THE BUILDBASE FA VASE Second Round

Saturday’s Buildbase FA Vase Second Round ties saw two SSML sides achieving their best progress in the competition by reaching the Third Round for the first time, Shefford Town & Campton (in their FA Vase debut) produced an excellent performance in their all SSML tie against Premier Division Risborough Rangers, the Division One side coming from a goal down before winning on penalties after a 1-1 draw while New Salamis saw off visiting Ipswich Wanderers 2-0. There were two ties that saw former SSML clubs hosting current day members and accounts on both of these games can be found later in these Ramblings. Elsewhere it was a late stoppage time goal that ended the hopes of Flackwell Heath as visiting Combined Counties League side Guildford City progressed while Harefield United gallant fight back against Combined Counties League side Berks County saw the visitor edging it by the odd goal in five. Sunday’s action saw plenty of late drama in an all SSML tie, Hadley finding themselves 0-2 down with six minutes remaining at Baldock Town before a brace from Ofori took the tie to a penalty shoot-out which the visitors won 5-4. Three more First Round ties in the newly named Gladwish Challenge Trophy took place on Saturday, two of which were all Division Two affairs with the other being a Premier Division v Division Two contest. Leverstock Green avoided any shocks when entertaining Tring Corinthians AFC, the Premier Division side running out comfortable 5-0 winners against their Division Two opponents. Bovingdon were also amongst the goals in their ‘local derby’ tie with Sarratt, the hosts winning 4-0 while the other tie again a ‘local derby’ saw Pitstone & Ivinghoe booking their passage with a 2-0 over visiting Aston Clinton. With the top two involved in FA Vase action the attention turned to third placed Harpenden Town to try and close the gap at the top as they travelled to Ardley United, but it was not to be as the hosts recorded back to back 3-0 home wins. At the other end of the table Crawley Green remain bottom after going down by the odd goal in three at home against Aylesbury Vale Dynamos while Holmer Green hoover above the relegation places after they were beaten at home by Milton Keynes Irish, the visitors winning 2-1. Arlesey Town, still under temporary management, were the Premier Division biggest winnings on the day with a 5-1 success against visiting London Colney while in the days other action Dunstable Town recorded back to back league wins with a solitary goal success at home against Oxhey Jets. Leverstock Green moved up to third as they enjoyed a 3-0 success at Milton Keynes Irish while elsewhere Dunstable Town drew 2-2 with visiting Holmer Green. HERTS SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP Second Round Wednesday saw great scenes at Rothamsted Park as Harpenden Town progressed in the Herts Senior Challenge Cup with a penalty shoot-out win over Stevenage, the tie had finished goalless with the hosts reduced to ten men with 16 minutes left following the dismal of Jack Woods a recent signing from Colney Heath. Twenty-four hours earlier Tring Athletic hosted Hitchin Town and two goals in each half saw the Southern Premier Division Central League side booked their place in the quarterfinals. Nick Payne is fund raising for Breast Cancer

In 2017, Dawn was diagnosed with breast cancer and successfully underwent chemotherapy. Sadly following a reoccurrence she passed away on 28th August 2019. We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up or fight like hell. Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Gladwish Challenge Trophy Round 1 Leverstock Green 5 – Tring Corinthians 0 Saturday 20th November 2021 Leverstock Green won their first cup-tie of the season as they progressed to the Second Round of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy with a 5-0 win over Division Two side Tring Corinthians at Pancake Lane. The visitors suffered a blow 15 minutes before kick-off when their goalkeeper Dennis Orlov suffered a broken finger during the warm-up. With no replacement keeper available, coach Ian Plumridge had to go in goal, and the kick-off was delayed for ten minutes to allow Plumridge more time to warm up. Leverstock were expected to win this tie against opponents struggling two divisions below them, but Tring put up a battling display. In the 5th minute the Green side went close when Kian Wilkes headed just over the angle from Scott McGleish’s free kick, but two minutes later it was Alfie Bonfield who had to make the first save of the match as Tring broke away and Tom Banks hit a shot on target. Mikkel James went close twice during the first half, firstly in the 19th minute when he got a sidefoot to Wilkes’ cross, but it drifted just wide of the far post, and again on 26 minutes when he was clean through but lifted his shot just over the bar. Plumridge had some saves to make, but mostly from shots or headers that were straight at him. Just when Leverstock might have