Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Leverstock Green 0 Risborough Rangers 3 Saturday 9th April 2022
Leverstock Green were beaten at home by title-chasing Risborough Rangers, who clinched a promotion spot in the SSML Premier Division with Saturday’s three points. Fergus Moore was without several of his key players today, and although his side defended well to get to half time goalless, a dominant display from the visitors saw them well beaten in the second half. But for two penalty saves from keeper Alfie Bonfield, Leverstock could have suffered their worst defeat of the season. Risborough had the game’s first chance with Ben Sturges hitting the ball over the bar, but three minutes later Rawn Seale had Leverstock’s best effort of the game, shooting just wide from outside the penalty area. The last 15 minutes of the half saw heavy pressure from the visitors, with Sean Coles heading wide from a good chance on 33 minutes and the post being hit in a goalmouth scramble in the 39th minute. Good tackles from both Ryan Carruthers and Sean Walsh inside the penalty area prevented further chances as Leverstock reached the break with the game still goalless. Eight minutes into the second half Risborough were awarded a penalty, a somewhat harsh handball decision against Ollie Cox, who had the ball hit at him from a couple of yards away. Wyllie stepped up to take the kick but Alfie Bonfield dived to his right to turn the ball round the post. On 61 minutes Leverstock had their only real effort on goal of the half as Seale shot over the bar after a quick break started by Ethan Mooney. A minute later the ball was at the other end, and fell nicely at the feet of Wyllie, who hit a low shot from the edge of the box that Bonfield got a hand to, but couldn’t keep out as Risborough took the lead. There was almost a spectacular second for the visitors on 72 minutes as Coles went for an overhead kick which struck the underside of the bar and bounced away. However, the second goal did arrive three minutes later. From a rare Leverstock corner, Wyllie picked the ball up on the edge of his own box and ran the length of the field into the Green box before squaring the ball for Alex Kedzierski to slot home. As the game continued to be one way traffic, a third goal was added in the 87th minute by Joel Read with a shot from inside the box. In the second minute of stoppage time Risborough were awarded another penalty, this time for a foul by Kian Wilkes. Liam Enver-Marom stepped up to take this one, but again Bonfield guessed the right way and kept the penalty out. Leverstock Green (0) 0 Team: 1. Alfie Bonfield, 2. Ollie Cox (17. Brad Robinson 85 mins), 3. Rio Beach, 4. Jack Allen, 5. Paul Marks, 6. Kian Wilkes, 7. Ethan Mooney (16. Ethan Holt 77 mins), 8. Ryan Carruthers (14. Lewis Collins 67 mins), 9. THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE Tuesday 5 April / Wednesday 6th April / Thursday 7th April th
MIDWEEK HEADLINES Midweek brought about 46 goals from the 16 games (an average of 2.88 per game). Midweek Stats: 16 games played of which 4 were home wins, 7 away wins and 5 draws. THE GLADWISH CHALLENGE TROPHY Quarter Final Thursday night saw the last of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy quarter-final ties as Ardley United hosted Risborough Rangers, a tight even first half saw the sides go in goalless at the interval however it was a different story after the break as the 75 die-hard fans were treated to four goals as United booked a semi-final date at Hadley later this month, the pick of the hosts four second half strikes was the last one, a delightful chip from the edge of the penalty area by Jimmy Casbierd. PREMIER DIVISION A packed midweek Premier Division programme saw table toppers New Salamis and second placed Risborough Rangers continue their promotion push, Salamis travelled to Broadfields United but found the hosts a tough nut to crack but a second half strike eventually gave them a 1-0 win while Rangers struck with a goal in each half to win 2-0 at Dunstable Town. Third placed Hadley were in action on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings and a draw and a win maintained their outside chance of a top two finish, in the first of their two games they battled out a 1-1 draw at Aylesbury Vale Dynamos and two days later a solid second half performance saw them defeat visiting Harpenden Town 3-0 after the teams were level at the break. At the other end of the table both Holmer Green and Tring Athletic picked up a useful away point on Tuesday evening, Green securing a 1-1 draw at Harefield United while Athletic played out a goalless draw at Flackwell Heath. Elsewhere Milton Keynes Irish enjoyed a 3-1 win at Arlesey Town while another large crowd at Bell Close (304) saw Leighton Town held 