s she approaches the foul line, she knows everyone in the gym is looking at her. She’s not fazed. She wears No. 1 on her jersey for a reason. She’s been here a hundred times. Her only goal is to put the Rehab Hospital of Indiana Racers one point further in the lead.
Her enthusiasm and joy fill the gym. Knowing her story highlights just how remarkable she truly is. Born with spina bifida, a birth defect where the spinal column fails to close properly, Kimi spent four years in an understaffed Chinese orphanage.
She takes a deep breath, dribbles twice, locks her eyes on the front of the rim and arches the ball toward the basket. Swish!
“I don’t remember China,” Kimi says.
Kimberly Michelle Perry — her friends and family call her Kimi — turns around to play defense, navigating her wheelchair effortlessly between other athletes into the defensive half of the court. From jump ball to the final buzzer, the smile never leaves her face. “Parents of players on other teams tell us they always root for their own kids, of course,” Kimi’s mom says, “unless they’re playing against Kimi. ‘We love rooting for Kimi!’ they say.” Who wouldn’t want to root for Kimi? 6 | January 2026 | TownePost.com
Her first memory is when her adoptive parents, Mike and Kathy Perry, arrived to bring her home to Avon. The Perrys, who had grandchildren by the time they adopted Kimi in 2011, found room in their hearts to grow their family through adoption, inspired by their Christian faith in a time when they could have been excused for deciding to settle down and enjoy retirement.
surgeries and hundreds of hours of physical, occupational and speech therapy to help her develop. Thanks to Kimi’s hard work and the unconditional love of her parents, Kimi has become an exceptional — and busy — young woman.
The Perrys certainly didn’t choose an easy road. They understood they would encounter physical and developmental obstacles together.
A family friend told the Perrys about wheelchair basketball.
As expected, Kimi has required multiple

“I WENT TO A GAME. I WAS TALKING TO THE PLAYERS, AND THEY ASKED ME, ‘DO YOU REALLY WANT TO PLAY?’ I STARTED SPINNING MY CHAIR AROUND, AND I SAID, ‘YES!’” - KIMMI PERRY spinning my chair around, and I said, ‘Yes!’” She tried out and made the team. Learning the game wasn’t easy. Kimi had to train to build the upper-body strength to launch the ball over the 10-foot hoop and the chair skills to keep up with the fast-paced action.
“At first, I didn’t know anything about wheelchair basketball,” Kimi admits. “My coaches had to teach me the rules.” They are the same as basketball: five on five, four quarters, the highest score wins. Traveling is a turnover; players may push

It was during practice.” Kimi kept practicing and playing. “It got easier,” Kimi says. “I was so happy when I made my first basket in a game. All the fans were like, ‘Yay, Kimi!’ I was very excited.”

Her favorite basketball memory is when she scored a game-winning, buzzer-beater basket. “Even my coaches were like, ‘Yeah!’” Kimi says, arms in the air and a smile across her face. Scoring is a regular occurrence now, yet each celebration is just as genuine as the first. The Perrys have traveled all over the U.S. for competitions: Ohio, Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia. Last season, her team earned a

Knowing she can be timid against boys, her parents encourage her never to hold back. During last year’s national tournament, Kimi got to play in an all-girls showcase. “Kimi grabbed the tipoff, went down the court and scored,” Kathy recalls. “She stole the inbound pass and scored again.” Kimi lit it up during the 10-minute scrimmage. Her parents wondered what had come over her. “I don’t get nervous playing against girls,”
start your day with a delicious morning routine Kimi says. Kimi will get plenty of chances to play against the girls in the future. After this, her final season on varsity with the RHI Racers, she will join Cincinnati’s adult women’s team, the Dragons. Their coach — a wheelchair basketball player since 1999 and a former member of the U.S. National Team — has seen her play. He recruited her early. Asked if she enjoys traveling, Kimi shrugs. “I like to play basketball,” she says. Minutes on the court more than make up for hours on the highway. The trip she’s looking forward to most is the journey across the stage at Avon High School’s graduation in May. She plans to ditch the wheelchair and walk on her own power. She’s looking forward to shaking Principal Matt Shockley’s hand and posing for a photo with Superintendent Dr. Scott Wyndham, diploma in hand. “One of the best things we did is to enroll her in Avon Schools,” Kathy says. Kimi’s first day of school occurred with several weeks left in pre-kindergarten. “We saw a huge change in her during those six weeks,” Kathy adds. “We wish we would have started her earlier.” In addition to crisscrossing the nation

