Proposed fee aimed at renter safety draws crowd to Monday night meeting BONHAM, Texas (KXII) The Bonham City Council has voted to table a proposed rental inspection fee after about a dozen landlords spoke out against the measure at Monday night’s meeting. The fee, if adopted, would require all rental properties within city limits to be inspected for compliance with the Texas Property Code before a tenant moves in. What the inspection would cover City officials outlined what inspectors would look for under the proposal. “We’re looking for functioning locks on each exterior door, door viewers, ensuring that the
apartment has smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, making sure it has utilities and that there is hot water,” officials said. Landlords push back Opponents argued the fee would ultimately be passed on to renters, adding to the cost of housing. One landlord urged the city to take a more targeted approach. “Rather than creating a new registry program that applies to every rental property, the city should focus its resources on identifying and addressing the properties that are actually generating complaints,” one landlord said. Another said the blanket fee felt unfair to property owners who already maintain their rentals. “To me it was kind of like a slap in the face to those of us who do take care of our proper-
ties. We already maintain everything well, we pay our taxes, we do our insurance — and to add another fee right now, I mean, we’re trying to keep everything as affordable as we can,” the landlord said. Jason Egan, a concerned landlord, echoed that sentiment. “I’m just asking the city to distinguish between bad landlords and responsible landlords before imposing a fee on everyone else,” Egan said. What’s next The council voted to table the discussion. Before the proposal comes back for a vote, the council said it will hold a workshop to address the concerns raised at Monday’s meeting, and they thanked everyone for coming out.
