Letters to the Editor Invisible

Aging is difficult in it self. Being invisible and ignored adds to the difficulty. Wisdom from experience is valuable. Our baby boomers, 19461964, have so much to offer. This generation is living longer and still in the workforce. Keeping up with technology is a challenge of its on. This generation was not raised with a laptop or iphone. The internet was introduced in 1969. The baby boomers lived through civil unrest, segregation, discrimination, the Vietnam War and much more. With this being said, think before ignoring them, they are not invisible. Call your grandparents.

Thank You For Listening To A Baby Boomer Donna Trotman

That’s why I’ve taken it

those small efforts have added up to bags and bags of trash removed from our streets. I don’t do it for recognition,I do it because I believe in leaving places better than I found them. And I know I’m not the only one who cares. But one person can only do so much. Imagine the impact if dozens, or hundreds of us committed to picking up just a little each week. Our town could become a model of cleanliness and pride. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about our planet. So here’s my challenge to you: the next time you’re out walking, bring a bag. Pick up a few pieces. Teach your kids by example. Share your efforts online to inspire others. If we all take ownership of the problem, we can transform our community from littered to beautiful.

Together, let’s prove that pride in our hometown is stronger than pollution.

Sincerely, Violet-Rose Davis

Roads “Bang for the Buck”

Surprise, surprise, maintaining our county roads is a problem. It is a challenge we share with most other jurisdictions. The open question is how do we deal with this “opportunity?” It’s no secret that Fannin County roads, with limited exception, are in terrible shape. To claim otherwise is to deny reality. Our roads are a problem our County Commissioners have been unsuccessfully dealing with for decades. We seem to lack the funds, manpower and knowhow to effectively address the problem. In the past trying the same thing over and over again hasn’t worked. Politics stand in the way. As all taxpayers know, throwing money on a problem doesn’t fix it. How do other Texas counties deal with bad roads? There are several methods of addressing the problem. Which is the most effective? The answer involves thought and reflection. In Texas at present there are primarily two basic alternative methods for counties to address the problem. One method is the road commissioner system, commonly referred to as the “precinct system.” This is the historic method of addressing the problem. Road repair within a precinct is left to the discretion of an individual commissioner, who is held accountable for performance once every 4-years at election time. Commissioners act independently within their precincts and are not required to plan, set priorities, cooperate, or pool equipment. The other method is the county engineer or road administrator system commonly referred to as the “unit system.” It is the modern way. Road repair is the responsibility of one qualified individual who is an employee-at-will subject to termination for failure to perform. Fannin County needs to take a long hard look at where we find ourselves. How do we get the most bang for our buck? This question warrants consideration. Let’s have some transparency, and open discussion. Time is a wasting.

Seeking God’s Face For True Revival Awakening

Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas

Last Wednesday night we had a very meaningful time of prayer for true revival and spiritual awakening. We prayed for “times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19-20) We prayed for “dry bones to come alive” spiritually. (Ezekiel 37) We prayed for a “contrite and humble spirit” that is necessary for revival. (Isaiah 57:15) We prayed for God to create in us a “clean heart” and for Him to

“renew a steadfast spirit within us.” (Psalm 51:10. We prayed for God to do a “new thing” in each one of our lives. (Isiah 43:18-19) We prayed for many other things as well. We also prayed for God to “heal our land.” The Word of God declares in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal

their land.” Our land needs healing so badly. Would you “seek His face” during these days? Not His hands. His face. To seek His face is to seek His face is to intensely pursue God’s presence, approval, and intimate fellowship – rather than just His blessings or material things. “Lord, send a revival and let it begin in me!”

