Alan Lee Reporting SSML Premier Division Leverstock Green 2 – Baldock Town 0

After five straight seasons of losing their opening league game, Leverstock Green finally got a season off to the ideal start as they opened 2021/22 with a deserved win over Baldock Town. Fergus Moore and his management team took control of the side for the first time in a competitive game, and their team turned in a disciplined display, scoring twice in the first half and keeping the visitors at bay in the second half for a clean sheet. After a number of sin bins and red cards, the game ended with just 18 players on the pitch. It was the new-look Leverstock side who had the first chances in the game. In the 16th minute Mikkel James found himself clean through, and tried to take the ball round Baldock keeper Cameron Groom, but Groom just about got a boot in to deny James. Five minutes later James was in again and got the ball past Groom, but it was cleared off the line by Daniel Harper. On 25 minutes Groom was forced into action again to tip a cross from Paul Marks over the bar. Baldock did not clear the resulting corner, and in the ensuing scramble James appeared to be brought down, but the referee played on. However, seconds later Isiah Noel-Williams was brought down and this time the referee awarded the penalty. Kian Wilkes drilled the spot kick into the bottom corner despite Groom getting a hand to it to put Leverstock into a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. Leverstock keeper Alfie Bonfield was brought into action for the first time in the 38th minute, saving a low shot from Dylan Logan. It proved to be a crucial save, as a minute later Leverstock were at the other end as Noel-Williams went on a mazy run into the box, beating two defenders before sliding the ball past Groom to put Leverstock into a 2-0 lead. The Green side took that lead into the second half and almost increased it on 57 minutes when James flicked on Bonfield’s goal kick into the path of Lewis Collins, who tried to lob Groom but didn’t get the ball high enough to beat the keeper. For much of the second half the Leverstock team had to dig deep as Baldock built up a sustained spell of pressure. On 69 minutes Rio Beach made a great tackle in the box to deny Baldock a chance. Baldock were reduced to ten men on 76 minutes when Charlie Rome was sent to the sin-bin for dissent. Bonfield made his best save of the game three minutes later to turn away a shot from Jude White after the striker had burst through the middle. In the 83rd minute Baldock’s ranks were further reduced when skipper Josh Furness was sin-binned, and a minute later yet another sin-bin saw them down to eight men for a short time before Rome returned to put them back up to nine. Leverstock sub Elgeniy Daalberg was denied a third goal in the 87th minute as his shot from a narrow angle was saved by Groom at the near post. As the game went into stoppage time it looked like Leverstock were a matter a minutes away from claiming the win, but then a bad tackle from Daalberg sparked a mass brawl. After the dust had settled, the referee began dispensing cards, and there was a red for both sides, Daalberg for the tackle and Jude White for retaliation, reducing Baldock back to eight men. There was also a yellow card for each side, with Steve Hawes the Green recipient. In the end almost ten minutes of stoppage time were played before the referee blew the final whistle to herald an excellent three point start for the Leverstock side. Alan Lee Reporting FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Stanway Rovers 1 – Leverstock Green 0 Leverstock Green’s Emirates FA Cup campaign ended at the first hurdle as they were beaten 1-0 at Stanway Rovers in Saturday’s Extra Preliminary Round tie. It was a tight match with little to choose between the sides, and in the end it was decided by an unfortunate error from young Leverstock keeper Alfie Bonfield. It was a game that was played in intermittent periods of heavy rain. The first glimpse of goal for the Green side came in the 7th minute when Kian Wilkes delivered a great cross, which dropped for Isiah Noel-Williams at the far post, but it was a difficult chance, which he couldn’t keep on target. Mekhi Hyde was just over the bar four minutes later with a shot for Stanway, and both Ryan Carruthers and Mikkel James had efforts which went wide before Ethan Mooney had the game’s first effort on target in the 39th minute, his free kick being tipped over the bar by home keeper Adrian Aldridge. The game was goalless after what had been a somewhat scrappy first half, and the second half opened with more torrential rain. Three minutes into the second half Noel-Williams was denied by Aldridge, who saved his shot from a narrow angle, and two minutes later Noel-Williams brought an even better save out of Aldridge with a low shot after a run across the edge of the penalty area. Stanway had the closest effort of the game so far on 62 minutes, as Ezequil Franchi struck a rasping shot from distance that rattled the Leverstock post. On 68 minutes a pass from Wilkes put Mooney in with a chance, but again Aldridge was there to save Mooney’s shot. The decisive moment of the game came in the 72nd minute. A Stanway free kick from outside the box was initially cleared, but when the ball was crossed in again, Bonfield appeared to have claimed it, but then lost the ball out of his hands. Stanway substitute Bleu Molloy pounced quickly to punish the error, heading home from close range. Molloy could have sealed the game in the 79th minute when he had a clear shot from in front of goal, but pulled his shot wide. Leverstock were still in the game, and pressed hard over the closing minutes, but the Stanway defence held firm to prevent them creating any chances, and it is Stanway who progressed by the narrowest of margins to host Enfield in the next round. Leverstock Green 1. Alfie Bonfield, 2. Adrian Pitfield, 3. Rio Beach, 4. Dan Weeks, 5. Brima Johnson, 6. Ryan Carruthers (20. Scott McGleish 79 mins), 7. Ethan Mooney, 8. Kian Wilkes, 9. Mikkel James (17. Rawn Seale 61 mins), 10. Isiah Noel-Williams, 11. Lewis Collins (14. Elgeniy Daalberg 69 mins). Subs not used: 12. Ollie Lawford, 16. Paplamin Jawara, 18. Tom Justin, GK. Harpenden Town FC History Harpenden Town Football Club was formed as Harpenden F.C. 1891 playing in both the Mid-Herts and Herts County