ENERGIZING EDDY’S
BELOVED GEIST RESTAURANT GETS FRESH UPDATES & COMMUNITY SPIRIT
Writer / Renée Larr
For years, Eddy’s at Geist has been a go-to spot for casual dining, family gatherings and camaraderie. Now, under the ownership of Diana Miller and Ryan Hockemeyer, the restaurant is entering a new chapter filled with energy, creativity and a vision to make Eddy’s an even more exciting community hangout.
“We want to honor what people love about Eddy’s while breathing new life into it,” Miller says. “This isn’t about reinventing the wheel. It’s about freshening things up and creating new experiences that bring people together.”
At the heart of the changes is a renewed focus on food and drink. A freshly designed cocktail menu will debut, showcasing drinks crafted with house-made fruit purees and creative flair. From spicy mango margaritas to rich espresso martinis, the bar team has been testing recipes with staff input, ensuring every drink is as fun as it is flavorful.
“Everyone’s been pitching in ideas,” Hockemeyer says. “When things slow down, the bartenders experiment, and it’s been exciting to see what they create.”
Seasonal cocktails will rotate throughout the year, giving guests something new to look forward to with each visit.
On the food side, football season specials are already a hit. Sundays bring hearty appetizers such as boneless buffalo wings and potato skins, perfect for sharing on game day. A seasonal menu will launch in October, bringing back favorites like shrimp and grits and jambalaya.
“We’ve been testing dishes, and people are really responding,” Miller says. “Eddy’s has always been known for soups, too, so we’ll keep leaning into that, especially when the weather turns cold.”
Miller and Hockemeyer are also expanding Eddy’s role as an entertainment destination. Expect to see trivia and bingo nights, live music and festive events throughout the year. Families can look forward to a pumpkin carving night for kids.

Football fans won’t be left out either. Every Sunday, Eddy’s will broadcast games on all screens, ensuring Colts supporters and fans of any team have a home base to cheer.
“We’ll have every game on,” Hockemeyer says. “So whether you’re a Lions fan or a Packers fan, you’ve got a spot here.”
For private gatherings, the restaurant is open to hosting large parties of up to 50 guests with advance notice.
“We’ve already hosted some big groups, and we’re ready for more, especially with the holidays coming up,” Miller says.
Beyond food and events, the owners are investing heavily in cosmetic updates to make the space brighter and more welcoming. A design team is working on new layouts, furniture upgrades and updated finishes.
“We’re excited to give it a little facelift,” Miller says. “It will completely change the atmosphere.”
The updates go hand in hand with a renewed sense of energy. From refreshed music playlists to livelier décor, guests can already feel the shift.
“It’s minor things, but it changes the vibe,” Hockemeyer says. “We want people to walk in and feel upbeat and comfortable.”
Miller and Hockemeyer understand that staying connected means meeting customers where they are. The Eddy’s team is ramping up its social media presence, keeping the community informed about menus, specials and events through Facebook and Instagram. A TikTok account is also in the works, with staff eager to contribute fun, behindthe-scenes content.
“We’ve got a lot of college students on staff, and they’re all about TikTok,” Miller says. “It’ll be a great way to show our personality and connect with younger guests.”

Online ordering and delivery are also on the horizon, with DoorDash set to be implemented soon. For regulars who may not always be able to make it out, this change will make enjoying Eddy’s food easier than ever.
One of the most striking differences under the new leadership is the way Miller and Hockemeyer involve staff in shaping Eddy’s future. They’ve set up a group chat dedicated to employee ideas, where team members can pitch suggestions ranging from menu specials to event concepts.
“What our staff says really matters to us,” Hockemeyer says. “They know our customers best, and they’re the ones hearing what people want. If they bring us an idea, we’re listening.”
— DIANA MILLER

That philosophy extends to customer feedback as well. Whether through social media or in person, the owners encourage patrons to share honest input.
“We’d rather people come to us directly so we can make it right,” Miller says. “Feedback drives improvement, and improvement is our priority.”
As the pair ushers Eddy’s into its next chapter, they remain mindful of the restaurant’s deep roots. Former owners James and Michelle Jallal passed the torch with their blessing, and longtime guests can rest assured that the dishes and traditions they love will remain.
“We’re not taking away the staples,” Miller says. “We know what’s important to our regulars. This is about adding to it, not replacing it.”
“Eddy’s has always been a gathering place,” Hockemeyer says. “We want to keep that spirit alive and make it even stronger. Good food, good drinks, good people. That’s what it’s all about.”