1-1 by a battling Leverstock Green side. DUDLEY LATHAM MEMORIAL (PREMIER DIVISION) CUP Quarter Final (Sponsored by S & T Sales and Marketing) Tring Athletic left it late to reach the semi-finals of the Dudley Latham Memorial (Premier Division) Cup at Baldock Town on Thursday night, the visitors winning by the odd goal in five to set up a last four tie at either Risborough Rangers or Hadley. DIVISION ONE Midweek saw Wellingborough Whitworth and Ampthill Town both record wins as each press hard for a promotion playoff spot, Whitworth sit just outside in sixth place after defeating Penn & Tylers Green 3-0, a result that virtually ends any hopes the visitors had of a play-off spot while Town moved back into third place with a solitary goal win at Langford on Wednesday night. Elsewhere the mid-table clash between Buckingham Athletic and Rushden & Higham United saw the hosts in dominant form with three goals in each half to defeat their Northamptonshire visitors. DIVISION ONE CUP Quarter Final Kidlington Reserves and Amersham Town battled out a 1-1 draw in the Division One Cup on Tuesday night before the hosts squeezed through 5-4 on penalties, Kidlington will now host Shefford Town & Campton in the semi-finals. BEDS SENIOR TROPHY FINAL Stotfold cruised past Shefford Town & Campton to lift the Beds Senior Trophy on Wednesday night, the Division One pace setters were three goals to the good before the interval and netted once more after the break to complete a 4-0 win. HERTS SENIOR CENTENARY TROPHY FINAL Letchworth Garden City Eagles hopes of lifting the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy were crushed on Wednesday evening when they were beaten 1-4 in the Final by Herts County League side Chipperfield Corinthians.

THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE Saturday 9th April
SATURDAY HEADLINES Saturday brought promotion for New Salamis and Risborough Rangers. Winslow United ensured themselves a play-off spot. Saturday brought about 89 goals from the 23 games (an average of 3.87 per game). Jake Anthony (Harpenden Town), George Lutaaya (New Salamis) and Robert Doncaster (Winslow United) all netting hat tricks. Saturday’s Stats: 23 games played of which 7 were home wins, 14 away wins and 2 draws. PREMIER DIVISION The Premier Division title race remains as it was following Saturday’s round of fixtures with both the top two winning again, the only thing with these recent wins ensures both clubs gained promotion to Step 4 (unless the FA decides different). Leaders New Salamis were once again amongst the goals as they followed up last weekend’s 9-0 win with an 8-1 home success against Aylesbury Vale Dynamos while second placed Risborough Rangers despite missing two penalties won 3-0 at Leverstock Green thanks to three second half strikes. Hadley remain third after a late equalizer earned them a 1-1 draw at Flackwell Heath in front of a crowd of 425, the Hertfordshire club are now just a point away from securing third place. At the bottom it looks like relegation for the current bottom two Crawley Green and London Colney (the only saving grace could be a reprieve by the FA for the club that avoids the wooden spoon), Green were beaten 0-5 at Harpenden Town as the hosts finished their home programme for the season and can look forward to a new playing surface next season while for the free falling Colney it was a 0-3 home defeat by Harefield United. Elsewhere Baldock Town eased their relegation fears with a point at Milton Keynes Irish, the game finishing 1-1 while Dunstable Town were comfortable 3-0 winners at Oxhey Jets. The day’s other action saw Broadfields United beaten by a solitary goal at Ardley United while Tring Athletic, enjoying an end of season revival, won 2-0 on the road at Arlesey Town. DIVISION ONE Division One leaders Stotfold are just one win away from securing the title after a 5-2 win at play-off hopefuls Northampton Sileby Rangers and more from this one later in the ramblings. Second placed Winslow United assured themselves of a play-off spot with a 6-0 win at Rushden & Higham United while third placed Shefford Town & Campton need one more win to join them following their 3-1 success at struggling Kidlington Reserves. Fourth placed Ampthill Town could have reached the play-offs at the weekend but were surprisingly beaten 1-3 at home by Amersham Town and the Bedfordshire side will have to put their celebrations on hold for another week. At the bottom Burton Park Wanderers are virtually relegated despite winning 3-2 at home against Penn & Tylers Green while Raunds Town can breathe a little easier after winning 3-1 at Thame United Reserves. Elsewhere relegated Irchester United went down by the odd goal in three at home against Langford while the day’s other action saw Wellingborough Whitworth move back into the play-off places with a stunning first half display at Long Crendon, the visitors bagged five in the opening 45 minutes however the game fell flat after the break with no further scoring. DIVISION TWO Division Two table toppers Old Bradwell United continued their march towards landing the title with a 3-1 win at Risborough Rangers Development to extend their lead at the top to eight points while Aston Clinton made it eleven successive league wins with a 6-0 home success against struggling Buckingham United to stay fifth and keep their hopes alive with four games in hand on the leaders whom they face later this month. Totternhoe
