Chris Reed is the owner of Creed improvements specializing in building decks, pergolas, porches and more for Hamilton County families for over a decade. He enjoys building unique backyard spaces for his clients to create family memories of a lifetime. Chris has lived in Indy for over 30 years.

Each month Chris will be highlighting products and solutions for decks. Chris works with several suppliers in the Greater Indianapolis area giving customers many different options and price-points. His goal is to inform, educate and inspire innovations for the readers.

CREATING YOUR BACKYARD RETREAT WITH CUSTOM PRIVACY WALLS

A beautiful deck is often the centerpiece of outdoor living, but sometimes what homeowners want most isn’t a bigger space — it’s a more private one.

As neighborhoods throughout Geist, Fishers, McCordsville, Fortville and Lawrence continue to grow, homes are being built closer together than ever before. While many homeowners love spending time outdoors, they may not love feeling like they’re sharing that time with every neighbor in sight.

That’s where custom privacy walls come in.

Privacy walls have become one of the fastestgrowing trends in outdoor living design, offering homeowners a way to create a more intimate, comfortable and visually appealing backyard retreat. Whether you’re enjoying your morning coffee, hosting friends for dinner, soaking in a hot tub or simply relaxing after work, a privacy wall can transform an ordinary deck into a secluded oasis.

“Many homeowners are surprised by how much a privacy wall changes the feel of their outdoor space,” says Chris Reed, owner of Creed Improvements. “It’s not just about blocking a view. It’s about creating a destination where you can truly relax.”

Privacy walls can serve multiple purposes. In addition to screening neighboring homes, they can help reduce wind, provide shade during peak sunlight hours, define outdoor living spaces and add a striking architectural element to a deck design.

Today’s homeowners have more options than ever when it comes to materials and styles.

One of the most popular choices is laser-

cut aluminum privacy panels. These architecturally inspired screens feature decorative patterns ranging from modern geometric designs to nature-inspired motifs. Powder-coated aluminum construction provides exceptional durability, resistance to fading and minimal maintenance requirements. The result is a sleek, contemporary look that offers privacy while still allowing light and airflow to pass through.

Composite privacy walls are another favorite among Geist-area homeowners. Manufacturers such as TimberTech and Trex offer products that complement composite decking systems while providing long-lasting performance. Unlike traditional wood, composite materials resist rot, warping, splitting and insect damage, making them an excellent choice for Indiana’s changing seasons.

For homeowners seeking a warmer, more natural appearance, horizontal wood-slat privacy walls remain a timeless option. Cedar and treated lumber can create a custom look that blends beautifully with surrounding landscaping while adding warmth and character to an outdoor living space.

Many homeowners are also incorporating privacy walls into larger outdoor projects. Privacy screens can be combined with pergolas, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, hot tubs and covered decks to create a resortstyle backyard experience.

At Creed Improvements, every privacy wall is custom-designed to fit the homeowner’s needs, aesthetic preferences and budget. Some projects feature fixed privacy walls, while others include movable or adjustable

panels that allow homeowners to open or close portions of the space as needed.

The flexibility of modern privacy wall systems means there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Factors such as deck size, sun exposure, neighboring sightlines and the desired level of privacy all influence the final design.

For homeowners considering an outdoor upgrade, privacy walls can often deliver a dramatic transformation without requiring a complete deck replacement. They provide an affordable way to increase comfort, functionality and curb appeal while adding value to the home.

With more than a DECKade of experience designing and building custom outdoor living spaces throughout Central Indiana, Creed Improvements helps homeowners navigate the many available options to find the perfect solution for their property.

“Our goal is to create spaces families will enjoy for years to come,” Reed says. “A well-designed privacy wall can completely change how homeowners use and enjoy their outdoor living area.”

Whether your style is modern, traditional or somewhere in between, a custom privacy wall can provide the perfect finishing touch — creating a backyard retreat that feels both private and uniquely your own.

