Residential Buildings
Seeing shops getting replaced and new buildings getting built in the area, the aspect of change around the area is explored in the design. As a further study, the majority of the surrounding terrace houses are observed to be modified or changed by their owners. The functional requirement of the brief is to provide 50 homes on the site, where there is a road dividing it and also existing buildings neighbouring it. This reminded me on Aldo Rossi’s view of a city’s form as a collective of its monuments, which represents its permanent. Thus the project hopes to create a permanent framework in which the contents can be changed and modified to accommodate future needs and change along time. 2

Agar Grove Estate Technical Study Cardiff University, Welsh School of Architecture Year 3 Project Type: Academic, Technical Study Location: London, England Sector: Residential Date: Sep 2023 - Jan 2024 (4 Months)
As the largest Passivhaus scheme in the country, Agar Grove Estate provides insight into how medium/large scale developments meet building regulations and standards, and their relevant sustainability strategies. While concrete is used for structural strength, the carbon footprint is offset by the shorter construction and the low operation cost of the building. The prioritization of the facade allows high airtightness and thermal insulation, which is then paired with MVHR system and PV panels on the roof to further reduce operational energy.

Assumptions Made
The double bedroom is investigated as noise greatly affects sleep thus acoustics have more importance in it than in other rooms in apartments. The double bedroom also outnumbers single bedrooms in the apartments thus considered to be more useful to investigate it.
The room is observed to have plasterboard as its exterior wall finish and ceiling where air space is located above the ceiling plasterboard and 50mm glass fiber sound insulation is located behind the plasterboard of exterior wall. The flooring is observed to be a layer above the concrete structure. As there is a lack of information regarding the composition of interior walls, its surface is assumed to have same composition as the exterior wall's internal finish. The lack of information regarding individual flooring also lead to assumption concerning its material.

Private - Apartment
Cardiff University, Welsh School of Architecture Year 3 Project Type: Academic Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands Sector: Residential Date: Dec 2023 - Jan 2024 (2 Months)
The apartment spaces are arranged with consideration to their degree of privacy and cleanliness. The spaces are designed to allow direct connection to each other. The circulation to bedrooms are integrated with bookshelves to create a side function of a reading area. The strip of outdoor space removed windows from the building facade to allow user more freedom in their expression to the public.
Part of a larger group study of residence typology in Amsterdam, the study first looks into the structure and organisation strategies of 4 different buildings with simplified diagrams and photography of their appearance.
Degree of privacy
The diagrams of different buildings are then swapped between groups to be redesigned individually. Focusing on a new lobby, and a repeatable apartment layout surrounding a theme, in which I’ve chosen “user expression”. Degree of cleanliness

Concept Sketch
Exploring Foldable Stalls
Cardiff University, Welsh School of Architecture Year 2 Project Type: Academic Location: Chepstow, Wales Sector: Retail Date: Jan 2023 - May 2023 (4 Months) The project aims to revitalize the town’s high street by turning it into a destination for the surrounding area and creating more opportunities for local craftspeople and small businesses. The design reshapes the existing town square to include a sheltered walkway along the street, open spaces for community events, and foldable on-site stalls that make it easier for vendors to take part in local activities, particularly the weekly Sunday market. While much of the town’s historic heritage site lies elsewhere, the materials used in the market square reference its medieval and industrial past. Together with the existing 1960s building on the site, the project reflects the different periods of the town’s development and reconnects the square with its layered history.

Central atrium The design of this carpentry apprentices’ residence surrounds the theme of “connection”, where it physically connects the greenery on the two sides of the site, connects the users of the building, and connects the local community with its public spaces. To encourage interaction between users, communal facilities are spread across levels and openings are also placed along corridors to allow interactions across levels. The public space on the ground floor also serves as a space for locals and crafts fair for the local artists and craftsmen. The building being constructed from sustainably sourced timber and CLT also allows the residing carpenters to do small repairs by themselves, reducing the cost for maintenance and reduces its carbon footprint.

The flats layouts are first explored on a piece of paper with cut-outs of rooms, then the 3 typologies of flats are introduced to make the construction more standardized and also ensure the quality of the flats. The openings in the flats are oriented to not face directly into other’s flat, introduce sunlight, and also open up to the view to River Wye.

COMMUNAL UNIT
RESIDENTIAL HOUSE
As city land becomes more expensive, many young people are forced to move away from the communities they grew up in. This project explores a different way to add homes to dense urban areas without displacing existing families. A central structure provides shared platforms where residents can build and expand their homes over time, allowing families to grow while staying in the same neighbourhood. These platforms also create outdoor spaces, bringing qualities of traditional housing into a denser setting. The lower levels of the building include shops and shared facilities that support everyday life and reduce pressure on nearby streets and services. As housing demand increases, the structure can grow upward to add new homes gradually, allowing density to increase while maintaining strong community connections.
Levels starts building from the base.
A new level starts when the level reaches 80% capacity.
The remaining 20% of a level allows users to expand and extend their plots.
Communal floors will be added when population milestones are reached.