Kalea Bentley
LAWRENCE NORTH HIGH SCHOOL

For Kalea Bentley, a senior at Lawrence North High School, being a student-athlete means more than just balancing practices and games. It represents discipline, commitment and a determination to excel both in the classroom and on the basketball court.
“Being a student-athlete has really taught me how important time management and discipline are,” Kalea says.
She follows a structured routine, making schoolwork her top priority before shifting her focus to basketball, and then dedicating time to community involvement. This
balance has become the foundation of her success.
On the court, Kalea has already achieved a milestone that most athletes dream of — helping lead Lawrence North to the 2025 IHSAA 4A State Championship. She describes the victory as the most rewarding moment of her career so far.
“All the hard practices, long seasons and challenges we faced as a team led to that moment and brought us together,” she reflects.
The championship was not just about the win, but also about the perseverance and teamwork that defined the journey.
Off the court, Kalea is equally committed to making a difference. She is deeply involved with the Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana, an organization close to her heart. Living with Type 1 diabetes, Kalea has found connection, encouragement, and purpose in supporting others who share her experience.
“It means a lot to connect with other kids who have Type 1 diabetes and support them,” she explains.

At Lawrence North, Kalea also serves as a Student Assistant for the Athletic Director and is an active member of the Student Athletic Board. These roles allow her to contribute to the school community by helping with events, supporting fellow athletes, and learning valuable leadership skills that will serve her long after high school.
Her impact stretches beyond athletics and academics. Kalea’s involvement demonstrates a passion for uplifting others, whether it’s cheering on a teammate, mentoring younger students, or giving back to her community through service.
Looking ahead, Kalea hopes to continue her basketball career at the collegiate level while pursuing a degree that allows her to combine

her leadership, resilience and desire to serve others. With her strong foundation of discipline and her ability to juggle academics, athletics and community service, there is little doubt she will thrive in the next chapter of her journey.
For Kalea Bentley, the lessons of basketball and academics are tightly woven together — teaching her how to manage time, overcome challenges and lead with integrity.
Her story reflects the true spirit of a studentathlete: not only striving for excellence on the court, but also working tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of others.

SHINE BRIGHTLY WITH OUTDOOR LIGHTING ASK THE GEIST DECK AND DOCK EXPERTS

Why should the enjoyment of your backyard space end when the sun goes down? With thoughtfully placed outdoor lighting, you can extend your evenings, improve safety, and elevate the overall atmosphere of your deck, dock, or patio. At Creed Improvements, we believe lighting isn’t just an add-on — it’s an essential element of great outdoor living. For years, we’ve been incorporating lighting solutions into our deck and dock projects, creating functional spaces that shine well into the night.
We’re proud to partner with Decks & Docks of Indianapolis, a full-line supplier offering a wide range of lighting options tailored for outdoor use. Whether your project requires standard 110-volt electrical lighting, energy-efficient low-voltage systems, solar-powered fixtures, or even underwater lighting for dramatic dockside effects, we’re here to help you choose the right option that matches both your style and budget.
Today’s lighting features are as beautiful as they are practical. From elegant, illuminated glass railings to subtle undermount lighting and sleek post cap lights, there’s no shortage of creative ways to bring a soft,

ambient glow to your space. Add riser lights to stairs or post-mount lights along railings to guide foot traffic safely, especially after dark. Planning for dock lighting? Consider classic wharf lights or underwater fixtures that not only look amazing but also improve visibility for latenight boat rides or fishing.
For those who prefer a simpler setup, solar lights offer a hasslefree solution without the need to run electricity. They’re great for highlighting walking paths, stairs, or perimeter features — all while charging during the day and shining at night.
Lighting isn’t just about beauty; it also adds security. A well-lit outdoor area deters unwanted guests and helps keep your family and visitors safe from accidental trips or falls.
With over a DECKade of experience, Creed Improvements is your trusted partner for custom deck, dock, and patio builds across Central Indiana. Let us help you light up your summer nights with quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. As always, our design consultations and estimates are free.

