You’ll learn about five types of exercises that are ideal for toning your muscles, maintaining balance, and keeping your heart strong.

Lending a helping hand can enhance both your life and the life of others. Once a week Janet Raderer, who learned her sewing skills from her mother and grandmother, passes that knowledge on to women from other countries by volunteering at Kentucky Refugee Ministries. She enjoys working with the women as they gather together to just relax and have fun. “This is not job training,” Janet says. “This is a time for the women to meet and share their stories and at the same time learn sewing techniques for their personal enjoyment.”

But, having a busy social life doesn’t have to mean frequent lunching with the ladies, countless dinners at eight, and an endless round of charity balls and cocktail parties. Janet Raderer and husband Tom Raderer have found ways to keep up with friends, families, and themselves by making conscious choices on how they fill their social calendars in retirement. While Tom, 61, a retired mechanical engineer with the Louisville Water Company, is active in various professional organizations, Janet, 60, has enough interests in reading, sewing, and knitting to keep the squares of her calendar filled. “We sit down every Sunday night to preview our week,” Janet said. “We map out when we will be home together for meals and when one or both of us will be out. Tom keeps a pocket calendar and I have the kitchen calendar. If I am going to be out for dinner, sometimes we will eat a bigger meal at lunch, and Tom just sort of grazes in the evening.” They both retired at age 55 and together they volunteer with their church, Highland Presbyterian, have season tickets to Actors Theatre where they have attended plays for 35 years, are huge fans of University of Louisville women’s basketball, and walk with another couple in Cherokee Park, Cave Hill, the Louisville Zoo, or at the reservoir.

“The Cherokee Park route is the real test,” she said. “It runs up and down hills for about three miles. Now that I am retired, I don’t really have an excuse for not exercising.” But she wants to exercise her mind as well as her body. Since retiring from her job as part-time elementary school librarian with Jefferson County Public Schools, Janet has joined a book group that meets monthly. “We have eight members who rotate hosting the meeting and lunch at their home. I knew some of the members before I joined. I wanted to have some direction to my reading choices. The last book we read, Things Fall Apart by Chinua AchebeI, I didn’t particularly like, but we had a fascinating discussion.” Another way Janet stays intellectually active is through her membership in the Monday Afternoon Club, which meets weekly from October through April at the St. Matthews Library. The club was formed in 1887 for the encouragement of culture among women. “Each week a member presents a 30-minute research paper in one of three categories that are decided on each year. It is fun to hear what interests the members. I have heard papers as far reaching as the history of coffee and coffee shops, service dogs for injured soldiers, and India. I think it is fun to do the research.” Janet herself has written papers on Al Capone, WASPs — not the stinging insect but the Women Airforce Service Pilots of Book clubs, author lectures, and book signings are a wonderful way to keep World War ll — and a history of fasteners intellectually stimulated in retirement. Finding the right financial advisor is the first step to protecting and growing your money

ith so many options available to manage and invest your money, it is difficult to know where to begin. Are you a financial risk taker or a conservative penny pincher? Do you need help with a monthly budget, or do you track all of your expenses? These are common questions you might ask yourself when planning your financial future. You may realize that you are comfortable with a simple savings account while your friends may be knee-deep in managing their own portfolio.

If you are looking for guidance, one option is to work with a financial advisor. There are several services that financial advisors can provide including investment and estate planning, cash management, and budgeting. However, before you choose your advisor, there are a few things to consider. Developing a trusting relationship with your advisor is important to building a solid foundation for your financial future. Meeting with several advisors before choosing yours is a great way to get a sense of how you think you would work with that continued on page 14

Become Title Savvy Initials can be confusing in the financial arena, but we have compiled a list of the most common financial advisor designations to help you understand how to make the best decisions about managing your money. CFP: Certified Financial Planner

CFA: Chartered Financial Analyst

CPA: Certified Public Accountant

CLU: Chartered Life Underwriter

Certified Financial Planners must pass a series of exams and enroll in ongoing education classes, as well as have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution. Knowledge of estate planning, tax preparation, insurance, and investing is required, and at least three years of work experience in a related field.

Chartered Financial Analysts must pass tests in economics, accounting, security analysis, and money management administered by the Association for Investment Management and Research. They are expected to have at least three years of investments-related experience and meet certain standards of professional conduct. Individuals or corporations use their services as security analysts, portfolio managers, or investment advisors.

