THE INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF ‘NOWT SO QUEER AS YORKSHIRE FOLK’ BY KAREN BROWNE Saturday 11th December
THE BUILDBASE FA VASE Third Round For SSML clubs the dream of a Wembley date in May in the Buildbase FA Vase was extinguished as all four remaining sides exited the competition however all can be proud of their achievements. Step 6 Shefford Town & Campton, in their FA Vase debut, were beaten by a last minute winner at Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division side Lakenheath, the underdogs found themselves 0-2 down at the break before fighting back to level before the cruel blow arrived. It was also a trip to Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division opponents for Hadley, the hosts winning this one 3-1. For New Salamis it was a chance to renew acquaintances with former SSML side London Lions (more on this one later in the ramblings), however the Step 6 hosts stunned their higher ranked opponents, winning 2-0. Elsewhere Tring Athletic hosted Essex Senior League side Saffron Walden Town and a solitary first half strike was enough for the visitors to progress in the competition. Full results and goalscorers are listed below. PREMIER DIVISION The title race remains the same with the top two both winning on Saturday, leaders Risborough Rangers returned home from their trip to Covid hit Harefield United with the three points secured following a 2-0 win while second placed Leighton Town saw off bottom club Crawley Green 4-1 at Bell Close. It was mixed fortunes for two of the other clubs chasing the title, fifth placed Leverstock Green overcame hosts Baldock Town by a solitary goal while fourth placed Harpenden Town returned from their trip to Flackwell Heath empty handed as the hosts edged the game by the odd goal in three. Elsewhere Milton Keynes Irish were beaten at home by Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, the visitors winning 2-1 and Oxhey Jets held on to defeat their guests Broadfields United 3-2. The day’s other action saw London Colney held 1-1 at home by Ardley United while Arlesey Town gave their new boss his first win with a 3-2 success at Holmer Green. Full results and goalscorers are listed below. DIVISION ONE No changes at the top as both the top two recorded wins yet again, leaders Stotfold were in ‘seventh heaven’ as they cast aside visiting Long Crendon 7-1 while second placed Winslow United were made to work hard at bottom club Irchester United, the Buckinghamshire club winning 2-0. At the bottom Burton Park Wanderers who were winless some two weeks ago recorded their second in the last three games as they edged out fellow strugglers Amersham Town 3-2 at home while Raunds Town picked up a useful point following a 1-1 home draw with Bedford. Elsewhere Wellingborough Whitworth climbed back up to fourth after seeing off visiting Letchworth Garden City Eagles 4-1 and Northampton Sileby Rangers enjoyed a 3-1 win at Penn & Tylers Green. The day’s other action saw Kidlington Reserves defeat visiting Langford by a solitary goal while Thame United Reserves and Rushden & Higham United battled out a 1-1 draw in Oxfordshire. Full results and goalscorers are listed below.

DIVISION TWO Table toppers Old Bradwell United romped to their biggest win since 25/01/20 (a 11-1 win at MK Gallacticos) as they swept aside hosts Sarratt 10-1, the defeat being Sarratt’s biggest since joining the SSML. Bovingdon remain second as they extended their recent run of unbeaten league outings with a hard fought 2-2 draw at Pitstone & Ivinghoe while Milton Keynes College Football Academy remain third after winning 5-3 at bottom club Tring Corinthians AFC. Codicote eased their re-election fears with a 3-2 win at Risborough Rangers Development, the winner coming with 11 minutes left. The day’s other action saw Eynesbury United edge out hosts Totternhoe by the odd goal in three. Full results and goalscorers are listed below. BERKS & BUCKS CHARLES TWELFTREES TROPHY Second Round Buckingham United’s journey in the Berks & Bucks Charles Twelftrees Trophy came to an end when they went down 0-2 in the Second Round at North Bucks & District League side Great Horwood. Full result and goalscorers (where known) are listed below. COMMITTEE AWAYDAYS SSMFL Board & Committee member Bob Flight was at Raunds Town on Saturday and sends this report – Bedford travelled up to Raunds hoping to continue their recent good run but had to settle for a draw in an incident packed match. Bedford started well but a long ball from Raunds saw their player out muscle the Bedford defender and round the keeper. However the Raunds forward was fouled by the keeper who received a straight red card. An outfield player took the keeper’s gloves but he could not stop the resulting penalty kick from hitting the back of the net. Thus Bedford were a man and a goal down after only 19 minutes. However Raunds, despite some good chances, could not capitalise on the extra man and the half ended with just the one goal lead. The second half saw Bedford play down the pitch and they dominated most of the half despite being a man short. However, Raunds looked dangerous on the break but failed to trouble the Bedford deputy keeper. Bedford could not get the vital goal although they had several very good opportunities to score. The eventual equaliser came out of the blue when a shot from almost the halfway line sailed over the Raunds