of 2001). The strategic mandate of PSiRA originates from the Act and the regulations issued in terms of the Act. PSiRA is a National Public entity listed under Schedule 3A of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA)
The primary objectives of the Authority are to regulate the private security industry and to exercise effective control over the practice of the occupation of the security service providers in the public and national interest and the interest of the private security industry itself, and for that purpose , subject to the Act, to: promote a legitimate private security industry which acts in terms of the principles contained in the Constitution and other applicable law; ensure that all security service providers act in the public and national interest in rendering of security services; promote a private security industry which is characterised by integrity, accountability and innovation.

Q: Tell us about your upbringing.
A: My name is Sibusiso Luthuli, I was born in Umlazi Township, but my family later relocated to KwaDlangezwa in Empangeni where my father worked at the University of Zululand as a Professor. I am the third born child and only son out of 4 siblings. When I grew up my parents instilled strong values of Ubuntu and always encouraged us to work hard, my father used to say, “hard work has never killed anyone”. During school holidays we spend most of our time doing chores around the house. Since both my late parents were academics, they also encouraged us to focus on education.
Q: Who is Sbu “the Man”?
A: I am a family man. I have been married for 25 years and we are blessed with two boys. I am an avid soccer fan, I used to play soccer when I was at university. I played as a goalkeeper for the first team. During my spare time I enjoy cooking for my family.

Q: What is your educational background.
A: I am a qualified Chartered Accountant, CA(SA). For my high school education, I attended a missionary boarding school in Zululand in Mahlabathini. For my tertiary education I enrolled for a Bachelor of Pedagogics degree at the university of Zululand. After my second year and prior to completing the degree, my father convinced me to enrol for a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree I studied at the University of Durban Westville (now UKZN) for my post graduate degree.
Q: Tell us about your career experience.
A: I have had a long and illustrious career which started at BoE Corporate which later became Nedbank. In 2004, at the age of 31, I was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Ithala Bank, a position I held for 6 years. This is where I was able to display my business acumen and leadership capabilities. During the 6-year period, the bank grew from 31
branches to 58 branches. I was able to introduce new products such as debit cards, ATMs and unsecured personal loans. I also repositioned the branch locations (opened branches in shopping centers) and modernized the branch look and feel. The staff complement of Ithala grew from 300 staff members to around 600 staff members during this time.
I am the former Chief Executive and Principal Officer of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund (EPPF), a position I held for 8 years. The EPPF is one of the largest retirement fund in the country and one of the few pension funds that are selfadministered with 85 000 members and manages its assets and investments in-house. Under my stewardship, the assets under management of the fund grew from just under R58bn in 2010 to more than R140bn in 2018. I managed to transform the Fund to be more member-centric and efficient by replacing all archaic IT systems with more modern and efficient systems, automating processes and changing the culture of the Fund. Under my leadership, the Fund was at the forefront of driving transformation in the financial services sector by collaborating with other stakeholders and setting transformation targets as a minimum requirement to do business with the Fund.
I am the former Chairman of Cipla Medpro Pharmaceuticals Limited (formerly known as Enaleni Pharmaceuticals Limited). Enaleni was founded in 2003 as a contract manufacturing entity that later diversified into the pharmaceutical sector. Under my leadership as Chairman of the Company, Enaleni during 2004 was listed on the ALTX and during 2005 Enaleni concluded a reverse take-over of Cipla Medpro. This transaction valued at around R1.5bn at the time, allowed Enaleni to migrate its listing from ALTX to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange main board. Enaleni changed its name to Cipla and grew to become the 3rd largest pharmaceutical company in South Africa. During 2013, I led the negotiations that resulted in Cipla Medpro being fully acquired by Cipla India. This transaction was one of the biggest direct foreign investments at the time at around R5bn. During 2005, I was appointed as a non-executive director at Telkom SA Limited, a position I occupied until 2012. At Telkom I chaired the Corporate Actions Committee that was responsible for the unbundling and sale of Telkom’s 50% stake in Vodacom during 2008. At R45 billion, this was one of the largest

I am the non-executive Chairman of Mpact Limited. I am one of the founding members and the former Deputy Chairman of Batseta, Batseta is an industry organization for retirement funds and retirement fund fiduciaries. This organization was launched during 2014.
I am the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mpande Property Fund Manager (Pty) Ltd. Mpande is majority Black owned property fund that invests in the unlisted property sector. The Fund has an unlisted property portfolio of R3,4 billion.
Q: How are you involved in Hloba & Morewood?
A: Hloba was an idea that was born in 2005 during a game of golf with Roland Hansen (CEO of Hloba). I have been involved from inception as a shareholder and director to see Hloba grow from strength to strength. Subsequently, we decided to establish Morewood to do in-house manufacturing. Both businesses have grown significantly and have managed to secure blue-chip corporate clients. The two businesses have a combined staff compliment of around 350. We pride ourselves that our differentiator is the quality of our products and superior customer service.