ST. VINCENT PRIMARY CARE & PEDIATRICS
Writer / Amie Drudge

Right in your own backyard, you’ve got more than just a doctor — you’ve got lifelong care. St. Vincent Primary Care and Pediatrics in Lawrence is here for every stage of life.
This practice, located just off Lee Road next to Fort Ben and across the street from the library, is the perfect blend of urgent care convenience and family doctor familiarity. Unlike many offices where you might wait weeks for an appointment, St. Vincent Lawrence Primary Care and Pediatrics makes it a priority to see you when you need care most.
“Our patients come back because they aren’t seeing just any doctor moonlighting at different locations,” says Myrle MartinDulaney, the office physician coordinator says. “We know their history and insurance provider, we have their records in the system, and we treat them like family.”
MEET THE PEDIATRIC PROVIDERS
DR. TAMARA DICKERSON, MD
Dr. Dickerson is a beloved pediatrician who has been caring for local families long enough to watch her patients grow up — and now bring in children of their own. Her
reputation for compassion is legendary. One young patient, so eager to show his appreciation, once picked flowers from the office planters just so he wouldn’t arrive at his appointment with Dr. Dickerson emptyhanded. Outside of caring for children, Dr. Dickerson spends time growing her faith and investing in her family and in her community.
DR. ERRIS ROWAN, DO
Dr. Rowan is trained in osteopathic medicine, which takes a whole-body approach to pediatric care. As a new mother herself, she connects deeply with young families and is especially skilled at
Dr. Tamara Dickerson, MD , Stacy Frazier, FNP-C, Erris Rowan, DO
interpreting the unspoken needs of children. Her perspective as both physician and parent makes her uniquely attuned to her patients’ experiences. Outside of the office, Dr. Rowan enjoys precious moments with family, playing with their dog, Lola, and staying active.
STACY FRAZIER, FNP-C
Nurse Practitioner Stacy Frazier brings a thoughtful, hands-on approach to every visit. After training across multiple sites, she refined her vision for patient-centered care—one that blends expertise with genuine compassion. Outside of the office, Stacy enjoys reading, baking, staying active and spending time with family and friends.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF OFFICE
At Lawrence Pediatrics, care is never centralized or impersonal. Instead of a phone tree or voicemail system, every call is answered directly by a registered nurse. Patients love the reassurance of speaking to a knowledgeable voice right away, and urgent concerns are handled quickly and thoughtfully. If a same-day appointment is needed, they make it happen.

After hours, patients have access to a triage line for emergencies, ensuring support is always available when it’s truly needed.
A COMMUNITYCENTERED TEAM
This remarkable team of women — supported by experienced RN’s has built a practice rooted in relationships. MartinDulaney has coordinated care here for nearly a decade, and she describes it as “the joy of our lives” to watch children grow up under their care.
“When young patients transition out of pediatrics, we help them find a family
doctor within the same office, ensuring continuity of care that lasts a lifetime.”
Serving the communities of Geist, McCordsville, Fishers and Lawrence, St. Vincent Primary Care and Pediatrics offers both convenience and excellence. With their focus on accessibility, compassion, and whole-family care, they truly embody what it means to be a neighborhood practice.
If you find yourself driving too far for the care you deserve, consider looking closer to home or in your own backyard. The team at St. Vincent Lawrence will handle your family’s health — today and for years to come.

As the fifth largest school district in Indiana, we proudly serve nearly almost 17,000 students and employ more than 2,500 dedicated educators and staff members. Our district has long been recognized for its academic excellence, innovative programs, and commitment

to preparing young people for success in a rapidly changing world.
While we are proud of our tradition, our work is forward-focused. Families in Lawrence Township can expect progressive learning communities where innovation, creativity, and critical thinking are encouraged and valued. We are deeply committed to providing safe, supportive, and engaging school environments where every student is challenged to reach their potential academically, socially, and civically.