GROWING PRACTICE MAINTAINS COMMUNITY ROOTS

Entering its 20th year, Fall Creek Veterinary Medical Center is a fixture in the Geist area, with clients and their furry family members visiting the office at 96th Street and Olio Road from Fishers, McCordsville, northeast Indianapolis, Fortville, Greenfield and beyond. Founded by Dr. Jerry Risser in the adjacent strip mall, the growth has been significant in an area with new home developments all around. “When I started the practice, it was just me and a small staff, and I dreamed that maybe we would add a doctor someday,” Risser says. “Those early days, I worked overnight shifts at an emergency hospital to help pay bills, and remember the mornings after, putting a blanket into a dog run between appointments and taking a quick nap. I don’t really miss that part!”

In 2014, Dr. Aaron Luth joined the practice, and the existing facility was stretched beyond its capacity. The year 2016 saw construction of their current freestanding building completed, and Luth commented, “When we moved into this building over four times the size of the prior space, I thought we’d never use it all. Next year, we plan to expand it.” Their current facility includes six exam rooms, a pet grooming area, a consultation/ comfort room, and a large surgical suite that allows two procedures to go simultaneously.

Five veterinarians are now on staff: Dr. Ernie Harshman joined in 2023, Dr. Jennifer Crowe in 2024, and Dr. Nicole Hoffmeyer in 2025. Additionally, 63 support staff members are kept busy with the growing patient load. The added capacity has been helpful in creating same-day appointment availability. Hoffmeyer notes, “When pets get sick, it’s better to have animals getting seen, and feeling better faster, by their own doctors,

without the stress and added expense of an urgent care or emergency facility.”

The practice has worked to be consistent with its core values of ethics, kindness, consistency, thoroughness, generosity, and community.

“We are by no means perfect, but we continue to strive to meet those goals,” says Risser. The practice administrator, Kristen King, marvels at the number of patients and the many services, from ultrasound and chemotherapy to “puppy parties,” the practice offers. “From the building’s outside, you’d never guess all that is packed in and goes on, and how many pets and their humans are served inside. I believe the key is the unchanging dedication of the doctors and staff to these core values, and the way the team works together to provide the best care and service we can.”

Another thing that will not change is the dedication to remain a privately owned practice. As corporations continue to purchase veterinary practices at an expanding rate, Fall Creek Veterinary Medical Center remains independently owned and directed by Dr. Risser and Dr. Luth, with no plans to join corporate veterinary medicine. Risser says, “Every week, I get more calls and emails than I can count from companies who want to own us. I ignore or politely decline each one. There are some advantages to corporate ownership, but the advantage we have is being more flexible and nimble, able to meet the needs of our very specific clientele, providing more personalized care. We don’t have to please investors, so we can focus on our medicine and client service.”

Lots has changed in 20 years...medicine is more sophisticated and options for pet care are plentiful. New medications and therapies, as well as communications technology for clients; all are exciting developments. Fall Creek Veterinary remains committed to being a fullservice “family doctor” for its primarily canine and feline patients for many years to come.

KEEPING PETS SAFE DURING INDIANA’S SUMMER HEAT

Summer in central Indiana brings longer days, backyard barbecues, family vacations and plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors with our four-legged companions. While pets often enjoy summer activities as much as their owners, rising temperatures can quickly become dangerous if proper precautions aren’t taken.

Veterinarians throughout the Geist and Lawrence communities encourage pet owners to make heat safety a priority during Indiana’s hottest months.

“Many people underestimate how quickly pets can overheat,” veterinarians say.

“Unlike humans, dogs and cats cannot cool themselves efficiently through sweating. They primarily regulate body temperature by panting, which becomes less effective during periods of high heat and humidity.”

One of the simplest ways to protect pets is by ensuring they always have access to fresh, clean water. Whether relaxing in the backyard, visiting a local park or spending a day on Geist Reservoir, pets should have water available at all times. Portable water bowls and pet-friendly water bottles make hydration easy while traveling.