Leagues, winning the Mid-Herts on numerous occasions. Town was added in the 1908. Town climbed into the South Midlands League in 1957 winning the Premier Division title in 1962 and 1965 and in 1968 adding both the Herts Charity Shield & the South Midlands League Shield to their trophy haul. Season 1990-91 saw a significant investment in the club with the erection of the Centenary Stand, and, the installation of floodlights. The Club obtained entry to the FA Cup for the first time in 1998 and is a regular contender in the FA Vase. After a turbulent period resulting in relegation from the Premier Division in 2000 and 2005. At the start of the 2006/07 season a new committee was in place their first move was to gain the Football Associations Charter Standard Accreditation, which ensured the correct structures were in place. On the field the club also required stabilising and it was felt that more local community approach was needed so links with Harpenden Colts were established to bring through local young players ensuring a pathway from under sevens to adult football. Success soon followed and after only one year Harpenden Town was named Herts FA Charter Standard club of the year thanks to their community work, which included hosting an anti racism event, an adult seven aside competition, free coaching offered to schools/junior teams and the development of women’s football through the Herts youth games. In 2015 having successfully obtained £100k of funding the clubs facilities were refurbished, this made a positive impact on the club and its profile. 2018-19 was the last for our very successful manager Danny Plumb. He achieved our promotion to the Premier Division in 2016-2017, the club finishing in 3rd place and winning the League Cup in the following season. Over the last two seasons the club has established a strong position in the Spartan South Midlands Premier League with a stable group of enthusiastic coaches led by Micky Nathan. For the first time we are able to run First, Reserve and U18 squads Celebrating our 130th year we have been able to install state of the art LED floodlights and thanks to our expanding group of volunteers have made some steady improvements to the clubs facilities. Alan Lee Reporting SSML Premier Division Aylesbury Vale Dynamos 1 - Leverstock Green 4

Leverstock Green continued their winning start to their league season, as they turned in a superb display to come away from Aylesbury Vale Dynamos with a deserved 4-1 win to make it two wins from two games. It’s very early days, but Fergus Moore’s side sit at the top of the league after this result which featured a master class from veteran forward Scott McGleish and four classic poachers’ finishes from two young strikers. Ollie Lawford came into the side for his first competitive action of the season, and was soon getting on the end of chances. In the 15th minute McGleish flicked on a goal kick into Lawford’s path, but his shot from a narrow angle was just over the bar. Four minutes later a pass from Kian Wilkes put Lawford in again, but this time his shot was wide. A great move in the 24th minute ended with McGleish playing a pass in behind the defence for Isiah Noel-Williams, who again couldn’t get an effort on target, his shot going inches over the bar. The shots continued to come, with Ethan Mooney shooting a yard wide from the edge of the box on 30 minutes, McGleish hitting a shot wide a minute later, and again on 39 minutes from a free kick. However, in the 43rd minute Mooney made a superb break down the left wing, outpacing the chasing defenders before delivering a cross into the six yard box where Lawford was there to shoot home the opening goal and send Leverstock into the break with a 1-0 lead after a half in which they had been well on top. Leverstock continued to dominate in the second half, and added a second goal on 52 minutes. Kian Wilkes delivered a low cross from near the bye-line, and Lawford met it with a glancing sidefoot to score his second of the match. McGleish left the action on 68 minutes after a fantastic shift, and was replaced by Mikkel James, who wasted no time in getting involved. Within two minutes of coming on, James slid in to meet a cross from NoelWilliams but just failed to make contact. However, the ball ran through to Mooney, who crossed it back in and this time James was there with a glancing header to put Leverstock into a 3-0 lead. The home side had produced little to trouble Leverstock keeper Juliusz Pazio on his debut, but on 82 minutes they pulled a goal back. Chris Shennan pulled the ball back from the bye-line for Callum Shortt to finish from close range. However, Leverstock restored their three-goal lead three minutes later. Paplamin Jawara cleared the ball from his own box to find Noel-Williams, who set off on a run from the halfway line before threading a pass through for James to slot home his second of the match, completing a final scoreline of 4-1. Be aware of your own personal health. If you show any of the Covid-19 symptoms you must stay at home, inform NHS Test and Trace and seek medical advice. Be responsible. Read the guidance provided by The FA and by your club so that you are aware of the changes to the game and what is expected of you. This will include things like being prepared to wash your own kit, bringing your own labelled water bottle and being aware of changes to meet-up times. Practise good hygiene. Wash your hands regularly and before, during and after a game. Where possible maintain social distancing. This won’t always be possible in a competitive match environment (for example when tackling an opponent) and that is acceptable. However, before, and after a game you should maintain social distancing. Use the extra dugout chairs for social distancing Support NHS Test and Trace. You’re likely to be asked to provide your details so that in the event of a Covid-19 outbreak those potentially infected can be traced. This is to everyone’s benefit so please co-operate. Do not spit. Spitting and the rinsing out of mouths is now a recognised risk to health and must not be done. Avoid shouting or raising your voice if face to face with other players. After the game. Be aware that other users may be waiting to use the facilities. Changing rooms and showers are likely to be closed and any socialising must follow the Government’s guidance on social distancing.
