Ruth Goodman: Finding joy in the past

The beloved historian and Victorian Farm presenter talks cold winters, clever women, and why washing up changed her life

For many of Together TV’s viewers, Ruth Goodman feels like an old friend. Whether she’s milking cows in Victorian Farm, cooking over a wood fire or scrubbing linen with ash on Edwardian Farm, Ruth’s cheerful curiosity has made history feel alive.

As Victorian Farm Christmas returns to Together TV this December, Ruth reflects on the series that turned a lifelong passion into a national favourite. “It’s a privilege,” she says warmly. “To be invited into people’s homes and share something you love – that’s special. I’ve always seen history as the story of us, of how we came to be who we are.”

Her fascination with “real life” history began with an everyday mystery: washing up. “Nobody could tell me how people in the past did it,” she laughs. “It’s such a basic, human thing – how did they manage? That’s where it started.” That curiosity became a calling. For nearly 20 years, Ruth worked in schools, museums and theatres researching domestic history. Eventually, a TV producer asked if she’d like to live and work on a historical farm. “My first reaction was ‘Certainly not!’” she admits. “I had a teenage daughter and a small business. But somehow the timing was right – and here we are.”

LIFE ON THE FARM

From the Tudors to the Victorians, Ruth has endured long winters, sore hands and endless washing without complaint. The hardest part? “The cold,” she says instantly. “Britain isn’t warm. I can’t tell you how wonderful hot water is. Just being able to run a tap – it’s bliss!”

Yet amid the discomfort came joy. “The crews were always brilliant – broad-minded, hardworking, funny. People don’t realise how collaborative TV is. You become a little family.” Her favourite memory? Filming about steam power. “I used to work for British Rail, so it was heaven,” Ruth recalls. “We spent the day driving steam engines up a hill with sixty tonnes of coal. At one point the sparks set fire to the bank, and we ran down putting out fires. I’d never had so much fun!” Not every moment was so jolly. Filming a Tudor eel-fishing scene remains a haunting memory. “The eels wriggled out of the pot and came towards me in the boat. I nearly jumped overboard. I can handle mud, I can handle cold – but not those long wriggly things!”

Mincemeat

• 1 lemon, boiled for 1 hour until soft, left to cool

• 100g raisins

• 100g sultanas

• 1/2 Bramley apple or similar large cooking apple, peeled and chopped

• 100g dried mixed fruit

• 75g mixed peel

• 100g suet

• 100g dark brown muscavado sugar

• 100g currants

• 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

• 1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg

STEPS

• 1 tsp mixed spice

• 1/2 tsp ground ginger

• 50ml brandy

• 50ml sherry

RUNNING WASHING WITH NO SOAP? JUST A LESSON FROM THE PAST

• 450g plain flour

• 1 tsp baking powder

• 120g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing

• 1 tbsp caster sugar

• 140ml orange juice

• 2 oranges, zest only

• 1 free-range egg, beaten

• Whipped cream, brandy butter or ice cream, to serve

Start by boiling and blending the lemon, fruits, and peel. Mix in suet, sugar, spices, and alcohol, then let it sit overnight. For the orange pastry, blend flour, butter, and orange zest, then add juice to form a dough. Chill, roll out, and cut circles for the base and top of your pies. Fill each base, seal with the top, brush with egg, and bake until golden. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream, brandy butter, or ice cream.

Centuries of living history have changed how Ruth lives today. “I stopped using detergents nearly 30 years ago,” she reveals. “Early laundry didn’t use soap – it used water, agitation and wood ash. I realised most of what we buy isn’t needed. I use nothing in my washing machine – everything still comes out clean, and it’s cheaper and better for the planet.”

Her experiments with historical living have also shaped her philosophy. “People in the past had practical skills – they could make things, mend things, feed themselves. That selfreliance gives confidence. Digital skills are great, but when your roof blows off, it’s knowing how to keep warm that matters.”

