fter experiencing months of snow, rain, and cloudy days, it’s easy to slip into a lifestyle rut that only involves sleeping, eating, and working. Your energy levels lessen and the likelihood for

procrastination is stronger. With warmer and sunnier days, now is the time for you to bring some variety into your life. Here are seven ways you can reinvigorate your spirit:

1. Clear out your clutter. I’ve discovered that when I throw out junk, my ability to concentrate and focus improves. Also, I don’t need to wade through a pile of stuff to find the one thing I need. If you are having the same problem, consider having a yard sale or take your items to a consignment shop. You can find out more details on how to do this when you read our “Sell It” feature on page 24. 2. Attend our Cook Smarter event on April 19, 3-5p.m. at Wesley Manor Retirement Community. Chef Mary Wheatley, owner of Cook with Mary, and Today’s Transitions will be showing caregivers how they can make several nutritious meals from one type of food. You’ll also be able to sample some of her dishes. See page 2 to reserve a spot by April 17.

ome people think of retirement as a time to stop. Others see it as an opportunity to start something new. Learning skills or applying them in a new way challenges the brain to produce new connections that help our brains store and retrieve information more easily. The way you choose to do this depends on your interests. Meet four retirees who are making the most of their lives.

Exercise your mind

Political reporter and analyst from Wave3 TV, Dave Nakdimen, 77, retired after almost 43 years with the station. Shortly before his retirement, his daughter talked him into auditioning for a part in the Mummers & Minstrels theater production of The Music Man. He garnered a small part and despite his many years in front of the camera, he said, “The first time I went on stage it scared the hell out of me.” Now, he feels comfortable on stage and has been in six productions over the past six years. Dave is now appearing in the musical, Annie at the Anchorage School from March 18-27. Dave said, “There’s no question that memorizing lines keeps you using your brain rather than sitting on the sofa and being a spud.” But he admits that it takes him a little longer to memorize than it takes the younger cast members. “I start out the first day of rehearsal trying to memorize lines. I practice lines out loud while walking my dog — and I think he’s sick of listening. I do it while driving my car, and I guess some people think I’m nuts when they look over and see some guy talking to himself. I’m saying the lines over and over to the point that it’s automatic.” Dave stays current with the news and politics, enjoys audio and video continued on page 10 8

gadgets, and uses the internet. He also has a Facebook page. He said, “I’m a firm believer that the older you get, the more you need to socialize. And musical theater helps me more than anything because it challenges you in a lot of ways.”

Stay physical

About six years ago, shortly after JoAnn Clark, 70, retired as vice president of retail operations for the Travel Authority, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “After I got over feeling sorry for myself, I decided to do a little research and see what I could do to help myself, and one thing was water aerobics.” Her symptoms included a slow shuffling walk and poor balance. JoAnn started taking water aerobics classes at the YMCA of Southern Indiana, Clark County branch. She said, “At first, I was pretty pitiful. After a while I got pretty good at it and my health improved dramatically… I call it the magic water.” Now, JoAnn is the instructor and says she wouldn’t give it up for anything. The men and women in her classes range from 55 to 80. “People tell me it’s given them a reason to get up in the morning. They wouldn’t miss it for anything and they feel better.

“One lady just came back from vacation and said, ‘I sang your praises when I got on the airplane because now I can put my carry-on in the overhead.’ It gave her upper body strength. We do squats so we can get up out of chairs. We carry on and laugh a lot. It’s a good time.” JoAnn also takes Body Pump weight-lifting classes and a stretch and balance class at the Y with a goal of someday being able to stand on one leg when she isn’t in the water. “I don’t know if that will ever happen, but I keep trying.”

Learn something new

In 1995 after Bill Stewart, 77, retired from Bellarmine University, he came up with a way to continue his love of education by founding The Veritas Society. The former dean of students was advising older students in continuing education at the time of his retirement, so it made perfect sense. The organization provides lifelong learning experiences for men and women 54 and older. “I call it leisure learning,” Bill said. “You have the freedom to learn without the pressure — no homework, grades, or exams.” Classes are held at Bellarmine, Bill said. “Attending classes gets you out of the house and gets you mingling socially with people your own continued on page 12

I’ve been to all of her games and many practices and now I‘ve learned about a sport I never knew existed.” Megan plays the viola. “I don’t play anything,” Sandra said. “I have no talent, but I’ve been to a million wonderful concerts because of her. The Louisville Youth Orchestra played in November with My Morning Jacket. Megan has introduced me to things I wouldn’t have done otherwise… I probably would never have gone to a My Morning Jacket concert.” Sandra is also the president of a mystery readers and writers group, the Ohio River Valley chapter of Sisters in Crime, and has written short stories that were published in two anthologies, Derby Rotten Scoundrels and Low Down and Derby. She compiled the second anthology and is currently working on a third with the bourbon industry as the theme. For five years, Sandra has been on the Prospect City Council and serves as the liaison to the Prospect Library committee and attends meetings dealing with Prospect’s historic preservation related to the Bi-State Bridges Project.

