METEOROLOGIST KEVIN GREGORY TALKS 30-YEAR CAREER & EVER-CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF WEATHER TECHNOLOGY
RTV6 Meteorologist, Kevin Gregory, followed in his father's footsteps. Bob Gregory was a meteorologist for Channel 13 in the early 70s.
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Steve Brenneman
For meteorologist Bob Gregory, every Friday night was “take your child to work day” as he brought his 7-year-old son Kevin with him to Channel 13 to watch him deliver his weather reports. Kevin sat, mesmerized, as his dad referenced the national, state and Midwestern maps using “meteorology weather critters” to mark areas of sunshine, precipitation and clouds.
“They forget that back then forecasts weren’t as specific,” Kevin says. “They simply said, ‘Precipitation today,’ whereas “I point to things that don’t exist. I talk to a now we say, ‘Chance of rain, mainly camera with no one behind it. I carry on a conversation with people at home I can’t see,” between 8 and 11 a.m.’” Kevin says. “It’s definitely a different world.” The fact that technology is always changing is precisely what makes Gregory’s job And an ever-changing world at that. Now interesting. For example, the station now there are 27 monitors covering the back uses GeoBeats, an online creative network wall of the studio. Kevin uses nine of them that leverages its global network of local for weather maps. Though he was attracted to meteorology early on, he was terrified of photographers and videographers to highlight local stories. storms as a child. blank green wall.
“Since I didn’t have school the next day, I got to stay up for the late news,” Kevin says. “In elementary school, I’d ask the teacher to “Of course, that doesn’t mean I stayed awake lower the blinds when the skies darkened,” for the ride home.” Gregory recalls. In the early 70s, it was a different generation of broadcasting. “Weather maps were real,” Kevin says. “I’d watch film be developed, edited, cut and the extra film would fall to the floor.” Today, however, the staff uses chroma key, a
He now knows that most storms never produce severe weather. Of those that do, damaging winds and large hail are the main threats. Only one percent of storms ever produce a tornado. Though he’s well informed, viewers occasionally insist that forecasts were more accurate when his dad was on air. 12 / AVON MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / AvonMagazine.com
“It’s like a geography beat or a geo-spatial kind of idea,” Kevin says. “Hendricks County is my GeoBeat, so once a week I’ll share a local story on RTV6 or TheIndyChannel.com.” Viewers not only like being tuned in at the local level, but they also enjoy being able to interact with their local meteorologist. “You’d be amazed at how many people call in to report what they’re seeing,” Kevin
“THAT’S BEEN THE TRUE JOY FOR ME — ALL THE PEOPLE I’VE WORKED WITH FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS AT RTV6. I’M DOING WHAT I LOVE TO DO.”
says. “They’ll say, ‘I’m in Putnam County, and we just had 50 mph winds and hail roll through here.’” Though computer models seem to rule the day, the human element of the weather equation is still a critical component to safe forecasting. “My job is the Bermuda triangle of meteorological knowledge. I say that because I get lost in there often,” Kevin says. “Some days I can’t figure out what’s going on with the weather. Other days the computer isn’t working. And then there are times when my mind and mouth aren’t connected, and I get tongue-tied.” The most difficult days are when severe weather looms and Kevin must spend hours on-air, describing a weather event as it unfolds. “I have to multi-task—reporting to the

viewer and at the same time manipulating the radar and reading information from storm spotters,” he says. “That’s the challenge being a one-man band, running the computers while warning out ahead of the storms, yet still keeping track of the storm reports that come in.” Gregory has found a great way to connect with viewers — by incorporating his Yorkie Rory (short for Aurora, named after the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights). “If I post a straight weather graphic, it generates moderate interest, but if I post a picture of Rory, soaking wet from a downpour, people love that,” he says. As a result, Rory has developed quite the following on Gregory’s Facebook page. “I’ll put her in a sweater and caption it, ‘Rory Gregory knows that you need to layer up for the weekend,’” Kevin says. “If I simply posted, ‘Highs today will be 56 with winds out of the Southwest,’ people don’t respond the way they do if I include a picture of Rory pointing her nose into the wind as it lifts her 8-pound body off the ground. Because that creates a weather experience rather than a straightup weather report.” A typical day starts with Kevin getting to the station by 1 p.m. and updating TheIndyChannel.com. Then he has six radio forecasts — four for WIBC and two for stations in Seymour, Columbus and Southeast Indiana. Next, he starts preparing graphics for the 5, 6, 7 and 11 p.m. broadcasts.
