After graduating from Avon High School, she got her Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida, and received her Doctor of Optometry degree at Indiana University in Bloomington. Allspaw also uses her exams to educate her patients. For instance, she encourages patients to wear sunglasses for UV protection and not to smoke, as there is a link between smoking and macular degeneration. Prevention is paramount given that in most cases macular degeneration is irreversible.

It’s not unusual for a patient to come in seeking a prescription for a new pair of glasses, and for Allspaw to detect something and catch it before it can cause vision issues.

“Those are opportune times to get on top of it so it doesn’t lead to a vision issue down the line,” she says. Frequently a patient may come in with a complaint and Allspaw may find, for instance, cataracts, a condition that requires surgery.

“The next time I saw her, she was all smiles as she had been out shopping and even started to drive a bit,” Allspaw says. “You could tell what a difference [the glasses] had made for her.”

“I don’t consider myself solely a pediatric optometrist, but I do see quite a few kiddos,” Allspaw says. “It’s fun to see the kids grow.” She invested heavily in technology in order to help diagnose and manage a number of eye conditions such as dry eye, macular degeneration and glaucoma. She also has optomap ultra-widefield retinal imaging, so she can get a good look at the back of the eye without having to dilate.

For many patients, Allspaw is their first point of contact with the health-care system. Hence, she not only screens for eye diseases and conditions, but often also discovers other potential health issues as well by examining the eyes.

“The eye really is a peek into your overall body

“When we’re doing a full health check of the eyes, especially an exam of the retina, it’s one of the only places in the body where we can get a good look at blood vessels directly,” says Allspaw, noting that she can see signs in the eyes of common conditions like complications with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, clotting disorders and some cancers.

“The town has changed a lot, but I still really enjoy this community and all of the positive things about living here,” Allspaw says.

“Sometimes the complications it causes, however, can be treated to help make the patient’s visual outcome better,” Allspaw says. Her favorite part of her practice is when the treatment she provides improves the quality of life for a patient. She treated a woman who had a traumatic brain injury from a car accident, and as a result suffered from migraines and dizziness, which prevented her from driving or being in direct sunlight. Allspaw used a combination of specially colored, filtered lenses and modifications to her prescription. When the woman put her new glasses on, she cried tears of joy.

At Mathnasium, the staff members help students in pre-K through calculus level. Last year a freshman came to them who had failed geometry. He repeated the class over the summer while simultaneously working with instructors at Mathnasium. Though he was initially scared that he wouldn’t pass again, he scored an 85%.

Speakman agrees, especially since it ended in a top-12 performance at the World Championship Finals.

“It’s an escape from the real world,” Shelton adds. “You can express it the way you interpret it.”

“Music is a special language all its own,” Raney says. “It expresses feelings that you can’t quite put into words.”

“Traveling through the mountains before a show makes those overnight bus rides worth it,” Frazier says. “The shows remind you why you’re doing this activity.”

Shelton’s favorite aspect of DCI was getting the chance to meet new people from across the country. Raney says the culmination of hard work is his favorite part.

“I loved performing instead of watching,” he says.

After a shortened tour in 2021 and no tour in 2020 due to COVID-19, this year’s DCI was a celebratory comeback that celebrated an appreciation for music.

“I think music portrays things that we think about but can’t naturally say,” Frazier says. “It’s a way of expression that speaks for us. It’s almost as if it paints a portrait in your head that only you would understand.”

In your profession, what is something that excites you the most?

A: I get a great deal of fulfillment out of seeing young people discover their inner artist and develop their self-esteem. I love seeing that spark that comes from accomplishment. I have been teaching fine arts for more than 34 years, and whether it’s music, dance or visual art, the creative arts are engaging and leave students mentally and physically motivated to move forward in their lives. Color, tone and movement cannot be substituted by any other activity. A: In the first few months of dental school, we had a required ethics lecture to attend, and the best piece of advice I’ve ever been given came from that day. They said the difference between good and great usually isn’t very much.

A: Mental health had become stifled until recent years, but due to the pandemic, mental health took on a transformation.historical The barriers that once surrounded mental health are being dismantled at an accelerated rate. Stigma and misconceptions are now replaced with more understanding and acceptance. Whether in the workplace, school, church or the community, mental health has seen increased awareness through all sorts of digital and social media platforms. Even the government has prioritized mental health with expanded mental-health coverage and awareness campaigns. Through restructuring the way care is provided, we have witnessed how mental health, once hospital-based care, transformed into a community-based care system. Expanded services through online formats and community-based programs have improved access to care for anyone struggling with mental-health concerns.

