The Yard is Your Kingdom...
Rule it.

By Barb Augsdorfer
Before
If a man’s home is his castle, then the yard should be his kingdom. Every king and his queen want a beautiful kingdom. Planting a few trees and shrubs and rolling out some soft green sod is nice, but you shouldn’t just plant things and hope for the best. Creating a kingdom takes some planning and work; and having an end result of a beautiful yard is worth the investment. Front and backyards are the extension of the home’s interior and often tell whether the homeowner is detail oriented, spontaneous or avant-garde. Some people loathe yard work and believe anything will do. This person will mow the grass only when necessary, keep the weeds at bay with any convenient herbicide, and maybe plant a tree or two for shade. While it’s certainly acceptable to keep a yard the way an owner sees fit (within the guidelines set by a homeowners’ association), yards designed by a professional landscaper have shown to increase the curb-appeal and value of a home when it comes time to sell. “People want to see nice landscaping and a nice front door. The neater and more complete a house looks on the outside, the more likely a potential buyer will want to take a look inside,” says Cathy Michel, a real-estate agent at Pennington Line Real Estate in Greenwood, Indiana. “If designed and implemented properly, professional landscaping can increase a value of a home 5 to 25 percent or more, depending on how it’s implemented and the quality of the work,” adds Pat Cooley, a landscape designer with Primary Grounds in Greenwood. As Mom always said, “Neatness counts.” However, when the weather turns warm, and after being cooped up inside all winter, humans, like animals roused from hibernation,

Excellence Award from the Indiana Nursery and The sights, scents and Landscape Association for this landscaping even sounds of nature makeover in the Eagle Trace neighborhood. awakening from winter (Photos courtesy of Primary Grounds) signal the beginning of new life. Snow melts and water begins to flow. Grass turns from dormant yellow to vibrant and green. Winter-bare trees put out new leaves and flower buds. However, sometimes Mother Nature needs a little help to keep from getting out of control. A professional landscaper, like a barber or hairstylist for hair, will give the yard a neat, clean look that turns heads. Primary Grounds won the 2012 Green Excellence Award from the Indiana Nursery and Landscape Association for a residential project in the Eagle Trace neighborhood. “The owners called us in the fall of 2009,” recalls Cooley. “It was a fairly complex design as the backyard had a wood deck with a deep sloping downhill and a steep stairway that was unsafe for their small children,” Cooley said. “In the spring of 2010, we worked with the owners over a period of several weeks,” Cooley continues. “We made the yard functional and usable with an enlarged deck and a livable patio. We made an entertainment space for large family functions, demolished a large concrete basketball court that wasn’t being used and created a play area for the children. It became a more functional and safe space for the whole family. The entire project was completed in 6 weeks.” “The design and materials used in any landscaping project is entirely up to the property owner,” says Cooley. “Usually, the property owner gives the company a budget and perhaps an idea April 2012 |

of what he or she wants and we have computer software that can show the homeowner what the finished project will look like even before work begins,” explains Cooley. “A typical residential project can take anywhere from one day to a month, depending upon what the homeowner wants, and of course, the weather.” In addition to a myriad of landscaping products and services that keeps the company busy 3 seasons out of the year, Primary Grounds offers snow plowing and removal and salting services. “We were lucky this past winter was so mild,” Cooley said. “We were able to service some clients’ trees and shrubs with dormant pruning.” Primary Grounds began as a lawn mowing and minor landscaping business in the spring of 1989 by the current owner, Scott Rau, according to the company web site, www.primarygrounds.com. The part-time business that was started to help subsidize a college education soon grew into a full-time job. Over the past 22 years, Rau has transformed the company from a small lawn-care business to a full service lawn-care and landscape company that offers a wide range of commercial and residential services. Primary Grounds is a familyowned business that prides itself in operating on one simple principle: Provide each customer with high-quality personalized service. As a result, they have gained a reputation as one of Indianapolis’s premier residential and commercial landscape companies. Another element of a professionally designed landscape – and one that adds texture, color and even sound to a yard – is known as hardscape. Just as the name implies, hardscape is anything