Faith, Works, and Simple Truth

The word faith, as found in the New Testament, is used in at least three different ways. It is used to describe that body of information the Christian is to defend, or contend for (Jude 3), it is used of a person’s personal moral conviction regarding a subject (Romans 14:22), and then it is used to describe that “moral conviction” that is essential to pleasing God. (Hebrews 11:6) This faith is the result of an honest assessment of the evidence that God has provided. Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Though defined simply as “trusting conviction,” the faith that is pleasing to God is more comprehensive. For instance,

Paul tells us that if faith is not infused with love, then the man with that incomplete faith is “nothing” 1 Corinthians 13:2, “…and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.” Similarly, James (2:21, 24) tells us that in Abraham we can see that faith is only completed by carrying out the works God requires of us and that we are “justified by works and not faith alone”.

Some argue that though faith is essential, it does not involve obedience or godly work, but this is physically impossible.

“Trusting conviction” requires physically assessing the evidence of God’s word through hearing, seeing, and the process of reason. These all involve thought processes, which are the physical work of the brain.

Reminders That God Is The Creator 1/28/25

Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

What a wonderful book the Bible is! It is written for all of humanity to understand and appreciate what God our creator has done for us. Paul pens these words, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works”(2 Timothy 3:1617). While some refuse to believe in God or a ‘higher’ being, others simply discount the ‘Word’ of God and give him no credit in creation, and still others have a weak faith and constantly doubt what the Bible says about creation. Throughout the Scriptures, we find a constant and consistent reminder of Jehovah’s creative power. The Word of God opens with: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). The first chapter of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, also informs us that “God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day”(Genesis 1:31), thus finishing the six days of creation. The Lord is great. Approximately 600 years before the birth of Christ, Isaiah wrote, “Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding” (Isaiah 40:28). Moses, who spoke to God as with a friend (Ex. 33:11), delivered the ‘Ten Commandments’ to the Israelites. And within the commands of God was the reminder of Him as the Creator, “For in six days

the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it” (Exodus 20:11). David, king of Israel, a man after God’s own heart, considered Jehovah as the very strength and shield that was needed to deal with life. He would sing and remind Israel of the God of creation, “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth” (Psalm 33:6).

The prophets of the Old Testament had great understanding of the Lord’s power to accomplish whatever he desired to do. Isaiah writes the words that God spoke to Him, “I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded” (Isaiah 45:12). The prophet would also pen God’s revelation of the origin of humanity by saying, “Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein” (Isaiah 42:5).

After the Israelites returned to Jerusalem from captivity, the people needed to be reminded of the God that they served. Nehemiah, in the days of rebuilding Jerusalem, wrote, “Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee” (Nehemiah 9:6). In prayers of the early church, acknowledgement of creation was given. Chris-

Faith is a physical work.

Does the fact that faith is a physical process contradict Paul’s statements regarding “works” in Romans 4 and Ephesians 2:8-9? Not at all, for godly works of obedience that are essential to salvation, such as love, do not allow us to “boast” before God (Romans 2:2, Ephesians 2:9), nor do they “indebt” God to us (Romans 2:4). In fact, if we obeyed perfectly we still would have no place to boast for we would still be “unworthy servants” and would have “only done what was our duty.” Luke 17:10. If we examine the context of Paul’s statements carefully, we find that the “works” he speaks against are those of man’s creation, and not the works commanded by God that make our “faith complete”. (James 2:21)

tians during the first century obviously understood that the Lord created the heaven and earth as Moses recorded in the beginning of Genesis. In prayers of the early church, disciples acknowledged the Lord as creator; “And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is”(Acts 4:24).

As the saints of the New Testament were persecuted for following Jesus, they were told, in the book of Hebrews, of the better covenant in Christ. This covenant was the desire of God for all people of all nations. All could understand the everlasting God as the true Creator. From what is written in the Old and New Testaments we find that “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear”(Hebrews 11:3).

The vast universe and the bounty of God’s creation show a design, a designer, and declare GOD! David wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork”(Psalm 19:1). The proof of God as Creator is all around us. Paul told those of Lycaonia that God “left not himself without witness, in that He did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness”(Acts 14:17).

God “hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue” (2 Peter 1:3). What a Great God we serve; the Creator of heaven and earth.