Take some tips from these active individuals. Don’t just quit. Keep learning, moving, and get involved in social activities with your peers and with young people. Find something you love and use it to exercise your body and your brain. Stay young! t o d a y ’ s

Grandparent What Kind are You?

ave you ever wondered what your adult kids really think about you as a grandparent? Are you interested in knowing if your daughter talks about Nana when she “does lunch” with her friends? Or if your daughter-in-law tells outrageous Bubbe stories at her book club? If not, you are probably in the 5 percent of American women who believe, ‘What other people think about me is none of my business.’ But, if you’re like the rest of us, it’s probably crossed your mind that 14

someone else may be judging you. Regardless, most grandparents will benefit from advice given by their adult children. Lisa and Dave Braunstein live in Louisville with their 5-year-old daughter Sophie. Dave is a dentist in Crestwood, and Lisa works as his office manager. Sophie is a very outgoing and imaginative kindergarten student. Dave’s parents, Bill and Sandy, live about a mile away from them while Lisa’s parents, Ruth and Mike, live in South Carolina. Both sets of grandparents are retired and in good health. “We have been very blessed because Dave’s parents have been able to help with child care since I started working,” said Lisa. “Sophie is very close with them continued on page 16 t o d a y ’ s

and loves them dearly. They pick Sophie up from school twice a week when I work late at the office. In the past they have picked her up from preschool or summer camp three to four days a week. We couldn’t manage without them.” Lisa said that Sandy and Bill also babysit for Sophie when they go out to the movies or dinner. “Sophie has also attended some plays with Bill and Sandy,” said Lisa. “Dave’s parents have been a great support system for us.” Lisa said she regrets that her parents live so far away and don’t have the opportunity to get together with the family as often as they’d like.

Adult Children Need Our Help Offer to babysit, pick-up or deliver from school, and take grandchildren on special outings. Helping hands are greatly appreciated! Grandparents can view this time as a chore added to their “to do” list or as precious time to bond with their grandchild. The ride home from day care may become “story time.” When you babysit, make it special! “Discovery time” as simple as a walk around the neighborhood or as involved as a hike in the woods are loved by kids and sometimes hard for parents to do. Collect leaves, identify birds, and notice the great outdoors. You can even have “Discovery time” in the grocery store. Let your grandchild find a food she’s never tried. Buy it...maybe she’ll like it! The trick is to do what BOTH of you enjoy. Delight in this chapter of your life. As with all other phases, it is fleeting. 16

Andrea is the mother of three children, Mike, Josh, and Susan (not real names). Andrea said that her mother, who lives a few hours away, believes the adage ‘What happens at Grandma’s, stays at Grandma’s.’ “My mom thinks that when my kids walk in the door, the rules walk out,” Andrea said. “I can’t convince her to keep our rules. She believes it’s her prerogative to spoil her grandchildren, and my obligation to discipline them.” Andrea said that while she wants her children to have a good time with her mother, she’d appreciate some support. Lisa Braunstein was in full agreement. “I think that grandparents need to respect their children when it comes to making decisions regarding parenting the grandchildren,” she said.

Respect and Support the Values, Rules, and Decisions of your Adult Children If your approach to child-rearing is exactly the same as your children’s, that’s great! If not, a grandparent should respect the rules of the parents. The fastest way to ruin the relationship between parents and grandparents is for the grandparents to disregard parental authority. This is where your memory comes in handy. If you find yourself tempted to break the rules, just think how upset you’d have been if your children’s grandparents had attempted to do the same. This doesn’t mean that you have to be a drill sergeant and your house has to become boot camp. If you have multiple grandchildren, it is possible that one or two of them will have a special place in your heart. But showing favoritism can be extremely hurtful to your other grandchildren who, through no fault of their own, may not occupy that special place in your heart. Every child is a blessing. Do your best to make all your grandchildren feel equally loved. This is a vital responsibility for all grandparents. One-on-one time with “difficult” grandchildren can allow their sweet side to emerge. All of your grandchildren (whether they are adopted, stepgrandchildren, special needs, or just difficult kids) need you.

You may never know what your children really think about you as grandparents. But does it really matter? Isn’t what your grandchildren think about your relationship more important? Can your granddaughter say, “Nana taught me how to pray”? Can your grandson say, “I love to go fishing with Gramps”? Can each of your five grandchildren say “Grandma loves me the best”? f you were asked to carry a backpack with one brick in it, you could probably do it without much effort. But after walking a few steps, another brick is added to the backpack. Still not so bad. But as you continue to walk, more and more bricks are added to the point that you can’t even lift the bag, much less continue with your day’s activities.