been getting frustrated at not having found the net, they made the breakthrough in the 36th minute. James delivered a low cross from the right touchline and Ollie Lawford turned the ball home from close range. The single goal was all that the Green side had to show for their first half display, but they started the second half strongly. Elgeniy Daalberg had a good chance inside the opening 20 seconds but ballooned it over the bar. In the 48th minute Leverstock doubled their lead from a good counter-attack. Lewis Collins brought the ball before, exchanged passes with Lawford then ran through to shoot past Plumridge. It could have been three a minute later when Collins repaid the favour by putting Lawford through, but Plumridge saved with his legs. The third goal eventually arrived in the 62nd minute. Plumridge saved a shot from Ethan Mooney but could only parry it into the air. As the ball came down Lawford went up with the keeper and knocked the ball down before shooting home the loose ball. Plumridge felt he had been fouled, but the referee gave the goal. In the 70th minute Plumridge denied Lawford his hat-trick, saving his shot from close range from Mooney’s cross. However, a minute later Mooney got up to head home Paplamin Jawara’s corner for the fourth goal. Lawford was through again in the 76th minute and was again denied by Plumridge’s legs, and six minutes later a pass from Mooney put Rawn Seale through, but his shot was straight at Plumridge. The fifth goal was finally added in the 88th minute as Adrian Pitfield played the ball forward and Mooney shot home his second goal of the game. In the end it was a comfortable win, but credit is due to the Tring side for their performance, and they had their share of attempts on goal during the second half. Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Milton Keynes Irish 0 - Leverstock Green 3 Tuesday 23rd November 2021 Leverstock Green got back to winning ways in the league as they turned in a superb performance to win a difficult away game 3-0 at Milton Keynes Irish. Fergus Moore’s side dominated the game with a tough, hard-working performance and it was a fully deserved win capped by three goals of the highest quality. Leverstock started the game strongly, and in the 8th minute Paplamin Jawara floated in a free kick which found Dan Weeks, but his header went over the bar. On 11 minutes Lewis Collins pulled out a cross which was met by Rawn Seale with a glancing header that was heading for the corner of the net until home keeper Jack Taylor pulled off a great save. Taylor saved well again in the 20th minute to prevent an own goal deflecting in off one of his defenders. In the 27th minute Leverstock finally got the goal their football had deserved. Ryan Carruthers, who only started the game due to Kian Wilkes felling unwell during the warm-up, threaded a superb pass which put Collins in behind the last defender, and Collins finished confidently with a first-time shot past Taylor. The home side came into the game more during the later stages of the first half. On 33 minutes Alfie Bonfield saved with his legs to deny George Boland, who turned and shot from close range, and five minutes later Bonfield again kept out a close range effort from Boland. On 39 minutes Taylor was almost embarrassed as a long-range effort from Jawara slipped out of his hands and bounced behind him, but he just about recovered to grab the ball before it crossed the line. Leverstock took their slender lead into the second half where, if anything they were even more dominant than the first half. The Green defence did not allow the home side a single effort at goal during the half. The second goal arrived in the 62nd minute after a run at goal by Seale was ended by a foul challenge five yards outside the box. Jawara stepped up to take the free kick and, not for the first time this season, delivered the goods as he floated the ball over the wall and into the top corner of the net for a superb strike. Irish were reduced to ten men in the 72nd minute as Scott Belgrove received a straight red card for downing Paul Marks in an off-the-ball incident that was spotted by the linesman. With three minutes to go Dan Pett was the victim of a foul challenge a few yards outside the left edge of the penalty area. Jawara stepped up again, and although this one was a much narrower angle than the first one, he produced another outstanding strike to curl the ball over Taylor into the corner of the net for a third Green goal. There should have been a fourth goal in the 90th minute when a pass from Seale set up a very presentable chance for Ollie Cox on the edge of the box, but he couldn’t keep his shot under the bar. A late winner from Brandon Bowie saw the under15s beat Leighton Town 2-1 in Sunday’s EJA game at Pancake Lane. The visitors took the lead in the 27th minute, but the lead only lasted for a minute as Leverstock equalised through Jamie McIntosh. The winner came in the 85th minute as Brandon Bowie slotted a shot past the keeper.