Well, unless he interrupts “The Bachelor.” Then he hears about it. When Kevin does get a chance to mingle with his viewers, the No. 1 comment he gets is, “I didn’t know you were so tall!” (He stands 6' 5".) “Yes, I’m taller than you think, and I’ve got grey hair just like a cumulus cloud,” says Kevin, a graduate of Ben Davis High School who moved to Brownsburg in 1992 and then to Avon in 1997. He and his wife Susan own 31 acres.
Town Hall Park, Washington Township Park or McCloud Nature Park. Over the past several years, however, Kevin and Susan have traveled to watch their son Matt (now a senior) play basketball at Notre Dame Their daughter Annie is also a junior there. “We’ve been to Georgia Tech, the University of Virginia, Duke, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh,” says Kevin, who sometimes brings his dad along to games. Bob, a retiree for the past 17 years, also enjoys reading, traveling and relaxing on his pontoon boat.
Because Kevin spends a good portion of his day in front of a green screen, he enjoys when he’s able to report live like he did the year Indianapolis hosted the Super Bowl. In addition, he also broadcasts live at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway each year prior to the Indy 500 race for Breakfast at the Brickyard.
“I’m constantly clearing brush, cutting down tree limbs, and mowing the lawn,” says Kevin, who appreciates the deer, coyote, skunk, fox, hawks, heron and one lone turkey that pass through the property. “People always say that turkeys don’t live by themselves, but this guy does!” Kevin says.
Down the road when Kevin retires, he doesn’t plan to reminisce about the crazy storms from days of yore. Instead, he’s going to remember the people — like Tom Carnegie and the late Howard Caldwell, both legendary television broadcasters and journalists.
“Those are always fun events because I get to mix with people,” Kevin says. “I don’t get that immediate feedback when I’m at the studio.”
When he’s not in his yard battling leaves, blowing grass, or collecting fallen tree limbs, Kevin is often walking Rory at Avon
“That’s been the true joy for me — all the people I’ve worked with for nearly 30 years at RTV6,” he says. “I’m doing what I love to do.”

What You Need to Know About Gum Disease Writer / Dr. Steve Driggers
Prevalence
Treatment
Did you know that as much as 50 percent of the US population has periodontal (gum) disease, which affects the bone and tissues that hold in your teeth? That number jumps to 70 percent for those 65 or older.
The best way to treat gum disease is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits will go a long way toward achieving good oral and overall health.
Signs and Symptoms In many cases gum disease is painless. If you have bad breath, loose or shifting teeth, swollen or puffy gums, red or purplish gums, bleeding when brushing or flossing, you could have gum disease.
Systemic Connection Other than the obvious consequence of premature tooth loss, several research studies have suggested that periodontal disease is associated with a variety of other conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, premature and low birth weight babies, rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases.
Once periodontal disease has been diagnosed action must be taken to control it. The specific treatment is related to the severity of the disease. Early or mild disease can often be treated with “deep cleaning” or Root Planing, usually with anesthetic. More advanced cases may require surgery. A gentler and more effective surgery method is known as LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure). With LANAP there is no cutting or stitches required. LANAP is a proven technique with the FDA approving the use of the word “regeneration” when talking about the healing of bone and gum tissues. If you have any of the symptoms or signs listed above, seek advice from a dentist. If you have been told you need gum surgery, you owe it to yourself to investigate LANAP.
Causes of Gum Disease Some factors which may lead to periodontal disease are: • • • • • • • •

with Laurel Setser Avon Washington Township Public Library Director Writer / Jamie Hergott
Writer / Jamie Hergott
Where are you from? I am from Cartersburg, IN, which is southwest of Avon. Tell me about your family.
My husband Tom and I live on a small farm north of Danville. We have one daughter, Avery, who is a senior at Danville Community High School. Our grown son Dane and his family live in Putnam County.
What’s your background?
My mom always took me to the library as a kid. I was a very avid reader. I was at the Plainfield library so much that they offered me a job shelving. I went to Western State Colorado University to study history. I worked at the college library there. I went to the IU School of Library Science right after I got my undergrad. I worked there for a semester, but it was a culture shock switching from a small liberal arts college to big IU. I was barely 21, and most people
in my class were adults who had been working or kids who came directly from IU. I didn’t fit in and didn’t like it, so I left and worked for about six years in the State Fire Marshall’s office. Interestingly enough, I got that job because I had taken shorthand as a blow off class in college. Well, this job required that, so I stayed there and worked my way up. Once I got as far as I could, I really started wishing I would have stayed in library school. So, I went back to IU. One of my professors was the director here at Avon and was teaching a management class. She had an opening, so I applied. I’ve been here since July 1989 and became the director in 1993.