A: Watching our students at first struggle but then succeed and grow is one of our greatest rewards as business owners. Many times our students enter with low confidence, but as they improve in their math abilities, we see their confidence begin to grow. When students light up and get that aha moment, it makes everything we do worthwhile. At Mathnasium we get to celebrate those moments on a regular basis, and the confidence they grow at Mathnasium will help them in all aspects of life.

What has been the biggest hurdle or challenge you have faced in your career?

A: For me, chiropractic has never just been about working on the back. There are plenty of other adjunctive modalities to help maintain a painfree life, which is a focus in my practice. This is one big reason I added acupuncture to my practice years ago. More recently I’ve seen a need to go back to school and study functional medicine. Finding the root cause of symptoms integrates perfectly with both chiropractic and acupuncture.

Hearing loss can lead to frustration and isolation. Navigating the right options for treatment can be overwhelming and this can cause considerable delays in getting help. Because of that, professional and individualized hearing care have always been my passion in audiology. Establishing SLA Audiology’s reputation as a trusted resource to our patients and the community we share is my favorite thing about living and working in Hendricks County. Caring for the whole patient with the highest standard of care is SLA Audiology’s differentiator, and we enjoy changing the expectation of what hearing health care should be.

Honestly, I don’t think any description I can give will successfully detail how frequently these words cross my mind. While it is often tempting to stop at “good enough,” sometimes it is just an extra two minutes, or a little bit of hard work or ingenuity, that will result in great work, of which you can be very proud. Not only does it make you proud, but in many cases, that extra effort benefits those around you - in my case, my patients. As I work to polish a filling or to adjust a person’s bite, it is easy to say, “This is acceptable,” and so much more satisfying to give that little bit extra. This advice pushes me to be better every day, encourages me not to be stagnant in my learning, and has helped grow my empathy for those I meet.

A: I’m originally from Sullivan, Indiana, but in 2002 my family and I made Brownsburg our home. In June of 2021, after an 18-year career in multiple areas of audiology, I opened SLA Audiology, an independently owned private practice and hearing health-care clinic in Brownsburg.

A: The secret sauce is intentionality. As leaders, we may think to ourselves that an employee is not meeting our expectations and we are frustrated, but the employee is unaware. We all want to be liked and we don’t want to offend others, so it is easier to keep our frustrations to ourselves and not voice them. My mindset is that it is actually unfair to not tell them if I am unhappy with their work. It is selfishly easier to not address wrong behavior, but every person deserves the chance to know what they can do to be better

A: I’d have to saymyself. Whether it’s feeling inadequate or struggling with comparison, I am always trying to train myself to not allow such things to hold me back. I’ve come to realize that I am my own worst enemy. Realizing this years ago has allowed me to jump over some high hurdles and face challenges with grace and strength.

One of our favorites was fixing up a vehicle in partnership with Recycled Rides to give to Family Promise for a family in need. God’s been so good, and we feel privileged to be able to share that blessing with those around us.

A: The best piece of advice I have ever been given is from a mentor that said, “Your name is all you have in this business. Make it a good one.” Every day I think about this and try to make the best choices to uphold my name, values and reputation.

A: One of my favorite memories was helping a traumatic brain injury patient. She had been suffering with severe light sensitivity, migraines, dizziness, double vision, and was unable to drive for approximately one year after being in a car accident. It was really limiting her everyday functioning, and she wouldn’t even really go outdoors because the sun bothered her too much. I researched how best to help her with special rose-tinted lenses and prisms in her glasses. She had the largest smile on her face when she picked up her new glasses. I saw her a couple weeks later, and she told me that she had been out shopping with her sister and was already starting to slowly reacclimate to driving. New specialty glasses were life-changing for her.

As a child, Kristi Lee had no aspirations to work in radio. In fact, the only reason she signed up for a radio class was because a classmate at Ben Davis High School suggested she do so. That one decision altered the trajectory of her life.

She began working part time on nights and weekends in 1982 at Q95, finishing her shift at 6 a.m., when “The Bob & Tom Show,” a top-rated morning program, was starting. When they decided to hire a news girl in 1987, Lee was the perfect choice, as she liked to banter with them as they chatted between their shifts. That was 35 years ago and she’s still going strong. Lee says she feels blessed.