Carroll Quentin Spiller, 84, of Bonham passed away Saturday, September 20, 2025. Services were held at Wise Funeral Home on Thursday, September 25, at 12:00 pm.

C.Q. was the second of seven children, born on February 10, 1941 to Joseph Quentin and Velva Pauline Spiller in Dodd City, Texas. He attended Dodd City schools, graduating in 1959. He volunteered for the US Army and became a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. When he returned from the Army, he met Linda Kay Priddy. They married on June 4, 1966 at Clark Memorial Methodist Church. Their union lasted 59 years, 3 months, and 16 days.

C.Q. worked on the Union Pacific Railroad for 29 years. He became a knife maker and a master engraver, and enjoyed working on his ‘57 Corvette. He loved maintaining his place north of Bonham, which gave wonderful memories to three generations of Spiller children.

He joined Trinity Baptist Church to give his children a firm grounding in the Christian faith. After the children were grown, he and Linda attended First United Methodist Church. As the decades passed, C.Q.’s devotion to Christ grew deeper. In his latter years, he took solace in the fact that his entire family knew and loved the Lord.

Gary was extremely close to his older brother, Rayburn Hale. They were inseparable growing up with only 15 months difference in their age. Their relationship continued to be strong throughout their adult years. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed cooking, riding motorcycles, swimming, sailing, hunting, and fishing with his siblings. Gary was a joy to be around and always an amazing host.

Gary had a career that spanned almost 40 years as a registered nurse working in hospitals and VA medical facilities. His areas of expertise included the emergency room and the cardiac catheterization lab.

Gary was survived by his wife, Mary Lou Hale (deceased now), sons: Hayden Hale and Jimmy Allen (deceased now), daughters: Nora Davenport (Mike) and Patty, grandsons: Josh, Jimmy Allen and Matt Allen, granddaughters: Cyndi, Shana, Miranda, Stephanie, Tasha, Tiffany, and Cassidy, brother: Rayburn Arvus Hale, Jr. (deceased now), three sisters: Dianna Ridge (Thomas), Kim Wisener (Doug) and Kathy Vaughn (Steve) and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rayburn Hale, Sr. and Lela.

A private service celebrating Gary’s life will be held by his family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to plant a tree in his memory.

Both Gary and his father are honored for their service in the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial Museum in Paris, TX. His life was marked by love - the joy of his children, grandchildren, siblings and extended family. We rejoice knowing he is experiencing peace and joy. “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds through Christ Jesus”. Philippians 4:7

God’s Garden God looked around His garden And found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

Fishin’ Report

TAKE A KID FISHING or Hunting!