keeper and into the home net on 69 minutes. Despite dominating the remainder of the game Bedford could not get the winner due to some poor finishing, some stout home defending, and a shot was cleared off the goal line, and very little luck in front of goal. There was just time for a brief altercation between the Bedford bench and an assistant referee which resulted in the Bedford manager being unfortunately sent off. Credit is due to both sets of players and officials who endured a rain soaked match and the Bedford players in particular who battled for three quarters of the game with ten men and stand in keeper to earn a vital away point. AND FINALLY Don’t forget that every Sunday afternoon the Non-League Show on Three Counties Radio (Herts, Beds & Bucks), a show all about local non-league football. Tuesday 14th December / Wednesday 15th December THE GLADWISH CHALLENGE TROPHY Second Round Three Premier Division sides fell victims to lower opposition in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy, firstly high flying Leighton Town lost to Ampthill Town, the hosts 3-0 up at the break survived a second half comeback to with 3-2, Holmer Green lost out in a penalty shoot-out at home against Long Crendon, the visitors winning 5-3 on spot kicks after a 2-2 draw and on Wednesday night Baldock Town were beaten 3-5 at home by Langford. Current Premier Division table toppers Risborough Rangers were given a scare by visiting Division Two side Pitstone & Ivinghoe before finally edging home by the odd goal in seven. Elsewhere Hadley eased past Broadfields United, the hosts killing off the tie with a four goal salvo in the first half before completing a 7-1 win while it was the lottery of penalties that saw the all Premier Division tie between Leverstock Green and Aylesbury Vale Dynamos settled, the hosts coming from behind at the break to equalize before advancing into the last sixteen 5-3 in the shoot-out. Tuesday’s other action saw Ardley United overcome struggling Division One side Amersham Town 2-0, Flackwell Heath netted four without reply at London Tigers while in an all Division One tie Wellingborough Whitworth edged out hosts Bedford by the odd goal in three. HERTS SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP Second Round Oxhey Jets were put to the sword by a ruthless performance from Step 3 side Royston Town in the Herts Senior Challenge Cup, the hosts led 7-0 at the interval before adding three further goals after the break on a night where everything they did turned to gold, the ‘Crows’ now face a home quarter-final tie with Harpenden Town. Full result and goalscorers are listed below. AND FINALLY Would you pay £18 for your half time Double Bacon Cheeseburger and Chips? Alan Lee Reporting Spartan South Midlands League Gladwish Challenge Cup 2nd Round Leverstock Green 1 – Aylesbury Vale Dynamos 1 Tuesday 14th December 2021 Leverstock Green faced a penalty shoot out for the third time this season, and for the first time they came out on top with a 5-3 win on penalties after a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes against Aylesbury Vale Dynamos in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy second round. Fergus Moore selected a much-changed side for this tie, including new signing Tomasz Siemienczuk from Hanwell Town. Despite conceding an early goal the side battled well all night in an entertaining and end-to-end cup-tie, and eventually got their reward. Leverstock made a bright start to the match, winning a couple of early corners, but it was the visitors who took the lead from their first corner in the 9th minute, as Brian Haule rose unchallenged in the six yard box to head home. Aylesbury went close to adding a second goal in the 18th minute when a shot from Alfi Touceda took a deflection which sent Juliusz Pazio the wrong way, but drifted just wide of the post. Leverstock had more of the ball in the first half but didn’t have the end product to show for it. On 34 minutes Scott McGleish played a one-two with Mikkel James but hit his shot wide. On 38 minutes Siemienczuk got on the end of a cross but headed over the bar. The visitors went close again in the last minute of the half when Montel Brown hit a shot, which beat Pazio but struck the post, and in stoppage time Siemienczuk got on the end of another cross from Harry Bonner, but headed wide from in front of goal. The Green side again made a good start to the second half. On 52 minutes a pass from skipper Ollie Cox gave Siemienczuk a ball to chase, but Aylesbury keeper James Weatherill came out of his goal and just got to the ball first. Three of the players rested from the starting line-up came off the bench during the second half. Lewis Collins was first to come on in the 55th minute, and three minutes later had a run at goal and hit a shot just wide. Ethan Mooney and Dan Pett joined the game in the 58th and 68th minutes respectively. In the 71st minute Leverstock won a free kick midway into the opposition half. Cox floated the ball into the box, and when it was knocked down, Siemienczuk was on hand to fire the ball home to level the scores with a goal on his debut. Aylesbury threatened to retake the lead. On 74 minutes Brown received the ball in the box with time and space to shoot, but Pazio pulled off a good save. Pazio saved again in the 83rd minute from Joe Chott after a short goal kick had put Leverstock in danger. Substitute Andrew