THE GLADWISH CHALLENGE TROPHY Second Round The one remaining Second Round tie of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy saw Division Two side Codicote hosting Premier Division side Harefield United and there was to be no fairy tale as the higher ranked ‘Hares’ took full control of the game in the first half running in three goals without reply. ‘Cod’ rallied a little after the break and reduced the deficit but never really threatened anything more than that one consolation. THE GLADWISH CHALLENGE TROPHY Third Round Three Gladwish Challenge Trophy Third Round ties were played midweek and all three went the way of the higher ranked sides. Premier Division Risborough Rangers won convincingly at Division One side Long Crendon 4-0 while Division One Ampthill Town edged out visiting Division Two side Bovingdon by the odd goal in three. The other tie saw Division One Northampton Sileby Rangers winning 2-0 at home against Division Two side New Bradwell St Peter. PREMIER DIVISION Table topping New Salamis extended their lead at the top to five points with a midweek 3-0 win over visiting struggling club London Colney while the other midweek fixture saw Tring Athletic ease their relegation fears with a 4-1 home success against Aylesbury Vale Dynamos.

DUDLEY LATHAM MEMORIAL (PREMIER DIVISION) CUP Second Round (Sponsored by S & T Sales and Marketing) There was a very eventful Second Round tie in the Dudley Latham Memorial Cup on Tuesday night as Ardley United hosted Leighton Town. The visitors cruised into a two goal lead after 39 minutes and then seemed to implode as the hosts restored parity by the interval, after the break the self-collapse continued to haunt Leighton and they found themselves trailing and to make matters worse ended the game with just eight players following two red cards and a sin-bin. The night’s other Second Round tie saw Flackwell Heath advance to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 home success against Broadfields United. BEDS SENIOR CUP Quarter Final Arlesey Town’s hopes in the Beds Senior Cup ended at the quarter-final stage at former SSML side Biggleswade United, the hosts winning by the odd goal in five despite being a man down after a red card with the winner coming in the final minutes. HERTS SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP Quarter Final Hadley booked their place in the Herts Senior Challenge Cup semi-finals with a well-deserved win over Step 4 Southern League side Ware. The tie postponed last week was switched with agreement of both clubs to the 3G surface at Ware to ensure it was played this week and got off to a flying start when Ware went ahead after two minutes before Hadley hit back to take control of the game and a quick fire double saw them ahead at the break. Just like the first half Ware struck early and within three minutes of the restart of was level again. With both sides giving it all it looked set to be decided on penalties however Hadley had other ideas and five minutes from time settled the tie in their favour and a chance to host Royston Town in the last four. DIVISION ONE Winslow United missed the chance to close the gap at the top to a single point when they suffered a 1-3 home reverse by mid-table Penn & Tylers Green while Shefford Town & Campton moved to within one point of a play-off spot as they made it five league wins on the bounce games with a 5-2 home success against one of their rivals in the play-off battle Wellingborough Whitworth. Elsewhere at the other end of the table bottom club Irchester United were beaten by the odd goal in three at home by local rivals Raunds Town while Amersham Town eased their relegation fears with a solitary goal win against visiting Buckingham Athletic. Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Leverstock Green 1 Ardley United 0 Saturday 26th February 2022 Leverstock Green ended a run of seven home league games without a win as they finally claimed three points from a game at Pancake Lane. And just like their last league win at Broadfields three weeks ago, it was a goal deep into stoppage time that won the game. Before the game, Leverstock skipper Dan Weeks was presented with the Respect award for January, presented by Mike Taylor from the Spartan South Midlands League. It is the second time this season that the Green side has won this award. Fergus Moore had Ollie Cox missing through suspension to add to the list of injuries in the squad, but new signing Adam Page made his debut up front. Leverstock almost took a very early lead in the game. A pass from Rawn Seale put Elgeniy Daalberg in on goal, and although keeper Freddie Lapworth got a hand to Daalberg’s shot, it was still heading for the corner of the net until a defender scrambled back to clear off the line with just thirty seconds played. Despite the bright start, it was actually a game of few chances between two evenly matched teams. In the 36th minute Leverstock went close again as a shot from Dan Pett was deflected and saved by Lapworth, and Seale’s effort from the rebound was blocked. Paplamin Jawara hit the post from a free kick with the last kick of the first half. There was another chance in the opening minute of the second half as a free kick from Rio Beach found Seale with his back to goal, but his hooked shot went just wide of the goal. A great save from Alfie Bonfield in the 63rd minute denied Ardley a goal, as Bonfield dived down to his right to turn away a shot from the edge of the box through a crowd of players. Two minutes later the visitors went close again as a shot from Declan Benjamin went just wide. Leverstock should have gone in front with six minutes to play. Beach made a run into the Ardley half before laying off to Daalberg, who showed his pace before hitting a shot that came off the inside of the post. The ball