Week of September 24, 2025

Bois d’Arc EXCELLENT. Early morning bass bite is fair around pond weed with buzz baits and frogs. Then target the edge of the pond weed using flukes, soft plastic stick baits or Texas rigged creature baits. Squarebill crankbaits are good on pond dams and high spots throughout the lake. Best bite is Texas rigs in the timber with creature baits or beavers in 5-10 feet. Carolina rigs fair on offshore structures 16-23 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Mitchell’s Guide Service. Crappie are excellent. Fish are starting to transition to deeper water to a fall pattern, but can still be shallow. Use hand tied jigs or minnows in 8-30 feet of water concentrating efforts in 15-25 feet of water. Report by River Bottom Boys Guide Service. Cooper GOOD. Water stained; 78 degrees; 2.02 feet below pool. Crappie are slow in 15-30 feet of water on or near the bottom. Lavon GOOD. Water normal stain; 86 degrees; 2.03 feet below pool. The pattern is holding steady, but changes are around the corner as the weather cools. Crappie are fair to good with limits possible, when the water temperature cools the bite will improve as fish start feeding up. Target crappie in 10-18 feet of water with structure in 15-18 feet being the sweet spot. Any colored jigs is good as long as it is in their face. Bass are good in 5-20 feet of water on rock or concrete structures, such as boat, ramps, riprap, and bridges. Ray Roberts FAIR. Water slightly stained; 82 degrees; 0.93 feet below pool. The transition to fall patterns is just around the corner. Crappie are fair on timber in 12-18 feet of water with minnows or natural colored or silver and chartreuse jigs. Largemouth bass are good offshore, and secondary points at the mouths of creeks with jigs or shad imitation baits. Large worms are not as productive. Start using topwater frogs on mats and vegetation. Report by Daniel Koberna, Lt. Dan’s Crappie Co. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 80 degrees; 0.77 feet below pool. Lake Tawakoni is fishing good as we finish up our summer pattern. Hybrid stripers and white bass are good with limits possible. Fish are feeding midday. The best depth has been 10-14 feet of water with lures. Eating sized catfish are red hot on prepared baits. This bite will continue until late November. The trophy catfish bite is kicking off. Starting to see fish in the 20-30 pound range being caught on fresh cut shad in 18-30 feet. Crappie have been slow. Largemouth bass are picking up and we are seeing fish feeding at daylight and dusk. Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 84 degrees; 0.21 feet above pool. Striped bass fishing is picking up with the cooler weather. Fish are schooling on the right day across deep flats eating small shad. Catching fish on swimbaits and small topwaters. Bigger fish are on structure in 25-45 feet of water. Expect the bite on live bait to pick up over the next week. Catfishing is good on baited holes in the backs of creeks and ditches in 20-30 feet of water on punch bait. Bigger blue catfish will start to feed on deep flats 40-60 feet of water drifting cut shad and whole gizzard shad. Locate bass on docks and structure as the water cools off and fish start to feed more frequently. Reaction baits and plastics off the banks in 8-15 feet of water. Smallmouth bass are staging off the banks on points with structure in 15-25 feet of water.

Ector Friendship Club

Press Release - The monthly meeting of the Ector Friendship Club was held Tuesday, 9/ 24 at the Ector office. We were glad to have one visitor, Tammy Baca, & Six Members; Our new President, Marlene Ybarra, Kathleen, Nelda, Velma, Raynell, and Glenna were present. Kathleen did the devotional. We had a very good Pot Luck lunch and time of visiting. No old business but some new business. Kathleen and Marlene brought up ways to help in getting more of the can goods, beans, rice that are in the Blessing Box to be taken and used. Kathleen suggested buying small inexpensive crockpots to put in the blessing box along with recipes and seasoning packets for use with these items mentioned. Hopefully this will encourage people to take these items and have everything for a meal. Checking at garage sale, yard sales for the small crockpots. Not spending over 5$. Kathleen is writing up recipes and filling spice bags to attach to the crockpot's. She has had some success so we will do a trial period on this. If this goes over we can discuss helping with recipes and filling of the spice bags to go with the Crockpots. We will discuss Thanksgiving and our lunch next meeting in Ector office on regular 4th Tuesday of October. The date of our Christmas meeting to be announced at Kathleen's in early December. Hope to see all our members in October.

Press Release 08/25/25

Rodney Schleichardt, 38, of Bonham, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for Sexual Assault Child. The sentence was part of a plea agreement reached by the District Attorney where Schleichardt pled to the maximum sentence on two separate charges. In addition to incarceration the plea agreement included a lifetime protective order for the child victim and lifetime sex offender registration for the defendant.