Dr. Shawn Smith

Excellence is not just our expectation— it is our promise. Every student. Every day.
From our Early Learning Centers to our award-winning high schools and Center for Innovation & Technology, Lawrence Township Schools offer a wide range of opportunities in academics, athletics, and the performing arts. These experiences prepare students not only for college and careers, but also to become thoughtful, contributing members of our community.
With a 95% graduation rate and a growing number of students entering the workforce with industry-recognized credentials, we are seeing the results of our shared investment in student success. Our students continue to lead in extracurricular excellence, from 2025 state titles in Girls Basketball and Boys Track & Field to national academic recognitions and a total of $54M in awarded scholarships to the Class of 2025.
Literacy remains a foundational priority. Through targeted initiatives and early interventions, are seeing measurable gains in student reading and comprehension as reflected in district IREAD3 data for 2025 where we celebrate 14% growth district wide on the assessment, 9% above the state average. These efforts ensure our students are equipped with the critical skills needed to access opportunity and achieve their full potential.
I am proud to serve the patrons of this community and grateful for the strong partnership we share with local businesses, families, and organizations. Together, we are shaping the future of Lawrence Township by investing in the next generation of leaders.
Yours in education,

“When my wife and I started a family, we knew education would guide many of our life decisions. MSD of Lawrence Township stood out for its diverse community, excellent schools, and unique opportunities for growth. Once we moved, we discovered the dual language program, which offered our children the invaluable gift of becoming bilingual. Enrolling them in a Spanish Immersion school was an easy decision, and experiencing MSDLT as a parent inspired me to serve as an educator within the district. Today, I’m proud to teach in the dual language program at Forest Glen Elementary. In the entire Indianapolis area, there’s no better place to raise a family, educate children, and build a meaningful career than in MSD of Lawrence Township.”
Ian Yearwood, Parent and Principal of Forest Glen Elementary

“Since preschool, the MSD of Lawrence Township has provided amazing wraparound support to my child with special needs (as well as my other two children) I serve on the school board, in part, to pay back the work they do on her behalf as well as the thousands of other students our district serves.”

WHY HIGH-ACHIEVING WOMEN STAY OVERWHELMED
AND HOW TO CHANGE IT
Writer / Tara Holloway, CEO Next Level Strategic
Most powerhouse women I encounter aren’t lacking ambition, they’re drowning in options. They’re running businesses, leading teams, raising families, chasing growth, and wondering why they still feel stuck or stretched thin. The problem isn’t that they’re doing the wrong things. It’s that they’re doing everything.
If you’re a woman in business, here’s your reminder: You don’t need more hustle. You need more clarity.

HERE ARE THREE STRATEGIC SHIFTS THAT CAN HELP YOU CUT THROUGH THE CHAOS AND LEAD WITH CONFIDENCE.
1 2 3
PROTECT YOUR TIME LIKE IT’S REVENUE
Your calendar reflects your priorities. Audit it ruthlessly. What’s draining you? What’s driving real growth? Every “yes” costs you something valuable - focus, energy or opportunity. Learn to say “no” faster and without guilt. That space you free up? That’s where your next breakthrough lives.
Time audits reveal uncomfortable truths. You might discover you’re spending 40% of your week on tasks that could be delegated, automated or eliminated entirely. The highest-performing leaders guard their calendars like financial assets because they understand that time mismanagement is profit erosion.
DEFINE SUCCESS FOR THIS SEASON, NOT SOMEDAY
Get brutally honest: What does success actually look like for you right now? Not for your industry. Not for your competitors. For you, in this season of your life and business.
This requires aligning your values, current capacity and real market opportunity — not just chasing someone else’s definition of winning. Maybe success this quarter means building systems instead of revenue. Maybe it means saying no to growth opportunities that don’t align with your long-term vision. Clarity kills comparison, and comparison will keep you playing small when you’re built to scale big.
SYSTEMS CREATE FREEDOM, NOT RESTRICTION
Overwhelm thrives in disorganization. The antidote isn’t working harder, it’s working within frameworks that eliminate decision fatigue.
Build rhythms that support your peak performance: weekly CEO time for strategic thinking, quarterly planning sessions, streamlined communication channels. Replace the 12 sticky notes with one dashboard. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s predictable progress.
Leaders who implement these systems report having 30% more focused time and significantly less decision fatigue within 90 days. They stop reacting to their business and start directing it.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS
You can be wildly capable and completely burnt out simultaneously. But capability without clarity leads to exhaustion, not excellence.
You were never meant to carry it all. You were meant to lead with vision, move with intention and build something that creates impact without consuming your life.