Ofosu had a good chance a minute later but shot over the bar, and soon after Ofosu was clean through but Pazio slid in with a well-timed tackle to win the ball with his feet. Leverstock then went close to winning the game in stoppage time. A cross from Collins found Siemienczuk in the six-yard box, but Weatherill pulled off a great save to keep out his shot, and then saved again in a goalmouth scramble from the ensuing corner. The scores were still level at the final whistle, so the tie went to penalties. Leverstock buried their penalty shoot out jinx as Dan Pett, Ethan Mooney, Tomasz Siemienczuk, Kian Wilkes and Rio Beach were all successful with their kicks, and with Pazio having saved Aylesbury’s third kick from Ofosu, Beach’s kick proved to be the winner that sent Leverstock into the last 16 of the Gladwish Challenge Trophy. The match ball sponsor named Brad Robinson Man of the Match. Leverstock Green (0) 1 (Siemienczuk 71) Team: 1. Juliusz Pazio, 2. Harry Bonner, 3. Rio Beach, 4. Brad Robinson, 5. Scott McGleish, 6. Aylesbury Vale Dynamos FC History Aylesbury Vale Dynamos is an amalgamation of Aylesbury FC and Bedgrove Dynamos, two local clubs with a rich history in local football. Aylesbury FC enjoyed a long history in senior and junior football dating back to the 1930’s under the previous names of Aylesbury Vale, Haywood United, Belgrave, Stocklake and Negretti and Zambra FC, which was founded in the 1930’s by workers at the Negretti and Zambra company then based in London’s King Cross district. The company moved to the Stocklake Industrial Estate, Aylesbury. In 1949 and by the mid 50’s the premises had a bar, football, cricket and tennis facilities. The football club joined the Aylesbury District League in 1954. The social club changed its name to Stocklake when Negretti and Zambra sold the premises to the local council, who then leased the facilities; hence the different sections adopted the name Stocklake. Under the guidance of Chairman Mr. Ernie Crotty, the club gained many honours including runners up in ADL’s top divisions, before gaining intermediate status in the Wycombe and District League first and senior divisions. Sadly Ernie was killed in a road accident just before the club moved premises to the present location at Haywood Way in 1987. After gaining senior status and promotion to the Chiltern League in 1988, Stocklake enjoyed many further successes including Division One runners up in 1991, Premier Division and League Cup runners up the following season and Wycombe Senior Cup success in 1995. Cup success was also followed on in the following season, this time the Berks and Bucks Intermediate Cup being added to the trophy cabinet. Belgrave FC was formed in 1983 by Jim Sullivan who lived in nearby Belgrave Road. Jim had two sons who were passionate about football but were limited to where they could play, so formed a team himself with the help of neighbours Lynne and David Hatcher. By 1990, under the guidance of Danny Martone, Belgrave had grown to five youth teams providing football for over ninety boys from the Quarrendon and Haydon Hill areas of Aylesbury. 1996 saw the forming of two senior teams under the Belgrave FC name and by the turn of the millennium teams were represented at all levels from Under 8’s through to seniors, At the start of the 2000/2001 season, the senior Belgrave FC team was renamed Haywood United following an amalgamation with Stocklake FC with Danny Martone voted in as chairman of the new club. Haywood United joined the Spartan South Midlands League and won promotion into Division One after two seasons. Notable achievements during the 2001/2002 season included league awards for the best kept and most improved ground; this included the erection of floodlights and perimeter fencing, which Danny and his hard working committee fought hard to establish. Season 2002/2003 saw a difficult start in Division One, but with the arrival of manager Jon Franklin and his assistant Keith Walker just after Christmas, the club eventually consolidated finishing in 9th place. Promotion was gained to the South Midlands Premier Division the following year after a campaign that saw 23 wins, 7 draws and only 4 losses. Haywood United proved themselves capable of staying in the Premier Division after finishing 3rd in the 2004/2005 season in a campaign that only include one loss in the twenty matches after Christmas. The club also entered the FA Cup and Vase for the first time and won the Buckingham Charity Cup in 2006. Season 2006/2007 began with Haywood United becoming Aylesbury Vale FC and saw Keith Walker and Steve Gleinster take over as joint managers and steadily build a squad. This was recognised in the 2008/2009 season, under the management of Mark Eaton, with a good cup run in the FA Cup and FA Vase, winning three rounds in the FA Cup losing to Level 4 side Gosport after a replay, and losing out in the 4th round of the FA Vase to Leiston Town. . After Christmas the side suffered due to long-term injuries and finished mid table. May 2009 saw a major new development in a new semi professional side vote for a name change. Aylesbury Football Club was formed
