Crawley Green FC History

The History of Crawley Green FC - Saturday Side Crawley Green Sports & Social Club was formed in November 1989 after arsonists caused the virtual destruction of the present building. Members of Stopsley Harriers, The Wyvern and Ramridge Rangers Sunday Football Clubs amalgamated to form the present club and were successful in securing a 99-year lease from the Council. The New Club house was formally open on 19th June, 1992 by then Luton Town manager, David Pleat. The badge incorporates all the elements of the three founding clubs but also local history. The club badge was adopted in 1996 after many years of discussion. Maroon was the colour of the largest single club Ramridge Rangers, and it was adopted as the club colour. It is incorporated in the Club badge as the bar across the middle. Stopsley Harriers were well known for their red and blue quarters, whilst Wyvern Members were predominantly blue since their foundation. Both these colours are reflected in the badge. Crawley Green FC Saturday side was formed in 1993 after another local team, Somerset Tavern came under the Crawley Green umbrella. The club colour of maroon was adopted by the team. In 2018 Luton Town FC and Crawley Green FC further enhanced their club partnership with the announcement that Crawley Green FC will play their home games at The Brache training ground from season 2018-2019. Crawley Green, who are the only Luton based team to play at step 5 or above of the National League System, have been trying since 2008 to get permission to build a suitable stadium. Unfortunately, in that time they have failed to receive the support needed from Luton Borough Council, despite there being no cost involved for the Council. This decision has meant that they have had to ground share with Barton Rovers FC for 11 years now, to enable the team to continue to play at that level. This is a poor indictment of the Council’s attitude to football in Luton, considering that other major towns in Bedfordshire have at least one team each playing step 6 or above. Their lack of support in comparison to the likes of Biggleswade (3 teams), Bedford (2 teams), Dunstable (2 teams), Leighton Buzzard (1 team) and Kempston (1 team), means that even our local leagues have the ignominy of having to travel to local villages to host their cup finals. Luton recently installed a brand-new all-weather surface down at the training ground and to comply with national ground grading criteria Crawley Green will complete the remaining requirements. This will include new changing rooms, dugouts, turnstile and spectator standing area. Tony Talbot, Chairman of Crawley Green stated: “We would like to thank Gary Sweet and Kevan Platt and everyone at Luton Town FC for firstly affording us this opportunity and then their support in making this happen.