A SIMPLE CHRISTMAS

While her TV Christmases have been full of bustle, her real ones are quieter. “My family’s quite scattered, so it’s usually simple,” she says. “I have to confess I’ve done so much Christmas on television, I’m a little jaded! But I do love the eating and being together – that’s been true for every century.” And her festive favourite? “Oldstyle mince pies,” she grins. “They used to have meat in them – spiced and savoury. Much nicer than the sugary ones we make now!”

As Together TV viewers settle in for another festive season with Victorian Farm Christmas, Ruth has one final thought: “We’re all part of a huge human community – past, present and future. Everything changes, always. So find something that sparks your curiosity, go to your local library, and explore. That’s how you start your own adventure.”

Rooted in winter

Alan Titchmarsh on winter gardens and why a little mud adds to the magic

If there’s anyone who knows how to bring beauty and calm into our homes, it’s Alan Titchmarsh. Through Love Your Garden and Love Your Home and Garden on Together TV, he’s shown how a simple patch of green can become a place of healing and joy. We sat down with Alan to reflect on the moments that have meant the most to him. “I just hope the programmes touch people’s hearts, but also that they connect. We prove in every episode what a difference a garden can make to someone’s life. It opens up their world, quite literally.”

Alan remembers one transformation that has stayed with him for years. “I’ll never forget a former serving soldier who’d lost both his legs to an explosive device. He could only find peace sitting in his car until we made his garden accessible. When he saw it, this big, burly soldier was in pieces. That showed what a real difference a garden can make.” Moments like that, Alan explains, reveal the power of gardening: to heal, to restore, and to give people back a part of their lives.“Gardens and open spaces make a difference to all our lives in terms of our mental and spiritual well-being, they’re enormously valuable. We underestimate that to our cost.”

A HOME THAT FLOWS

THE JOY OF JUST BEING

Winter, for Alan, is a time to slow down and simply “be in it”. He laughs, “I’m not particularly good at this, as opposed to doing something.” But he believes it’s worth trying - just to stop and notice.

Gardening, he says, has always been at the core of what brings people together. “It’s a great leveller. It cuts through all barriers of class and age. Gardeners are sharers — they love to share their pleasure and their enjoyment. We’re all working under the same weather, the same seasons, and that unites us.”

For Alan, harmony shouldn’t stop at the garden gate. His time on Love Your Home and Garden proved that your indoor space is just as valuable as your outdoor one.

“Your eye for design doesn’t stop at the front door - in either direction. I’m very particular about interiors as well as gardens. The two should complement each other… they’re indivisible.”

After the pandemic, many of us learned that home should flow inside and out. Alan believes even those without gardens can bring nature in.

“Having living plants in your home is proven to be good for your health and wellbeing. The key is to find plants that suit your conditions. Whether that’s a shady corner or a sunny windowsill…let them thrive.”

Houseplants, window boxes, or balcony pots -they all count. “Go out and find what works for your space,” he adds. “You’ll be surprised how much life they bring.”

As the weather turns colder, Alan’s enthusiasm grows. “This is prime bulbplanting time. Daffodils, tulips, or crocusesyou’ve only got to put them in a pot and they’ll come up and delight you through spring.”

In his own garden, topiary takes centre stage. “I have a lot of topiary, clipped into cones, pyramids and spheres. They give your garden form even in winter.”

And for beginners? Alan promises gardening doesn’t need to be complicated. “Plants want to grow, it’s up to us not to get in the way. Give them enough light, air and water and they’ll thrive.”

As Christmas approaches, Alan has a message for viewers: “Learn to be at one with your garden. All the news we hear every day can be depressing, but your garden is just as real; and so much more positive. If you leave your bit of Earth better than you found it, you’ve paid rent for your time.”

So this winter take his cue: plant a bulb, open a window, or simply pause to look outside. You might just find that a little touch of nature brings harmony to your home too.

We catch up with Stefan Pollak, to talk about his debut doc ALT Jay and twin brothers Jay and Matt at the heartof its story

From Essex with love

In Tilbury, Essex, twin brothers Jay and Matt Southern are proving that strength isn’t just physical. Their humour and grit have inspired a whole community.

