Emma Smart’s Chairman's Mid-Season Update We’re at the half waypoint of the season and it's safe to say it's been a great half with many ups and downs on and off the pitch. The season started with 3 very long and late nights interviewing for the new First Team manager’s role, where four officers came to a decision and along came Fergus Moore accompanied by Scott McGleish, Paul Marks, Darren Bonfield and we were extremely lucky to keep AJ on board from last season. Then came pre-season and with new managers comes new players and a new way of football. We welcomed a new squad made up of players that have been playing for Fergus for a long time; we retained a fair few familiar faces and some new players too. We had a strong pre-season, playing some very difficult sides and it was a great chance to see what we were looking at for the up-coming season. The season started and after 5 games we sat second, a position Leverstock hadn't been in for a while, while trying not to get too ahead of ourselves, it's safe to say it was a nice position to find ourselves it, after all it’s a long season. We’ve had a few downs on the pitch but we’ve had a lot of ups with the boys' abilities shining through. We currently sit in 6th place going into the second half of the season and long may it continue, I can't wait to see what the second half of the season brings. It's been a pleasure welcoming Fergus, his management team and all the players to Levy and to see how the team has bonded makes me proud of what we have got for the future. Moving on to the Under 18 side and we were lucky enough to retain Ross for the new season and he also bought along a few fresh faces in his management side and also started almost from scratch with a very young 18 squad. Pre-season for them was again pretty strong with the players showing some very good and quick ability. The season started and it proved that things might be a little tough. After losing a few games, it was time for Ross to change things about and with these changes came 4 wins, which pushed them up the league table. The young lads saw out their first half of the season in a game against Kings Langley, who sit top, where unfortunately the score did not go our way, but they showed a lot of grit and determination throughout. I have every faith the boys can keep this determination going and will continue to move up the league table continuing to do the club proud. Our EJA side remained at under 15’s only this season but have showed us exactly why they are important to the club. Lee, Stuart and their team kept all the same squad from last season and added a few new faces also. They started as they meant to go on with a very strong preseason and continued this into the league. Having won 8 league games, they sit top of the league table with a healthy goal difference and their football shows why. Most of the lads have played together for at least 5 years and show knowledge and understand of football, they were even able to play under lights at an EJA cup competition, which they also are flying high in. It’s a pleasure to have these gents and lads at the club proving that youth is important in any aspects of Football.
Off the pitch, saw a change around in roles within the officers; Jamie stepped up as President whilst Bill took a step to the side, although still plays a heavy role within the club. Tony remains at my side as my vice- chairman and Dean remains the Secretary taking on the many roles I throw his way, whilst I am currently overseeing the treasurer role and doing a great job at delegating. Without these gents, we wouldn’t be the club we are and wouldn’t be in the position we are in so I would like to thank you all. To all my committee members and volunteers, who week in week out continue to help the club and put in the long hours tirelessly I cannot thank you enough. The help and generosity of you all does not go unnoticed and I for one am ever so grateful. Without people like you, we wouldn’t have the friendly club we have. Lastly, a huge thank you to all our supporters and sponsors who come and watch the games week in week out no matter the score line. To the new faces I have been so lucky to meet and to the true Leverstock Green supporters that have been with us since the beginning, it’s a pleasure to see you all every week continuing to show the lads your support. Things still are not where they used to be because of Covid and may not be for a while but we will continue to keep it as ‘normal’ as possible and can't wait to see you all there soon. It's safe to say, things at Levy are positive with a lot of smiling faces and happy people.

THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE
Saturday 18th December
THE GLADWISH CHALLENGE TROPHY Second Round Division Two side Bovingdon pushed their Premier Division visitors Tring Athletic all the way in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy Second Round tie, the higher ranked side will be glad that a difficult hurdle was overcome thanks to two-second half strikes. The game also saw a flurry of cards (and no these were not early Christmas Cards) although it was not a dirty game. Full result and goalscorers are listed below. PREMIER DIVISION The title race got a little more interesting on Saturday, leaders Risborough Rangers extended their unbeaten league run to 50 games with a 4-1 home success against Oxhey Jets (you have to go back to the 9th April 2019 for their last league defeat, 0-1 at Winslow United) while New Salamis moved to within a point of second placed Leighton Town with a 3-0 win at Ardley United. Bottom club Crawley Green were well beaten at Hadley, the hosts winning 5-0 while Arlesey Town got off to a flyer with a goal after just 19 seconds at London Colney before going on to totally control the game finally winning 5-1. The day’s other action saw 201 packed into Creasey Park where Dunstable Town and Flackwell Heath battled out a 1-1 draw. Full results and goalscorers are listed below. DIVISION ONE Saturday’s Division One league programme saw all eight fixtures result in home wins. Stotfold remain top as their recent high scoring form continued with a 10-2 hammering over visiting Thame United Reserves while in the day’s big game (3rd v 4th) Ampthill Town edged out visiting Wellingborough Whitworth by a solitary goal. Goals were certainly on the menu as the eight fixtures produced 49 of them, Shefford Town & Campton were in ‘seventh heaven’ as they cast aside visiting bottom club Irchester United 7-3 (Snee and McNamara sharing the hosts goals between themselves) while the new owner of Bedford (Peter McCormack) could only look on as his recently acquired club were beaten 1-6 at Northampton Sileby Rangers. Elsewhere London Tigers eased any relegation fears with a 5-0 win at home against Kidlington Reserves while Penn & Tylers Green saw off visiting Raunds Town 5-1. The day’s other action saw Rushden & Higham United squeeze past Long Crendon, the hosts winning 3-2 while Langford edged out Burton Park Wanderers by the odd goal un three. Full results and goalscorers (where known) are listed below.
2
DIVISION TWO Eynesbury United moved up to second place level on points with leaders Old Bradwell United (who were inactive) as they overcame visiting Sarratt 3-0. At the bottom of the table The 61FC (Luton) picked up three points with a 2-1 home success against Risborough Rangers Development while bottom club Tring Corinthians AFC recorded their fifth successive league defeat when going down at home to Totternhoe by the odd goal in three. The day’s other action saw Berkhamsted Raiders defeat visiting Buckingham United 3-2. Full results and goalscorers are listed below. BERKS & BUCKS CHARLES TWELFTREES TROPHY Second Round New Bradwell St Peter’s hopes of success in the Berks & Bucks Charles Twelftrees Trophy came to an end when they were beaten 1-4 at Hellenic League side FC Beaconsfield in the Second Round. Full result and goalscorers (where known) are listed below. AND FINALLY Don’t forget that every Sunday afternoon the Non-League Show on Three Counties Radio (Herts, Beds & Bucks), a show all about local non-league football. The popular show presented by Ollie Bayliss has been increased to two hours each week and is the perfect opportunity to catch up with our local non-league scene at all levels. For those who missed it then you can catch up here:- https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0b75w7v The result of this week’s Team of the Day Poll with 523 votes cast is:- Risborough Rangers 40.5% Stotfold 28.5% Ampthill Town 17.6% Berkhamsted Raiders 13.4% It seems that matters on the field are not the only things managers have to worry about to keep their jobs Kilmarnock manager Tommy Wright has been sacked following his sides game with Dunfermline Athletic was abandoned due to fog (He obviously didn’t see that coming). Mind you it still has a long way to go to beat the dismissal of Sunderland manager Malcolm Crosby who was sacked after a defeat on the pools panel following the game with Tranmere Rovers being called off several years ago. May I take this opportunity to wish a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to my avid reader (I’m sure I have one person that reads this rubbish).

Monday 27th December / Tuesday 28th December / Thursday 30th December
PREMIER DIVISION The festive fixtures began on Monday as landlords Arlesey Town entertained tenants Baldock Town in front of a healthy crowd of 225. The hosts opened the scoring only to be find themselves behind at the break thanks to two late goals, after the interval they leveled it up to ensure everyone went home happy with a point apiece. Tuesday saw just two games surviving with the pick being the clash between third placed New Salamis hosting fourth placed Hadley, a three goal spell put the visitors well in control by the interval and a further goal after the break competed a 4-0 win while another local derby at Tring Athletic saw a game of two halves with the hosts 2-0 up at the break before Leverstock Green hit back with three unanswered goals in the second period to take the points. Thursday night saw table toppers Risborough Rangers totally in command in their game at struggling Holmer Green, 4-0 up at