Pet owners should also pay close attention

to pavement temperatures. Asphalt and concrete absorb heat throughout the day and can become significantly hotter than the surrounding air temperature. On an 85-degree day, pavement temperatures can exceed 130 degrees, causing painful burns to a dog’s paw pads within seconds.

A simple test recommended by veterinarians is placing the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Whenever possible, walk pets during the cooler morning or evening hours and choose grassy or shaded paths instead of hot sidewalks.

Heatstroke remains one of the most serious summer dangers for pets. Certain breeds, including bulldogs, pugs, boxers and other short-nosed dogs, face an increased risk because of their limited ability to cool themselves through panting. Senior pets, overweight animals and those with underlying health conditions are also more susceptible.

Common signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, a rapid heartbeat, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, disorientation and collapse. If any of these symptoms occur, owners should move the pet to a cool, shaded area immediately and contact a veterinarian.

Experts caution against using ice-cold water on an overheated pet. Instead, cool water and damp towels placed around the neck, belly and paws can help gradually reduce body temperature while veterinary care is sought.

Perhaps the most important summer safety reminder is to never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle. Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a parked car can rise rapidly to deadly levels. On an 80-degree day, the interior of a vehicle can exceed 100 degrees in less than 20 minutes.

REBUILDING SMILES REBUILDING SMILES

A major milestone for animal welfare in Marion County has officially arrived with the opening of the new Indianapolis Animal Care Services shelter on the city’s southeast side. The state-of-the-art facility, located on East Raymond Street, represents one of the largest investments in animal care in Indianapolis history and marks a new chapter for homeless pets throughout the community.

The new shelter officially opened to the public in May and more than doubles the size of the former Harding Street facility, which had struggled for years with overcrowding and limited space. City leaders, animal advocates and volunteers have long pushed for a modern shelter that could better serve both animals and residents across Marion County.

A NEW HOME FOR INDIANAPOLIS’ HOMELESS ANIMALS

The new 60,000-square-foot campus was designed with both animal health and adoption success in mind. Features include more than 230 dog kennels, cat condos, indoor and outdoor play areas, expanded veterinary facilities, visitation rooms for potential adopters and dedicated meetand-greet spaces that help families connect with pets in a calmer environment. Natural light, improved ventilation and larger living spaces are expected to significantly improve the quality of life for animals awaiting adoption.

City officials say the project cost more than $37 million and was funded through a combination of city investment and community fundraising efforts led by Friends of Indy Animals. The nonprofit organization raised more than $7 million

to help bridge funding gaps and support enhancements throughout the facility.

For many animal advocates, the new building represents far more than additional space. Indianapolis Animal Care Services is Indiana’s largest open-admission municipal shelter and often operates under immense pressure as stray animal populations and owner surrenders continue to rise. The

Nick Roberts, Indianapolis City-County Councilor, District 4

former shelter was originally intended for short-term animal holding and was never designed to handle the modern demands of animal welfare services.

The upgraded shelter now includes an inhouse veterinary clinic, improved medical and laboratory space, dedicated staff facilities and expanded areas for volunteer and foster coordination. Outdoor walking paths, dog parks and enrichment spaces were intentionally designed to reduce stress

and improve adoptability for animals in care.

Community reaction to the opening has been overwhelmingly positive, with many Indianapolis residents praising the longawaited investment in animal welfare. Local social media discussions and community forums have highlighted excitement about the shelter’s expanded capabilities and the potential impact on adoption rates and overall animal care throughout the city.

As the doors open on this new facility, many hope it will not only provide safer temporary housing for homeless animals but also inspire greater community involvement through adoption, fostering, volunteering and responsible pet ownership. For Marion County’s animals — and the people who care deeply about them — the new shelter represents hope, compassion and a brighter future.

Joe Renner, Town Manager

With the town of Fortville, I serve a few different roles, but as community relations director for the town of Fortville, I have the unique privilege of serving this community from many different perspectives. I am a resident, a customer, a consumer, a longtime employee and coach within the Mt. Vernon community, and a volunteer with organizations including the Mt. Vernon Optimist Club, Friends of the Library and Kiwanis. Before joining the town, I spent more than 30 years in management and customer service, experiences that taught me the importance of relationships, communication and serving others.