Charges stem from a May 2023 incident where Bonham Police were called to the high school after a student reported that a relative sexually assaulted her. During their investigation a fourteen (14) year old child stated earlier that morning that the defendant had sexually assaulted her and offered to pay her money to not tell anyone. The child also reported this was not the first time that this had happened. After learning the location of the assault, Bonham Police took over the investigation and had the child victim taken to the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) for a forensic interview. The child related that on more than one occasion Schleichardt had sexually assaulted her and that the previous time was approximately a month earlier. The child also provided additional details

NOTICE OF RECEIPT OF APPLICATION AND INTENT TO OBTAIN WATER QUALITY PERMIT RENEWAL

PERMIT NO. WQ0010666001

APPLICATION. Town of Windom, P.O. Box 1027, Windom, Texas 75492, has applied to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to renew Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) Permit No. WQ0010666001 (EPA I.D. No. TX0072711) to authorize the discharge of treated wastewater at a volume not to exceed a daily average flow of 32,000 gallons per day. The domestic wastewater treatment facility is located approximately 0.25 mile southwest of the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 1743 and State Highway 56, in the city of Windom, in Fannin County, Texas 75492. The discharge route is from the plant site to an unnamed tributary; thence to Burnett Creek; thence to Bullard Creek; thence to Bois d’Arc Creek; thence to Red River Below Lake Texoma. TCEQ received this application on September 5, 2025. The permit application will be available for viewing and copying at Windom City Hall, Foyer, 406 Main Street, Windom, in Fannin County, Texas prior to the date this notice is published in the newspaper. The application, including any updates, and associated notices are available electronically at the following webpage: https://www.tceq.texas.gov/permitting/wastewater/pending-permits/tpdes-applications. This link to an electronic map of the site or facility’s general location is provided as a public courtesy and not part of the application or notice. For the exact location, refer to the application.

https://gisweb.tceq.texas.gov/LocationMapper/?marker=-96.006388,33.5625&level=18

ADDITIONAL NOTICE. TCEQ’s Executive Director has determined the application is administratively complete and will conduct a technical review of the application. After technical review of the application is complete, the Executive Director may prepare a draft permit and will issue a preliminary decision on the application. Notice of the Application and Preliminary Decision will be published and mailed to those who are on the county-wide mailing list and to those who are on the mailing list for this application. That notice will contain the deadline for submitting public comments.

PUBLIC COMMENT / PUBLIC MEETING. You may submit public comments or request a public meeting on this application. The purpose of a public meeting is to provide the opportunity to submit comments or to ask questions about the application. TCEQ will hold a public meeting if the Executive Director determines that there is a significant degree of public interest in the application or if requested by a local legislator. A public meeting is not a contested case hearing.

OPPORTUNITY FOR A CONTESTED CASE HEARING. After the deadline for submitting public comments, the Executive Director will consider all timely comments and prepare a response to all relevant and material, or significant public comments. Unless the application is directly referred for a contested case hearing, the response to comments, and the Executive Director’s decision on the application, will be mailed to everyone who submitted public comments and to those persons who are on the mailing list for this application. If comments are received, the mailing will also provide instructions for requesting reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision and for requesting a contested case hearing. A contested case hearing is a legal proceeding similar to a civil trial in state district court.

TO REQUEST A CONTESTED CASE HEARING, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR REQUEST: your name, address, phone number; applicant’s name and proposed permit number; the location and distance of your property/activities relative to the proposed facility; a specific description of how you would be adversely affected by the facility in a way not common to the general public; a list of all disputed issues of fact that you submit during the comment period and, the statement “[I/we] request a contested case hearing.” If the request for contested case hearing is filed on behalf of a group or association, the request must designate the group’s representative for receiving future correspondence; identify by name and physical address an individual member of the group who would be adversely affected by the proposed facility or activity; provide the information discussed above regarding the affected member’s location and distance from the facility or activity; explain how and why the member would be affected; and explain how the interests the group seeks to protect are relevant to the group’s purpose.

Following the close of all applicable comment and request periods, the Executive Director will forward the application and any requests for reconsideration or for a contested case hearing to the TCEQ Commissioners for their consideration at a scheduled Commission meeting.

The Commission may only grant a request for a contested case hearing on issues the requestor submitted in their timely comments that were not subsequently withdrawn. If a hearing is granted, the subject of a hearing will be limited to disputed issues of fact or mixed questions of fact and law relating to relevant and material water quality concerns submitted during the comment period.