the interval before adding two further goals to record a 6-0 win to see them end the year with a seven point lead at the top of the standings. Full results and goalscorers are listed below. DIVISION ONE The Division One league programme saw third placed Ampthill Town welcome fifth placed Bedford in front of a crowd of 371 and a report on this one can be found later. Long Crendon moved up to fourth with a 7-3 win over visiting Kidlington Reserves while on Monday Penn & Tylers Green saw off visiting Thame United Reserves by the odd goal in five. The day’s other action brought about a 4-2 away win for Langford at neighbours Letchworth Garden City Eagles. Full results and goalscorers are listed below. DIVISION TWO Just two games survived the weather and Covid in Division Two, Totternhoe moved up to fourth place with a win over local rivals The 61FC (Luton), the Totts edging it by the odd goal in five while Pitstone & Ivinghoe enjoyed a big win at Risborough Rangers Development, the visitors running out 6-2 winners with the goals shared by six players. Full results and goalscorers are listed below. COMMITTEE AWAY DAYS Dave Henman was at Ampthill Town on Tuesday and pens the following- This was one of those games that turned into an absolute cracker, which neither side deserved to lose. Bedford shaded the first half, whilst Ampthill shaded the second. On an excellent pitch, which didn't even require a pitch inspection, from the off both sides were intent on attack. Both sides played a patient passing game, and the quality displayed belied the fact that this was Division One of our League, which in all honesty would've graced the Southern, or Isthmian League. The opening goal was a long time coming, but eventually arrived in the 32nd minute, which put the visitors ahead. A long ball was hoisted into the Ampthill penalty area when CHISOM AMADI outmuscled Glenn Cooksley and squeezed a shot in by the near post and custodian Ross Tompkins. As the second half began Ampthill went for the jugular from the off and their determination was rewarded by a 50th minute equalizer. From a corner JAMIE CERMINARA rose highest and guided his header into the far corner of the net giving the keeper no chance. Despite chances at both ends there was no further score mainly due to the heroics of both keepers, ably supported by both defenses. As a non-referee I thought the young ref - Toby Carlisle - had an excellent game. Both Ampthill and Bedford officials were of the same opinion. Even one of the Ampthill players - who incidentally was booked - agreed with me. The game was played in an excellent spirit, and even though there were 7 bookings - 3 for cynical obstructions, but none of them were disputed, so respect marks should be very good. As an added bonus the crowd was a whopping 371, which is a financial bonus to Ampthill's coffers! As a final note, although I doubt that either team pay their players, the determination and effort displayed by both teams was an absolute credit to both clubs.

Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Gladwish Challenge Cup 2nd Round Tring Athletic 2 - Leverstock Green 3 Tuesday 28th December 2021 Leverstock Green produced a fantastic comeback to turn a two-goal deficit into a 3-2 win in Tuesday’s Dacorum Derby at Tring Athletic. With 20 minutes to go Fergus Moore’s side were still 2-0 down to the ten men of Tring, but three well-taken goals turned the game on its head. The omens weren’t good for Leverstock, who hadn’t won at the Grass Roots Stadium for a number of years, and were facing four players in the Tring side who had been at Leverstock for the previous two seasons. In the early stages it looked like luck was against them, as Dan Pett struck a superb free kick in the 12th minute, which came back off the crossbar. Three minutes later Tring had a free kick at the other end but Alfie Bonfield saved from Frankie Hercules. On 20 minutes Leverstock had another chance when a pass from Tomasz Siemienczuk gave Rawn Seale a run at goal, but Tring keeper Jake Alley saved his shot. At the other end on 27 minutes it was Tring’s turn to hit the woodwork as a long-range shot from one of the former Green players Adiel Mannion struck the bar. The game had been even up to the point when Tring were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute. The view of most in the ground was that James Hall’s tackle hadn’t been a foul, but the referee was adamant in his decision, and former Green skipper John Smith drove home the spot kick to put Tring into the lead. Things got worse for Leverstock four minutes later when a catastrophic mix-up on the halfway line allowed Mannion to run clean through on goal, and he made no mistake with his finish to put Tring into a 2-0 lead. Another turning point in the game occurred in the 58th minute, when Tring were reduced to ten men. While Pett was receiving treatment after a foul challenge, an off-the-ball incident took place between Kian Wilkes and another of the former Leverstock players Jack Stevens. The incident was spotted by the assistant referee, and the decision was a yellow card for Wilkes and a straight red for Stevens. Leverstock had been the better side in the second half, but were still not getting the run of the ball in the penalty area, as Tring appeared to be holding onto their lead. There was an unhappy end to the game for James Hall, who was playing his first game of the season while on a break from university in the USA, as he had to be helped from the field with an injury in the 69th minute. However, in the 71st minute they finally got their deserved goal. Seale