2
maintained their recent unbeaten run with a 4-1 win against visiting Berkhamsted Raiders to leave their visitors anxiously looking over their shoulders at the bottom end of the table while in the day’s other league action Eynesbury United won by the odd goal in three at New Bradwell St Peter to remain sixth and keep alive their hopes of a top five finish which being the only club to apply for promotion will see them achieve their aim. DIVISION TWO CUP Quarter Finals Division Two bottom club Tring Corinthians AFC hosted second placed Bovingdon for a place in the semi-finals of the Division Two Cup, on paper what could go wrong? However this game was played on grass and the form book was thrown away as the minnows came out on top thanks to a solitary last minute goal to set up a home tie with Totternhoe. The remaining quarter-final saw Pitstone & Ivinghoe hosting Milton Keynes College Football Academy, as in the league meetings between these clubs this was a hard fought close affair with the league new boys from Milton Keynes edging it 2-0 and set-up a home tie against league leaders Old Bradwell United next week. AND FINALLY COMMITTEE AWAY DAYS League Board member, Bob Flight, travelled to Northampton Sileby Rangers and sends this report: The game of the day in Division one was at Northampton Sileby Rangers were they entertained league leaders Stotfold. Stotfold began the game with almost constant pressure on the home goal and they hit the woodwork on several occasions and had a goal disallowed for a foul. But it was Rangers that scored the first goal on 30 minutes when a great curling shot by Lewis Taylor flew into the far corner of the Stotfold net. However, Rangers were not in the lead for long as a mix up between a defender and keeper saw a penalty awarded to Stotfold which Connor Clark dispatched into the Rangers net on 32 minutes. Rangers had another chance, but Taylor missed from a good position. Worse was to follow for the home team as a right wing cross was powered into the net from close range by Ash Kersey on 40 minutes. The half ended with the slim lead for Stotfold who had to work hard for their advantage. If Rangers had any thoughts of getting back into the game at the start of the second half, this evaporated as Kersey scored his second and the third for Stotfold on 47 minutes. It was all Stotfold now, although Rangers did threaten on the break and had a couple of efforts either well saved or went wide. The game was effectively over when Substitute Codi Spavins scored twice. The first was a far post header on 72 minutes and then with a close range shot on 85 minutes. There was just enough time for Rangers to score their second goal when substitute Freitas fired in from just outside the penalty area on 88 minutes. Thus Rangers scored both the first and last goals in the game but unfortunately for them, Stotfold had scored five in the intervening period of the match. A good game to watch for the neutral spectator and the result maintains Stotfold as the division leaders. On the Twittersphere at the weekend we were treated to several gems and they are listed here (in no particular order of preference) – From the ever reliable and witty Aylesbury United we had – Also we apologize for the tweeting today.. usual Tweeter is away!! And was followed by Right time for an interesting fact before kick-off - How many times will the average human walk around the earth in their lifetime. Over at Irchester United there was this gem – 0-0 at half time, not the worse 45 minutes this season but in the top five. On the plus side the donuts are chocolate today. This was followed by 1-0 Irch Kyran Odell penalty, dodgy one but we don’t care. Harefield United brought us this one – 2-0 Austin is claiming it but the VAR isn’t convinced and finally from the SSML’s favourite owner, Mr. Elliott from Oxhey we had this delight – HT of an exciting match (that’s a complete lie!!). The result of this week’s Team of the Day Poll with 143 votes cast is: Winslow United 38.5% Aston Clinton 35.0% Tring Athletic 16.1% Burton Park Wanderers 10.4%
Nigel and Ioana’s Tea Bar A hot cup of tea or a lovely bacon baguette.