rebounded across goal to where Scott McGleish was coming in with the goal at his mercy, but somehow his header managed to hit the underside of the bar and rebound to safety. It looked as though Leverstock had missed their chance for the win, but there was still one chance to come two minutes into stoppage time. Jack Allen won the ball on the right touchline and played a long pass forward which Seale ran onto, and after showing the composure to sidestep a defender, Seale planted a shot into the corner of the net to break the deadlock. With barely a minute to play after the restart, the Green side held onto their lead to claim an important three points which moves them back up to sixth place in the Premier Division table. SATURDAY HEADLINES Saturday brought about 89 goals from the 23 games (an average of 3.87 per game). Ben Fitzjohn (Burton Park Wanderers) and Scott Valentine (Old Bradwell United) both bagging hat tricks. Saturday Stats: 23 games played of which 16 were home wins, 5 away wins and 2 draws. PREMIER DIVISION Risborough Rangers narrowed the gap at the top to two points with a 3-0 win at Arlesey Town, all the goals coming in the second period while Leighton Town remain third after a 1-1 at Harpenden Town. Hadley remain fourth after winning 3-1 at home against Aylesbury Vale Dynamos. At the bottom Crawley Green recorded their first home league win of the campaign with a 4-1 success against the team immediately above them Holmer Green while Baldock Town slumped to a 0-3 defeat at Harefield United. Elsewhere Flackwell Heath enjoyed a fine 4-0 win at Oxhey Jets while Dunstable Town saw off the challenge of visiting Broadfields United 3-0. The day’s other Premier Division fixture saw Leverstock Green edge out visitors Ardley United by a solitary goal and more on this one later in the ramblings. DIVISION ONE Winslow United recent run of poor form saw them slump to a third successive league defeat as they failed to take advantage of leaders Stotfold not playing to close the gap at the top and more on this one can be found later in the ramblings. Third placed Ampthill Town kept up the pressure on the top two with an odd goal in three home success against lowly Kidlington Reserves. At the bottom of the standings there were good results for Burton Park Wanderers, London Tigers and Amersham Town in their bods to avoid that relegation trapdoor. BPW recorded their second win in three games with a 5-0 success against visiting Langford while the ‘Tigers’ enjoyed a 2-1 home success against Rushden & Higham United. Amersham extended their recent run to just one defeat in the last six league games with a 2-2 draw at promotion chasing Wellingborough Whitworth. Elsewhere Shefford Town & Campton climbed into the play-off places with a sixth successive league win, this one coming against visiting Penn & Tylers Green by the odd goal in five while Bedford leap-frogged their visitors Long Crendon in the battle of two promotion contenders, the hosts winning 4-1 with all the goals coming in the first half. The day’s other Division One action saw Buckingham Athletic defeating Raunds Town 3-0 thanks to three unanswered second half goals in Buckinghamshire. DIVISION TWO Old Bradwell United were in ruthless form as they strolled to an 8-0 home win against Berkhamsted Raiders to maintain their three point lead at the top of the standings ahead of Bovingdon who enjoyed a 3-1 success at neighbours Sarratt. Pitstone & Ivinghoe now sit third after winning 3-1 at home against the positions previous occupants Eynesbury United while Milton Keynes College Football Academy moved up to fourth after dispatching visitors New Bradwell St Peter 5-1 having lead 4-0 at the break. Elsewhere Aston Clinton continued their fine form of late with a 2-1 win at Totternhoe while life remains hard for struggling Buckingham United as they suffered another defeat, this time going down 0-4 at Risborough Rangers Development.

DIVISION TWO CUP First Round Tring Corinthians AFC might be bottom of the league but they put that aside as they progressed to the quarterfinals of the Division Two Cup with a 2-1 home success against Codicote, the hosts went into the break two goals up and withstood a second half onslaught to set up a home date with either Bovingdon or Sarratt. COMMITTEE AWAY DAYS Mike Taylor, Saturday’s travel took me up to Pancake Lane, ostensibly to present Leverstock Green with their February MDH Respect Trophy and to say hello to the folk from Ardley. Of course on the green bit there was a game of football between two clubs arguably, with a chance to get into the play-off slots. The pitch in fine condition after the recent weather’s challenges, sunny and spring like, with a quartet of League Management Committee members swelling the gate…was this a ‘’Smart’’ move or did it ‘‘ardley’’ matter…(sorry!!!). Both teams worked hard at their game, but goal bound chances were few and far between, no lack of endeavour though. If the home team had the edge in the first half then it was the visitors who had the edge pushing uphill in the second period, but the Levy custodian refused to be beaten. As the game drifted towards the 90th minute the home team forwards realised that opportunities could be sought, and Ardley managed to scramble away an opportunity that came off the post, when it seemed likely it would ruffle the back of the net!! If at first you don’t succeed, and as were entered the 93rd minute a brilliant, mazy run down the right wing, cut inside the defenders and wham…1-0. Euphoria from Levy, utter dismay from the visitors who must have felt that they would share the points. Even then as the time ran out, the Ardley keeper managed another save with a brave header!!! Something about a game not being over ‘until the fat lady sings’ (can we say that these days?). For Ardley the long