Certified Public Accounts must pass the uniform CPA examination administered by the American Institute Of Certified Public Accountants, and receive state certification to practice accounting. An individual usually has to complete five years of education, and a certain degree of work experience. CPAs can legally give public attestation to advice on financial statements; for example, only a CPA can sign an in-house audit.

The designation is granted by the American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania to individuals who have completed training in life insurance and personal insurance planning. To obtain the designation, individuals must complete advanced courses and exams in several topics including insurance, investments, taxation, employee benefits, estate planning, accounting, management and economics.

CRPC- Charter Retirement Planning Counselor Individuals who hold the CRPC designation have completed a course of study encompassing pre-and post-retirement needs, asset management, estate planning and the entire retirement planning process using models and techniques from real client situations. Individuals must pass an end-ofcourse examination that tests their ability to synthesize complex concepts and apply theoretical concepts to real-life situations.

person. Ask questions on their background in the industry, what their focus is, and if they have clients you can speak to for reference. Whether you have a small or large amount of money, it is still your money and being comfortable with your advisor is key. “You and your financial advisor are a team,” says Mark Kull, a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual. “He or she should be someone you wouldn’t mind introducing to your friends as someone who is helping you plan your financial future.” Knowing your end goal is important when first meeting with a financial advisor. Creating a financial plan, for example, is very different from wanting someone to manage your money and assets for you. Researching types of plans and services will help you determine those goals. Also, it is important to talk with others who will be included in your financial plan. Although you may have the same financial goals, each person may be thinking about taking different paths to accomplish those goals. For example, Kull says, “If someone wanted to plan for retirement, it is important to have a clear picture of how much money is needed monthly based on estimated expenses. He or she should also know each type of income — Social Security or a pension for example.” Those estimated expenses are the primary concern for Marie Unger. “I’ve started putting money away for health care — that’s the biggest unknown for me.” Unger and her husband work with a financial planner to ensure they can reach their goal of retiring 14

at 55 while putting their son through college. “It is definitely worth it to seek the advice of a financial planner — it really opened our eyes to a lot of things.” Unger says their advisor helped them realize how important it is to record everything from liquid assets and property to 401k plans and pensions. Also, when meeting with an advisor, it can be helpful to bring any legal documents, such as a will or trust, and a monthly budget if you have one. The better your documentation, the stronger your financial plan will be. It is important to remember that just because you have a financial planner does not mean that you no longer have to be involved with your financial future. To continue to ensure that your financial plan is optimal and your goals are being met, you should plan to meet with your advisor about three times a year to review your portfolio. There may be on-line options available for you to review your account at your convenience to help you stay involved with your plan. Also, do not get discouraged if you have a setback in sticking with your plan. “The biggest problem I see people have is delineating between wants and needs. You may think you need that new kitchen, but, in reality, it’s a luxury item,” says Kull. Unger agrees. “You have to be prepared for the commitment because financial planning can bring lifestyle changes. It’s not just about money; it’s really more about life planning.” A solid financial plan is essential, and, if you are ready to make the commitment, you can work with an advisor to take charge of your future. t o d a y ’ s

Caring for an Aging Relative By Lisa M. Petsche

f you have an aging parent or other close relative who lives alone, you may be concerned that they are no longer able to look after all of their day-to-day needs. Typical indictors include changes in grooming, hygiene, nutrition, housekeeping, financial management, medication compliance, mobility, energy level, and mental status. Getting Help Here are some ways to help, depending on your relative’s situation.

WHEN HELP IS REFUSED What if your relative clearly needs help but won’t accept it? The approach to take depends on your relative’s personality and the nature of your relationship, but here are some general guidelines.

MANAGING STRESS While it can have its rewards, caring for an aging relative involves physical, psychological, emotional, and financial demands. The following are some strategies to help keep stress manageable.