How did you get into the library business and why?
I love books. I also think I liked the order that the library instills on information and the way that it allows people to get to the information because it is organized. It allows us to help you get to the information. That aspect really spoke to me and has been 22 / AVON MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / AvonMagazine.com
something I always loved. As a small kid, the library we went to was not at all a good experience. There was an old shushy lady in a dark, dreary building. I don’t look back fondly on the place as a child, but it was always the books that drew me.
What is a typical day like for you at the library?
There is no typical day. Especially in administration. In any job here, you never do quite the same thing. We spend more time back here getting ready for meetings and budgets and more of the administrative things. But even out on the floor, we never get the same question twice. We see the same people a lot. But every day is different. It’s never the same old, same old.
What is your favorite part about working there?
I love the people that work here. They love the patrons. They love the people that come in. They just spend their time trying to think of things and how to do them better. I have
staff that work the front desk who know the things people like to read. They know people’s first names. They just really enjoy what they’re doing, and it’s a very convivial atmosphere here. It’s a real family. It makes it a joy to be here.
What is your favorite book and why?
Do you have any advice for your younger self?
I am a very goal-oriented person. I tend to check things off and move straight on. I would tell myself to savor the moment a little bit more. Don’t be so quick to move on to the next goal that you don’t appreciate the fact you’ve accomplished what you’ve set out to do with this goal.
That’s like asking me who’s my favorite friend. I have books I read once a year. Some books touch me at one point and then don’t touch me again when I reread them. I love them each for what they bring to the table. Just like my friends have different strengths they bring to the table, I feel that way about books. I have favorite authors and series, and I enjoy them. Some you enjoy and never think about. Others make an impression. I love them all.
What is your favorite book from when you were a child/young adult?
I was a voracious reader. One author I really enjoyed is Elizabeth Enright. She wrote three books in a series. The first book was called “The Saturdays” and the second one was “The Four Story Mistake” and then the last book was “Then There Were Five.” They were about children whose mother had died and their adventures in New York City during World War II. Their dad worked for the government. It was about siblings, which I loved because I didn’t have siblings, and it was just a life so different than mine. They pooled their allowance and each took a Saturday to do things they wanted to do. As an adult, I bought the books again on Amazon, and I was a little scared to read them because I didn’t know if they’d have the same impact. I finally reread them, and I enjoyed them every bit as much as I did as a kid.
What is your favorite thing to do to relax?
I garden. I love to cook and try new recipes. And of course, reading. Those are the big three. I have a really good lasagna recipe I make for people. I have a salad recipe a friend gave me and that’s a real popular one too. AvonMagazine.com / FEBRUARY 2018 / AVON MAGAZINE / 23
In a world of iPads, smartphones and screens everywhere, what’s something the library can offer that these things can’t?
We still offer the human interaction. Even if you never want to set foot here and only use our electronic databases and format, we still have a person that can help you if you have problem. We make appointments to help you set up your device. It’s the human touch that makes
the difference. People ask me all the time, why do we need the libraries if everyone has a computer now? The feeling of librarianship has changed. It used to be very much a shushy kind of thing, and if you ask me the right question, I will get you the answer you want. But now, it’s more, let us help you phrase your question so you get the answer you need. That’s what we bring to the table in a world where we are inundated with info. What is the best info? What resource will give you what you need? That is what we do have here.
We are Your Mortgage Loan Officers. We specialize in making more possible.
What’s coming up at the library in 2018 that you’d like us to get the word out about for you?
