FOR A GREAT BARBECUE Writer / Abigail Hake . Photography Provided
Here are a few tips to help you have a stellar barbecue that will impress your friends and family this outdoor season.
1. READY THE FOOD
It’s fun to have friends over. And it’s even more fun to be able to enjoy time with those friends when they are there. Try to have almost everything done before they arrive, especially the food. Main course items like hamburgers and hot dogs can be grilled while enjoying a drink and talking with friends outside, but prepare as much beforehand as possible to save your sanity.
WestfieldMag.com / SEPTEMBER 2020 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 5
2. M AKE IT A POTLUCK
Another way to save yourself some time and peace of mind is to ask a few friends to bring side dishes. Not only will this save you time (and money) but it will also create a great array of offerings for all your friends. Those bringing dishes probably won’t make what you would normally make and it gives your party different options! This is nice to do for those who have food allergies and sensitivities too.
3. D ON’T FORGET THE DETAILS
We all know that we want some easy clean up at the end of a long, hot day. But nothing makes your guests feel more special than the tiny details. Think about trying non-disposable plates and flatware instead. Look for melamine picnic dishes with liners - they are usually inexpensive and are sure to make your backyard barbecue stand out! Then take a quick minute to wrap silverware bundles in napkins. Add a handwritten tag with a fun song or the names of your guests. They are sure to love these small details and tell their other friends all about your party.
4. S NACKS, SNACKS, SNACKS
Snacks are super important. Especially if you are going to be cooking the main course once the guests arrive. Make sure to have dips and finger foods so everyone can snack while they catch up. Also, make sure to have foods that are great for being outside. Cut watermelon, fruits and veggies and chips and salsa are always crowd pleasers and don’t take a lot of effort.
5. T RY A FUN COCKTAIL
Whip up a big batch of Moscow Mules or Sangria for your guests. These easy drinks with easy garnishes still bring a touch of something special, setting your party apart! Offer mocktails or soda and water for those who don’t drink, too. If you are looking for something that can work for both, check out Tailored Toddies.
6. DECORATIONS
Throw up some decorative lights outside. This simple step can really go a long way. And when the sun goes down, you’ll have a beautiful ambiance that is sure to impress your guests! Also, layered tablecloths on the outdoor tables can give a warm feel as well. Just takes your party up a notch and an easy one at that. You can also leave them up all year round!
7. CITRONELLA
We all know mosquitos can really ruin a good thing. Make sure to grab some extra citronella candles for the evening. Not only will they keep those pesky bugs away but they’ll add to the ambiance of your outdoor lighting too! And, just in case, grab a couple different types of bug spray for your guests to use if they’d like.
8. YARD GAMES
There are so many yard games out there to play. Party favorites include Bocce Ball, Cornhole and Giant Jenga and most can be found at your local Target or Walmart. The best thing about all of these is that they are enjoyable to both watch and play. They keep everyone engaged and excited throughout the afternoon or evening!
9. S KIP DESSERTS & MAKE S’MORES
Load up the fire-pit with some logs and take it back to old campfire style. Roast up some S’mores and enjoy! Offer fun extras like peanut butter, Reese’s cups or candied bacon to create some different recipes. Everyone loves sitting around a fire on a cool night, especially at the end of a great party.
10. H AVE A BACK-UP PLAN
Listen, we all know that the day we have a big event, we don’t want it to rain. But unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that won’t happen. Don’t break the bank or anything but just make sure you have a plan for if it does start storming in the middle of the party. This might mean making sure the garage is cleaned out or asking a couple of friends to throw some extra folding chairs in their trunk. The best part of the day will be being with friends, even if you have to get a little cozy inside if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