Arrange for a medical checkup and accompany your relative. Lethargy, forgetfulness, and confusion could be caused by infection, dehydration, or depression. Request a medication review by their family doctor or pharmacist, since side effects or drug interactions may be the source of difficulties. If nutrition is an issue, arrange a dental appointment to have your relative’s teeth or dentures checked; set up a schedule to take them grocery shopping; stock the freezer with heat-and-serve foods; have them over for dinner; and arrange for nutritional supplements if necessary. If vision is a problem, ask the doctor for a referral to an ophthalmologist. If nothing can be done to improve your relative’s vision, get them a magnifier for reading small print and other adaptive items such as a large-keypad telephone and a clock with oversized numbers. If falls are a concern, perform a safety assessment to identify potential home hazards and do what you can to rectify them. If financial management is an issue, arrange for direct deposit of pension checks and automatic bill payment from your relative’s bank account. Have a lawyer assist your relative in assigning a power of attorney to one or two people they trust. Investigate available resources in your relative’s community that may be of help. Information can be obtained from the local office on aging. Raise concerns gently. Use “I” statements - for example, “I notice that...” or, “I’m worried that...” Provide concrete examples. Emphasize your relative’s abilities and how these can be supported. Stress that your aim is to help them remain at home and maximize their independence. Organize a family meeting if your relative denies problems. Gently probe to learn the reasoning behind your relative’s refusal of help. Listen and respect their point. Be attuned to underlying feelings and demonstrate empathy. Share brochures or information from the Internet. Highlight equipment and services that are free or subsidized. Focus initially on the least intrusive options, such as setting up an emergency response system or obtaining medical equipment. Offer to pay, or contribute to, the cost of medical equipment, community programs or services if your relative has limited income. If your relative is mentally capable, recognize that they have the right to put themselves at risk. You may need to agree to disagree about what’s best for them. Look after your health: eat nutritious meals, get adequate rest, exercise, and get regular medical checkups. Find something relaxing you can do every day. Stay connected to the important people in your life. Educate yourself about any medical diagnoses your relative may have. Take things one day at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed. Give yourself permission to feel all of the emotions that surface. Don’t try to handle things alone. Ask other family members to help. Join a caregiver support group in your community or on the Internet.

So, I What Now?

n an ideal world, you will have spoken with your aging loved ones before they need any assistance with care. You will know their end-of-life wishes; you will designate a power-of-attorney; you will research local care providers, associated costs, and organizations that can help; and, you will discuss which family members or friends will contribute their time and finances to your senior’s care.

Caring for Someone Who Needs Home Health care

But ideal worlds can be very different from real worlds. Patty Dissell, executive director of the non-profit organization SeniorCare Experts, knows firsthand that people postpone this important conversation. “Typically, you don’t pre-plan because life is just so busy,” she explains, “and then all of a sudden something happens, something glares at you in the face that makes you think, ‘I have to do something now.’” When faced with the reality that a loved one will need help with care, it’s good to know that Kentuckiana offers numerous adult day care, Alzheimer’s care, assisted living, home health care, nursing/rehabilitation, and personal care services. Dissell knows how confusing and frustrating the initial learning and researching process can be. “People don’t know where to turn at this point and they end up calling six different places trying to get six different services. We want a caregiver’s first call to be to SeniorCare Experts. We’re going to find out exactly what [the senior and caregiver] need. When we are working with the caregivers, if a certain need is not under our umbrella, we could introduce them to one of our community partners who could help take care of their loved one.” Sometimes a nursing home is best, Dissell acknowledges, especially for certain medical conditions, but home health care can provide many seniors with the resources necessary to live independently, or with a spouse, an adult child, or other family member. Since each senior’s situation is different, the first step to deciding about home health care providers is assessing everyone’s needs. Two main things that the service provider looks for are the risk of falling and over- or undertaking medications. (Dissell notes that oftentimes these two are related: many seniors fall because they aren’t getting properly medicated.) Dissell confesses that her own father had an issue when taking medication. She explains, “I would put all those pills out, line them up, and label them with the right day. After my dad took Monday’s pills, though, he would walk back into the kitchen at a different time and, because he