“In the past we have seen a number of ex-Crawley Green players go on to play for Luton, but our partnership has really continued to grow in recent years. It’s with great satisfaction for us that we are currently seeing James Justin starring for the first team. In addition, the recently transferred Tyreeq. Crawley Green FC History Bakinson and four of the current U18s team, Josh Neufville, Joe Mead, Ciaren Jones and Michael Shamalo all came through our youth system. “A town the size of Luton needs a successful professional club, as well as teams playing in the national league pyramid”. This gives our talented youngsters a pathway to development, without having to go outside the borough to develop. “In addition, underneath these clubs is a large community hub, which affords lots of youngsters the opportunity to play football. These community hubs ensure all young people have the opportunity to participate in football in a safe supportive environment, which preserves the dignity and respect of the individual regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, religion, disability, income and any other social deprivation. With Government statistics showing a concerning rise in childhood obesity throughout the UK, these community hubs encourage our children to stay active and engage in physical activity. This all helps promote health, self-confidence and importantly social cohesion, and hopefully leads to the wider benefits in raising standards.” Hatters chief executive Gary Sweet said: “We see ourselves as guardians of elite football in our region and part of that responsibility is to help – wherever possible – other local, aspirational clubs develop and thrive, staying at the core of their roots. “The challenges faced at Crawley Green were difficult and, with the great relationship we’ve had over the years, having recruited numerous young players from their excellent development structure, we’re proud to help Crawley Green retain a local home for their competitive games, just as we are happy to utilise our existing training facility at perhaps the only time when it won’t get used.” In recognition of his services to the community and sport, Crawley Green Sports & Social Club Chairman, Tony Talbot was awarded a BEM – British Empire Medal - in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List. Alan Lee Reporting Premier Division Leverstock Green 0 Colney Heath 1 Monday 2nd January 2023 Leverstock Green have suffered only two home defeats this season, and both of them have been to Colney Heath. With the visitors having had a managerial change between the two games, there were only a few players in common between the Colney side that won the Premier Division Cup tie in October, and the side that inflicted Leverstock’s first home league defeat of the season in this game. A week ago, against Tring Athletic it was the performance of Leverstock keeper Austin Byfield that won the point, but this time the boot was on the other foot as visiting keeper Liam Studley kept out the Green side with a number of superb saves. There were few chances in the early part of the game, and Leverstock’s bad luck with centre-backs continued as Alvin Kyeremeh had to be helped off the pitch with an injury in the 19th minute, to be replaced by Bobby Armstrong. Colney Heath had the better of the opening ten minutes, but Leverstock were on top towards the end of the half. They were denied a goal in the last minute of the half by the first of Studley’s great saves. George Mitchell-Gears got on the end of an Ibrahim Nagheeb free kick with a downward header, which Studley got down to save at the base of his post. Leverstock made a bright start to the second half, but they were forced into another change on 51 minutes when Elgeniy Daalberg replaced Mitchell-Gears. Controversially, the referee restarted play the instant that Daalberg had entered the pitch rather than allowing him to take up his position, and Colney Heath took advantage as a ball was played 60 yards forward to Alex Cathline, who made a powerful run at goal and struck a shot from outside the box which beat Byfield and put his side into a 1-0 lead. Brad Robinson was sin-binned as a result of protests about the goal, reducing Leverstock to ten men for ten minutes. Once they were back up to eleven the Green side had a number of chances, including a cross from Rio Beach which went just over the angle on 66 minutes and a header from Armstrong which went just over the bar two minutes later. On 76 minutes Ibrahim Nagheeb was fouled just outside the box and stepped up to take the free kick himself. His effort was on target but tipped over the bar by a great save from Studley. A minute later Ryan Carruthers had an effort cleared off the line. On 79 minutes Leverstock were again reduced to ten men, this time permanently as Luke Beckwith received a second yellow card. There was another free kick in a dangerous position on 84 minutes as Chris Blunden was brought down just outside the box. Blunden took the free kick and again it was on target, but Studley dived full length to turn it round the post. Colney Heath were then reduced to ten men as George Taban was sin binned. Leverstock continued to push forward as the game threatened to boil over in the closing minutes, and they were perhaps denied a couple more chances as the referee blew for full time after less than two minutes stoppage time, in a half that saw seven substition’s and a couple of injury stoppages among others. However, it was a second straight game without a goal, and Fergus Moore’s side will need to find their scoring touch again quickly when they travel to Cockfosters for their next game on Saturday. Alan Lee Reporting Premier Division Harpenden Town 0 Leverstock Green 3 Saturday 28th January 2023 After six postponements due to weather and 26 days without a game Leverstock Green finally returned to action, and they hit the ground running as they recorded an impressive 3-0 win at Harpenden Town. On a difficult sticky pitch freshly defrosted from the cold weather of the last two weeks, Leverstock showed their attacking prowess in the first half as they led 3-0 at the break, and defended superbly under pressure in the second half to maintain the win and the clean sheet. Skipper Dan Weeks returned to the side after a long injury layoff for his first game since September 6th. Leverstock took an early lead, and it was something of a gift from the home side. Their defence unwisely tried to play the ball across the face of their own box, and as it held up on the sticky surface, Radu-Mihai Stefanoaica nipped in to stab the ball home in for a 1-0 lead in the 4th minute. In the 13th minute Leverstock were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position just outside the box for a foul on Ibrahim Nagheeb, who got up to take the free kick himself, but couldn’t keep his effort under the bar. There was another great chance in the 18th minute. Stefanoaica chased a forward pass from Luke Durnin, while home keeper Alex Desmond came racing out of his goal, but missed the ball. Stefanoaica continued his run towards the empty net, but by the time he caught up with the ball the angle was narrow and his shot went into the side netting. Two minutes later Stefanoaica was denied again by a point blank save from Desmond. 16 year old Kurainashe Musanhi was in the starting lineup in place of the injured Rio Beach, and he brought a save out of Desmond with a cross from the left touchline that was drifting towards the top corner of the net until Desmond tipped it over. Nagheeb took the resulting corner, which was headed up in the air by Stefanoaica. As it came down, the Harpenden defenders were slow to react and Ethan Mooney nipped in to nod the ball home and put Leverstock 2-0 up in the 31st minute. It was then the turn of Green keeper Austin Byfield to show his quality, firstly tipping a shot from Daniel Westmore onto the bar in the 37th minute, and then getting down low at his post to turn away a shot from Jake Anthony a minute later. The game was still finely poised, but Leverstock added an important third a minute before the break. A pass from Elginey Daalberg found Stefanoaica out wide, and as he headed on a run into the box, he was brought down by a challenge just inside the box. The referee initially waved play on, but his assistant raised his flag. After a consultation between the two, the penalty was awarded and Stefanoaica took it himself to make it 3-0 in the 44th minute. The second half was a different story as Harpenden came out looking more determined and had the Leverstock goal under heavy pressure at times. In the 55th minute Byfield impressed again as he palmed a corner away and then instantly recovered to turn away an incoming header. Two minutes later Musanhi cleared off the line from one of the home side’s many corners. Leverstock still had chances themselves to increase their lead on the break, with Stefanoaica twice being denied by Desmond after being put through by Dan Pett in the 61st minutes and by Mooney in the 80th minute. Mooney had a chance himself in the 84th minute after a great pass from Nagheeb, but curled his shot just wide of the post. The game ended with Harpenden applying further pressure from yet more corners, but the Leverstock defence held firm thanks to a number of superb performances, none more so than MOM Luke Durnin – recently returned after a long injury break and playing his first full game since August. DIVISION ONE Just two games beat the weather in Division One, leaders Real Bedford FC continued to march on towards the title with a 3-1 home success against play-off hopefuls Northampton ON Chenecks while in the battle between two clubs just outside the play-off places Moulton FC climbed to seventh with a 5-0 win at sixth placed Eaton Socon, a result that would lead to the hosts management team stepping down some 24 hours later.

