Savoy Townhall Fails To Calm Citizen Concerns About B.E.S.S. Facility

Story and photos by Connie Estes

Tuesday, March 4, 2025 – A townhall meeting was held at the Savoy High School at 6:30 pm to address residents’ concerns about a Battery Energy Storage System (B.E.S.S.) being built close

to Savoy. This was the first meeting held for residents with the facility nearing completion. Some County officials were in attendance including volunteer firefighters, Savoy Chief of Police, Savoy Mayor, Commissioner Precinct 1 Troy Waggoner, County

Judge Newt Cunningham, the Fannin County Emergency Management team led by Troy Hudson and others who may not have been introduced. Troy Hudson spoke to the large crowd of residents to ensure that he will work with Engie, local fire departments

and officials for all emergencies but his knowledge of the facililty’s existence is very recent. Judge Newt Cunningham also spoke to inform everyone how the approval for the battery storage facility was handled by a former judge and commissioners court. It is his understanding that during low supply needs the storage will take place and during peak supply needs the stored electricity will be sold and that is where their money is made. Although the storage system is not online yet, it will be activated sometime this year. The biggest concern of the residents who spoke was safety. Local volunteer fire departments and even paid fire departments are not trained or equipped to respond to a fire at one of these storage facilities. The spokesmen from Engie North America spoke to the concerns about the possibility of fires and gasses being released into the surrounding environment. Continued