had dementia, he would forget what day it was, and would take Tuesday’s pills, too. I found out that he eventually took four or five days’ worth of pills in one day.” It’s easy to see why falls and medication would be the primary concerns. Luckily, technology has been developed to address these issues and to give seniors more independence. Dissell lauds the helpfulness of a pill dispenser she and staff have nicknamed “The Pill Lady.” “A caregiver can program the dispenser to give out medications at certain times of the day, and it will only dispense at those times,” she explains. “The Pill Lady also gives voice reminders: ‘Mr. Smith, it’s time to take your medicine.’ Then, a little louder: ‘Mr. Smith it’s time to take your medicine!’ He pushes a button and it dispenses the exact medication that he needs. If he does not press the button, then a computerized voice message is sent immediately to his caregiver. This would have been helpful in my dad’s case because the machine would not have given him any medicine if it weren’t time yet.” Technology assists seniors with falls as well. SeniorCare Experts and others offer LifeLine auto alert that the individual wears around his or her neck. If a senior falls and either forgets to hit the button or can’t hit the button, the mechanism still detects the fall. A live person will call and ask if the senior is okay. If there is no answer, then 911 is called. Dissell asserts that “the technology has advanced so much that it’s allowing the seniors to be safer.” In addition to providing technology, certain home health services can also bring meals to your loved one, visit with him or her, help sort bills and make sure they are paid, provide transportation, and of course provide personal or medical care such as physical or occupational therapy. She states, “With home health care, the caregiver is still directly involved with what’s going on, but no longer has to be the one doing everything.” Karen Cooper, a 57-year-old childcare worker, unexpectedly found herself needing home health care services for her mother five years ago. Her mother, Carolyn McFarland (now age 82), lived alone without any problems, but one day she fell and broke her hip. Carolyn was recovering, but she fell again at the rehab center. She suffered a traumatic brain injury when the rehab center neglected to give her proper medical attention after her fall. Cooper recalls how tragic it was that a vibrant, funny woman who paid her bills, cooked, and took care 20

of herself on her own was now completely dependent upon others after she suffered the brain injury. Over the course of five years, Cooper has worked with numerous nursing and rehab facilities and home health care services such as CareTenders and Baptist Hospital East Home Health. Cooper stressed many times that good, effective caregivers are proactive: they learn what they need to know and problem-solve. For example, when Carolyn had one of her multiple urinary tract infections, she wouldn’t eat and was severely dehydrated and malnourished. Cooper suggested a feeding tube, and the doctor agreed. She reports, “My mom went from 78 pounds to 120 pounds!” Because her mother has had so many UTI’s, Cooper feels like a nurse: “I know all the symptoms, all the signs. I know exactly when she gets them because she fazes out, she’s in another world somewhere. She’ll think she’s sleeping somewhere different or her urine will smell different. It’s crazy what you pick up on.” Cooper also suggests being proactive when dealing with doctors and nurses. When Carolyn was in a nursing facility, Cooper brought a candy dish to her mother’s room and filled it with “the good stuff”: Snickers, 3 Musketeers, etc. Cooper told the nurses to come in any time and help themselves to the candy. Not only did this show her appreciation for the work that the nurses did, but “it also resulted in the nurses coming in to chat and check up on my mom more often!” Caregivers like Cooper also work closely with home health care workers by observing, asking questions, and making suggestions, so that the combined efforts will ensure the best care for their loved ones. When I asked her if she felt like the home health care providers were like a part of her team, she emphatically said, “Definitely. I really get to know the workers, who are very caring and involved.” Cooper acknowledges that many caregivers are a little apprehensive about letting someone into their home at first. “New caregivers feel like they have to cook and clean everything before a worker comes to their home. Let me tell you….the workers don’t care what your house looks like!” According to Cooper, home health care workers don’t just come to your home, do the physical things that need to be done, and then rush out. “You get to know them. They get personal and are there for you emotionally,” she explains. “One nurse even brought mom homemade cookies for Christmas. Bride Groom

ummer is not just the season for vacations and suntans. It is also the season for weddings. According to Google, June is still the most popular month to get married. I agree, since most of our wedding invitations seem to arrive with the arrival of summer.

I love weddings. I always cry and I always reminisce. Weddings are a time for renewal and review. Who hasn’t attended a wedding and not thought of her own? I believe every couple attending is taking mental inventory of their own marriage, or at least half of every couple. While every woman is thinking of her own wedding, most men are probably looking at their watches and wondering how much longer until they can get home to watch TV. Most women at a wedding are looking around and wondering about all the other couples sitting there. Why is it we always think everyone else has the perfect relationship? I suppose it is part of the old “grass is greener” syndrome. I don’t care how perfect that couple looks, you have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. The grass may look greener, but upon closer inspection you are going to turn up weeds. “Be careful what you wish for” should be a maxim we remember whenever we start thinking someone else has it better than we do. Wanting the perfect relationship comes from reading way too many fairy tales growing up. I don’t care how educated/or successful we are, women still want prince charming — at least on some level. Oh sure, we want equal pay and career advancement along with help with the kids, housework, and yard work. But there is still a part of every woman that wants to live happily ever after. Isn’t that how the fairy tale ends? On the rare occasion a good friend and I lament the lack of princeliness in our husbands when they get on our nerves, and particularly when we see other couples holding hands or looking adoringly at each other after 30-plus years. Our envy gets the best of us at times, and we long to be what we refer to as “the bride and groom.” “Look at them! Aren’t they just perfect together? 22

