Kim Potts is our quarterly Care Package for the Caregiver winner. Her prize includes tickets to a Derby Dinner Playhouse performance and four hours of sitter service from Home Instead Senior Care. Why She Won: Taking care of others in need — especially older adults — is a normal part of Kim Potts’ life, says her sister Michele Gallo, who nominated Kim for the Care Package for the Caregiver award. “My sister is a very giving and unselfish person. She cares for elderly residents who live in a complex across the street from her. She takes out their trash and cooks their meals,” Michele says. For 10 years, Kim has been caring for Norma Potts, their 76-year-old aunt, who was diagnosed with dementia. Three days a week, Kim drives from her home in Shively to Fern Creek where Norma resides and stays with her from 8am until 3pm. Initially, Kim had been seeing Norma five days a week until she began working a part-time job at Kroger. Kim prepares the meals and assists with feeding and grooming her, but Kim says Norma’s husband Rhuel, 79, has played an equally important role in Norma’s well-being. “He wakes up three to four times at night to care for her...she is his first priority,” Kim says. Kim’s dedication as Norma’s caregiver also comes from her desire to ensure that Rhuel has time to participate in activities he enjoys.

Recently, they installed iN2L (It’s Never Too Late) technology, which includes over 3,000 applications designed to help residents improve their social engagement, physical health, and cognition. The technology, operated through a touchscreen feature, is accessible through their adjustable television console, tablet, and a roller kiosk. Clinton Spaulding, director of activities at Wesley Manor Retirement Community, says residents can listen to their favorite music, play a trivia game, create artwork, and setup their own profile page that will allow them to Skype with their family. Cliff Whalin, director of marketing, says i2NL brings people out of isolation and familiarizes them with technology. “My favorite memory is of a 6-year resident who is not vocal but reacts to music. The church he belonged to only listened to a cappella Gospel music, and when we played this type of music for him [using the program], he began to sing.