hard: brick borders, stone benches, walkways, rocks, boulders, and water features such as koi ponds, waterfalls and bubbling boulders. Second to location, location, location in the real-estate agent’s mantra is curb appeal. “It seems like in recent years, hardscapes did not figure into the value On a cool summer night, fire pits add an elegant touch of light, sound and subtle of a home,” says Darren heat to outdoor living spaces. (Photo Wittry, president and CEO courtesy of Ambiance Gardens.) of Ambiance Gardens in Greenwood. “But outdoor living spaces add a lot of value to the home and its marketability. First impressions are everything.” While not every property needs or has room for a koi pond, an addition of a stone border or bedding around trees and shrubs adds that neat and clean factor to a yard. “There’s no better way to give your house punch and create that anchored look than by defining your beds and creating focal points, states Wittry in the Ambiance Gardens web site at www.feeltheambiance.com. “The contrasting colors of the border stone and the mulch or crushed stone within the bed make for a more striking and eye-catching display.” Homeowners who plan to use their yards for nighttime entertaining must not overlook the obvious: lighting. A professional landscape designer can help select and place lighting that is functional, not over-powering and avoids the “runway” effect. When a homeowner is considering hiring a professional landscaping company for his or her yard, it’s always a good idea to see some prior work done by the company. Ambiance Gardens has completed several local projects of note. “We built an outdoor showroom with two large waterfalls, three large bubbling boulders, stone benches, stone pathways and stone walls for McCarty Mulch on SR 37 in Greenwood,” says Wittry. “We also installed a flagstone patio for the butterfly garden at the Greenwood Library, and installed a bubbling boulder and stone benches outside the chapel at Roncalli High School in Indianapolis. Making ¢ents By Kate Rhoten Personal finance. What is it? Personal means the noun or object belongs to a specific person. Finance refers to money or liquid resources of an individual. It shouldn’t be a mystery, but for some of us, it sure can seem that way. How we relate to and manage our money is impacted through life experiences. With this being the first issue of Center Grove Community Newsletter, I want to lay the foundation for this topic. Do you ever really think what money does for us? It doesn’t do anything; it’s about what we choose to do with it. Money doesn’t know what’s in our hearts or what struggles are in our lives. Money will do whatever you want it to; it is amoral. It does not know right from wrong. What is right or wrong is whether or not we are intentional with our money. Do you have a plan? I hope so. Are there areas that may need attention? Perhaps. A household budget is the foundation of managing your finances. It would be a little weird for a business to operate without a budget. Why do we? I know my husband and I did not until we had been married for eight years. Before kids, we would start our Sundays with breakfast at Mimi’s Café and the Sunday paper. We’d eat and then shop. We didn’t discuss money; we lived in the moment. Later, we came to a crisis point that was so severe that we could have lost our home or called it quits as a couple. That was the moment we knew we had to get serious with our finances. Fast forward to the present. I can tell you we are much more dialed into our finances and are able to do things we never would have thought possible. The hardest step is actually sitting down as a team and looking at the income and outgo on paper. Nothing is left out. Include every dollar that is spent: housing, transportation, utilities, food, debt(s), insurance, extracurricular activities, etc. I encourage you to set a budget committee hearing within your home. Married couples are a committee. If you are single, find a friend to help you be accountable. Heck, be accountable to each other. I promise you, it will be eye-opening. Control your money; don’t let your money control you. Which would you rather experience: more month than money left OR more money than month left? It’s all in being proactive and engaged in handling your personal finances. Upcoming articles will dive into the budget areas of utmost importance as well as other topics having to do with money. Start building your foundation for financial success and protect your 4 walls. cg Kate is a financial expert of what to do and not do with money as well as owner of 4 Walls Financial, A Coaching Focused Company. Carol Tumey
Making a Difference
One Life at a Time By Kurt L. Moore
Education has been my life. My aunt, my grandfather, and my Mother were educators. As a young girl, I played school with my friends and I was always the teacher. I honestly never prepared my self to be anything but a teacher. After graduating from Franklin College, my main objective was to obtain a teaching position. There was one open at Center Grove, I interviewed and was lucky to get a call from the Superintendent telling me that I was hired. Honestly, it’s the only job I ever interviewed for.
I
met Carol for the first time at the Center Grove Educational Center. I knew before hand she had achieved great and lasting accomplishments in the world of women’s sports. I was surprised to find Carol to be like anyone you would run into at the supermarket. There was no Superwoman cape – no bullet deflecting bracelets.
She still serves her school and her college to this day. She is still helping direct a pathway for students yet to come.
The person I met was a very attractive, well-groomed, welleducated, polite, and well-dressed woman.
Whereas, On April 30, 2011, in recognition of her contributions to Indiana high school basketball, Carol Tumey, a former Center Grove High School girls’ basketball coach, will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and presented with the St. Vincent Health Silver Medal Award; Whereas, after graduating from Franklin College, 21- year-old Carol Tumey began teaching at Center Grove High School, eager to take the principles she learned in college and apply them in the classroom.
I was meeting Carol to interview her about her remarkable career in sports. She had excelled beyond all normal reason. I was also trying to get a feel for the person herself. I was having trouble with that part of it. There was something missing that I couldn’t explain. Something was not right – not fitting. The answer came with a jolt at three in the morning – I couldn’t sleep, I had my answer. Carol Tumey is ordinary. She lives in a neat and immaculate ordinary home in an ordinary subdivision. She does all the ordinary things we all do – all the mundane things we all do from day to day. That was the part of the equation I had missed. Carol Tumey is an ordinary woman who had attained many and varied extraordinary accomplishments in the world of sports. She was no Superwoman. She was an ordinary woman who possessed extraordinary vision and courage, who then forged forward into territory no person had been before. That is what I couldn’t see. Carol Tumey has a list of awards and honors that would take up more space than this entire article. She has been recognized and honored many times, not only locally, regionally and statewide but nationally as well. 8