Where did the idea for ALT Jay come from? It all came about with Together TV’s Diverse Film Fund, focussing on deaf or disabled people involved in sport. This is how I found the ALT Movement gym in Tilbury in Essex and spoke with Craig who runs it. He introduced me to a few of his gym-goers and said Jay Southern would be would be perfect for what I was looking for.

Why Jay? Craig told me that Jay is Deaf and has Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy – and that he was a trainer at ALT Movement. Then at the very end, he said, oh yeah, by the way, he’s got an identical twin brother Matt. So I spoke with them over Zoom and saw their rapport and the sort of banter they had. I straightaway thought they were the ones to focus on

How did the filming go? Did you feel supported? The support from the Together TV team was extremely helpful. Everything was provided – workshops, webinars, learning about production – and having a mentor from Whisper Films was really helpful. The crew were exceptional. I was very lucky and that the film turned out as well as it has is massively down to them.

Your film has some great moments with the boys. How did you make them feel comfortable in front of the camera? I had loads of calls with Jay and Matt, and spoke with their mum. I then visited Tilbury to get to know them and what they’re into. As well as their dog, who was all over me at the time, licking my face off. But I know that they wanted to open up and talk about their story. I really just wanted to show Jay’s story, his connection with his brother, their bond, their relationship and what they’ve got going on at ALT Movement.

Its a really heartwarming film. How important was this? From the outset I wanted to show Jay’s story in a positive light. The main

thing was for it to be natural and observe Jay’s day-to-day life at home and the gym. In the film Craig says just because you’ve got a disability doesn’t mean you’re more inspirational than other people. I think that’s the essence, showing disability as unsensational.

How has it been sharing it with the world through TV and film festivals? We got a slot on Channel 4 during the final day of the Paralympics and it was amazing. Showing it at the BFI London Film Festival as part of the Diverse Film Fund screening and on Together TV has been great. It’s been in other festivals and I was shortlisted for the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards.

I want the story to resonate with people - the story of community, of family, of brothers.

Tell me about the Sony Awards. Is it true that ALT Jay was one of just 30 films from over 11,500 entries? That was definitely a highlight. Sony flew us to LA for a week and I met Sony delegates from around the world. But the main thing that I loved were the connections I built with all the other filmmakers.

Has ALT Jay been well-received by viewers? Yes, Jay and Matt’s story really resonates with people. I’ve received messages from parents of disabled children. Teachers tell me they want to

show it to their students. Matt and Jay have shown it at schools in Tilbury and want to show it across Essex. The gym also had loads of new members signing up. Ultimately, I really wanted ALT Movement to gain exposure so people know they have a community that they can join and belong to.

What would you like ALT Jay’s impact and legacy to be? I want the story to resonate with people. The story of community, of family, of brothers. I want it to show what people with disabilities can achieve - whether you’re deaf, physically disabled or neurodivergent - and how it shouldn’t impact people, whether that’s in society, in sport, in school or in gyms.

If you’ve ever felt invisible, Lou Featherstone knows exactly how that feels. Once a quiet mum from Brighton, she’s now the vibrant, joyspreading woman behind Lu in LuLand - a growing movement encouraging people to fall in love with themselves again. Lou calls herself a midlife confidence coach, but she’s far more than that. She’s a cheerleader for everyone who’s ever looked in the mirror and thought, “Where did the real me go?” “We spend half our lives trying to fit in — but the real magic happens when we stand out.”

FINDING HERSELF AGAIN

After a long career in social care and advertising, Lou hit her forties and realised something was missing. “I’d spent years making sure everyone else was happy — my family, my job, my friendsand forgot about me,” she says. “One day, I just thought, hang on, what happened to the fun?” So, she decided to do something radical: put herself back in the picture. She started sharing her thoughts online - at first nervously, then with growing confidence - and soon discovered she wasn’t alone. Thousands began tuning in, drawn to her mix of honesty, humour and the kind of wild, colourful outfits that make every day feel like a celebration.

