TRF26 OFFICIAL EVENT GUIDE

Page 1

Welcome from the Mayor

On behalf of my fellow Councillors and Toowoomba Region residents, I extend a warm welcome to competitors, officials, volunteers and sponsors attending the 2026 Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Running Festival.

This year marks an exciting evolution for the festival with the focus on one day of racing on Sunday, May 3, 2026. A fresh course for select races will direct competitors around some of our most historic buildings and landmarks, our famous tree-lined streets and popular parks and gardens.

There is no doubt residents and competitors from across Queensland, interstate and internationally have marked this autumn event in their running calendar.

Spectators will have many vantage points to cheer on the field across the ASICS Half Marathon, Visit Toowoomba Region 10km, Grand Central 5km and the Toowoomba Mile.

Toowoomba Regional Council is proud to support the festival and recognises the contribution that the event makes to our regional economy.

We are pleased to welcome returning competitors and first-time entrants and wish all runners the best of luck.

The Toowoomba Region is well versed in hosting sporting events and catering to the needs of competitors, support staff, sponsors and sports followers.

I encourage visitors to explore some of the unique areas on the city’s doorstep, including a host of regional towns and districts. There are many great locations for training runs.

Entering its third year, the 2026 Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Running Festival again offers a test for elite competitors, aspiring athletes and social runners.

The emphasis is on trying your best and enjoying the health and social benefits of pounding the pavement.

Thank you for visiting the Toowoomba Region. Please enjoy your stay. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Official Pacers

The Pacers Program assists participants to their time goals in the ASICS Half Marathon and Visit Toowoomba Region 10km. Pacers are experienced runners who aim to maintain a relatively even pace throughout the race with the goal to have you finishing slightly faster (30 seconds or so) than your goal time. As the Toowoomba course has some hills there will be times where they will have you running slightly faster than the average pace to make up for the climbs.

ASICS HALF MARATHON PACE TIMES

Pace Group min/km

For easy visibility, the pacers will be carrying a coloured balloon and a goal time sign high amongst the starting runners. Each pace runner will also wear a singlet with the goal time marked on the back.

Pacers will run to the ‘Net Time’ (also called ‘Chip Time’). Net Time is the time it takes you to complete the distance once you’ve crossed the start line. Note: Due to participant numbers, it may take several minutes to cross the start line after the gun is fired.

Commonwealth Games runner Brielle Erbacher returns to defend Toowoomba

mile record.

Known for her steeplechase running, this year Brielle Erbacher is returning to Toowoomba to compete in the Mile event.

She won the same event last year with a time of five minutes and eight seconds, a race record, and also holds the record for the women’s 5km run in 2024, with a time of 17 minutes and forty-four seconds.

The elite runner, who raced in the Commonwealth Games in 2022, runs all over Australia in preparation for her steeplechase events, having most recently won the The Sunday Mail Bridge to Brisbane Fun Run 5km event in 2025.

Brielle also raced the 3000m Steeplechase at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney placing second.

“Sometimes you don’t make it over them (the barriers) and you get a little bit owie, but most of the time you just have to forget about it and trust that you will make it over,” she said.

The events she runs throughout the year all revolve around the steeple.

“My whole year is always based around my steeple so it’s always my main focus, and then training in base season, you lean back to your 5km and 10km,” she said.

“You’re running a long run every week, which is a half marathon, but they all benefit each other, then you drop down to a mile and then that helps with your speed.”

For anyone looking to compete in the mile event at the Toowoomba running festival this year, Ms Erbacher said to just have fun.

“Don’t think that it’s too far that you need to pace yourself but at the same time don’t go all out because it will bite you on the other end,” she said.

Meet the champion runner training at 4am to balance family, work and injuries.

Jamie Lacey has won back-to-back Toowoomba marathons while battling sciatica for five years, but his biggest challenge remains balancing training with fatherhood.

As early as 4am you can see Jamie Lacey running around Toowoomba, training for his upcoming races. The 32-year-old won the Toowoomba Marathon in 2024 and 2025, and his preparations are already under way for the upcoming Half Marathon this year.

The married father of two and salesman at Toowoomba Bikes & Bits has also raced in the Sunshine Coast, Canberra and Gold Coast, and the GC50 Ultra Marathon. After taking a break from competitive cycling, Mr Lacey took up running in 2018 because he was enticed by the challenge.

“I intended to just do one marathon and it hasn’t stopped. I loved it and have kept it going,” he said.

“The difference in the amount of training that you need to do compared to cycling is a lot easier to consolidate with full-time work.”

Injuries to his knees and ankles haven’t stopped him, and he’s been running with sciatica pain from a back injury for the last five years.

“I’ve just learnt to deal with it more than anything. With running you’ve got to learn to navigate all the injuries that come with it.”

When it comes to training, Mr Lacey said it was hard to balance with raising a family and a full time job. “Look, it’s certainly difficult. Especially with young kids. It’s more of a load on the family than it is on just me. You can be selfish and just take the time for yourself, but for every minute that I take for myself, I’m taken from the family,” he said.

“So I get my training done at 4am, get ready for work, get the kids to daycare and then I go to work. It’s a pretty packed morning but I only have time to train in the mornings now.”