Tring Athletic FC Club History
THE EARLY YEARS Tring Athletic Youth FC was formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed towards the purchase of 3.4 acres at Miswell Lane. The cost of providing changing rooms, fencing, equipment and ownership of the ground was approximately £2,000, a lot of money in those days. Committee members, players and friends carried out most of the work, including the building of the changing rooms and during the early days the team had to play on another pitch in Tring. Originally the Club was formed to provide football for youngsters aged under 21 and despite playing against adult teams we won many trophies in the West Herts Saturday League during the early 1960's including the Division 1 title 3 times in 5 years. THE 70's/80's We then went through a lean spell and in 1971 decided to scrap the upper age limit and drop youth from our name. Many former players returned and we had another successful period during the early 1970's. Over the years many fine players appeared in our shirts and many went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the Miswell Lane ground was sold to the Council and we had a bad time and but for the efforts of a few loyal members would have certainly folded. The Reserves were disbanded and the First Team dropped down to Division 3. We decided to turn to youth again and gradually forced our way back up through the league and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Division and running a Reserve side again. SOUTH MIDLANDS - THE 90's In 1988 we joined the South Midlands and as a result gained senior status with the Herts FA. In 1989 we entered into a 3 year ground sharing arrangement with Isthmian League side Tring Town moving back to Miswell Lane in 1992 where the Reserves had continued to play. We established ourselves in the South Midlands by gaining promotion to the newly formed Senior Division in 1993. In 1994/95 the First Team reached the final of the Senior Division Cup whilst the Reserves were finalists in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running. In 1996/97 we led the Senior Division throughout the season and looked favourites to win the title. However, some unlucky defeats in the last few games saw us drop down to 3rd place. In addition to our impressive league form we also had some terrific cup runs during that season, reaching the semi-final of the Herts Charity Shield and winning the prestigious St. Marys Cup, the first time we had ever achieved such heights. In 1997/98 we just missed out on the Senior Division title by the narrowest of margins to New Bradwell St Peter - a goal difference of just 2! We finished the season in fine style, suffering just 1 defeat in our last 21 league games which included a terrific run of 14 straight wins for which we won a special award from the League. The Reserves went one better by winning their league by a clear 10 points and in doing so achieved 100% success in their league games at home. In 1998/99 we picked up our first major South Midlands trophy when we won the Senior Division Cup. We also won the St Marys Cup for the 2nd time in 3 years. In the league a terrific run of just 1 defeat in our last 28 games saw us finish in 3rd place, 4 points behind champions Holmer Green. During this magnificent run we went 15 hours without conceding a goal. The Reserves also did well finishing 5th in their first season in the top division. The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. During the summer we spent over £50k on building new changing rooms and extending the social and bar area. To mark the opening of the new changing rooms we played a Watford XI in front of a huge crowd of about 1,000 people. The game was Refereed by Graham Poll and Graham Barber. The season turned out to be the most successful in the Club's history. In addition to winning the Senior Division title by 11 points we also reached 5 finals. We won the Herts Charity Shield (beating Potters Bar Town
2-1), Herts Senior Centenary Trophy (Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in its inaugural year (Bedmond Sports & Social on penalties after a 1-1 draw). We were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Letchworth in the Senior Division Cup. Our achievements were recognised by the South Midlands who awarded us the Houghton Regis Cup for achievements in outside competitions and Mick Eldridge, Ray Brimson and Richard Vincent were voted Managers of the Season. In 60 games in all competitions we lost on only 6 occasions. Our other teams also enjoyed success with the Reserves reaching the Final of the Herts Intermediate Cup and the A Team in their first season finishing runners up in the West Herts Division 3. THE NEW MILLENNIUM After finishing the old millennium in style we continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts Charity Shield for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the sporting award. SEASON 2002/03 - More success followed as we capture the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12 major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club. SEASON 2003/04 - Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, Under 18's and Ladies sides. SEASON 2004/05 - New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A Vase for the first time. SEASON 2005/6 - The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference league. SEASON 2007/8 - Winners of Herts Charity Shield - We defeated Weylwn Garden City in the final of this County Cup to win the trophy for the 3rd time in our history. Match played at The County Ground, Letchworth. This was the first trophy for the new management team of Manager, Phil Casserley, Assistant, Terry Nightingale and Coach Julian Robinson. SEASON 2008/9 - Treble Winners - SSMFL Challenge Trophy Winners - Athletic defeated Chalfont St Peter by 3-2 at Harefield United's ground to lift this trophy in their first appearance in the final of this competition. SSMFL Premier Division Cup Winners - Athletic defeated St Margaretsbury by 2-0 at Colney Heath's ground to lift this trophy in their first appearance in the final. St Marys Cup Winners - Athletic defeated Leverstock Green by 2-1 at Hemel Hempstead's ground to lift this trophy for the 4th time. SEASON 2009/10 - The First Team finished without a trophy however they finished third in the league, the highest position in the Club's history. SEASON 2010/11 - The First team finished in the highest position, runners up to Chalfont St Peter in the SSMFL Premier Division. They also won the St. Mary's Cup for the fifth time, defeating Leverstock Green 2-1 after extra time. The season finished with a 2-0 defeat to Royston Town in the South Midland Floodlight Cup Final. SEASON 2011/12 - Julian Robinson and Tony Armitage took charge in the summer of 2011 knowing that many of last year’s successful First Team had departed. A great re-building job was undertaken with a very credible 6th position achieved in the league and defeats by the odd goal in 3 cup semi finals.
SEASON 2012/13 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. Midway through the season Tony Armitage left and Ian Richardson stepped up from the Reserves to assist Julian Robinson. Long serving, Stuart Stedman, was appointed coach to assist Colin Phillips with the Reserves who again had an excellent year bringing many players through to the First team.
SEASON 2015/16 - The First Team won the St Mary's Cup for the 5th time defeating Sun Sports 2-0 and finished midtable in the SSMFL Premier Division. The Reserves did the "double by winning the Suburban Football League North Division and also the Challenge Plate Competition defeating Cray Athletic 2-0. SEASO 2016/17: First team won the St Mary's Cup, were finalists in the Herts Charity Shield, 5th position SSMFL Premier Division and reached the 4th round of the F A Vase. Reserves were finalists in the Suburban Football League Challenge Trophy. SEASON 2017/18: The First Team reached the last 16 of the F A Vase for the first time losing unluckily to Melksham Town in front of a crowd of 1,236. The "A" Team set a Club record winning the West Herts Premier League and Cup double and only losing one game that being the final of the Herts Junior Cup. SEASON 2018/19: The First Team were Runners Up in SSMFL Premier Division, equaling our best ever position. The Reserves were Suburban Football League Central Division Champions and the "A" Team were Herts Junior Cup Winners and West Herts Senior Cup Finalists. SEASON 2019/20. Massive change at the club with long serving manager Kevin Richardson standing down and 14 from last year’s successful squad moving on to other clubs. Kevin Christou took over the reins for six months, replaced by Chris Juraszek, who has run our reserve team for several years. Chris’ remit was to return the club to its traditional values of operating prudently and developing local talent, which he has done. In a season truncated due to Covid we finish second. SEASON 2020/21. A season decimated due to the Covid pandemic, playing in fits and starts and behind closed doors until finally the league took the decision to cancel the competition.
SEASON 2021/22. We begin this season with a new management team, headed by Ryan Sturges and Lee Groves, both former players at the Club. The Covid pandemic has provided us with the opportunity to complete a number of behind-the-scenes projects including installing new floodlights and re-furbishing the clubhouse. Despite a slow start to the season on the playing side, we feel we are in a good place to achieve a three-year plan aimed at overall club progression.

VICE PRESIDENTS CLUB 2021-22 Leverstock Green Football Club would like to thank the Vice Presidents for their help and assistance pledged for last season. Alan Brett, Colin Bull, Bill Dawes, Peter Dennis, Jim Doble, Peter Frasier, Phil Gray, P Isaacs, Tony Smart, Roger Stokes and Sue Hollick As in previous seasons the donations made by our Vice Presidents have assisted us in providing many improvements. Would you like to join, £25 will secure your place.
Step 5 and Step 6 Promotion and Relegation Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons. At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter-Step Play-Offs. This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted. The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play-Off Criteria 12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
