GENERAL ELECTION DAY– MAY 21, 2022 PUBLIC NOTICE FROM ENROLLMENT Enrollment is closed between May 11, 2022 to June 10, 2022 for the general election as per Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation Tribal Code Title 7, Enrollment, Article VII, Section 2.
The Membership Roll shall close ten (10) days before the annual election of Tribal Council members in May of each year and remain closed for a period of thirty (30) days. Applications for enrollment can be accepted during this period, but shall not be formally acted upon until the thirty (30) day period has passed.
This years general election will be a hybrid of absentee and provisional voting. This is a wonderful opportunity to gather and socialize as a tribal community, while we care for the resting place of our loved ones and ancestors. A light breakfast will be available at 8:30 am outside the cemetery. The cleanup will start at 9:00am and continue to 2:00pm.

Requirement for Voting
1) You must be enrolled. Enrolled means being accepted by the Enrollment Committee, approved by an action of Tribal Council and placed on the Membership List.
2) You must be 18 years of age by the voter registration deadline. You can still register after the registration deadline but you will not be able to vote until the next election.
3) To register to vote, fill out a request for Affidavit of Registration and return it to the Voter Registrar. You only need to register once. We encourage you to return your ballots promptly but provisional ballots will be handed out on voting day.
Your signature on the official ballot is VERIFIED with your signature on file with the records department. If your signature doesn’t match, the Election Board can make the decision to void the ballot. The Voter Registration form is available at the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation Tribal Office and on the Website for new voters. In addition to providing emergency power to the food storage building, a commercial grade generator ensures Public Works’ essential services remain operational during inclement weather. Both buildings are critical to the Nation’s operations and ability to quickly monitor, assess and respond during emergency situations ensuring vital resources are available during unanticipated power outages. A quarantine order is hereby established on all species of mussels taken for human consumption by recreational sport harvesters from the ocean shore of California. The quarantine extends from the Oregon Border south of the Mexican Border including all bays, inlets and harbors.

Noe Guerrero is a Graduate student at the University of Oregon. He is pursuing his Masters degree in Teaching and Curriculum. Guerrero wants to teach Middle and High School Science for a couple years and then go into Physical Education and Anatomy. His Tolowa ancestry comes from his Great Grandmother Ethel M. Van PeltChase and his Great Grandmother Rose Lopez-John. He currently has a 4.0 GPA and began student teaching in September 2021. Noe’s words of advice are “We can’t ask for strength if we aren’t ready to be strong when we need to. Nothing comes easy, some things require more effort than others. When the time comes, be ready to give that effort.” His short term goal is to finish his education and teach in his community. His long term goal is to become a Principal for a school. Mr. Guerrero said that his parents had a huge impact on his academic journey and inspired him to get his Masters degree. He said “I owe everything to them and will forever be grateful for their sacrifices.” 9

XAA-WAN’-K’WVT (HOWONQUET) EARLY LEARNING PROGRAM (XELP) Head Start welcomed so many wonderful community visitors this past month. On March 11th,Smith River Fire did a special presentation with Sparky the Dog. They shared about fire safety and each child toured the fire truck along with spraying the water hose. Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office visited on March 18th. They shared about their jobs, strangers, and when to call 911. Each child was deputized with a sheriff sticker. On March 24th, Emily Reed and her daughter Marlee Reed presented their beautiful regalia dress with two cultural dolls. On March 28th, Recology brought their garbage trucks. Each child was able to toured inside and operate the lift, they also explained the importance of recycling in order to save our environment. Shu’ Shaa nin-la (thank you) to all of our presenters.

NUU-DA’-YE’-DVN (COMMUNITY AND FAMILY WELLNESS) “What’s In Your Medicine Bag?” Family Unity Activity The Victims Services division of Community and Family Wellness hosted the first Family Unity Activity on March 17, 2022 via Zoom. The series “What’s In Your Medicine Bag?” is a monthly activity that focuses on gathering skills for resiliency and healing through culture centered activities. These events include a family friendly book by Native American/Alaskan Native authors, a traditional craft and discussion about what we can add to our ‘Medicine Bag’ to nurture resiliency, strength, love, healing and health. Families came together over Zoom to read the book Coyote Medicine Bag by Steven Coyote and created individual leather medicine bags. We practiced introductions in Tolowa language and talked about the traditions of a medicine bag and the meaning of individual items inside.

The family kits included the book, medicine bag crafts, and items to add to the project. In appreciation for their participation, families were gifted a Medicine Wheel mug. Those who completed the survey and included photos of their projects received either a beautiful duffle bag or a Medicine Wheel throw blanket. Be sure to sign up for the next Family Unity Activity event. We are now hosting in person! They are held every 3rd Thursday of the month and are open to Native American/Alaskan Native families residing in our service area with at least one child under the age of 18 living in the household. NATIVE YOUTH IN FOOD AND AGRICULTURE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT The Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative is hosting its annual Native Youth in Food and Agriculture Leadership Summit held at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR, July 19 - 26, 2022. This year's Summit will build on previous Summits and include a NEW Policy Leadership Program. The 2022 Summit will be a skillsdevelopment-focused event that will give attendees an opportunity to do a deep dive into a particular area of food and agricultural production or policy. These four subject matter areas are: 1) 2) 3) 4)
Agricultural Business and Finance; Land Stewardship and Conservation; Agricultural Law and Policy; and Nutrition and Health.
While at the Summit, experts will lead instruction in each of these areas and participants will have the opportunity to learn skills to apply to a capstone project with a small group of peers. Following the completion of capstone projects, attendees will take part in a three-day student congress experience, which provides insight into the formation of federal agriculture policy that impacts Native farmers and ranchers by modeling a Senate or House agriculture committee. Seeking Activity Consultants!!!
Hello! My name is Ian Jones and I am one of the new California State Park Rangers in Del Norte County. After growing up in the busier cities of Southern California, I have learned to feel at home in this beautiful area. I am incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to be a steward of these rivers, forests and dunes and I look forward to building those community relationships with everyone who calls this area home. Outside of work I enjoy photography, playing guitar and hiking. If you ever see me out and about in the field feel free to stop and say hi!
Community & Family Wellness is looking for consultants who will lead workshops for families!
We are looking to contract with individuals who are skilled in the following: * dress making (doll size) * men’s regalia * basket making * women’s gambling (shell dice) * bark skirt making * men's gambling * bear grass braiding * necklace making * preparing traditional foods * harvesting traditional foods * gardening * basic home making skills (cleaning, etc.) * sewing * cooking
Consultants will be contracted at a rate of $55 per hour! We are open to suggestions for other workshops! If interested, complete the workshop application at: www.surveymonkey.com/r/CFWconsultants We can also provide hard copies of applications to those who do not have access to the internet.

Hello and thank you for the warm welcome. My name is Simone Sequoia DuRand. I grew up in Davis, but have visited Humboldt and Del Norte county many times over the years. I am particularly fond of the redwoods, but have truly been inspired by the vast wilderness that is Tolowa Dunes State Park. As a new park ranger to this area, my hope is to work within the community and create lasting change that helps to preserve and protect the natural and cultural gems of the North Coast Redwoods District. I am here to help with projects and issues big and small, so please share feedback when you see me out in the field and bring up any questions or concerns you may have. I may have been hired to patrol this area, but it is each and every one of you that knows this land and understands what can be improved. I may have a lot to learn, but I am always willing to listen. Let's grow together.