The most successful women leaders share one trait: they’ve learned to distinguish between being busy and being productive. They’ve mastered the art of strategic subtraction — removing what doesn’t serve their bigger vision.
Your next level isn’t about adding more. It’s about choosing better.
Clarity is your competitive advantage. Simplicity is your power move.

BATTLE FOR FLAVOR
WORLD FOOD CHAMPIONSHIPS BRINGS HIGH-STAKES
CULINARY COMPETITION TO INDY
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing
For 12 years, Mike McCloud worked in the marketing department with the Kansas City BBQ Society, and during that time, he noticed that while there were great BBQ competitions, other silos of competition were also popping up — burger battles, sandwich slams and dessert-offs. Meanwhile, the Food Network was growing like wildfire.
“There was this undiscovered industry of competition cooks — whether that be home cooks, professional chefs or competition teams — who were as passionate as any athlete in any arena,” says McCloud, who wanted to fill that void. “These people needed their own Super Bowl where they could be celebrated for being an awardwinning cook.”
He and his firm took two years to develop rules, a level playing
field strategy, and a blind judging process that would allow judges to critique foods across multiple genres in the same way. The World Food Championships (WFC) debuted in 2012, using a system where competitors win their way into the big event. Once a contestant wins a qualifier, they enter a specific genre of food — Bacon, Barbecue, Burger, Chef, Dessert, Live Fire, Noodle, Rice, Sandwich, Seafood, Soup or Vegetarian.
Those winners then face two more challenges: an opening round where they bring their signature dish to the table, and a final round where they compete for the $10,000 payday in that particular genre. The 10 champions in those genres advance to the Final Table, where they complete three localized challenges.
When the WFC first debuted, it featured more than 200 teams

competing for a grand prize of $50,000. This year the WFC includes 280 teams representing 49 states and 45 countries, competing for a grand prize of $150,000.
“We continue to ebb and flow with the trends of competition cooking,” McCloud says. “It’s been a lot of fun — and a lot of calories.”
Last year Collin Hilton was crowned 2024 World Noodle Champion. Hilton, corporate chef de cuisine at Cunningham Restaurant Group, stumbled into WFC when a chef buddy asked him to take his place at a Golden Ticket event.
“I didn’t realize what I’d gotten myself into,” Hilton says. “By the end of it, we [Hilton and his sous chef] were doing a chef-to-chef, one-hour competition where we had to cook something out of a shelf of ingredients.”
They won that and kept cooking. They also won at the Indiana State Fair last fall with a ricotta and honey stuffed pasta atop winter squash and a brown butter puree with fruit and Parmesan garnishes.
Judges score food by execution, appearance and taste. Contestants must upload the title and description of their dish 30 days prior to the event to establish a contract between the cook and the judge.
“When a judge knows that Contestant A created a chipotle honey glazed Polynesian hamburger, for instance, they know what they’re

trying to discern so they can judge it accurately,” McCloud says.
Cheferees are on hand to ensure contestants follow the rules and to provide entertainment.
“We aren’t the Savannah Bananas of baseball, but we’re closer to that than the L.A. Dodgers,” McCloud says, noting that some competitors are animated in their cooking, which captivates the audience.