AtCenterGrove April2012b.indd 8
It is because of the vision and spirit of Carol Tumey that the Indiana Senate and House of Representatives drafted the following resolution honoring her.
“I played basketball in college and of course with a degree in Health and Physical Education, it seemed appropriate that I could continue or even begin some sort of sports program for the girls at the high school. In those early years, there was an organization for girls called Girls Athletic Association. That was the vehicle for any sort of organized sports program for the girls. In retrospect it was somewhat of a glorified intramural program that included Play Days with other schools.” Whereas, while teaching at Center Grove, Tumey had the idea of starting a girls’ basketball team at the school. The team’s first season was in 1963, when they played a 10-game schedule. “At Center Grove we organized a girl’s basketball team for competition. We were finally able to get competition with a few local schools. The uniforms were merely shorts and a camp shirt style top. Our numbers were black iron on letters. That situation is in no way a reflection of the administration at Center Grove, it’s

just the way it was at that time. My Principal, Mel Vandermeer was in fact supportive of me, although I know that there were times when he wondered what I was trying to do.” Whereas, as it became clear that the Center Grove girls were interested in playing competitively, other schools like Greenwood, Franklin, Whiteland, Southport, and Beech Grove joined with their own basketball teams. “In all honesty, I never really thought about starting a sports revolution, I just wanted the girls to have opportunities for competition, opportunities for sportsmanship, developing friendships, developing skills – CAROL TUMEY (on her award selection into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame) that would help them stay fit and have a healthy lifestyle. I wanted them to believe that you could be competitive and still be attractive females. I will admit that I had, and still have, a competitive spirit and it soon rubbed off on the girls. It was rewarding to see other schools begin to put together teams.” Whereas, Carol Tumey will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on April 30, 2011. Her career at Center Grove High Whereas, In Tumey’s sixth season, the 1968-69 team finished the School and her induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame season undefeated, establishing themselves as the first of many is a fitting honor, given her impressive contributions to the sport truly great Center Grove High School girls’ basketball teams. during her impressive and productive tenure: “I knew we had a talented team of girls. The Indiana General Assembly congratulates Carol Tumey on her induction into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Whereas, through the course of her career at Center Grove, Tumey coached basketball, volleyball, cross country, and track and field. “My selection into the Basketball Hall of Fame came very She also served as the school’s Intramural Director and Assistant unexpected. Carol Tumey KLM: What has been your husband Dale’s role in your career? “He was with me at many track practices and traveled to most away meets as well. He often brought me meals and we would eat our evening meal together on the gymnasium bleachers, the track or football field. I have been blessed to have a husband who has been such a supporter, confidante, and helper. He supported me in my career decisions, even when he knew it would mean less time together for us and less home cooked meals. Because of his support, I was able
to move ahead with my career knowing that I had his support and backing.” Carol Tumey’s career at Center Grove spanned four decades. Carol is an ordinary woman who possessed extraordinary vision and had the opportunity to work along side many others who believed in her and followed her pioneering path. Carol is revered in the Center Grove community. Each and every girl or boy who went through one of her athletic programs reveres her. Carol is special and when you meet her, you will understand why. KLM: Carol, did you at any time in your career feel or think the vocation you had chosen was not the right one? “Every individual takes moments of reflection at various times during his or her career. I sat at my desk and wondered if I’d made the best choice of a career. Did I choose the right college to prepare me for that career? Had I thanked all the people along the way who had helped and guided me in that path?
Proven expertise for uncertain markets. FEE-ONLY PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT SERVICES FOR INDIVIDUALS AND INSTITUTIONS