with the Dragons, Kimi has big plans. She dreams of a job at Riley Hospital, where she spent so much time as a patient. She’ll continue practicing her violin; she’s been in Avon’s orchestra since fifth grade. She will keep teaching in the first grade Sunday school class she loves. She’d also love to meet her basketball hero, Caitlin Clark. As they watch from the bleachers, Mike and Kathy beam with the immeasurable pride, gratitude and wonder of parents who have had a front-row seat to a miracle. “You can’t stop her,” Mike says. He’s right. You can’t stop Kimi. The courage, resilience, joy and faith that have brought her this far will propel her into an even brighter future.

GREEKS REVIVED AVON NATIVE REOPENS BELOVED PIZZERIA Writer / Ashley Watters Photographer / Avon Chamber of Commerce
Greek’s Pizzeria is a brand known for its vast menu options and the hometown feel of local pizza mingled with Greek-inspired flavors. As a senior in high school, Jacob Szumski, an Avon native, began his journey with Greek’s Pizzeria as a delivery driver. During that time, he discovered a love of making pizza and a true appreciation for the culture of neighborhood pizzerias. So much so that, when he turned 18, he bought Greek’s Pizzeria in Crawfordsville. Since 2022, Szumski has helped turn around three different struggling Greek’s Pizzeria locations. His love for business and community has made him a thriving partner, and he excels at turning the tide. After a few years of commuting to work in Crawfordsville, Szumski noticed his own community-based Greek’s wasn’t thriving. After its closure, he took the opportunity to reopen a Greek’s Pizzeria in Avon. He and partners Emily and Steve Hawthorne converted the old Lou Malnati’s into a Greek’s, and the three set their sights on building a new image from the ground up. “Since my delivery days at Plainfield, it’s always been a goal to have a store close to home,” Szumski says. “Close to family and

friends. When the last location closed down due to external issues, I started looking for opportunities to bring Greek’s back to Avon in a new location.” The Avon location offers carry-out only, but Szumski promises that the new spot at 8806 E. U.S. Highway 86 offers only the highestquality pizza, and they’re steadfastly focused on customer service. The doors opened at their new location on October 27, 2025. “I heard from many people that the last Avon Greek’s struggled with their service,” Szumski says. “The food was good, but they were slow, not the most welcoming and lacked communication. We aren’t going to be perfect, but we’re going to do everything we can to change the narrative of Greek’s Pizzeria in Avon. Faster service, smiling faces and quick response time is what we’re focused on.” A young entrepreneur, Szumski, alongside his partners, wants to use their presence to
help foster community around Avon. Along with dropping coupons and food at local businesses, he plans to sell slices at local gatherings and be a constant presence at chamber events. He also hopes his story will be an inspiration to other kids. When he set out to become a business owner at 18, not everyone took him seriously. In the last four years, he’s owned four Greek’s Pizzeria stores, and he plans to make that five in the coming year. “I have a passion for helping kids,” Szumski adds. “I want to be the older brother that every kid wished they had. I want to show them that it is possible to chase their dreams. A mix of persistence, hard work and being at the right place at the right time has given me a very powerful story, and I want to share that with others.” Altogether, entrepreneurship suits Szumski. Not everyone appreciates the pressure of
a rush, but he feels most at home in the middle of a Friday night rush with 50 orders on the screen and the phone ringing in the background. Although he feels the daily pressure that comes with owning a business, Szumski wouldn’t have it any other way. And Szumski knows more than most that it takes a village. Currently, his best friend is the store manager in Avon, and Szumski entrusts him with helping to set things on the right path at his store. His parents can also frequently be found running the Greek’s tent at local events. Ultimately, it’s his staff that he credits with keeping the lights on, a group that he views as family. Szumski and his partners hope Greek’s Pizzeria in Avon will be the reason you choose pizza tonight. Visit greekspizzeria.com to learn more. TownePost.com | January 2026 | 17