THE ROAD TO SELF-LOVE

When the pandemic hit, Lou was living in the US. Instead of retreating, she dreamed up the Self-Love Revolution - a cross-country road trip to meet other women rediscovering themselves.

She bought an old American school bus, painted it pink, called it Susie, and hit the road. “I wanted to show that life doesn’t stop at 40, 50 or 60,” she says. “You can start again any time.”

Along the way, she met women from all walks of life - single mums, retirees, smalltown dreamers - all united by the same longing to feel visible again. Her message was simple: wear the clothes you love, speak your truth and don’t wait for permission to enjoy life.

BRINGING THE REVOLUTION HOME

Now back in the UK, Lou is taking her Self-Love Tour nationwide, helping others reconnect with joy and confidence. Her infectious warmth has made her a perfect

partner for Together TV’s Silver Sex Guide , where her fearless approach to body confidence struck a chord with viewers over 55. “It’s about reclaiming the parts of yourself you thought were gone - and realising you were never broken in the first place,” she says.“Confidence isn’t something you have all the time - it’s something you practise.”

Despite the sequins and sparkle, Lou admits she still has wobbles. “I have my down days too,” she laughs. “But every time I show up as myself, it reminds someone else they can too.”

For many of us, Christmas can be both the happiest and the hardest time of year. Between family gatherings, long shopping lists and the pressure to be perpetually cheerful, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But for TV presenter and Wonder Women founder Ria Hebden, who brightens up mornings on Lorraine and recently attended The Women of the Year Awards, the key to staying grounded is simple — slowing down and savouring life’s small pleasures.“Working in television is hugely exciting but fast paced,” Ria says. “You give a lot of yourself, so building in self-care is essential.” Her version of self-care isn’t about luxury but balance: massages and reflexology to release tension, herbal teas to unwind, and moments of stillness to reset. “It sounds glamorous,” she laughs, “but it’s really about listening to your body and protecting your energy.”

That approach helped her pull off one of her proudest achievements this year — producing the Wonder Women conference at the BFI Southbank, celebrating 300 inspiring women in media, including Together TV’s own Chair, Lisa Opie. “It took ten months of planning,” she says, “but it was worth every second. I love shining a light on brilliant women who make a difference.”

EARLY FESTIVE WARMTH

At home, Christmas in the Hebden household starts early — by the end of November, the tree is already up. “The kids pick one new decoration each year,” Ria says, smiling. “It’s our tradition. We don’t buy a whole new set, just one special bauble that means something.” Over time, each ornament has become a memory — from her son’s first Christmas to the tiny ice skates she was gifted during her time on Dancing on Ice. “We put the tree up together with Michael Bublé playing and a glass of fizz in hand. It’s about warmth and togetherness.”

Ria is the first to admit that the festive season can be tiring. “You can get Christmas fatigue,” she says. “If you’re hosting or seeing people every day, it’s easy to feel exhausted.” Her way to reset is simple: fresh air. “We take our dog, Ruby for long walks. It clears your head and breaks that cabin fever.”

A long winter stroll is the quickest way to clear your mind and lift your mood.

She also believes in creating breathing space — literally. “If things feel tense, go for a short walk or take fifteen minutes of quiet time,” she says. “Meditation helps me to relax and stay calm. I use an app called Insight Timer every day — it’s transformed my quality of sleep and changed how I react to stress.”

For those who struggle with loneliness at this time of year, Ria’s advice is beautifully simple. “Write to someone,” she says. “I’ve started sending handwritten cards to friends I’ve lost touch with. It’s amazing how a small gesture can reconnect you. You never forget how lovely it feels to receive a handwritten card.”

Her wellbeing routine doesn’t stop there. “Candles make a big difference to the atmosphere at home,” she adds. “I love those Christmassy cinnamon scents. And a spritz of lavender pillow spray helps us all to sleep better.” Her winter tip for readers? Try ginger and lemon tea — or even better, a spoonful of Korean ginger and lemon marmalade in hot water. “It’s amazing for keeping colds away!”