TCEQ may act on an application to renew a permit for discharge of wastewater without providing an opportunity for a contested case hearing if certain criteria are met.

MAILING LIST. If you submit public comments, a request for a contested case hearing or a reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision, you will be added to the mailing list for this specific application to receive future public notices mailed by the Office of the Chief Clerk. In addition, you may request to be placed on: (1) the permanent mailing list for a specific applicant name and permit number; and/ or (2) the mailing list for a specific county. If you wish to be placed on the permanent and/or the county mailing list, clearly specify which list(s) and send your request to TCEQ Office of the Chief Clerk at the address below.

INFORMATION AVAILABLE ONLINE. For details about the status of the application, visit the Commissioners’ Integrated Database at www.tceq.texas.gov/goto/cid. Search the database using the permit number for this application, which is provided at the top of this notice.

AGENCY CONTACTS AND INFORMATION. All public comments and requests must be submitted either electronically at https://www14.tceq.texas.gov/epic/eComment/, or in writing to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Office of the Chief Clerk, MC-105, P.O. Box 13087, Austin, Texas 78711-3087. Please be aware that any contact information you provide, including your name, phone number, email address and physical address will become part of the agency’s public record. that lead police to search the home and find corroborating physical evidence. The victim in this case showed great courage in disclosing the assault and working with law enforcement during their investigation. “The fact that this victim came forward and disclosed these horrible acts, when they were done by someone who was supposed to protect her, shows her strength”, said Assistant District Attorney Vanessa Vice. “Offenders who prey on children, especially children who trust them and are supposed to be protected by them, should be dealt with harshly”, said District Attorney John Skotnik. The Bonham Police Department and Fannin County Children’s Advocacy Center did an amazing job with this investigation and securing evidence sufficient to secure a strong sentence in this case.

TABC Adopts Emergency Rules Prohibiting Sale Of Consumable Hemp Products To Minors And Requiring Age Verification

AUSTIN — The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) adopted two emergency rules today that prohibit TABC-licensed businesses from selling consumable hemp products to customers under 21 and require them to check a customer’s ID before completing the sale. Both rules became effective immediately after they were adopted at TABC’s Sept. 23 commission meeting and submitted by the agency to the Texas Register earlier today. Enforcement of the new rules will begin Oct. 1. The emergency rules are part of TABC’s implementation of Executive Order GA-56, which requires the agency — along with the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) — to enforce a prohibition on selling consumable hemp products to minors, among other requirements. The order was issued by Gov. Greg Abbott on Sept. 10.

“TABC has a statutory responsibility to ensure its license holders do not impede the general welfare, health, and safety of Texas communities,” TABC Executive Director Thomas Graham said. “The commission’s actions today are a reasonable measure within its authority to help protect children across this state. As TABC works to enforce these new rules, we’ll be providing the alcoholic beverage industry with education and resources to help them comply and conduct responsible sales of consumable hemp products.”

TABC Administrative Rule 51.1 prohibits TABC license and permit holders from selling, offering to sell, serving, or delivering consumable hemp products to a person under 21, while Administrative Rule 51.2 requires these businesses to check a customer’s ID to verify their age before selling them a consumable hemp product. Businesses found in violation of the rules will have their TABC license or permit canceled. Both emergency rules will be effective for 120 days with an optional 60-day extension if necessary. The rules will undergo the standard rulemaking process this fall, with the rules expected to be proposed at the Commission’s November meeting and then formally adopted in January 2026. More information about TABC’s regulation of consumable hemp products and other actions to comply with the directives in Executive Order GA-56 can be found on the agency’s new Consumable Hemp Products page. For information on licensing and registration, labeling, and other regulations for manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of consumable hemp, visit the DSHS Consumable Hemp Program page. To learn more about growing, harvesting, handling, and transporting industrial hemp, visit the Texas Department of Agriculture's Industrial Hemp Program page.