Those experiences have shaped my vision for community engagement and led to the creation of Fortville’s Fourth Fridays, which officially launched Feb. 27, 2026, building upon the monthly coffee meetups that had brought local business leaders together over the previous two years. Held at Fortville Town Hall, these gatherings provide an opportunity

EAT DRINK SHOP DISCOVER

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS

for businesses, organizations, stakeholders and community partners to connect, collaborate and grow together.

Our goal is simple: keep everyone connected, informed and supported. These meetings are about much more than town updates. They provide a forum where local leaders can share announcements, celebrate successes, discuss challenges, exchange ideas and discover new ways to support one another. From construction updates and community events to marketing strategies, business promotions and local partnerships, every conversation helps strengthen our community.

What makes these meetings special is the spirit of collaboration. The businesses and organizations that serve Fortville interact with thousands of people each year and are truly the eyes and ears of our community. By listening to one another and sharing experiences, we gain valuable insight that helps us grow and become a better version of ourselves.

Fortville succeeds when all of us succeed. The power of positivity, communication and teamwork continues to move our community forward. When I use the word community, I place special emphasis on UNITY because that is what defines Fortville. We are strongest when we work together, support one another and celebrate our shared successes.

I am grateful for every business owner, volunteer, organization, stakeholder and resident who invests in Fortville’s future. Together, we are building a strong, connected and thriving community, and I look forward to continuing that journey with all of you.

At Mt Vernon, we believe childhood should be filled with wonder, challenge, friendship, and possibility We believe schools should feel like family And we believe every child deserves to wake up excited to learn in a place where they truly belong

The Marauder journey begins early with our Mini-Marauders preschool program where curiosity is nurtured and confidence begins to bloom. From there, students grow through Fortville Elementary or McCordsville Elementary, continue to Mt. Vernon Intermediate and Middle School, and ultimately cross the stage at Mt. Vernon High School prepared not just for graduation but for life.

And what a journey it is Imagine your child building an entire Gingerbread Town in Fortville Imagine the cheers and celebration of the Kindy 500 at McCordsville Elementary Imagine an eighth grader engineering a way to “Walk on Water,” discovering that creativity and perseverance can make the impossible possible These are not just projects They are moments. Memories. Milestones.

Our small class sizes and exceptional staff retention mean something powerful: your child will be known by name, understood as an individual, and supported by educators who are invested not just in a year but in a future. Relationships matter here. They are the foundation of everything we do.

Inside the classroom, students are challenged to think deeply, collaborate meaningfully, and pursue excellence. Outside the classroom, Marauders shine in athletics, music, academic teams, fine arts, clubs, and service opportunities that help them discover passions and develop leadership skills.

This is a place where students try out for the play, join the robotics team, score the winning goal, perform the solo, design the prototype, lead the service project and are surrounded by peers and adults who cheer them on every step of the way

We are growing as a community, and with that growth comes extraordinary opportunity. Together educators, families, businesses, and community leaders we are building something special: a school system that not only prepares students for tomorrow but helps them flourish today.

When families choose Mt. Vernon, they aren’t just enrolling in a school. They are joining a family. They are choosing belonging. And we welcome them.

The future is bright for our Marauders and we would be honored for your child to be part of it Together, we Engage, Educate, and Empower every student to become their very best Welcome to the Marauder Family #BelongingAtMV

Sincerely,

THE MARAUDER DIFFERENCE WHAT SETS US APART

The Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation (MVCSC) has a commitment to provide a positive educational experience that is tailored to meet the children’s evolving stages of cognitive development. MVCSC wants to prepare children for challenges and opportunities - both inside and outside of the classroom.

MVCSC offers a diverse and challenging curriculum with many opportunities

where students can succeed while providing the benefits of a smaller system. Children have many opportunities through curriculum, clubs, and activities.