This year the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Running Festival has four races – a Half Marathon, a 10km and a 5km race, and the Toowoomba Mile. The course is certainly not easy. With equal parts uphill and downhill running, the Toowoomba course is gruelling.

“It’s extremely challenging in comparison to what most events will target, which is flatter, faster running,” Mr Lacey said.

For anyone looking to enter any of these races this year, Mr Lacey had great advice. “Just enjoy the ride along the way, start on the level that you’re aware you’re at, and adjust it accordingly.”

Spectator Zones and Supporters on the side

The buzz and excitement of the race is enhanced by supporters lining the Toowoomba streets from the Toowoomba Sports Ground to Picnic Point encouraging thousands of runners to achieve their goal.

Not running this year? Still come to the course to enjoy good times and soak up the thriving atmosphere at various vantage points along the course.

76 year-old Graham Dougherty takes on pacing duties

Graham Dougherty says he’s “not fast, but made to last”, and can’t wait to lace up his shoes for the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Running Festival.

Born in 1950, the 76 year-old is the oldest male member of the Toowoomba Road Runners. His running experience dates back to his days as a milkman in East Toowoomba. Mr Dougherty has been involved with the Road Runners for 12 years, and says his biggest piece of advice for budding runners is to just keep at it.

“I just find that consistency is the key, once you stop, you sort of lose it a bit and it’s too hard to get back.” he said.

Having gone through a bypass operation recently, he said running was a key component of his recovery. “It was really running that got me back into it, I started slow and did this run-walk business and did a lot of exercise and I have stuck with it ever since.” he said.

“You can’t sort of say to yourself, ‘I can’t do this’ because, deep down, you can if you stick with it.”

Mr Dougherty is excited to pace the 10km at a speed of 80 minutes, and cheer for everyone along the way.

“I think the running festival is good for the city, you’ve got hills, but you just slow down and walk those. It’s not the Olympics. Just get out and do it.” he said.

Aid Stations and Medical

In addition to meeting strict industry safety standards, the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Running Festival goes above and beyond in ensuring safety for all involved. From forward-thinking traffic management and detailed aid station assistance, the event continually aims to employ innovative and ground-breaking safety measures.

Electrolyte Drink – Fuel X

Fixx Nutrition is the official supplier of on course hydration for the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Running Festival. Fixx Nutrition Fuel X will be available at aid stations and the Recovery Area.

What is unique about Fuel X is that it contains all your carbohydrates with your hydration, so there are no need for Gels. It is recommended that if you plan to use Fuel X Tropical Fruits Flavour on race day, you should ‘train’ with this product prior to the event.

Race Weekend Tips

Runners can fall into a false sense of security and ignore exercise-induced physiological effects associated with participating in a race. Please keep these tips in mind while running so you have a safe and memorable experience:

▶ Only undertake the event if you’re adequately prepared and medically fit.

▶ Complete your emergency contact details on the back of your race number.

▶ Avoid dehydrating drinks the day before and on the day of your race.

▶ Stay hydrated on course. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, take advantage of our aid stations.

▶ If you require medical attention, please report to an aid station, race marshal or on-course medical personnel for assistance.

▶ Feeling faint or unwell during or after your run, stop and seek medical assistance immediately.

▶ After your race, seek shade and rehydrate with water and Fixx Nutrition Fuel X in the Recovery Area.

‘Age is only a number’: The running family preparing for the Toowoomba

Running Festival

Mark Galley was hot off the Boston Marathon when he ran the 10km event alongside his son Trent at the 2025 Toowoomba marathon.

This year, they’re taking on the half marathon, and getting more of the family involved.

The 62 year-old can be seen every week at his local parkrun, alongside his wife Christine, his children Trent and Kerrie and his grandchildren, 11 year-old Charlie and Elijah, and 8 year-old Stella and Lexi.

“It’s a family thing every Saturday morning,” Mr Galley said.

“They all come along, the young girls sort of walk run and are getting there slowly.”

“We all go out for breakfast after, so that’s another thing they all enjoy.”

Mark Galley has been running for a long time.

“Pretty well from day dot I started parkrun the first day it started here in Toowoomba,” Mark said.

“My grandson Charlie is 11 now, but when he was little, I used to push him in the pram.”

“He started running the lot and he’s now down to a personal best of 20 minutes and 8 seconds.”

At this year’s Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Running Festival, the whole family is getting involved. Mark is running the half marathon with Trent and Kerrie, while his wife Christine is still undecided.

“She did the half last year. She’s talking about doing the 10km with a couple of the grandkids.”

Mark’s advice for anyone running with kids is to just let them enjoy it.

“Don’t get competitive, just make it all about fun to start with, as their fitness comes along hopefully it clicks for them and away they’ll go.” he said.

For anyone looking to start running or join in with this year’s advice, Mark said to focus on your technique and take it slow.

“A lot of people always want to PB or run as fast as they can, but slow down and just get your technique right,” Mr Galley said.

“It takes quite a while for the body to adjust and as you get stronger in your joints and your muscles get stronger, it gets easier.

“A lot of people and my parents used to say I’m too old for that sort of thing, but I realise age is only a number now. You can do it.”