Through the years she’s worked every shift imaginable. In her 20s she enjoyed working from 4 p.m. to midnight, because she could go straight from work to Broad Ripple to socialize. Working mornings, however, gave her time with her children in the evenings. Not that rising at 4 a.m. is always fun.

For a while she worked full-time at “The Bob & Tom Show,” then traveled on the weekends for ESPN, catching a flight to the east coast on Friday as soon as she got off the air and returning on Sunday. For two years, Lee also hosted a podcast called “Kristi Lee Uninterrupted.” Born with an unfailing work ethic, she worked seven days a week, including holidays, until her two children were born (they are now 24 and “A20).lot

In addition to her vast body of work, the Hall of Fame honor acknowledges her commitment to community involvement. She’s on the board at Ascension St. Vincent Foundation and the Indianapolis Zoo, she volunteers at Second Helpings, she’s participated in countless golf outings, and she has hosted events for charity galas. “It’s hard for me to say no,” she says.

“During the break, Dolly was brainstorming baby names with me,” Lee says. “She was so sweet and acted like she’d known me my whole life.”

“I’ll keep doing this until Tom quits, and he’s got a 6-year-old if that tells you anything,” she says with a chuckle. “Seriously, there’s no reason to leave my job. I love going to work every day. My radio family is my life. Those are my people.”

In her free time Lee likes to read, garden, golf, travel and practice Pilates. Though she openly admits that she can’t cook worth a darn, she’s proud of her accomplishments and grateful for the life she’s “Honestly,lived.

More imaging may be needed. If a mammogram is abnormal, extra imaging may be needed. Typically a doctor will order a diagnostic mammogram if unusual changes are detected in the breast, such as a lump, breast pain, change in breast size or shape, and nipple discharge. Diagnostic mammograms will provide the radiologist with more detailed views of the breast to help determine if cancer is present. A breast ultrasound may also be used in combination with a mammogram to further work up a breast finding.

The dynamic duo took over the academy in 2014, teaching 70 to 80 kids in recreational and competitive dance. The studio offers tumbling and various styles of dance, including tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, modern, pre-pointe, pointe, hip-hop, creative movement, and combination classes for ages 18 months to adult.

Premier Academy of the Performing Arts, owned by Meaghan and Dionne Molsberry, is a gem in Hendricks County. This motherdaughter team prides itself on running a family-friendly and allinclusive studio. But don’t be fooled - their competitive edge was clear this summer when they brought home no less than 20 trophies from a national competition.

The studio team members pride themselves on their accomplishments, and their pile of trophies from nationals includes seven national champions and four big-show winners. However, for Meaghan and Dionne, the studio is much more than a place to win trophies.

“We advocate for these kids all the time,” Meaghan says. “We had to learn that advocating for ourselves was another way to advocate for Meaghanthem.”

“My job at the studio is to hug kids, encourage them and pass out suckers,” Dionne says, laughing. “I get paid in hugs. It’s the best job

And Dionne is that person. She works the front desk, jumps in when she’s needed, and supports Meaghan and all the dancers however she can.

“I saw two distinct paths,” Meaghan says. “I saw my dreams, the ones I always fought for, and I saw the safe path.” She ran the idea past Dionne, who assured Meaghan they should go for it. When her dad passed, he left her the exact amount of money she needed for the down

Meaghan opted to stay in Indy after college to spend time with her mom and increasingly sick father. She took an opportunity to help a friend teach classes at her studio during that time, and stumbled upon a new discovery about herself - she loved to teach.

Meaghan was in the second grade when her father was diagnosed with cancer. At such a young age, she used dance as a getaway so she could cope emotionally with the trials in her family’s life.

The studio owner called her one day to inform her that she was moving, and to ask Meaghan if she would like to buy the studio.

“We are blessed more than you could ever imagine by these families and our community,” Dionne says. “We try to be really open and draw anyone in who wants a positive dance experience. We are here for the kids on their journey to adulthood.”

“We’re a dance family,” Meaghan says. “I wanted to create that family feel and culture here. The most important person here will be the person they see when they walk through that door.”

“It’s so cool when we’re at a convention and famous people call my daughter by name,” Dionne says. “I just love watching when she’s dancing or making a name for herself in the industry.”

While Meaghan wasn’t competitive, she never had stage fright and basically lived at the studio throughout her youth, going after school and on the weekends. Her mom worked the front desk to help pay for more classes. For Meaghan it wasn’t even just about dance. Dance was a tool to help her cope with life.