MVCSC is the right size to provide the balance of endless options for the students while still receiving personal attention. Students are not just a numbers and are not lost in the shuffle. Mt. Vernon is small enough to get to know the students and encourage them in their journey.

In the heart of Fortville, Indiana, our restaurant is more than just a place to eat — it is a reflection of heritage, passion, and dedication to authentic flavor. As the owner, I bring with me the rich culinary traditions of Guanajuato, Mexico, where food is not only nourishment but a way of bringing people together.

Growing up in Guanajuato, I developed a deep appreciation for the vibrant ingredients, time-honored recipes, and warm hospitality that define Mexican cuisine. Today, I am proud to share those traditions with the Fortville community. Every dish we serve is crafted with care, using fresh ingredients and authentic techniques to deliver a truly memorable dining experience.

Our restaurant has quickly become known for its delicious food, welcoming atmosphere, and commitment to quality.

Whether guests are visiting for a casual meal with family or celebrating a special occasion, we strive to make every visit exceptional. We believe that great food starts with passion, and that passion is reflected in every plate that leaves our kitchen.

Being part of the Fortville community is an honor, and we are grateful for the continued support of our customers. As we grow, our mission remains the same: to share the flavors of Guanajuato, create meaningful connections, and provide a dining experience that feels like home.

We invite everyone to come and experience the taste of tradition, the warmth of genuine hospitality, and the pride we put into every meal.

GEIST MUSIC SCENE

The best musicians have a story behind every song they play. For Indiana musician and vocalist Lindsey Flannery, that story began in the small town of Rushville, where a love for music first took root in church pews and community gatherings.

Growing up in Rushville, Flannery discovered music at an early age, performing in church before eventually taking her talents to local venues. By age 18, she was playing in bars and building the confidence that would launch a musical journey now approaching a decade.

“I am from small-town Rushville, Indiana, and this is where my musical journey began,” Flannery says. “I started off playing music in church and began gigging in bars at age 18. I have been playing music for almost 10 years now.”

Like many musicians, her sound has been shaped by the artists she admired growing up. Two legendary songwriters stand out among her biggest influences: Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.

“As a child, Johnny Cash was one of my biggest musical influences,” she says. “He sparked my interest in old country music. Another influence was Bob Dylan because of his lyrical genius.”

Those influences can still be heard in her performances today.

LINDSEY FLANNERY

Whether she’s delivering a classic country tune, a folk-inspired favorite or a timeless rock anthem, Flannery brings an appreciation for storytelling and authenticity to every song she performs.

When it comes to favorite songs, two classics hold a special place in her heart.

“My favorite two songs to perform live are ‘What’s Up’ by 4 Non Blondes and ‘Brand New Key’ by Melanie Safka,” she says. “‘What’s Up’ was one of the first songs I ever learned to play, and it has stayed with me through the years.”

That connection to music and performance was cemented during a memorable early experience that still stands out today.

“My most memorable performance was my very first time playing live,” Flannery recalls. “It was at an open mic in Shelbyville at a bar called Capone’s. I still get to play there today.”

Now, audiences can catch Flannery performing at Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, one of the Geist area’s favorite destinations for live local entertainment. Guests can expect an evening filled with familiar favorites and crowd-pleasing classics.

“Guests can expect to hear a wide variety of classic hits dating back

to the ’70s and beyond,” she says.

Looking ahead, Flannery continues to expand her musical horizons through new collaborations and projects. She currently performs as part of an acoustic duo and a full band called BIG SKIES, which focuses primarily on classic rock.

“My band, BIG SKIES, plays mainly classic rock, and we look forward to performing throughout the area,” she says.

Fans interested in following her upcoming performances and projects can find the latest schedule and announcements on her Facebook page.

With roots in small-town Indiana, a passion for classic music and nearly a decade of live performance experience, Lindsey Flannery continues to connect with audiences one song at a time. Whether she’s performing a beloved classic or introducing listeners to a new favorite, her genuine love for music shines through every note.

Catch Lindsey Flannery live at Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill and experience an evening of timeless songs, heartfelt performances and the enduring power of live music.