SANDERS GLEN ASSISTED LIVING 334 S Cherry St. Westfield, IN 46074

Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Kerch Creative
Known for its warm and welcoming culture, Sanders Glen Assisted Living may have modified its daily operations, but not the spirit in which the staff undertakes those operations. The facility has remained completely free of COVID-19, due to the caring diligence of the long-term staff. Residents and families agree that there has never been a better time to reside in the community. The longevity of the Sanders Glen staff is rare to find in elder-care facilities. Most department heads have been in their positions for 10 to 12 years. Likewise, the dietary, nursing, activities, maintenance and environmental services staff consists of many individuals who have been employed for more than 10 years. “Families and residents continually express appreciation for staff efforts in monitoring during this time,” says Debbi Smith, director of marketing. “Temperatures and oxygen readings are taken daily. Precautions such as mask wearing were taken even before it was mandated, as a way to keep our population safe.”
Even though social distancing is practiced, residents avoid the feeling of complete isolation. Two patio spaces with umbrellas have been set up to allow families to have 45-minute visits with their loved ones, while sitting six feet away and wearing masks. Participants must have their temperature taken and answer screening questions before the session begins. Meals in the dining room and bingo games have resumed, with smaller groups and designated time slots. In both instances, only one person is seated per table. Although they remain six feet away from each other, residents find it reassuring to see that their friends and staff are healthy and doing well. “Socialization isn’t the same as usual, but it’s still very much alive and our friendly spirit can still be felt,” Smith says. “Even though
staff wears masks, residents can still see our smiling eyes.” Coming soon to the campus is The Cottages at Sanders Glen. This new project is designed to meet a need for maintenance-free, independent living in Westfield. It will carry on the tradition of Sanders Glen’s friendly and welcoming atmosphere. “The feedback we get from residents is that staff makes them feel safe and secure by monitoring their health during this time,” Smith says. “They are glad they don’t have to be home alone during the pandemic.” Sanders Glen Assisted Living is located at 334 South Cherry Street in Westfield. Saladworks, a fast-casual eatery that offers customizable salads, wraps, soups, sandwiches and more, opened on June 3 as the first franchise in the Hoosier state.
The Westfield location is the first Saladworks store to launch in the state of Indiana, and Dompier says several additional Indiana locations are in the works including a store on the Purdue University campus in West Lafayette.
“There’s nothing quite like this concept in Indiana, and we need something like this here,” says Owner John Dompier. “It’s nice to have something different than your pizza and burgers, where a lot of that stuff is the same wherever you go.” Each customer can create their own custom salads, choose from wraps, paninis, grain
Dompier, a Hamilton County resident, says the area is perfect for a fast-casual concept that offers truly fresh, healthy meals. “I figured this location would be the best way to go, since it’s in a brand new strip mall in the heart of Grand Park,” he says of his
eatery’s location on East State Road 32. Dompier adds that Saladworks has been able to weather the coronavirus pandemic a bit better than many eateries that rely more exclusively on dine-in business. “Saladworks has always been 80% to 90% to-go orders, third-party deliveries, online orders, catering and curbside delivery,” he says. “They do really good in this kind of a situation because they’re built for it. It’s been doing well. We’re battling the pandemic, and we’re battling supply chains because of the pandemic, and also it’s a new market because of what’s going on with the pandemic - but we’re doing well.”
The wide variety of Signature salad and wrap recipes includes options like the Farmers Market, which comes with roasted turkey, roasted butternut squash, Brussel sprouts, bacon, grapes and feta cheese, as well as the Southwest Chipotle Ranch, featuring grilled chicken, fresh avocado, a fire-roasted corn and bean medley, tomatoes, pepper jack cheese and tortilla strips. If you’re in the mood to make your own bowl or wrap, it all starts with bases to choose from - think chopped kale, a super grains blend and radiatore pasta among others - and from there, you can pick a dressing and choose from a wide range of extras like banana peppers, chopped tomatoes, walnuts, fresh broccoli, parmesan cheese, sliced egg, grilled chicken, baked tofu, smoked ham and much more. Sandwich selections include the Avocado BLT and Loaded Chicken Salad, as well as
paninis like the Buffalo Chicken, Turkey Melt, Chicken Parmesan, Caprese and more. Bringing little ones along? They’re covered as well, and choose from a Kids’ Caesar Wrap, BBQ Chicken Wrap and Quesadilla. “It’s something different - it’s a healthy option, and can be unhealthy too if you want it to,” Dompier adds. Individuals and families can finish off their meals with Crispy Rice Marshmallow Treats or cookies like Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin, M&M and White Chocolate Macadamia. The eatery offers online ordering, as well as delivery via Door Dash, Uber Eats and GrubHub. Those planning an upcoming gathering, conference or party can take advantage of Saladworks’ catering options. Medium and large King Salad options can feed 8 to 10 or 18 to 20 people respectively. Entertaining
Trays as well as Signature Wraps, Pinwheel Wraps and Sandwiches can also be ordered in amounts suitable for events and special occasions. The eatery also offers a Saladworks Rewards program, through which members can earn one redeemable point for every $1 spent. Members who earn 101 or 401 points within one year achieve Gold or Platinum status, respectively. Participants in the program can earn rewards and free offers and receive restaurant updates. Customers can download the Rewards application from the Apple App Store or Google Play store or use the link to the program on the official website.