They are still the ‘bride and groom’. Yeah, they’re right there on top of that cake, all right.” And where are we? We’re sure not on top of the cake anymore. Heck, we fell off so long ago we rolled under the cake and got swept out with the crumbs! Of course we exaggerate but we cannot help longing to be the bride and groom, if only for a moment. In that moment we realize we did not fall off the cake alone. What about our husbands? While we’re busy criticizing and critiquing his every move, maybe he’s seeing other husbands that he envies, too. With all this equality going around, maybe he’d like his turn at being swept off his feet once in a while. And I’m sure plenty of husbands out there have to squint to see the “princess” they once married and adored. It is normal to get comfortable. It is normal to criticize on occasion. What we need to remember is how to criticize. If you want to be treated like the bride, be sure you let your husband know he is still your groom. You can be comfortable without becoming complacent. Let your spouse know you do not take him for granted. Don’t forget all those wonderful qualities that made him your groom in the first place. Whoever said marriage is 50/50, never stayed married for long. Most of the time marriage is more like 30/70 or 10/90. That’s what it’s all about — being strong enough to carry the load when your spouse is down. Isn’t this just the numerical version of “for better or for worse?” Anyone who marries expecting an equal partnership had better stay single and get a business partner instead. In the meantime, if you are still longing to be treated like the bride you were in your youth, try a little reciprocating for your spouse. Let him know you still see him as your groom, and you just might find yourself back on top of the cake with him by your side. I realized how much I had grown in our marriage the last time my husband and I attended a wedding. After my usual cry, I found myself looking at my watch and wondering how soon we could get home to watch TV together. It is gratifying to know that after almost 40 years, we are closer than ever as a couple and my groom has only grown princelier with age. ary Myers is a natural born leader. And when this 53-yearold woman sets her sight on something, she simply makes it happen. For instance, she decided she wanted to clean house for one of Louisville’s most famous residents.

“I saw on TV that basketball coach Rick Pitino was moving to town. I found out which part of town he was living in, and I went over there one day and started asking around,” she explains. She soon found out where Pitino lived. “I just walked up to the door and knocked,” she continued. Her resumé was impressive enough and her business, TLC Cleaning Service, was contracted. Myers tells this story and every other success story so matter-of-factly that she makes her achievements sound like a walk in the park. “My motto is, ‘no doesn’t hurt.’ If someone tells me no, I just keep moving,” she says. Myers is passionate and driven to succeed. After working for years as a receptionist at Merrill Lynch, she decided it was time to go in a different direction. “I was no longer happy doing that,” she says. “I wanted to own a shopping service.” Though she admits she was always afraid to strike out on her own, because she didn’t want her family to lose medical insurance coverage, fate would give her the nudge she needed to quit. “My mother became very ill, so I left the job to help take care of her,” she says. During that time she also suffered the loss of several family members including her father and father-in-law. “All this made me think of what God’s purpose was for me.” This turn of events made her even more determined to become selfemployed in order to dedicate time to her loved ones. While promoting her shopping service at the Louisville Women Show, she held a raffle for a huge gift basket and 1,000 people signed up. “I couldn’t believe it,” she says. She started thinking that gift baskets would probably make a good business and in 1998 she opened WE