CELEBRATING YOURSELF

As the founder of Wonder Women, Ria is passionate about helping women rediscover their confidence. “So many people forget to celebrate what they’ve achieved,” she says. Her advice: “Once a month, make time to write down one thing that you’re proud of - big or small. At the end of the year, you’ll have twelve reminders of how capable you are. It’s the best self-esteem booster.”

Before we end, she leaves a message for Together TV readers: “Be kind to yourself this Christmas. Enjoy the day but remember — it’s just one day. If things don’t go perfectly, tomorrow is a new start. Everything has a way of working out.”

VICTORIAN SPICED APPLE CAKE

A Victorian-Inspired Spiced Apple Cake full of festive warmth RECIPE

If you love the nostalgic charm of Victorian Farm and fancy baking something that brings history to life, this spiced apple cake is the perfect winter treat. Inspired by traditional Victorian plum cakes but made with seasonal apples instead, it’s moist, fragrant, and wonderfully comforting. Best of all, this version is gluten and dairy free - ideal if you’re baking for family or friends with tricky dietary requirements. Of course, you can easily swap in regular butter and self-raising flour if you prefer.

INGREDIENTS

• 200g gluten-free self-raising flour

• 200g dairy-free butter

• 200g light brown sugar

• Zest of 1 lemon

• 2 tsp ground cinnamon

• 3 medium eggs

STEPS

• 4 apples (2 grated into the mix, 2 sliced for the top)

• 100g sultanas

• 1/4 tsp xanthan gum

• Icing sugar, to dust (optional)

Preheat the oven to 180°C and grease and line a 23cm (9-inch) loose-bottomed round cake tin. Whisk together the dairy-free butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and lemon zest until creamy and light.

Add the eggs, one at a time, whisking well after each addition.

Fold in the flour and xanthan gum until fully combined. Peel and grate two apples, then fold them into the mixture along with the sultanas.

Pour the batter into the prepared tin and smooth the top.

Peel and slice the remaining two apples, arranging them neatly on top of the cake.

Bake for about 1 hour 15 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.

(Tip: Cover the cake loosely with foil for the last 15 minutes if the top is browning too quickly.)

Cool in the tin, then remove and dust with icing sugar before serving.

Serve and enjoy warm with dairy-free custard, or simply on its own with a cup of tea. It keeps beautifully for several days - if it lasts that long!

Shoulder to shoulder

Creating purpose for men who need community and creativity

When Mike Jenn retired in 2011, he wasn’t ready to slow down. “I needed purpose and activity to keep me motivated,” he says. Like many men leaving full-time work, Mike suddenly faced the quiet realisation that his days needed to be filled with activity. The drive that he once had to go into the workforce, spend time with his colleagues had suddenly disappeared. Then his son mentioned something called the Australian Men’s Shed movement, a network of community workshops where men could come together to build, repair and spend time side by side. The idea struck an immediate chord.

Fourteen years later, the UK Men’s Shed Association (UKMSA) was born and what was a mere idea turned into thousands of Men’s Sheds across the UK - approximately 1100. The organisation consists of everyone (mostly older men and increasingly women) to come together and build, repair and most importantly, connect. “There was a gap in the market, we needed clubs run by the guys themselves, places where you could make and mend, decide what you want to do” Mike says.

By 2014, the UK Men’s Sheds Association had taken shape, helping people across the country set up their own Sheds with the spirit of community, creativity and hands on purpose. What started as a handful of volunteers in a Camden workshop soon inspired others to open their doors.

DIY SAVES LIVES

Over the years, the projects have become as creative as the people behind them. One group built a brightly painted wooden castle to be used as an archery target for disabled children made from eight panels that could fold neatly into a car boot. Another produced a detailed 1:12 scale Victorian house complete with staircases and dado rails for a local school. Others have crafted planters for health centres, bird boxes for parks, and even memorial benches for their communities. Whether large or small, each project represents more than craftsmanship; it’s a reminder of what can happen when people work together with care and pride.

