CACTUS Programme Ends

The first Toko CACTUS has now wrapped up for 2024! The last three weeks have involved lifting tractor tyres, a run to the Milton Coronation Hall to the Dojo Training Studio. Also a trip to Balclutha for a game of ‘Capture the Flag’ with the South Otago High School CACTUS team and also an early morning swim at the Milton Pool. We have had some more very interesting and successful guest speakers including ex Tokomairiro student Heidi Renata who has a business called INNOV8HQ where she mentors rangitahi to follow their dreams. Also we have had local Carl Schiller bring in his amazing modified bicycle and gear like his -40 degree sleeping bag, that he will take to Alaska next year to ride in a race across the snow, and Katie Moodie from Sport Otago came along and spoke about how her experiences in life has shaped her career path. Last Saturday we had our ‘Longest Day’ which is the Graduation Day for the CACTUS Team! The team were dropped off at Lake Road and walked/jogged down the bike track to the Waihola Lakefront. From there they kayaked around the Lake and then the team had the challenge of lifting up a car, which was a goal set in the first week of the programme. The body of the car was lifted but not quite the tyres! They put in the greatest effort and worked as a team and that’s what the programme is all about! We ended the morning with a lunch and presentation of awards. Many thanks to the parents that helped with breakfasts and for getting the rangitahi places they needed to be. Many thanks also goes to Kelvin McSkimming who has dedicated his three mornings a week as the CACTUS Trainer and has given these students confidence, physical skills and mental strength.