under the leadership of Chairman Roger Dance and assisted by Vice Chairman Danny Martone Former Chairman Bill Harrison was made President of the club. Great success on the field of play was to follow, with the team having a fantastic run in the F.A. Cup. We were the last 'level five' team in the country to remain in the competition and were rewarded with a visit to Haywood Way for the F.A. Cup trophy, allowing the team, supporters and local people to get their hands on this famous trophy and make the most of this memorable occasion. We were finally knocked out of the competition by Wealdstone in a close game. A brave and superb display was witnessed by a bumper crowd of 800 plus. Meanwhile, away from the midst of F.A. Cup drama, our success continued, becoming 'Double Winners' Winning both the Spartan South Midland League and League Cup capping an extraordinary season and gaining promotion to the Southern League Division 1 Central. Steve Bateman took over in 2013/14, steered the club to safety in his first 6 months in charge. Then in 2014/15 with Bateman at the helm FC has their most successful season to date most successful to date. Playing at the highest level in the club’s history, the team finished third in the League, having been pushing for promotion all season and narrowly lost out in the semi final to Bedworth United having already beaten them twice in the league. The 2015/16 finished with a flourish as the club finished just outside the play off positions, but had the consolation of our first major Cup Final, beating Chesham United in the Berks & Bucks Cup at Windsor. Steve Bateman and his management team resigned at the end of the season and Danny Gordon & Gareth Risbridger took the helm, supported by Paul Bonham, Ryan Wiffin & Aaron Norman. Davis Haule took over from Gordon & Risbridger in December 2016, appointed brother Brian as his assistant and recruited former coaches Fraser McLachlan, Aaron Wiffin and added Ryan Collings to his back room staff for the 2017/18 season. In 2018/19 Scott Reynolds was appointed manager and when he resigned midway through the season it was left to Paul Bonham to take control but because of ground grading issues the Southern League made the decision to relegate the club and so after ten seasons in the Southern League. Phil Granville and Ben Gill were appointed midway through last season and will kick off the 2020/21 season again in the Spartan Premier Division. Steve Bateman was re appointed as manager in September 2021. Bedgrove Dynamos Alf Buckland, a resident of Finmere Crescent, formed Bedgrove Dynamos in 1968. It was created to fill a void in activities for boys within the Bedgrove area on the south side of Aylesbury. In 1980, Dave Bayliss became involved when he brought his Cub side to the Bedgrove Park. The teams amalgamated and Dave went on to be the chairman for 21 years, stepping down in the year 2000. Within two years and barely a full strip between them, they managed not only to win the Under 12's Aylesbury & District League (ADL), but went on to win the 13's & 14's league in consecutive years and, by which time, they now had four teams at various age groups. Over the years the club has grown and has won many tournaments and trophies, especially at county level. Many teams have toured abroad and the club has also entertained boys from Europe and America. We can boost that we are the only boys club to have a club pennant on display in Barcelona's trophy room. At the start of the season 2001/02 the club was the largest junior club in the Aylesbury area, running teams from under 8's through to under 18's. At the end of the season 2001/02 the club managed to win the coveted Berks and Bucks Cup at under 14's, the Mayor's Cup at under 12's, represented in two other cup finals, won 3 league titles, gained 6 promotions in total and all teams finished in the top 6 to the fair play awards for their respective leagues. In the last 20 seasons across the age groups the club has won 25 divisional titles, and runners up 20 times. In 2019 two became one when the sides amalgamated with the intention of allowing the youth of the town to progress through junior football to youth and then adult football and play at the highest possible level.

Be aware of your own personal health. If you show any of the Covid-19 symptoms you must stay at home, inform NHS Test and Trace and seek medical advice. Be responsible. Read the guidance provided by The FA and by your club so that you are aware of the changes to the game and what is expected of you. This will include things like being prepared to wash your own kit, bringing your own labelled water bottle and being aware of changes to meet-up times. Practise good hygiene. Wash your hands regularly and before, during and after a game. Where possible maintain social distancing. This won’t always be possible in a competitive match environment (for example when tackling an opponent) and that is acceptable. However, before, and after a game you should maintain social distancing. Use the extra dugout chairs for social distancing Support NHS Test and Trace. You’re likely to be asked to provide your details so that in the event of a Covid-19 outbreak those potentially infected can be traced. This is to everyone’s benefit so please co-operate. Do not spit. Spitting and the rinsing out of mouths is now a recognised risk to health and must not be done. Avoid shouting or raising your voice if face to face with other players. After the game. Be aware that other users may be waiting to use the facilities. Changing rooms and showers are likely to be closed and any socialising must follow the Government’s guidance on social distancing.