At the end of the reflection, I knew, (as I told myself), YES, I did make the right career choice. YES, beyond doubt, I did choose the right college. YES, I did the right thing by accepting a position as a teacher at Center Grove for my first position, YES, I did the right thing by staying in that school corporation, even though I had several opportunities to go other places and YES, I felt that I did the very best I could do, at the moment, in every situation. I have been blessed beyond measure. Would I do it all over again? In a heart beat…in a heart beat.” cg

Corporate Cup Challenge Raises Funds for Local Charities The fourth annual Corporate Cup Challenge was held in March in Greenwood and Center Grove. The event benefits 2 Johnson County charities each year. Local companies enter teams in the competition in 9 different activities ranging from euchre to soccer. Awards go to the first 3 places in each event and an overall Cup awarded to the company with the most points in each of 2 divisions. Endress+Hauser won the National Conference for larger companies, and CertaPro Painters won the American Conference for companies with fewer than 50 employees. The activities are spread across 3 venues, Southern Bowl, Community Life Center, and The Gathering Place. This year Christian Help Inc. and Kids Against Hunger will share the proceeds. Christian Help Inc. (christianhelpinc.org) is an interdenominational organization of Christians serving the needs of the homeless and near-homeless in Johnson County. Kids Against Hunger (kah-greenwood.org) packs and delivers nutritious meals for kids in Johnson County as well as around the world. The Corporate Cup Challenge has raised tens of thousands of dollars in its first 4 years. Each charity will receive over $5,000 as a result of this event. Finding a Tutor by Joe Wadlington When my mother was growing up, people rarely got straight “A’s.” This had nothing to do with the quality of the students or the education. But back then an “A” meant exceptional work and it was very uncommon to be “exceptional” in every single category. These days, with inflated grades and an effort to not leave students behind, children are receiving more “A’s” than ever.
Where did you begin your search for a tutor?
So what is a parent to do? Naturally, no one wants his or her child slipping behind the pack. It can also be difficult for a child to truly shine when the bar is lowered. Many parents look for tutoring or private lessons to give their children a cutting edge. There are many justifications for this; money spent on tutors now may be money saved by scholarships later, maybe private school is just a little too costly but you’re child’s current school is just a little too slow or maybe a parent seeks extracurricular help to keep their child on par. Whatever the reasons for the tutor, attaining one can be a confusing first step. Here is what local parents Shari Finnell and Jody Mugele went through when they realized they wanted to provide their kids with something extra.
Finnell: “Referrals! I thought about checking out some of the more formal sources for tutoring, but decided to approach friends and co-workers first for some guidance. “
Mugele: “Locally. I trust friends to let me know who is qualified for the job and who might be a good fit with my kids personalities. If I don’t find someone that way, I’ll look for college students who need to log hours for community service or class.”
How was the response/How easily did you find available tutors? Mugele: “Quick. I knew my standards and expectations going in (maybe they were low-ish) but it helped get what I needed quickly.” Finnell: “Fortunately, it didn’t take that long for me to get a personal recommendation for Jonathan Bernardi, who also teaches math at a nearby community college. He was highly recommended by one of my co-workers who had used him as a tutor for one of his continuing education classes.”
What qualifications did you need in your tutor? Mugele: “1. Someone who understands my kids are individuals and who will know how to motivate them. 2. Someone who had a specific depth of experience/knowledge about the subject.” Finnell: “It was important to me that I found someone who would push my son without turning him off, as well as someone who had the right skills and aptitude for explaining college prep mathematics. Since I was also looking for someone who could help him with his study habits; again, to help prepare him for college, I thought it was important that it was something he could easily relate to as well as respect.”
Indianapolis moms Shari Finnell (left) and Jody Mugele (right) enlisted the help of a tutor for their children who were struggling in school. Writer Joe Wadlington asks them both for some advice in hopes of helping other parents looking for help.