Baskets and More on Frankfort Avenue. Despite her hard work and determination to make it on her own, WE Baskets and More soon succumbed to high overhead costs. She knew the entrepreneurial path was the one she should stay on, so this proved to be only a minor setback. “When I was younger I used to clean houses, so I always knew I could go back to doing that,” she said. This is how the idea for TLC Cleaning Service started. This business took off and the freedom self-employment provided allowed her to dedicate time to community service which is her other passion. Most importantly, being self-employed allowed her to invest time with her son who was born with a learning disability and become an advocate for other children. “I come from a community-minded family, and I was always involved a little. But when my son was born with his issues, I knew this was the path I was meant to go down.” Her passion for helping others and making a difference led her to her latest venture of providing support to elderly people. For Myers, owning TLC — her current business — has been a long time in the making. Her services are designed to make life as easy as possible for her clients and include accompanying them to doctor’s appointments and taking notes so that she can relay the information to their loved ones. Light housekeeping, preparing meals, and even walking the dog are all services she provides. “When the University of Kentucky won the Final Four championship, one of my clients called and asked if I could pick up a UK T-shirt, so I went down to the store and got her one,” Myers says with a laugh. “This is a partnership. They need me and I need them. It’s a joy working for older people. I do this with the hope that when I need this type of help, there will be someone to care for me.” t o d a y ’ s

f it’s been a while since you’ve set foot in a fitness club or gym, you’re in for a surprise. Whether you prefer the more traditional types of exercise or want to try something new, there have never been so many ways to get in shape and stay fit. And if you’ve never worked out, there’s no better time to start.

“The current health recommendation is to exercise for at least 150 minutes per week,” says Dr. Jessica Stumbo, a physician affiliated with University of Louisville/Jewish Sports Medicine. “Any activity is better than none, but it’s best to choose a fitness program that incorporates strength training, flexibility, balance, and aerobic conditioning,” she says. “We lose muscle mass as we age, which leads to loss of strength,” says Stumbo. “Losing muscle mass combined with loss of flexibility can result in balance issues and lead to increased risk for falls and loss of independence in our later years.” Staying strong, balanced, and flexible helps keep us active and independent longer, while heart-strengthening aerobic exercise improves our endurance and stamina so we don’t tire as easily. “We can do many exercises at home, such as lifting weights, or lifting soup cans or milk cartons, riding a stationary bicycle, doing leg lifts on the floor, or simply walking around the living room while watching TV,” says Stumbo. But most of us would agree that getting out to a group fitness class is a lot more fun. A great variety of classes are offered, many of which are tailored to the needs of older adults and are offered at different levels of difficulty. “Try a class three times,” says Susan Reid, a yoga instructor at Northeast Family YMCA and at Yoga East in Louisville, “and try different instructors.” And when you find something you like, stick with it. continued on page 30 t o d a y ’ s

Here are some fun classes to get you started, no matter what your age or fitness experience. Zumba Gold Zumba Gold is a slower, quieter version of the popular dancethemed class. “There’ll be some seniors in the regular Zumba class, but for many it’s a little bit fast, the music is a little bit loud,” says Beth Mans, a fitness instructor at Northeast Family YMCA in Louisville, where Zumba Gold is offered. Because this class is geared to older adults, seniors can come in and have fun while enjoying “that building of community, that building of self-esteem and self-confidence” that a group fitness class provides, says Mans. Forever Fit Forever Fit, another YMCA class, is great for people who are less mobile. Many of the exercises are done in chairs using weights, balls and bands, and your instructor can easily modify the moves if you have any physical limitations or specific fitness needs. “You can come into any class we offer,” says Mans, “and if you can’t do overhead stuff, you’re going to do bicep curls instead, or you’re going to do squats instead of upper body work, so never think you can’t do it. Don’t underestimate yourself.” Aqua Fitness Aqua Fitness classes at the YMCA provide a workout while putting less stress on your joints. Mans likes to keep things very fresh and fun in her classes by incorporating games such as beach-ball volleyball in the pool. “You’ve got hand-eye coordination, and you’ve got mobility, all playing into these basic movements,” she says. For arthritis sufferers, water fitness classes are held in a warmer pool with “slow water-based aerobics, lots of stretching, strengthening,” and gentle movements. So even on your not-so-good days, you still have a reason “to get up and leave your house and come do something that’s going to engage you, something that will make you feel better,” says Mans. 30