Reggie Stewart, founder of Reggie’s Motorworks in Noblesville, has many satisfied customers, and that’s the primary reason why he decided to open a new Noblesville shop - Noble Auto Service on 10th Street. “Because we specialize in working on European imports such as BMW, MercedesBenz, Volkswagen, Porsche, and many other European cars at Reggie’s Motorworks, we have many satisfied customers wanting to know if we can work on some other cars,” Stewart says. “The demand to work on these other cars was so great that it was time to start another business.”
“A lot of our customers have a brother or a parent that doesn’t drive a European car, but they have heard great things about the work we do at Reggie’s, so we want to be able to provide full-service work for all kinds of other vehicles,” Stewart says. “It’s been wonderful that so many people give us such great reviews. We have strived to be a very reputable car shop, and we will be providing the same excellent work at Noble Auto Service.”
“We are very proud of the work we do,” Stewart says. “Our goal is to always earn the respect of our customers, and make sure they want to come back to us. We have earned a stellar reputation for excellence, and it is our goal to not only be good today, but be better tomorrow.” Stewart says positive feedback from his customers is inspiring for the future.

C - Check your child’s temperature each morning before sending them to school.
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing
When it became clear that the coronavirus wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon but that people were desperate to resume normal activities — like getting back to school — the Hamilton County Health Department decided to launch a Show Some C.L.A.S.S. campaign, which just kicked off this month.
L - Lead by example by social distancing and wearing a mask whenever you leave the house. “Some people don’t understand that it’s masks and social distancing together— not one or the other,” Sander says. A - Avoid large crowds.
“We want to encourage community members — especially those with students — to curb their extracurricular activities so that we can limit exposure and slow transmission within the school buildings,” says Tammy Sander, APR with Hamilton County Communications. The acronym in the Show Some C.L.A.S.S. campaign is as follows:
“This has been a big focal point as we have seen a significant uptick in positive cases since July 4 in the 0-19 age range, and particularly in the 14-18 age range,” Sander says. Transmission is happening at superspreader events such as weddings, BBQs, family reunions, and private parties.
“People are letting their guard down because they’re outside and feel they don’t need to wear masks,” says Sander, noting that it’s best to avoid slumber parties, car pools, playdates and busy playgrounds. “If you want kids to stay in school for as long as possible, we need to limit our exposure to potential virus in the environment.” S – Schedule a test if someone in your family exhibits signs of COVID-19. S – Stay home until you receive your test results or if you’re not feeling well. Unfortunately, many people are out & about while awaiting their result. If they turn out to be positive, contact tracing must be done to track down all the people they’ve potentially exposed. Compliance to following these two simple

rules — social distancing and wearing a mask — hasn’t been easy. Some don’t like being told what to do while others complain that the masks make their glasses fog up or their face break out. Others simply resist change. “Routine is a hard thing to start, but it can be done,” says Sander, who recalls when she was in sixth grade and brought home a “seatbelt pledge” that she asked her mom to sign, vowing that the whole family would start wearing a seatbelt. Though her mom complained initially, they got used to it and never stopped.