We are finalizing our strategic plan for the next five years. Libraries have been hit by property tax caps as much as schools and other government units, so we are seeing our income reduced but the amount of people we are serving is increasing. With our strategic plan, we are trying to figure out where we need to focus those dollars on. Then you consider we have a very diverse group of people with wide-ranging income and diversity levels, and so we are hoping to find some niche areas where we haven’t been able to reach certain groups. For example, we have a hard time reaching teens. What fabulous thing are we going to do over here to possibly get teens who are engaged in 100 other extracurricular activities to come here? In our initial round of planning, we realized there’s nothing we can do neat enough to get that group of kids. But if there’s a group of kids who are not overextended, who are dying for something that appeals to them, we can pinpoint them. But we can’t reach all of them. We are a big library serving a big population, so examining things outside the lens of “we’ve always done it that way” is a challenge. We didn’t have a good turnout for focus groups this past year. Sometimes that’s because everyone’s ok with what you’re doing. We are hoping to put together a strategic plan that we can roll out in the community in 2018. I want to do some things that are creative and have real meaning for Avon and Washington Township.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMUNITY WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP TRUSTEE DON HODSON SHARES PLANS, INSIGHTS & HOPES FOR THE FUTURE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography provided by Washington Township
Township governance has always been a form of local government because the Hoosier State is so rural. Indiana has more than a thousand townships across the state. According to Don Hodson, Washington Township Trustee, Washington Township is the largest in Hendricks County with a third of the population living within it. “In 2010, the census status had 45,000 in Washington Township. I wouldn’t be surprised if in 2020, numbers have grown to 65,000,” says Hodson, noting that this is the second-fastest growing township in the state. If you’re wondering what the difference is between the Town of Avon and Washington Township, you’re probably not alone. It can be a little confusing because though the two entities work in tandem and have some overlapping responsibilities, they are accountable for different things. For example, the Township is responsible
for the Fire Department, the Township Park Department, weed control of the unincorporated areas, abandoned cemeteries and public assistance (for those who quality and are in need of rent, shelter and medicine). Also, if there is a fence dispute between two property owners and part of that property is a farm, the Township is responsible for settling that dispute. The Township has its own park — Washington Township Park, established in the early 1990s. The lower half of the park, with the Splash Pad and Pavilion, opened in 2010. The Town of Avon also has its own park that is now connected by trail to Washington Township Park. In addition, the Town of Avon takes care of roads within the town boundaries and provide police protection within the incorporated area of the town. “All four entities [Washington Township, Town of Avon, Avon-Washington Township Public Library and the Avon Community AvonMagazine.com / FEBRUARY 2018 / AVON MAGAZINE / 27
School Corporation] work closely, and that’s key,” Hodson says. “This isn’t a tug of war. We all live in the Avon community and want what’s best for its citizens.” Hodson, a former Plainfield resident, graduated from Plainfield High School and went to Wabash College. Hodson’s wife, Rita, grew up in Avon and was an Avon High grad. The two of them settled in Avon in 1984. In 1987, they built a home that Hodson decks out every December with festive decorations. Since he strings colorful lights that cover the entire house, it resembles the house in Chevy Chase’s holiday classic “Christmas Vacation.” “My son’s friends used to call him Russ,” Hodson says (referencing character Clark Griswold’s son in the film). Rita, who passed away in 2013, was instrumental in growing the countywide organization Project Angel, which helps children at Christmastime. Their daughter, Nikki, took over that responsibility when
her mom died. Hodson’s three children (Nikki, Nathan and David) and eight grandchildren (Wil, Britan, Evie, Kenzie, Ethan, Brice, Dylan and Graham) all reside in Avon as well. Hodson, who retired from sales last June, was elected as Washington Township Trustee in January 2011. He’s currently serving his second term and is running one more time this year. “We cleaned up a financial mess during my first term, and there are still some big projects I want to get done so I decided to run once more,” says Hodson, noting that, should he get elected, during his next term he would like to eliminate the township debt. “Doing so would free up two levies that the tax payers would no longer be paying on, which would help the schools, the library, the town and the township itself.” Hodson also plans to remodel two fire stations — Station 141, located across from Avon Middle School South and Station 142 on Ronald Reagan Parkway — and create a training ground for the fire department.