“I’ve been dancing since I was 2 years old,” Meaghan says. “My mom took me to a super-tiny studio off 38th Street. I walked in there and never looked back.”

the past 18 years, this journey has given Tom and I the opportunity to work beside each other and with our family in our community, taught us the value of teamwork, brought us new friends, and taught us many valuable life lessons,” Jeanne says. “Mostly, however, it’s given us a tremendous sense of joy and gratitude.”

Through the years, Jeanne has taken part in women-owned business groups, and has found that many women agree that the primary challenge most women face is striking a healthy work-life balance. “I love being a part of a community of women supporting one another,” she says.

“Connecting people and businesses in the community is a source of pride for us,” Jeanne says. “It’s our hope to bring a publication to readers’ coffee tables that is as enjoyable to read as it is filled with positive information showcasing all that makes each community great.”

She resolves to place some focus each day on the areas of life that are most important to her, which include health, family, spirituality, creative development and socializing. Jeanne, an avid reader, is part of a neighborhood book club and has just become a Little Free Library steward, installing a book exchange in her front yard. She also loves painting and mosaic art, travel, yoga, and walking her dog,

The Britts initially operated their business out of a spare bedroom, with Tom focusing on sales, Jeanne managing the finances, and their small children folding and sealing the newsletters as they were back then - just six pages. As the company started to grow, the pair saw the potential for this model to work in other communities. Therefore, in 2015 they converted Towne Post to a franchise system. To date, they have 18 publications and 10 franchisees (some publishers own multiple territories).

As president of Towne Post, Jeanne’s duties are numerous. She considers supporting Tom in business strategy, developing efficient processes, and the management and reporting of network franchise finances to be the foundation of her daily role. “The franchisees’ individual successes, as well the success of our network, is our top priority,” she says.

Though Jeanne considers herself to be a bit of an introvert, being part of the Towne Post team has helped to coax her out of her shell. As a result, she has been involved with a number of community events such as co-founding Vines for Life to benefit local cancer charities in Geist, and working with the Geist Half Marathon organizers in its early days.

“I’m in awe of women business owners who do it all on their own. Balance seems to be the one thing that I’m consistently pursuing, and not just because I’m an accounting person.”

“It’s been exciting,” says Jeanne, who has been working in the accounting side of the publishing industry for more than 25 years. “It was our hope to put out a publication that readers loved and held onto - not one they pitched into the recycling bin on their way from the mailbox through the garage.”

t’s the time for soft flannels, cozy cardigans, pumpkin-spiced lattes, getting lost in corn mazes and watching football games. I love being bundled up in a new coat and scarf, the crunch of leaves beneath my boots and sitting outside at a bonfire on those chilly, moonlit nights. I can’t resist going on a hayride with family with a cup of warm cider in hand. You know what that means? It’s fall. It’s time to embrace the change of seasons. Here are 12 must-do ideas to complete your fall bucket list.

Grab a basket and visit the local apple orchard. Pick your favorite variety of apples and stop at the apple store for caramel apples, cider, donuts and all sorts of apple goodies. When you get home, look up recipes for apple desserts, like bars, cobblers, crisps, dumplings, pies and tarts. I always like to make a big batch of homemade apple butter and apple sauce.

It’s time to hit the pumpkin patch. Go on a hayride to the field and select a few pumpkins to decorate your home and to carve jack-o-lanterns. Stop at the store and buy mini pumpkins, gourds, and the very important slice of pumpkin pie to go. Even better, pick up a whole pie to share.

It’s time for warm fall drinks like apple cider, hot chocolate (add some peppermint for extra deliciousness), and pumpkin spiced lattes. Make these drinks at home or pick them up from your local coffee shop. You can also make adult drinks, like a boozy

the maze. Award the winning team a prize.

Check your closet and look at your coats. If you need a coat, now’s the time to buy one before the cold weather arrives. Bundle up with your coat and scarf and take a walk in the crisp, cool, autumn weather. If you don’t need a new coat, you can always buy one for someone else or donate one.

There’s nothing more fun than a neighborhood block party with friends and family. Celebrate the new season with a crackling bonfire and hot dogs with all the fixings. Don’t forget dessert: hot chocolate and s’mores.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a high school, college, or professional football game, they are all fun. Wear your favorite team’s jersey and cheer them on. If you can’t attend in person, watch a game at home with all of the fun treats like subs, nachos, potato skins, wings and more.

It’s a thrill to watch the change of seasons.

Make it extra special by serving buttery popcorn, caramel corn and a selection of retro candy (or the candy you ate as a child).