Although Hilton is not competitive by nature, he enjoyed WFC because of the camaraderie among competitors.
“You’re with people who are going through the same experience, so you become close,” Hilton says. “We all chose to stress ourselves out in the same way.”
Cooking live in front of judges, cheferees and spectators — all with a running clock ticking down — can be daunting. While the people didn’t bother Hilton, since he’s used to working in open kitchens, the clock was a different story.
“In a restaurant setting, you’re still racing against the clock to a cetain degree, but if a diner gets their steak 30 seconds later, it’s fine,” Hilton says. “Here, you’re disqualified. That’s a little stressful.”
The four-day event is the world’s largest live cooking competition and includes 40 complete kitchenettes. Each day runs from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday are opening rounds, Saturday are redemption rounds, and Sunday are the finals.
“WE AREN’T THE SAVANNAH BANANAS OF BASEBALL, BUT WE’RE CLOSER TO THAT THAN THE L.A. DODGERS.”
—MIKE MCCLOUD

The WFC is partnering with two Indianapolis nonprofits — Gleaners and Second Helpings — to donate nonperishable foods at the end of the event. They also donate unused pantry items, providing between 5,000 and 10,000 meals.
This year they anticipate between 15,000 and 20,000 spectators. A general admission ticket allows you to sample some foods, but for a more robust foodie experience, guests can upgrade with taste programs. On the weekend, the Taste of WFC offers spectators the chance to try past WFC recipes. Ignite is a BBQ weekend kickoff event on Friday night where guests can choose from four or five flavors of ribs. There are also VIP grand tastings for special guests and sponsors.
Saturday will feature family fun, starting with the Biscuits & Jampionship competition, followed by the WFC Jr., where kids in the Indy area showcase their culinary skills, and then Battle of the Branches, a veteran-based challenge representing all branches of the military.
McCloud’s favorite part of WFC is seeing chefs’ faces when they’re given a fair chance to prove their talent.
“We’ve tapped into a mindset and a passion that’s not going to go away,” he says.
The World Food Championships will be held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds from Oct. 16-19. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit worldfoodchampionships.com.

KHAMIS FINE JEWELERS

Writer / Natalie Platt
A business staying in the same location for three decades is a rare achievement in retail and speaks volumes about Khamis Fine Jewelers’ reputation in the Geist community.
Entering its 30th year on Fall Creek Road, the jewelry store has built trust with generations of clients through credibility and consistent customer service — something proprietor Mary Khamis-Rowe says is the key to maintaining a longstanding business.
“The only thing that separates one jewelry store from another is the service,” KhamisRowe says. “Anybody can sell you a chain or design a custom piece, but how you treat people is what matters.”
That philosophy has guided her through 30 years at the shop on Fall Creek Road but started as a part-time job while she was in school.
Khamis-Rowe’s career began in 1978 when she took a job at Zales in Washington Square while still in high school. From there she worked at Gordon Jewelers, then Goodman Jewelers at Glendale. After years of experience, she decided she didn’t want to spend her career behind a counter at the mall — if she was going to do this, she wanted to have her own business. With the support of her father and brothers, who she says are her mentors, that’s what she did.
Khamis-Rowe opened Khamis Fine Jewelers in November 1995, bringing to life a vision shaped by a lifelong passion for jewelry and professional credentials. She holds a degree in business from IUPUI and is a Graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America. She has also been certified as an appraiser specializing in gems, jewelry and watches.
“Education was important to me,” she says. “I wanted to be able to stand behind the pieces we sell and the appraisals we do.”
With her career in the industry now
spanning more than four decades, she has worked with both large corporations and independent jewelers, building deep expertise in buying, selling and appraising fine jewelry, loose diamonds and gemstones. Her deep experience set the foundation for a successful career built on knowledge, trust and a personal touch. Khamis-Rowe loves seeing second-generation customers visiting her store to buy special pieces and is often invited to her customers’ weddings. Khamis Fine Jewelers has built a reputation not just for classic jewelry but for unique pieces customers won’t find elsewhere.
“We’re known for having things you don’t see in every store,” Khamis-Rowe says. “Customers love finding something special here.”
Each fall, the shop hosts its annual opal show, now in its 17th year, drawing collectors and casual buyers alike. Even with her expertise and long history, Khamis-Rowe says the heart of the business is still customer service.
“We treat every piece of jewelry as if it were our own,” she says. “People are looking for good service, and that’s what we’ve always stressed. My favorite part of this business is putting smiles on people’s faces. Knowing you helped create a memory for someone and their family — that never gets old.”
Being tied to the customers and the community — and community involvement — has always been part of the Khamis reputation. Khamis Fine Jewelers has sponsored local Little League teams and the Lawrence Township Basketball League, while Khamis-Rowe also supports Conquer Paralysis Now, a global project of the Sam Schmidt Foundation. With the foundation, Khamis-Rowe has played a role in helping raise more than $1M.
The store has also earned recognition as a trusted partner in statewide celebrations. Khamis Fine Jewelers is the official jeweler for the 500 Festival Princess Program, creating custom pendants for each of the 33 princesses every year. They also serve as the official jeweler of the Indiana State Fair Queen’s Program, designing the queen’s ring that represents her title. For Khamis-Rowe, the work is about more than jewelry.
It is about creating pieces that carry meaning, supporting the community she calls home and continuing the tradition of craftsmanship and care that has guided her career.
“Thirty years have just flown by,” she says.
Yet her advice for others considering business ownership is straightforward. “Do it if it’s your passion. Be prepared and go for it,” she says.
To learn more about Khamis Fine Jewelers, call 317-841-8440 or visit the store at 9763 Fall Creek Road in Indianapolis. You can also email the store at khamiskfj2@ sbcglobal.net or visit khamisjewelers.com.
The store is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Khamis Fine Jewelers is closed Sundays and Mondays.