Don Hodson – Township Trustee, Lora Lacey – Park Director, Kisha Bryant – Human Resources Director, Josie Simison – Township Administrator, Kelsey Hambleton – Public Assistance Director, Dan Smith – Fire Chief
In addition, construction for Pecar Park is underway, located just north of River Birch Elementary on 150 North. That park will include a nature center, a pond, several trails, a low-impact obstacle course, an outdoor classroom and a primitive campground for tents. The projected completion date is September 2018. Besides building Pecar Park, Hodson would like to add more park programs, as well as expand the camps that are currently being offered through Washington Township. The summer camp, which began nearly a decade ago, has grown in popularity as word has spread. In 2017, more than 100 campers were registered weekly. In recent years, the parks director has expanded those programs, and Washington Township Parks now offers camps during fall, winter and spring breaks as well. “Those are smaller in size since we don’t have as many college counselors available to work. As a result, they fill up quickly,” says Hodson, noting that they are looking at possibly hosting camps during snow/eLearning days so that working parents have a place to drop their children. “We’ve also hosted Boy Scouts and are looking to provide a similar program for Girl Scouts in the near future,” Hodson adds. Community members enjoy using the Washington Township Pavilion for weddings and receptions. Avon school administrators and the Avon Education 28 / AVON MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / AvonMagazine.com
Family owned & operated since
Foundation members also frequently use it for various events. “I’ve never charged the schools, the town or the library to use the Pavilion because essentially that would be like taking money out of your right back pocket to put it in your left back pocket,” Hodson says. As for future plans, Hodson and his public assistance director want to determine how best to address the homeless issue in Hendricks County. “We need to look at this issue countywide and study other townships in the state that have been successful in this realm,” says Hodson, who also would like to expand the resources in Hendricks County for senior citizens and single parents. It’s all part of working together in order to better serve the community. When Maggie Hoernemann became superintendent, Hodson suggested that
the taxing entities meet regularly for collaborative purposes to ensure that no one was duplicating services.
dedicated public servants, including firefighters, administrators, park and seasonal personnel — a group that totals more thabn 80 employees.
“I wanted us to make sure our tax dollars were getting the best bang for our buck,” Hodson says. They established the Avon Collaboration Group, which consists of Hodson, the Town council president, the Avon town manager, the superintendent of schools, the school chief financial officer and the Washington Township librarian. They also invited the state representative, state senator, county commissioners and county council members to provide input.
Hodson, one of the original committee members for putting together the Avon Community Heritage Festival, enjoys working with people to solve problems. “I love coming up with new ideas that can benefit the population,” Hodson says. In fact, he encourages community members to contact him with any new program ideas they might have. “We’re always looking for input from the community so that we can make Avon the best that it can be.”

February is American Heart Month, but more commonly, the focus is on chocolate hearts instead of the hearts inside our bodies. Your significant other might hold the key to your heart this Valentine’s Day, but take a minute to ensure your actual heart will remain healthy for many Valentine’s Days to come.
Calcium buildup in the coronary arteries is an early sign of coronary heart disease (CHD). CHD is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up in the coronary arteries. Over time, plaque can harden or rupture, leading to serious heart conditions like chronic chest pain, heart attack, heart failure and arrhythmias.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A HEART SCAN? All together — checking in, registering and getting the heart scan — the process usually takes less than 45 minutes. During the test, patients are hooked up to small electrodes and scanned using a computed tomography (CT) scanner.
How can you do that? The simplest way is by talking with your doctor about a heart scan.
WHO SHOULD GET A HEART SCAN? Heart scans are generally suggested by your physician based on factors that may put you at an increased risk for heart problems, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high body mass index, diabetes, smoking or a family history of aneurysm or heart disease.
Once the heart scan is complete, your physician or cardiologist will recommend an appropriate plan of action to help reduce any risks you may have. Most plans include a diet and exercise program.
WHAT IS A HEART SCAN? “A heart scan gives doctors a picture of the heart’s arteries,” says Ibrahim Abu Romeh, MD, cardiologist at Indiana University Health West Hospital. “A heart scan is used to detect calcium levels. The amount of calcium helps doctors determine the level of cholesterol buildup in the arteries, and that tells us if a person is at risk of having a heart attack.”
“Not everyone needs a heart scan,” Dr. Abu Romeh adds. “Generally speaking, if you are under 40 years of age, active and able to exercise without limitations, your risk for having heart disease is low.” 32 / AVON MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / AvonMagazine.com
Heart scans are typically conducted every five to 10 years on individuals ages 40+ with known risk factors. However, anyone can request to have a heart scan. To learn more, talk with your doctor, or visit iuhealth.org/ heart-scan.

I’m Stronger Because of American Senior Communities! “When I first arrived, I felt terrible and could hardly get out of bed. The staff encouraged me to work hard in therapy. Now I’m exercising three times a week and feeling great. I’m back to my five acre home where I love to garden. I still can mow and spray the orchard. ASC therapists are excellent and they’ve helped me become strong.” — Philip G., former resident