1ST AID FOR WOUNDS

Determining Severity

When your horse is cut, control any bleeding then determine if the wound requires being seen by a Vet. Cuts through the skin showing the muscle, gaping wounds, skin flaps hanging usually need suturing depending on the age and location of the wound. If the wound is near a joint or tendon, a puncture wound, or the horse is very lame, it needs to be seen by the vet. Sending the vet a photo of the wound is helpful for the location but does not show how deep the wound is. That is done by sticking a Q-Tip or gloved finger in the wound when the photo is taken. A Q-Tip, pencil, finger, or hand next to the wound will help determine the actual size of the wound. When in doubt, take the horse to the vet. Care of the Wound

1 To stop the bleeding, use paper towels, pampers, or sheet cotton wrapped tight with vet wrap. If the wound can’t be wrapped, grab the cleanest cloth or paper towels and press firmly against the wound. Do not use anticoagulants or try to make a tourniquet. After 15 minutes of pressure, peek under and remove carefully. If the cloth is soaked with fresh blood, do not remove it. Place another on top of it and continue pressure. The horse can lose a lot of blood without severe risk. Bleeding is life-threatening if they lose 2 gallons (it would take 2 gallons to paint to cover the walls of 12x12 stall).

2 Clean the wound. Start by removing hay and debris manually. Then flush the wound with the hose using the amount of pressure that you wash your hands with. With more pressure get deep in the cervices of the wound to remove the dirt. Follow with scrubbing the wound with gauze squares or paper towels so you can see if there is still dirt on the towel. Repeat with fresh paper towels until clean.

3 Bandage the wound. Wounds heal faster under a bandage because the protected, moist environment allows the blood vessels and fibrin to grow across the cut

tissue closing the wound. The bandage consists of a nonstick telfa pad or ½ paper towel with antibiotic ointment held in place by rolled gauze. Add a layer of sheet cotton then secure the bandage with elastic roll of vet wrap. Change the bandage daily. Choose the right antibiotic ointment for each healing stage. For fresh wounds, use Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment. For a natural approach, honey or concentrated salt solution can be used. Avoid drying products like blue sprays or powders in fresh wounds because the hamper the healing process. They can be used later when the wound has filled in to dry it. If the wound is high on the leg or on the body where you cannot bandage, use an oil-based spray such as Cut N Heal or Scarlet oil which promotes healing and repels flies.

Puncture wounds always need to be flushed with a syringe of betadine, peroxide, or 20% salt solution multiple times until it heals from the inside out.

Antibiotics are always indicated with deep wounds through the skin or puncture wounds to prevent infection.

A Tetanus shot or booster is needed if it has been more than 6 months since the last vaccination. Signs of infection are heat and swelling of the wound area, bad odor, a lot of pus discharge, and soreness or lameness of the leg. To get the infection under control, more aggressive treatment will be needed by the vet.

SCREW WORM

The screw worm problem has reappeared in Mexico. It is caused by the screw worm fly that lay their eggs in a wound or the umbilicus of a new calf and then the larvae burrow deep into the wound causing infection. We have prevented the Screw worm in USA by releasing sterile screw worm flies at the border since the late 70s. Now we are releasing more sterile flies that can’t lay eggs and prohibiting the import of cattle from Mexico. WE do not have the screw worm problem here. The USDA is publishing information to make thepublic aware and educated about screw worms.

Leonard's Lady Tigers have continued their strong start to the 2025 varsity volleyball season into District 11-3A play.

Leonard reached the beginning of Fall on Sept. 22 with a 27-2 overall record and three consecutive district wins to begin 11-3A play.

Only a few more wins will equate the most in school history in a single season in the sport. The previous most came in 2014, when the Lady Tigers had 29 victories and contended for a postseason berth into the final match of district play -- before making bi-district advances the ensuing five seasons under then head coach Lisa Davis.

The current successful campaign coincides with Leonard's second straight season under Lindsay Carter Giles -- the longest serving head coach of the sport at the school since Davis' nine consecutive seasons.