If you were to step into a Men’s Shed, “You wouldn’t have known who was in charge,” Mike laughs. “We’re just a group. Everyone helps each other. When something goes wrong, we have a laugh about it and share

ideas.” His motto is “men don’t talk face to face, they talk shoulder to shoulder.” and as he thinks about that he explains that “if you put six blokes in a room and told them to talk for an hour, half would leave but if you brought in a lawnmower that needed fixing, they’d all be around it chatting…”.

Over the years, one member’s experience stays with Mike. Mick, who has become one of UKMSA’s key people, was a former carpenter who’d worked tirelessly but dealt with drinking. Due to some troubles, he became sick and was told he wouldn’t live long. After being offered a place at a day centre, he turned that down and instead found the shed. “It was amazing for him”. Mick’s been part of the Men’s Shed for 11 years, “He’s fought two bouts of cancer, and I’m pretty sure his leading

The heartbeat of Men’s Shed continues throughout the year, even at Christmas. While some Sheds work on wooden reindeer and Father Christmases for local fairs others just use the time to spend time together. Mike recalls Camden Town Shed. “When the centre closes, we still meet in a pub or someone’s home. The social side carries on even when the tools are down.”

For newcomers who think ‘I’m not handy enough, Mike wants to give gentle reassurance. “Sheds are friendly, easygoing places. People start doing very basic things and get shown what they need when they want to learn. You just have to come along and see.”

His advice this festive season is for anyone who might be feeling alone or stuck. “You must get out of the house, look approachable and talk with people” He recalls a recent experience where he simply steps outside looking positive, open eyed, with a smile on his face.

If you’re not online, ask around, “GPs, Age UK, local charities. Many doctors now refer people to Sheds because they know people need more activity and fewer pills. We also get referrals from mental health services, homelessness and addiction agencies, once people are clean.”

For Mike, the magic of community can be found in spaces like Men’s Shed - a place where doing, making and connection doesn’t need to be complicated. This Christmas, his message is clear: step outside, find your people and start building something, whether it’s a bird box, a friendship or a fresh start.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Scissors (cut along the dotted line)

Optional: Stickers for decoration

STEP 1

Take your square piece of paper and fold once diagonally and again on the other side. Make sure that you fold each side well.

STEP 2

This is the point to create a square

base to create the Christmas tree. Take each corner of the paper and bring the corners together.

STEP 3

When bringing the corners together, you will see two points form. Simply fold them to make the square base.

STEP 4

Turn the square base into a diamond shape and fold the right corner of the outer

flap to the centre of the square base. Crease it and then unfold.

STEP 5

Once unfolded, separate this with your fingers and squash the fold to create a triangle.

STEP 6

Repeat steps 4 and 5 all around the square base until you have creases all over.

STEP 7

You should be left with a triangular base. You can fold it outwards to create a flap or just cut it. This is up to your personal preference.

FINAL STEP Flare it open and ta-da! You have your origami Christmas tree - you can decorate this with stickers or add mini origami stars to the top with some glue.

KIND WORDS FROM OUR VIEWERS

What makes it all worthwhile is when we hear from viewers such as Maxine from Yorkshire who took part in our Sunflower Challenge following some very down days. She wrote “You cheered me up - just giving someone a packet of seeds can make a huge difference: A Flower Smile.” Soon her sunflowers filled her garden and life with colour. She began sharing seeds with her neighbours, helping others find the same joy she rediscovered.

Another viewer Linda told us, “You are my go-to channel - I can escape the daily grind when I switch it on.” Mal told us “Together TV offers such great alternative TV that other

channels do not provide!” Another viewer wrote to us saying “Early this morning, I watched one of the most heart-warming and inspirational life stories that I have ever seen, in my 80 years of life.” And finally Paul said “Together TV has been pivotal in my life. I took part of your Sunflower Challenge which introduced me to community gardening. I was unemployed and my new routine gave me the confidence to look for work. I now have a job and give presentations on how Together TV was the conduit for my success.”

Maxine, Linda, Mal and Paul remind us why we do this. The power that television has to encourage people to make a change for the better.