THE GROOVY CAFÉ

Writer / Amie Drudge
Tucked just off Fox Road, The Groovy Café is an absolute gem of a coffee shop serving up mochas, matcha, breakfast, lunch, and much-needed reminders like “Good things happen here.”
Owner Lisamarie Stonebraker bought the café earlier this year with a vision of making it more than just a place to grab a drink — and it’s working like a charm. The menu playfully nods to pop culture with items like the Gold Dust Omelette (a Stevie Nicks tribute) and the Ziggy-Wich (a Bowieinspired sourdough sandwich). Monthly menu changes keep things fresh, with next month featuring a Taylor Swift–themed special and bracelet-making event for her new album release. Something “Enchanted” will surely be on the menu!

But a clever menu isn’t the café’s only strength. Guests can expect delicious breakfast and lunch offerings made with care: hand-crafted salad dressings, cappuccinos flavored with seasonal house-made syrups, freshly baked bagels, the highest quality meats, and a blood orange olive oil cake that locals can’t stop raving about.
Whenever possible, Lisamarie sources ingredients close to home. Each day begins with freshly brewed Tinker Coffee, and every morning she picks up warm, justmade Sidedoor Bagels from downtown Indianapolis. Guests can also enjoy Naptown’s own Nelson’s locally blended teas and indulgent DeBrand Chocolates from Fort Wayne.
About 90% of the baked goods are crafted in-house, complemented by premium
Boar’s Head meats. And yes — there are charcuterie boards, beautifully prepared to enjoy in the café or to take on the go. Simply delicious!
Dietary needs? No problem. The menu offers multiple options for gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian guests.
Beyond food and drink, The Groovy Café is also a curated little marketplace featuring locally made bracelets, hand-crafted cards, books, and even cat and dog treats (with proceeds supporting animal shelters). One of Lisamarie’s staff members describes it as “a fabulous little jewelry box of items.” And when it comes to her staff, Lisamarie doesn’t

hesitate to give credit where it is due.
“I simply could not do this without the amazing group of people working behind the scenes,” she says. “They’re the ones who make this place tick.
“This place is about building relationships,” Lisamarie adds, as she serves up a rich, velvety mocha. “It’s a modern-day Cheersstyle coffee bar — a place where families and friends can connect. Moms bring their kids here to do homework, rewarding them with our soft serve ice-cream or pineapple dole whip. Friends meet friends. Families meet families. We don’t have a television. Instead, we keep a daily newspaper, plenty of books, and most importantly, face-to-face conversation. It’s about getting back to what once made us a groovy society — finding joy in fellowship with one another.”
Bring a book and sit for a spell, or grab a friend and experience The Groovy Café. It is located at 11659 Fox Road in Lawrence and is open Monday–Saturday, 7 a.m.–8:30 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m.–8:30 p.m.