Yoga Yoga classes range from gentle ones for beginners to dynamic ones for active practitioners. You can try them at yoga studios or at many of the fitness clubs and gyms throughout the area. One of the many health benefits of this discipline is an increase in strength and range of motion, and an extra bonus is the sense of calm and general well-being you get after a session, says Reid. “When you leave a yoga practice, you just feel good, and the whole rest of your day, no matter what comes up, you can tap into that feeling.” Tai Chi Tai Chi is a type of Chinese martial art that consists of slow, gentle, flowing movements and helps tremendously with balance and stability, says Jeffery Graham-Lietz, a certified Tai Chi instructor in Louisville. The Tai Chi walk teaches you to shift the weight from one foot to the other and to center yourself before picking up a leg to take a step, he explains, which lowers the risk of falling among seniors. “I’ve had students that have started with me at 92 years old,” he says, “and that’s what the first benefit of Tai Chi is — stability.” Practicing Tai Chi also increases strength and stamina, and improves circulation, says Graham-Lietz, and the slow gentle movements, with particular attention paid to all the joints in the body, are helpful for arthritis. My father recently developed a severe allergy to nuts and has to carry an adrenaline injection called an Epipen with him always. His doctor told him if he had even a minute exposure, it could cause him to go into anaphylactic shock and die without immediate medical attention. What do we need to know about this in order to protect him? –Betty Jane For those allergic to nuts, exposure can kill someone with a severe allergy at any age...just like a bee sting can do in moments without immediate medical attention for those allergic to bee stings. In order to develop this sort of life-threatening allergic reaction, the person has to have had that “substance” in their body at least once in order for the body to react to it. It may not always be the second or fifth or any specific length of time before the anaphylactic reaction develops. Every reaction is different with respect to timing. The substance that causes these deadly reactions can enter the body by different routes. By that, I mean not always by mouth, or a sting or even something touching the body like latex gloves. However, what all these types of anaphylactic reactions have in common is that death occurs once the anaphylactic reaction begins without that Epipen or immediate medical attention at the hospital. Every reaction of this sort becomes more violent each time an exposure occurs. continued on page 55

It is vital to avoid the allergen religiously. Never take any of these types of allergic reactions lightly. They are known as antigen-antibody reactions and can kill in minutes without proper intervention. Preventing the exposure becomes vital. Any food item your father buys could contain minute substances of nuts if the handler of that food item had nut oils on their own hands and touched the food product prior to sale. You have to read every label of everything you buy. If you don’t know what is in the food, don’t buy it. Once an anaphylactic reaction starts, the gut shuts down and liquid antihistamines like Benadryl for example cannot be absorbed by the stomach and consequently are ineffective. Only the adrenaline injection can stop it. The Epipen must be kept on the person at all times. Men can clip it in a shirt pocket; women can clip it on their slacks or in a handbag. It is adrenalin and must be stored at specific temperatures. It cannot be kept in a glove box in the car because if the adrenalin gets too cold or too warm it causes it to become unstable, sometimes get cloudy, and may not be effective.

“I describe my personal style as a mix of fun and frivolous fancy, but always comfortable. On a typical day, you’ll find me wearing a pair of capris and a comfortable loose fitting top with trendy jewelry. I love dressing up on the weekend and on special occasions. I like wearing dresses though nobody seems to like doing so anymore. I also like wearing heels.”

Where she shops

“I shop at Stein Mart for my trendy clothes and mix those with more traditional pieces from Ann Taylor and other department stores. I am a blouse freak, and I am a purse freak. I love fun tops. I also shop at consignment stores. You wouldn’t believe the things I find; some of them have never been worn. My favorite consignment store is Sassy Fox on Chenoweth Lane. Judy’s Consignment in Middletown is fabulous as well.”

Style philosophy

“Always be comfortable and age-appropriate. That’s how I structure what I wear with an accent of something trendy. I’m 66 years old, so I can’t wear my skirts real short these days. It takes some thought to be comfortable and trendy at the same time. You have to stop and say wait a minute, what are you trying to pull off here?”

Fashion therapy

“My dear daughter, Creighton Hopmann, has become sort of my wardrobe advisor. She’s brutally honest, but I like going shopping with her. She’ll let me know if I can pull off a trend or not. She’ll say ‘Mother, listen to me. That’s not working for you. Go upstairs and take that off.’”

Keeping fit and healthy

“I go to the YMCA three or four times a week. I do an aerobics class, which is just fabulous. It includes strength training, abdomen work, stretching, and Yoga. I stagger out of there. I am worked to the max, but I love it. I play tennis, and I occasionally golf. I follow a healthy diet as well.”

How a stylish lady relaxes

“In my down time, I love nothing more than to curl up with a book. My current book recommendations are The Forgotten Garden and Paris Wife.”