HAREFIELD UNITED FC History The club was formed in 1868, making it the oldest club in Middlesex. In their formative years they played under such names as Harefield Victoria and Breakspear Institute in the local Uxbridge Leagues before merging with Harefield FC in 1934 to become Harefield United, playing in the Uxbridge and District League. By 1947 the club had joined the Great Western Combination, playing at Taylors Meadow and winning the league once in the 1950-1 season. In 1964 the club moved to the Parthenon League, winning the league at the first attempt. They then joined the Middlesex League two seasons later where they stayed for five seasons, winning the league title four times and the league cup twice. In 1967-8 the club celebrated their centenary by moving to their present ground at Preston Park in Harefield, joining the Spartan League Senior Section in the 1971-2 season, staying there for four seasons, making their debut in the FA Vase in 1974-5 before progressing to Division Two of the Athenian League for the 1975-6 season. The club also made their debut in the FA Cup in 1979-80. The Athenian League folded in 1984, the year the Hares won the League Cup under manager Nobby Carpenter, making them still the current holders! The club then moved to the Isthmian League Division Two North for two seasons, then spent seven years in Division Two South before being relegated to Division Three where they stayed until after the 1996-7 season when lack of funds for ground improvements meant the club had to move back to the Spartan League. A year later they became founder members of the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division South, until it was renamed Division One where they finished runners up and won the League Cup, before playing in the Spartan Premier where they remained until being relegated to Division One at the end of 2015-6. This spell was the most successful in the club’s history winning the Challenge Trophy in 2002-3 and the Premier League Cup the following season when they were also runners up in the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup. Under manager Stuart Leavy the Hares were league runners up twice, in 2006-7 and again in 2008-9 when they missed out on promotion to the Ryman League by one goal difference to Biggleswade Town. In 2002 Harefield United Youth FC was formed with teams from the former Denham Youth FC, the club currently fielding over twenty teams of all ages and levels from Under 7s to Under 21s, Sunday League teams, Under 18s Allied Counties, reserves and first team with some players having progressed all the way through the ranks. In 2010 the club won the National Award for Groundsman Of The Year for Steps 5 and 6, some achievement for a club with no groundsman and the pitch maintained by volunteers. At the beginning of the 2016-7 season the Hares start life in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One looking to bounce back at the first attempt under manager Jason Shaw’s second season in charge. In season 2017-18 the Hares promoted reserve team coach Brian Keeley to Head of Youth Development with former first team player Ben Payne as his assistant, looking to expand the thriving youth programme further at Harefield. In 2018 United celebrated their 150th year of football in Harefield as a community club promoting senior, junior, Sunday and women's football. The same season 2018-9 Manager Jason Shaw gained promotion in his fourth campaign by going unbeaten all season, only dropping four points and winning 34 consecutive matches, also winning the Middlesex Premier Cup against a strong Cockfosters side. “The Invincibles” started the 2019-20 season back in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division, a return to Step 5 football, a season that was expunged due to the Covid 19 virus. The Hares introduced a ladies side for the first time, managed by former Reserve team coach Vince Bairda with his coach Brian Keeley, and were looking good for promotion before the season was curtailed. Jason Shaw now looks to begin his sixth season with the club with the Hares playing Step 5 football again, here’s to the next 150 years!