played a beautiful curling pass into the path of Siemienczuk, who burst between two defenders to go clean through and slot the ball neatly past Alley to put the Green side back in the game at 2-1. Two minutes later many in the ground thought that the scores had been levelled as Rio Beach hit a shot that rippled the netting, but it had gone into the side netting. The equaliser was not long in coming though. In the 77th minute Lewis Collins made a great run down the right and put over a cross, which flicked up off a defender, and as the ball came down Ollie Lawford got his head to the ball to level the scores at 2-2. Leverstock were well on top now, and almost took the lead within a minute as Siemienczuk was clean through but his shot was saved by Alley. In the 82nd minute Siemienczuk ran onto a pass from Beach and nodded the ball past Alley, but with the net gaping he lost his balance and couldn’t get his shot on target. The goal was coming, though, and it arrived in the 87th minute. Again it was good work from Collins on the right, and his cross flicked off the head of a defender and dropped for Seale, who connected with a superb first-time volley to put his side into a 3-2 lead. There could have been another goal in the first minute of stoppage time, but Siemienczuk was denied by a brilliant save by Alley. Leverstock had to hold out through seven minutes of stoppage time, but they did so successfully to register a very impressive win, which was their sixth win from their last seven away league matches. It has been Leverstock’s away form which is mainly responsible for them sitting at the lofty heights of fifth in the table at the end of 2021. Leverstock Green (0) 3 (Siemienczuk 71, Lawford 77, Seale 87) Team: 1. Alfie Bonfield, 2. Harry Bonner (12. Rio Beach 64 mins), 3. James Hall (14. Ollie Cox 69 mins), 4. Dan Weeks, 5. Holmer Green FC History Originally founded in 1908, Holmer played initially in The Chesham and District League. Matches were played at Campbell’s Meadow, (now the Rosetti Estate), close to a tennis racket factory. Sometime before 1934 the Club moved to Holmer Green Common and set up headquarters in The Bat and Ball. In 1934 the Club switched to The Wycombe Combination League. The first trophy won by Holmer Green was The Chesham Charity Cup in 1939, the first of 28 Cups and Championships won thus far by the 1st XI. The early 70’s saw the start of a very successful thirty years in the Club’s history. Holmer Green moved to their present ground, Watchet Lane, in 1975 when the new Holmer Green Sports Association pavilion was fully ready. Holmer won The Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup in 1976-77. Senior Status was thus achieved and since then the Club has striven to play at the highest level possible for a strictly amateur club. The Club, through current President John Anderson, was heavily involved in the moves that set up The Chiltonian League in 1984. That League embraced clubs from no less than six different counties. Holmer had been very successful in the Chiltonian, and believed that a move to a better-run league, where the clubs were encouraged to improve facilities, should be the next step. The Chiltonian were reluctant to lose their “flagship” club and tried to stop the move to the South Midlands League. Not until August 1995 did Holmer Green, through the FA’s appeal system, successfully, switch Leagues. This move gave Holmer Green the impetus to finally erect a Stand, now called The Don Want Stand in honour of their former long-serving groundsman who still helps out with his time and expertise, on a regular basis. In 2014 Don was presented with some mementos to mark his 50 years with the Football Club. Premier Division status was achieved in 1999 after winning the Senior Division twice in four seasons, being 2nd and 4th in between. Floodlights were erected. Centenary events started with a visit from a full Wycombe Wanderers team in July 2007 when the ground record of over 800 was recorded. In 2008 the Senior Club formally merged with Holmer Green Minors FC to become “One Club” and this occasion coincided with the new Club as a whole being named “ Club of the Year 2008” by Bucks & Milton Keynes Sports Partnership. Season 2008-09 was Holmer’s 10th successive one in the Premier Division. After an unexpectedly long stay in the Premier Division, Holmer Green was demoted to Division One for season 2009-10, despite avoiding the two relegation positions.
Work immediately began to regain the “F” Grading required for Step 5 football to return to Watchet Lane. The 1st XI won the First Division by three points in 2009-10 losing only 3 of 40 games. The coveted “F” Grading was achieved again in 2011. Manager Chris Allen, who was appointed in 2009, kept the regained Step 5 status for another incredible nine seasons before stepping down in May 2019, with Holmer having gained enough points by early March. By this time the Club had been moved, most unwillingly, into the geographically ridiculous Hellenic League. Chris’ successor, Dave Lynch, resigned after a poor start in August and September 2019. Matt Stowell succeeded Lynch, and results turned before the season was ended due to Covid-19. Matt continued to rebuild for 2020-21 with a seventh place when the season was again terminated early. The club were very happily returned to The Spartan South Midlands League in Summer 2021, with Matt continuing in charge. This return “home” means local games with Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, Tring Athletic, Harefield United, Leighton Town, Leverstock Green, Oxhey Jets, and Dunstable Town.
