City History

WHERE HISTORY MEETS HEART

DENTON’S STORIED PAST COMES TO LIFE THROUGH THE ARCHITECTURE, MUSEUMS, AND UNIQUE SIGHTS SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE CITY. IT’S TIME TO EXPLORE.

DENTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE

The Denton County Courthouse and the museum housed inside are an iconic and anchoring piece of Denton history. Built in 1896, the courthouse embodies Texas with its Austin pink granite, Denton limestone, and sandstone from the Pecos region. It was fully restored in 2004 using original blueprints of architect W.C. Dodson. Today, the museum houses exhibits that showcase Denton history, Western heritage, and more, and hosts lectures and community organized events.

QUAKERTOWN PARK

irty-two acres of cozy and comfortable green space are waiting for you in the heart of the city. Quakertown Park is a welcoming place to picnic, relax, or catch one of the city’s revered festivals, including the soulful Denton Blues Festival. All year long, this park is a lively reminder of Denton’s powerful community energy.

DENTON COUNTY AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM

This award-winning home-turnedmuseum is steeped with the stories of families that made Quakertown a vibrant community in the late 19th and early 20th century. Inside, explore exhibits that honor their legacy and see the papers and medical supplies of Dr. Edwin D. Moten, Denton’s first African American doctor.

BAYLESS-SELBY HOUSE MUSEUM

Step back in time at the BaylessSelby House Museum, where the story of Denton at the turnof-the-century comes to life in this Victorian-style house museum. Located at Denton County Historical Park, the house transports you back in time while you take in the styles of the era from an Eastlake-style adult bedroom suite to a music room with the E. Gabler & Bro. grand piano. Then, peruse the garden grounds and find yourself in a time long-gone. Museum admission is free and within walking distance of downtown, the Quakertown House Museum, and the Welcome Center.

OLD ALTON BRIDGE

This iron-truss bridge is perfect for peaceful walks amid quaint and quiet woods—during the daytime, at least. It’s also known as “Goatman’s Bridge,” and the mysterious, terrifying Goatman is said to stalk these parts after the sun goes down. If you love local folklore (and have strong nerves), a nighttime visit to the Old Alton Bridge is just the ticket.