The Hamilton County Health Department is implementing a Teen Task Force that will include five seniors from seven high schools in Carmel, Westfield, Noblesville and northern Hamilton County. The hope is that if seniors ask their peers to make smart choices, the underclassmen will listen. “Tapping into that FOMO mentality of potentially missing prom or graduation, we hope that those seniors will have influence over underclassmen to behave,” Sander says. “I hope to assemble a group with varying backgrounds — athletes, musicians, art students, etcetera, so we have different spheres of influence.”

Grinds Coffee Pouches

he story of Grinds Coffee Pouches has a very humble beginning. “We use the phrase fondly — ‘We were just two idiots chewing on coffee and getting some caffeine,’” says Grinds Coffee Pouches co-founder Pat Pezet. “Matt had just finished playing minor league ball, so we came up with the idea of, ‘Yeah, we could take this down to Spring Training and pass it around to some of our buddies.’” After starting their brand out on the West Coast, Grinds Coffee Pouches has moved its headquarters to Westfield, allowing for a more centralized hub to serve devoted clientele throughout the U.S. Originally founded in 2009, Grinds Coffee Pouches provides a healthy alternative to chewing tobacco, with flavors that range from black coffee to spearmint. Both former baseball players, Pezet and business partner Matt Canepa first met while attending college at Cal Poly, where they both were a part of the school’s baseball team. Looking back, the Grinds Coffee Pouches co-founders see the sport of baseball as the reason why they’re where they are today. “It really was a catalyst to bringing us together, and eventually launching the company together,” Canepa says. “Without baseball, I’m almost certain both our lives would be completely different, and this would’ve never happened.” After pitching their initial business idea to a contest at Cal Poly, the two were awarded $15,000, which they see as the first major springboard for Grinds Coffee Pouches. “We just stretched out every dollar and turned that in a-year-and-a-half into the first production run, and it was feeble,” Pezet says.
With a strong network of ties to Major League Baseball through their playing backgrounds, however, the Grinds Coffee Pouches product eventually started to catch on, due to the duo’s calculated, on-theground marketing approach.
eventually grabbing the attention of ABC’s “Shark Tank.”
“It was like getting shot out of a cannon, except you weren’t in a rocket ship — you were in a cardboard box,” says Pezet on the impact of “Shark Tank” on their business. “We knew that the entire baseball world for “So it was like one to two years until we got basically a month and a half resides in two out from underwater, in a great way.” locations in the United States: Arizona and Since appearing on “Shark Tank,” the Florida,” Canepa says. “We knew a bunch Grounds Coffee Pouches brand has grown of players since we’d been playing with organically, so much so that Canepa and Pezet them in college. Now located at 17065 Oak Ridge Road in Westfield, the duo couldn’t be happier with the decision to move their headquarters from California to Indiana. “The people are great and very skilled,” Canepa says. “We’ve got a team inhouse now who are fantastic. The location is great — it gets to 70% of our customers within a couple days of shipping. Everything about it has been really good.” While Canepa and his wife still live in San Francisco, Pezet is now proud to call himself an Indiana resident.

“Life in Indiana is incredible,” Pezet says. “You have the quality of life, no traffic and affordable housing. You have downtown, but you also have the outskirts. I love it.” In addition to having a centralized location, Grinds Coffee Pouches has also managed to build an Indiana-based team that it’s proud of as well. “Theoretically, in the Bay Area, there are a lot of really skilled, highly-educated people,” Canepa says. “But heading out to Indiana, we’ve been absolutely thrilled with the amount of talent they’ve got and how hard working they are. We feel pretty good about the team we’ve built there thus far, and it’s only just starting to pick up and grow as we continue to grow the company.”