from www.wzpl.com What other qualities were factors? (Age, gender, availability, etc.) Mugele: “Money matters. Location matters. Availability matters. I’m big on allowing my kids to be as independent as possible, so one consideration for me was if my kids could walk to their tutor’s studio or home.” Finnell: “I preferred a male so that my son could relate better. Personality was huge … the right “match” from that perspective was a huge consideration. Age wasn’t a huge factor … I wanted someone with experience, but yet who is able to get across to someone my son’s age. Also, I wasn’t necessarily looking for a formal schedule (i.e. meet once a week on Mondays) but rather someone who was willing to work with us as needed.”
Did the relationship with your tutor turn out well or did you have to look other places? Mugele: “Worked out very well! My kids have missed tutors when they’ve outgrown them and they still keep in touch.”
Stop your heavy period and restart your life
Finnell: “The relationship turned out really well … it clicked from the beginning, which is saying a lot because my son wasn’t looking forward to working with a mentor. Jonathan took the time to draw up on his own personal experiences in high school to break the ice with my son, which was a huge factor in setting the tone. He also talked about favorite books that they had in common. Because of the tutor’s passion for math and other subjects my son shares an interest in, the tutoring relationship has proven to be even more successful than originally planned.”
Did your child’s work improve? Mugele: “Yes!” Finnell: “Yes. Jonathan has helped my son get over some ‘humps’ in his math classes, as well as encouraged him to improve his study habits in other areas.” Tutors and instructors can be found throughout the city and suburbs. Start your search by asking friends for referrals but also make a point to ask current instructors and schools. They will have listings of tutors readily available. cg

“Boys’ Jungle Garden Containers” My great nephews, Max & Eli, love to help me in my flower gardens. We have tried each spring to start some flowers from seed with varying success. Usually, with not much luck. After we failed again last year with a particularly fancy seed starter kit, I decided we needed to go bigger with the seeds. We bought really big seeds (tuber bulbs) to grow a jungle of elephant ear plants (colocasi gigantea). Max & Eli picked out colorful pots and they each potted a seed to water and watch as the plant emerged and the big leaves unfurled. OK, we did lose one plant, but we potted up 3 so all were happy. We then all watched with amazement as the plants grew and grew. The boys soon had a jungle on their patio. The giant elephant ear plants were the talk of their neighborhood. Their dad wintered the bulbs in the garage so we will be planting them again this spring. To add to their patio jungle, this spring we are going to try Cobra lilies (Arisaema griffithii). Wow, big purple flowers that looks like a Cobra ready to strike, and the best part, it is a carnivorous plant. Boys and a bug eating plant. You can’t go wrong with this kind of pairing. Next month we will share tips on our Butterfly Window Box planting process; again boys & bugs. cg Nancy’s love of flower gardening intensified while living in Holland and was perfected with Master Gardener courses.
