Toko CACTUS 2024

Toko CACTUS (Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit Support) has started off strong! We are now halfway through the programme and Kelvin McSkimming, our Trainer, has had the 18 students focusing on teamwork, self-control, new connections and trust within the group. He has also been working on mental strength and agility with the team. At the end of week one, Keely Hill from Sport Otago and also plays for Otago Spirit came to speak to the group about the importance of balancing our well-being, drawing on the Te Whare Tapa Whā model, which encompasses mental, spiritual, physical, social and land connections. She also emphasized the significance of fuelling our bodies with nutritious food to maintain energy throughout the day. In the second week we had Amanda Slade join us. She is the Personal Development Manager for the Otago Rugby Football Union and asked the students to think about what defines them as a person; such as identifying things that filled their cup and what things that didn’t. If we fill our cup with things that make us feel good, it will make us feel better, perform better and keep up with our commitments. Last Friday we had Chase Haley visit. Chase holds multiple boxing and kickboxing titles and shared his inspirational journey, which has now led to teaching at Ōtepoti Boxing Club. He talked about how life’s challenges reshaped his path and resulted in becoming a better person which motivated him to help everyone that came through his doors through fitness, building community and improving health and wellbeing. We are now in the fourth week of CACTUS which has seen us learning some self-defence techniques and practical ways to protect ourselves in unsafe situations. Still many sessions to come for building up confidence and working together as a team. We look forward to hearing what happens next! Tokomairiro High School
