With a spectacular group of speakers, now including author Michael Eason, highlighting the awesomeness and sustainability of a unique part of Texas and a guided tour of the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute, you won't want to miss out. TNLA will be taking a guided tour of the Cihuahuan Desert Research Institute Botanical Gardens, Cactus & Succulent Greenhouse, and the Pollinator Garden. The garden is laid out by plant family (roughly) and elevation including: Desert Specialty Garden Pollinator Garden Oak Collection & More Acanthus Family Catalpa Family Rose Family Sumac Family Legume Family (largest section), "Sky Island" Cypress and Pine Woodland Chihuahuan Desert Cactus Museum Collection Olive Family Heath Family Mint Family Verbena Family Figwort Family Memorial Grove of Chinkapin Oaks All of the trails are earthen paths. Some are uneven due to their composition of rock and soil. It is recommended to bring close-toed sneakers or hiking boots, water, sunscreen, hats, and walking sticks (if necessary). All the trails we will be on will be easy for most people. They are mostly flat with some slight grades.

WOMEN IN HORTICULTURE GET TOGETHER Volunteers from TNLA's Women in Horticulture kicked off their first conference call of the year to plan for the exciting events ahead. Many reported that business is booming and they are looking forward to an active Spring. This year TNLA is conducting not one but TWO Women in Horticulture GetTogethers. Ladies tell your friends and join us as we kick up dust at this year's Product Rodeo & Education Corral in Fort Worth, on February 27, 2020, and also come Find Your Greatness at Nursery/Landscape EXPO on August 13, 2020. You will not want to miss the chance to connect with your peers and exchange ideas one-on-one! TNLA UPDATE ON H-2B COALITION EFFORTS With over 100 U.S. House members and 30 Senators signing a bi-partisan letter to the Trump administration requesting the release of more H-2B visas, the pressure is on to help the green industry. The letter was delivered last week and, since then, key members of the coalition have been meeting with the Trump administration privately to urge the release of the visas as soon as possible. Simultaneously, industry advocates have already started to work on cap relief for FY 2021 and will be needing the help of grassroots industry members to get congressional support. Our hope is for a stand-alone bill which would be negotiated to provide real, long-term H-2B cap relief. Please stay tuned to the TNLA Legislative Action Center for alerts and updates.
TNLA PARTICIPATES ON WHITE HOUSE STAKEHOLDER CALL As press reports have recently indicated, the Trump administration has finalized a new rule replacing the Obama-era Waters of the United States rules which dramatically expanded the regulatory oversight of water. TNLA staff participated in a phone call with staff from the White House where they discussed the need for legal clarity on the part of landowners, business owners, and Ag producers alike. The new rule limits the definition of “waters of the United States� to four categories: territorial seas and navigable waters; perennial and intermittent tributaries; certain lakes, ponds and impoundments; and wetlands adjacent to jurisdictional waters. TEXAS SENATE COMMITTEE HEARING ON FUTURE WATER SUPPLY Two senate committees met last week in a joint hearing to discuss the future of Texas’ water supply and how the Legislature can incentivize shoring up our state’s water needs. TNLA staff was present to monitor the discussion on topics such as aquifer storage & recovery, green stormwater infrastructure, and regulations of groundwater in Texas. Committees are completing studies of their interim charges over the next several months before they issue reports & recommendations prior to the next legislative session.

HEB TEXAS BACKYARD HOLIDAY SHOW TNLA was invited to be part of the HEB Texas Backyard Holiday Show to talk about TNLA Certifications and HEB's new professional development initiative. HEB will be working to get their employees TCNP Certified. This means TNLA will become a common name within HEB Texas Backyards across Texas. HEB is wanting to separate themselves from the normal 'big box store' mentality, HEB wants their employees to truly be plant professionals. The Holiday Show was a great experience. The energy of the show flowed out of the rooms and an overall exciting buzz was felt throughout the show. HEB plans to have over 100 TNLA Certified Professionals by the end of 2020.
LANDSCAPE CHALLENGE & SKILLATHON San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo partnered with TNLA in 2016 to create a competition to promote horticulture and landscape design knowledge for future generations of Green Industry Professionals. Students from across the Lone Star State will come together to compete for the title of Grand Champion of the Landscape Challenge, plus a generous scholarship from the rodeo. TNLA will once again help to spark the passion for landscaping and plants with Texas' youth. Generous plant donors for the competition are Landmark Nurseries Inc. and Mortellaro's Nursery. IT IS TIME TO RODEO!