Much like bricks on your back, taking several pills a day can be a heavy load that makes walking through life a challenge. Pharmacists Lynn Harrelson, owner of Senior Pharmacy Solutions, and Demetra Antimisiaris, lead faculty working on polypharmacy initiative at University of Louisville, discuss how to make this burden bearable. Cut Down Your Meds Harrelson and Antimisiaris both agree that the first step to managing your medications is cutting down on the number of pills you take. As you begin to see multiple physicians for multiple conditions, a problem known as polypharmacy arises, as patients take several medications from several sources without any one physician or pharmacist knowing how the pills are interacting with one another. “All your meds haven’t even been put in one glass of water to see how they react,” Antimisiaris says. “Medication-related problems are number six in ‘diseases’ for elders. There are two million hospitalizations for adverse drug reactions a year, and 200,000 of those end in death.” “The heart doctor doesn’t want to adjust the kidney doctor’s medicine, and the kidney doctor doesn’t want to adjust the heart doctor’s medicine,” Harrelson adds. “When you have multiple conditions, you start to have continued on page 22

side effects.” Antimisiaris goes on to explain that people sometimes mistake side effects of one medication as symptoms of another condition, which leads people to believe that they need to take yet more pills for the new “condition.” “Medicines today are highly manipulated to get rid of side effects, but that might make it more difficult for the body to get rid of,” Harrelson says. “Our livers haven’t changed much in the last 50 years. We are like a filtration system that’s being tested to the max.” Get Organized Once your pill regimen is under control, there still remains the daily task of taking the pills as prescribed. Although there are many products that can assist with this, Harrelson says accountability is most important. “I can work my magic and tell you when things should be taken, but I can’t make you swallow the pill,” she says. Having either a loved one or a healthcare professional check with you consistently lessens the pressure on you to have to remember and risk missing a dose. Sit down with all the instructions and labels of your medications and create a large calendar that everyone who comes to your home

Antimisiaris gives the following tips for narrowing your number of pills: • Keep what you need; get rid of what you want. A “want” pill might include something you take just to help you sleep, such as Tylenol PM. • Keep a diary of how you’re feeling and share it with your doctor. Your doctor or pharmacist may be able to identify patterns in your side effects and adjust your dosages to keep you from having to take additional medications. • Stop taking a drug for a week to see if the symptom goes away. Be sure to check with your doctor before you do this. You may find that the cost and the side effects of the drug outweigh its benefits. • Sit down with a pharmacist and all of your pills. A Horse, Of Course

s a former preschool teacher I was always making up games that my 4-year-old students would like. One of the favorites was, “What kind of animal would you like to be?” Since it’s a game of imagination, I pretended I was Barbara Walters using a variation on her “What kind of tree would you be?” question. When Barbara played her game, the famous celebrities paused appropriately or would possibly tear up if the tree had particular significance from childhood. When my children played the game, they delighted in oinking or pretending to fly. I will always remember the day when one of them (a future Barbara, I’m sure) turned the tables and asked ME what kind of animal I’d like to be. I decided I needed to give it some thought. Since I am allergic to most animals, it is not easy to decide what kind of animal I would like to be, much less why. Cats and dogs wreak havoc on my sinuses unless it’s Snoopy or Garfield, and I can’t swim so being a fish is definitely out. A lot of my children wanted to be birds so they could fly, but I’m afraid of heights. Going to the bathroom on people’s cars is another turn off. I’m much too clean to want to be a pig. The only mud I’m interested in is found at the spa. I don’t like milk, so why would I want to be a cow? And besides, those farmers get way too familiar, if you ask me. Being a chicken would be exhausting because I’d have to be on constant alert for agents of Colonel Sanders. The only animal I can even remotely relate to is a horse. Now this isn’t because I love riding them because I’ve never been on one. It has more to do with growing up in Kentucky, where horses are revered. Florida has Disney World,

Washington D.C. has that special white house, but Kentucky has Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. The closest I’ve been to a horse comes when I watch television on Derby Day or go to the track. Of course I wouldn’t want to be just any old nag. That’s a horse of a different color completely. I would want to be a Thoroughbred with the winning jockey riding me to the finish line. And I’ve always been a sucker for roses. So I guess being a horse is all about pride and power. I want to be a winning horse so I don’t have to worry about ending up being the main attraction at kids’ birthday parties. I’m very competitive, and I love to exercise so being a horse is definitely the way to go for me. I’m sure I would get more respect/attention being a fast horse rather than a fast woman. Thoroughbreds are very well cared for by their owners. Their meals are carefully prepared, so I’d never have to worry about dieting. Besides, I don’t think there are a lot of calories in oats and hay. I would get regular massages, or rub downs in horse terminology, and I wouldn’t have to worry about medical insurance because they have veterinarians on staff. As a Derby winner, (if I’m going to be a horse I want to be THE best one) I would have adoring fans and photo shoots. I’d never have to worry about retirement because a glue factory is nowhere in this horse’s future. When they put me out to pasture it will be on a glorious Kentucky horse farm, where my only duty would be breeding future Derby winners. It’s a rough job, but some horse has to do it. I might even get a shot at movies like Seabiscuit and Secretariat. Whatever the perks, I would definitely want to be a winning Kentucky Thoroughbred. No dog’s life for me. I don’t fetch or roll over. I want to be the kind of animal that goes into the record books, and is remembered for generations to come. Best of all, I wouldn’t have to worry about finding the perfect Derby hat. Louisville Ballet The Louisville Ballet closes the season with Adam Hougland’s powerful interpretation of Rite of Spring.