PREMIER DIVISION In the day’s only Premier Division fixture to beat the weather, fourth placed St Panteleimon defeated visiting third placed Crawley Green 4-0 to close the gap to just one point between them.

DIVISION ONE

Just four games beat the weather in Division One, with second placed Rugby Borough closing the gap at the top to twelve points following their 3-1 home success against Langford. Elsewhere Ampthill Town remain fifth after winning 6-2 at struggling Wellingborough Whitworth v Ampthill Town, Ampthill Town went three up in the first 10 minutes with goals from Sam Holmes (2m), Phil Draycott 7m) and Jamie Cerminara (10m). Nathan Heycock pulled one back from a corner and Kobi Bivens scored a penalty to make it 3-2 at the break. Amps secured the points after the break with goals from Holmes and a brace from Cerminara to complete his hat trick. In the battle for play-off places Northampton ON Chenecks won 3-1 at Eaton Socon while Moulton FC saw off visiting Winslow United 5-3.

NORTHANTS LES UNDERWOOD JUNIOR CUP Third Round Rushden & Higham United advanced into the quarter finals of the Les Underwood Junior Cup with a goal in each half against Corby Stewart & Lloyds, the game being switched to Corby following last week’s postponement.

DIVISION TWO

Milton Keynes College Football Academy and visitors Sarratt played out a 2-2 draw in the only Division Two game to beat the weather.

BEDS SENIOR TROPHY Second Round Leighton Town Development booked their place in the next round of the Beds Senior Trophy with a 2-0 win at Beds County League side Caldecote, both goals coming late in the game.

VICE PRESIDENTS CLUB 2022-23 Leverstock Green Football Club would like to thank the Vice Presidents for their help and assistance pledged for last season. Colin Bull, Peter Dennis, Jim Doble, Peter Frasier, Roger Stokes As in previous seasons the donations made by our Vice Presidents have assisted us in providing many improvements. Would you like to join, £25 will secure your place. Step 5 and Step 6 Promotion and Relegation Changes have been made to the promotion and relegation guidelines given in the summer for Step 5 of the FA’s National League System. This is due to vacancies that have arisen in the NLS for a variety of reasons. At Step 4, the 8 Clubs finishing 4th bottom and 2 clubs ending 3rd bottom with the highest PPG now do not have to take part in the Inter-Step Play-Offs. This leaves 6 eligible Step 4 Clubs for the Play-Offs and 16 eligible 2nd placed Clubs at Step 5. As a result, the Clubs finishing in 2nd position at Step 5 are ranked on PPG with the 10 highest being automatically promoted. The 6 remaining Step 4 Clubs and 6 remaining Step 5 Clubs are placed into geographical groupings and paired by PPG as per the Play-Off Criteria 12 Clubs finishing in the bottom two across Step 5 will now be reprieved from relegation ranked on PPG. It has to be noted that the above situation is the current position and could change if the Committee feels there is a valid reason in the best interest of the NLS.
