At Bonham State Park Bonham Welcomes New Police Chief 100 Year Celebration! Saturday April 15, 2023
Press Release - The city of Bonham is pleased to announce the hiring of Andrew Hawkes as the new Chief of Police. Chief Hawkes is currently the Chief of Police for the city of Sunnyvale Texas. Prior to Sunnyvale, Chief Hawkes was the Chief of Police for the city of Jacksonville Texas (Population 13,000). Sunnyvale is a rapidly growing community that borders the cities of Mesquite, Garland, and Forney. Chief Hawkes was tasked with starting the first Police Department for the city of Sunnyvale, the city had previously contracted with the Dallas County Sheriff’s office for law enforcement. Prior to beginning his career as a Chief of Police, Hawkes spent 15 years at the Collin County Sheriff’s Department working his way up to Lieutenant.
Chief Hawkes holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Dallas Baptist University and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Administration from the University of Texas at Dallas. Chief Hawkes holds both a Master Peace Officer License as well as a Certified Public Manager Certification. The City of Bonham received over 25 resumes during the search process. Working with a consultant, the city organized a search and screening committee comprised of both members of the community and professionals from the region. The screening committee conducted interviews of 10 applicants and narrowed the list to 4 candidates recommended for city administration to interview. “We had four very qualified candidates that both myself
and my administrative team interviewed. We invited the top 2 selections back for follow up interviews.” Stated City Manager Sean Pate "Appointing a leader for our Police Department is among the most important decisions we make as a city, and we know that Chief Hawkes is the right person for this particular job,” said City Manager Sean Pate. “He understands our current community needs and he understands the challenges that a growing community experiences as it relates to law enforcement. Chief Hawkes is a proponent of both community involvement and community policing, and he strives for best practices recognition as defined by the Texas Police Chiefs Association. We are confident he will build upon the foundation that Chief Bankston so loyally dedicated his career to.”

Bonham State Park will be celebrating 100 Years of State Parks in Texas from 10 am to 2 pm Saturday April 15th. Day-Use Entrance Permits are free all day, April 15th. Guarantee your entry by reserving free day pass online. Focusing on the theme “Life is Better Outside,” the park is hosting a wide variety of natural and cultural table talks. Outdoor skills being taught include camping skills, orienteering, boating safety, fishing skills, and outdoor cooking. Birding, fossils, arrowheads, and outdoor critters are among the nature table talks. Cultural activities include a look into the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a Cowboy Chuckwagon, and Amateur Ham “Radio in the Park”. In addition, visitors may enjoy fishing (fishing license not
required), swimming, boating (reminder that it is a “No Wake” lake), picnicking, hiking, and mountain biking. Texas proudly boasts of 89 state parks, historical areas and natural areas including Bonham State Park which is one of 29 remaining Texas State Parks built by the CCC. As part of the yearlong, statewide “100 Year Celebration!”, multiple events are scheduled at Bonham State Park including our own “100 Year Celebrations!” on April 15th and September 30th. Each Texas State Park will have its own unique schedule of events. Check online for other unique opportunities including a photo contest! In addition, Texas Parks and Wildlife is also offering “100 Year Celebration!” collectibles such as lapel pins, hiking stick medallions, patches, stickers, scratch-off poster, and Texas State Park Passport. of the 89 state parks has a stamp that can be added into the passport or other camping journal. Other collectibles may also be available at the parks. Other upcoming events at Bonham State Pare are Angler Education Events on June 3rd and October 7th, Boo in the Park! October 27th, Light up the Park December 15th-16th, and weekend interpretive events from March through November. These events require a paid day-use entrance fee of $4.00 for visitors 13 years old and up. Children, 12 years old and younger, are free. Remember that dayuse passes and camping are limited at Texas State Parks. Book your reservations online up to 5 months ahead for camping and 30 days ahead for day-use only.
