


A rainwater retention pond on campus was selected as the site for a small structure, intended to foster relaxation and open-ended play. The design process begins with an experiential, mixed media site analysis and a series of sketches/sketch models. The proposed scheme responds to spatial fields created by the pond, rising above the cavity through an accumulation of angular surfaces, while twisting to conform to the direction of the pond itself and surrounding pedestrian ciculation.
A new fusion restaurant is slated to be built on a lot adjacent to active railroad tracks in a historic Georgia town. On the north side of the building where heavy foot traffic occurs, the pedestrian approach becomes a datum, splitting the restaurant into two distinct masses with outdoor dining spaces in between. The elongated mass shown above can be considered the focal point of the design, a dramatically cantilevered tunnel that sits parallel to the adjacent railroad tracks. This novel dining space is structurally aided by a counterweight system and provides direct views of passing trains and historic buildings, while capturing the locale’s roots as a railroad depot.
Vessel of Sculpture is intended to serve as both the gallery and studio of Ben Young, a contemporary sculptor from New Zealand. His works explore the vastness of the ocean and its connection to the seabed through tectonic assemblies of glass, concrete and steel, inspired by his experiences as a surfer and shipbuilder. With the motifs of this artwork in mind, the design process began by slicing the lot diagonally to accomodate a water feature to display large sculpture installations.