and ‘pointless’ journey back in to Oxfordshire, but to their credit have no travel complaints about their first season in the SSMFL. The warm welcome in the Boardroom was enjoyed by all… perhaps that is where the ‘’Smart’’ money is??? Final word to the third team who managed the game proficiently and whether by accident or design, barely an expletive throughout the game…well done. The Roving Ref Bob Flight was at Winslow United and sends the following report: The top game in Division one was second placed Winslow United versus fifth placed Northampton Sileby Rangers. The home team were desperate to put the past two losing league games behind them and put pressure back onto leaders Stotfold. However, Winslow failed to trouble the scorers as they slumped to another defeat. The first half was fairly even and only a failure by Winslow to clear their defence allowed Nathan Burrows to score for Sileby on 18 minutes. Winslow tried to respond and they had a great chance just before half time but Mackenzie May in the visiting goal made a good save. Whilst the approach play from Winslow was good, the final ball was poor which put no pressure onto the Sileby goal. The second half started with the home crowd expecting a Winslow response and they had an early chance from a free kick, but this was wasted. Another defensive slip on 60 minutes saw Lewis Taylor run clear for Sileby and although his first shot was saved by keeper Charlie Jones, Taylor scored from the rebound to put Sileby two up. Further misery was heaped upon Winslow when Lewis Taylor cleverly lobbed the ball over the head of Jones and into the far corner of the home net on 68 minutes. Winslow continued to battle and from a corner kick, their effort was headed off the Sileby goal line, another home failure to clear their lines saw a right wing cross converted by Burrows on 75 minutes to secure a comfortable win for Sileby. The score does not do justice to the effort put in by Winslow but Sileby were clinical with their finishing and they seemed to want to win the game more and thus fully deserved the three points. Winslow must put this bad result behind them if they want to continue to challenge for promotion. Milton Keynes Irish FC History On June 1st 2020 the club was formed when Milton Keynes Robins, Unite MK and Milton Keynes Irish Veterans joined together to operate as one club going into the 2020/21 season, Milton Keynes Irish FC! The first team playing at Step 6 in the Spartan South Midlands Division One, the newly formed reserve team playing in the UCL Reserve Division and the Veterans playing in the Veterans League Division One. There are also adult teams in the North Bucks & District League and the Milton Keynes Sunday League. Our first season as a club was unfortunately brought to an early finish due to the effects of COVID-19. The 2020/21 season was looking to be very promising as we found the first team sitting second in the table after 9 games played with the best PPG in the league and went on an exciting run in the FA Vase which saw us get knocked out in the 3rd round on penalties after advancing through 4 rounds beating three higher league opposition. The season was officially curtailed, however due to performances under Milton Keynes Robins, the club earned promotion to the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division (Step 5) based on PPG over the previous 2 seasons. 2021 also saw the addition of an U18 Floodlit team (run by MK College under the Adopt a Team Scheme) and another 5 youth teams who came over to join under the MK Irish banner from Scot FC, increasing the number of teams to 11.

Leverstock Green FC History & Honours May 20th 1907 Whit Monday May 20th 1907 WHIT MONDAY SPORTS AT LEVERSTOCK GREEN The third athletic sports in aid of the Leverstock Green Parish Room Fund took place on Whit Monday when success again attended the efforts of the promoters. There was, however, not such a large crowd as last year but this can no doubt be accounted for by the unpleasant weather which prevailed on the day. The sports this year were held in a meadow next the church kindly lent by Mr. J. Bailey of Chambersbury. The whole of the arrangements were excellent, and were carried out by a hardworking committee comprising Messrs A. Seabrook, W. Dell WW Sears, A. Mears, B. Sears J Hallett and J. Cooper with Mr. WW Wright as hon. secretary. The afternoon’s proceedings commenced at about 3 o’clock, the Dickinson Silver Prize Band being already on the ground. A sports programme of 15 events was gone through and on the whole excellent form was shown by the competitors. No doubt the most amusing of all was the climbing of the greasy pole, whilst much interest was shown in the football tournament and the obstacle race, the goal kicking competition and several others. Goal Kicking Competition. 1 A. Plowman (plated jam-jar) 2. E. Rance (military brushes) 3. L. Tidy (cigarette case) TUG OF WAR - This event between the Sports Committee and Leverstock Green Football Club resulted in an early win for the committee; the footballers being unable to stand against them. Each member of the winning team was the recipient of a clay pipe. Football tournament - in three heats the winners were E. Rance, B. Mayo, T. Perkins, G. Goodenough, each of whom received a walking stick.

VICE PRESIDENTS CLUB 2021-22 Leverstock Green Football Club would like to thank the Vice Presidents for their help and assistance pledged for last season. Step 5 and Step 6 Promotion and Relegation Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons. At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter-Step Play-Offs. This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted. The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play-Off Criteria 12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