NEW PLAN ELEVATES HENDRICKS COUNTY TOURISM Writer / Ashley Watters
Hendricks County is a beautiful place to live and a wonderful destination to visit. No one knows that more than the group over at Visit Hendricks County, a team whose sole focus is to demonstrate to others that the county is a visit-worthy destination. They also strive to make sure that Hendricks County residents are happy and thriving. That’s exactly what they’re hard at work doing with their bold new strategic plan. An organization with roots dating back to 1998, Visit Hendricks County is solely funded by a pass-through visitor tax. The group is given funds from a hotel tax enacted in 1996, creating a model specifically designed to keep visitors funneling into Hendricks County. But
mostly, the group’s love of Hendricks County drives their passion for bringing people in to see what the county has to offer.
A recent overhaul of the organization’s strategic plan includes four new areas of focus, based on community feedback, staff and industry input, and — for the first Longtime employees Jaime Bohler Smith, time — resident sentiment. Those include executive director and CEO, Josh Duke, senior organizational excellence, destination communications manager, and the rest of the development, awareness and marketing, and staff spend their days strategically planning connectivity of industry and community. This how they will bring tourists into Hendricks roadmap means Visit Hendricks County has County and help support local businesses and some exciting new things coming in the new year. residents. “We are heavily invested in locally owned businesses that need support,” Duke says. “Everything we do is geared towards helping those businesses thrive and giving them what they need to succeed.”
“Our goal is to bring value to our community, vitalize the places that we live and enhance the visit for anyone traveling to see us,” Smith says. The resident sentiment data revealed that TownePost.com | January 2026 | 19
the top key priorities were fun, connectivity, inclusivity and managed growth. Residents indicated they want more events, outdoor experiences and a broader culinary scene. Visit Hendricks County is developing programs to support those initiatives. The group also plans to provide enhanced support for local businesses, helping boost their marketing efforts and connecting them to affordable resources. Strides in destination development have also been made through additional investments such as accessibility — in partnership with Wheel the World — to make it easier for visitors and residents to get around Hendricks County. “We’re evaluating the physical accessibility of locations and will provide recommendations for how businesses can make improvements, not just for wheelchairs, but also for moms with strollers and those with sight, hearing or sensory issues,” Smith says.
Jamie presenting updates to staff
To help bring all of these new initiatives to life, the group has expanded its team to add three new roles, including a director of destination development, a senior research and data manager, and a partner services coordinator, bringing its total team to 11. “We’re transforming what it means to be a destination leadership organization,” Smith adds. “We’ve been Visit Hendricks County for 14 years, but we really wanted to put some weight to those words and provide more value. Now, instead of just marketing to visitors, we have new initiatives to communicate locally and keep residents informed of what’s going on. We really want to lean into our residents and help improve their quality of life by bringing in more tourism.” The group is certainly a leader in the destination industry. Over time, they turned what was originally a trifold brochure into a robust 40-page magazine that outlines all Hendricks County has to offer. This magazine won them the award for Best Visitors Guide in 2024. As a result of their hard work, visitor spending has risen from $228.9M in 2013 to $370.3M in 2023 — a nearly $150M increase over a decade. Alongside those efforts, Duke devotes much 20 | January 2026 | TownePost.com

of his time to the Insider blog, an undertaking that has been wildly successful and a resource for those inside and outside Hendricks County. Insider blogs are written by residents, for residents, and serve as a forum for communicating about local events, restaurants, new attractions and upcoming things to know. All contributors are local and many have businesses or work full time within the community. The Insider program has since expanded to include short-form video, and five new Insiders joined the team in December. “The Insider has been extremely successful,” Duke says. “We’ve found that people don’t want to watch videos or hear from Visit Hendricks County. They want organic, authentic people talking about where they live.” The groundbreaking Insider blog has even led to speaking engagements for Duke and has helped set the standard for Midwest tourism blogging. In addition to these new initiatives, Visit Hendricks County also distributes a holiday gift guide, summer and fall campaigns with things to do, and two monthly newsletters — one for visitors and locals and another for industry partners to keep everyone keyed into what’s going onrand upcoming opportunities.
