Game On Expo is a gaming convention that will be held on August 11th-13th, 2023, at the Phoenix Convention Center in Scottsdale Arizona starting from 11am to 7pm. The event will feature arcade games, video games, tabletop games, and cosplay contests. There will also be tournaments for various games, including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Pokemon. There will also be a cosplay contest with prizes for the best costumes. The Scottsdale Summer Concert Series is a free event that takes place every Sunday evening from July 15th to August 26th at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in Scottsdale, Arizona. The series features a variety of local bands playing a variety of genres, including rock, pop, blues, and country. The concerts start at 7PM and run until 9PM. There is no need for tickets or RSVPs. Just bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the music! In addition to the music, there are also food trucks and vendors on site, so you can enjoy a meal or snack while you listen to the bands. a Ukrainian owned dance studio in North Scottsdale. Many of the dancers came directly here from the Ukraine but also Russia. They were dance partners, friends and often even couples. Many of them spoke very broken English at best. The young dancers, most between the age of 5 and 18, but adults as well, were astonishingly good dancers. In fact, many of them are world class champions and here on a special champion’s visa. Our family and children immediately loved the community. They welcomed us with open arms. They were sweet, kind, accommodating, unbelievably athletic and generous with their time. They greeted us with friendship and made us feel immediately comfortable. This was January,

2022, three months before the war broke out. We would go to the studio for the lessons but also to escape into a world of beautiful dance and music. One couldn’t get a more beautiful escape

or entertainment anywhere. It’s like we were able to watch rehearsals at the New York Ballet every time our children would participate in their dance class.

While there seems to be a wide range of opinions as to why the war happened, one thing everyone can agree on was the tremendous human disaster this was about to cause and is still causing 16 months later. The human loss and devastation to the way of life created an unforgivable and tragic condition for the Ukrainian people.

So, when our family witnessed the devastation going on in the Ukraine, we paid very close attention to how our new friends were doing. Behind their love of dance, the incredible joy they have for life, their world class moves and perfect artistic expression of music, you can see a hidden sadness. Sensing all was not okay, despite the smiles we always got when entering the studio, we spoke up and told our dance teacher (a 19-year-old world class dancer from the Ukraine – that if they ever need help. We could house a family quite easily in our nearly 4700 sq. ft. home.) Sure enough, a few months later we got the call.

We took in a single mother, two older boys (one of them a dancer) and a fouryear- old girl for three months. Lisa helped the mom get a job and child care – as the Jewish community was very generous as well to this wonderful family. We helped the kids get into school. And we provided housing.

Our kids often would play with their kids and once again, like members of the dance studio, they became family to us. While they spoke broken English, they were fluent in Russian and their own Ukrainian language. My children became self-motivated and immediately started googling Russian. Before long, my kids could speak partial Russian and the Ukrainian family’s English improved. After quite a great experience for us, the family, now self-sufficient several months later, were ready to move out. The dance owners, Nataliia and Roman, called us to the dance studio on a Wednesday night. They gave us an award for taking in and helping their beautiful people.

As a family, we were very touched by the recognition. However, the personal award of helping a family in need, was already overwhelming and self-satisfying. The recognition, while important to us, was just the frosting on the cake. The real heroes in this story are the people of the studio. Nataliia and Roman who brought over dozens and dozens of world class dancers on champion visas. These are children and young adults who are now able to escape the war. Sometimes followed by family, but always given a new chance for freedom and a way out of the devastation back home. And how much better can this be for

the children than to enter the world of dance — really a perfect escape from the horrible events back home. While you have Oscar Schindler who helped the Jews escape the Nazis, in some respect, the owners of the studio are helping dozens of dance families survive and thrive in our very own Scottsdale.

I am proud to be able to help and consider this community, after 16 months of getting to know them (and countless dance competitions and lessons) to call them family. While I can’t share their many stories in this short article, and will possibly write about my experiences someday, for now all I can tell you is my life has become richer because of them.

A SERIOUS MISDIAGNOSIS CORRECTED AT PHOENIX CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Ashley, a 12-year-old girl, developed a sinus infection while on vacation. The infection worsened, and she began to experience flulike symptoms, weight loss, and high fever. She also became emotionally aggressive and started repeating things. Ashley’s face turned pale, and her eyelids became very dark.

On July 5th, Ashley woke up disoriented and had no memory of coming home. She tried to get out of bed to find her mom, but she was too weak to walk. Paralysis had begun to set in on the left side of her body. Her family rushed her to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with viral encephalitis. This is a rare and serious illness that can cause swelling in the brain. Ashley’s doctors were surprised that she was still alive, as the virus had already caused significant damage to her brain.

PHOENIX MARKET UPDATE

FOR BUYERS

The housing market in Phoenix is changing. The supply of homes is expected to be below 2022 levels in a week, due to a slowdown in demand caused by rising mortgage rates. This has created an advantage for FHA buyers, who had been mostly rejected by sellers over the past two years. Sellers are still contributing to closing costs and buying down mortgage rates. New down payment assistance programs and loans with just 1% down are also available. Many buyers who have previously owned a home qualify as first-time home buyers.

As you can see from the image, active listings for sale is up by 3.7%, from 11,459 to 11,899. The listings under contract is down by 10.9%, previously 9,925 to 8,950. In addition, the montly sales price dropped by 7.4%, from $472,000 to $440,000.

Despite the increase in mortgage rates and the subsequent drop in demand, home prices in Greater Phoenix are still rising. The median sales price has recovered by 5% since December, up $22,000. Nearly every city in Greater Phoenix is now a seller’s market, with the only exception being Casa Grande. The improving market conditions for sellers have only slightly relieved the need for them to contribute to closing costs and rate buydowns for buyers. However, it is important to remember that Greater Phoenix would not be in an appreciating market if sellers were not willing and able to offset the costs associated with closing on a home.
